General InformationA NOTE FROM THE DIRECTOR: Greetings! We need to share about two great things that have happened!The Hoops Scoop.Thank you to all the players, parents and volunteer coaches who gave their best to the Ashford Basketball teams this winter. We sponsored 9 basketball teams in 4 leagues and an instructional program that totaled almost 100 kids passing, shooting, defending, fast breaking, faking, driving and improving over the 4-month season. I hope the experience built their confidence, taught them some life long lessons, and instilled a love for the game.The most outstanding highlight of the season came in the Tournament Championship game for the 7th and 8th grade girls hosted here in Ashford. Coach Andy Fesenmeyer and assistant Keith Lyons and the Jr. High Girls Rec. team faced a tall and tenacious Windham team. At the half, the scoreboard showed a 10-point deficit for Ashford. Our team came back on fire in the second half with an effective full court press, and a 40-point scoring frenzy led by Ali Kuzara. Final score was Ashford 59, Windham 46. The victory was especially sweet for coach Andy Fesenmeyer who dedicated the past 6 winters to coaching this group of girls. Andy will retire from coaching Rec. Basketball after this season since his youngest daughter will be moving on to High School. Thank you Andy for your leadership, devotion, inspiration and commitment and congratulations on your team’s outstanding final performance. The victory was especially sweet and historic for me as the Rec. Director, because we have been hosting a tournament here in Ashford for the past 10 seasons and it was the first time I had the distinct pleasure of handing out first place trophy’s to Ashford kids! Hurray and Three Cheers!

Kris Cote’s Eagle Scout ProjectAshford residents and the Park and Rec. Department were the fortunate beneficiaries of Kris Cote’s Eagle Scout project. He spearheaded a bridge building project to cross a wetlands area on the purple dot trail at Ashford Memorial Park. Kris planned, organized, designed, and recruited donations of materials. Boy Scout leaders, and Kris, led the work crew known as

Troop #92 in constructing and installing the two bridges. The bridges are stable, secure, and functional and have expanded the perimeter trail at the park and access to the Mount Hope River. We plan to add some signs and a bench and picnic table on the trail this summer and we hope that many residents will check it out and enjoy this nature trail. Thank you very much and congratulations to Kris whose project and presentation were accepted by the Council. The Eagle Scout Ceremony to recognize his achievements will be held on June 18th. Kris is a senior at Windham Tech who will also be graduating in June and plans to pursue further education at New England Technical College and is interested in the National Guard. Please check out all the programs, trips, activities, concerts and camps that the Recreation Department, Babcock Library, Senior Center and Social Service Department have to offer. July 19th TIME MACHINE This band is a classic rock cover band performing Rock and Roll music from the 1960’s through the 2000’s, playing everything from the Beatles to Bono. Time Machine focuses on well known high-energy rock standards mostly writ-ten and or performed by inductees to the Rock n Roll Hall of Fame. The band is comprised of four life long musicians who will treat you to some of your favorite tunes from Bob Dylan, Jimi Hendrix, Rod Stewart, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Bruce Springsteen, Marshall Tucker, Allman Brothers, U2, Green Day, and more.APRC welcomes Time Machine to our concert series for the first time!

July 26th STONE CANYONThis band has been rated one of New England’s Best Country Bands and is returning to the Ashford stage. These experienced entertainers will mix popular old favorites with the current country hits of today. Whale Watch OR Deep Sea Fishing Location: Plymouth, MA Date: Sunday, July 31 (registration deadline is July 10)Time: The bus will leave W lot at 10 a.m. and return approx.

9 p.m. We will be taking Captain John Boats out of Plymouth MA. Partici-pants will have a choice of going on a Whale Watch or Going Deep Sea Fishing. Both boats will leave from the dock at 2 p.m. We will arrive in Plymouth at about noon, so there will be time to explore on your own. The boats will dock at about 6 p.m. and there will be time to grab a quick dinner before the bus departs at 7 p.m. Additional information about and maps of Plymouth will be available to all par-ticipants.

Whale WatchWatch Humpback Whales breaching, Minke and other species of whales play-ing, swimming and feeding in their natu-ral environment in the Atlantic Ocean. This 4-hour boat tour along Camp Cod Bay offers spectacular scenery, so bring the kids, cameras, and have fun. Deep Sea FishingPlymouth is the perfect take-off point for fishing the waters of Cape Cod Bay well known for its excellent deep-sea fishing. During the fishing season, you will catch Codfish, Pollock, Haddock, Mackerel, Flounder, and even occasional Striped Bass and Bluefish. Families are welcome! Never cleaned a fish before? ASHFORD DAY!AT JUNE NORCROSS WEBSTER SCOUT CAMP

SATURDAY JULY 9th 9:00 –5:00 pm

The Boy Scout Camp on Rte #44 graciously opens their grounds and facilities to Town residents on Saturday, July 9th from 9:00 am-5:00 pm. The camp will give tram tours of the grounds and opportunities for people to swim, canoe, fish, hike, and check out the archery range and climb-ing wall. (Participants in the water sports will need to take a brief test to show they are qualified swimmers.) They even have a huge inflatable slide in the lake, which will be avail-able that day. This event is FREE! Coffee and bug juice will be provided. Bring your own picnic lunch! The trading post will be open for snacks. Families and friends of the scout camp are invited to come spend the day, if you are a strang-er to the camp, don’t be, meet your neighbor and explore this great facility that’s right in your back yard! We hope this will become an annual event! Rain Date July 16th.

ART IN THE AFTERNOON! (Ages 6-10 yrs)Date: August 8th - 12th Time: 1:00 -3:00 p.m.Fee: $40 for the week or $10 a day. (pre-registration required)Graphic Artist Andrea Bean will lead this exploration of five famous artists. Children will hear an interesting and inspir-ing story about the artist’s life or artwork. Then its hands on time and a chance to explore and create a project of their own. Step by step instruction provided by Andrea when needed and a chance to freely create with many different art mediums. Look for the display of project examples in the lower lobby of the library. The air conditioned Old Warrenville Post Office will become an art studio for the week. Escape the heat and get creative!

Monday, Matisse – Project: Today we will create 3D fish mo-biles using heavyweight paper, watercolors and fabric. We will explore how basic table salt and crayons interact with water-colors.

Tuesday, Rembrandt – Project: GYOTAKU. Japanese fishermen found a unique way to document their fish catches. In this class we’ll explore the art of Japanese fish printing. Your artist will come home with a t-shirt painted using Gyotaku methods.

Wednesday, Renoir – Project: Recycled Plastic Bag Collage. Rather than allowing more plastic to end up in a landfill or wreak further havoc on the environment, we will raise students’ level of social conscience and demonstrate the art elements of line, shape and texture with this lesson in “green” art.

Thursday, Van Gogh – Project: Artists will learn to draw a still life of sunflow-ers by breaking them down into basic shapes. They will use oil pastels & water-color and be amazed at how they work together.

Friday, Da Vinci –Project: Printmaking. Today, using acrylics and brayers, stu-dents will create and hand print relief prints and turn them into greeting cards. In addition to taking home their cards, they’ll have their original stamp, which can be used over and over again.

For every case of elder abuse and neglect reported to authorities, experts estimate that there may be as many as 5 cases not reported. On June 13, Nancy Krodel, Deputy Direc-tor of Operations for Senior Resources, will speak at the Ashford Senior Center on the very timely topic of Elder Abuse. If you can’t make either date, call the Center.The Yellow Dot program is FREE and is designed to help save lives. The program consists of a recent photo copied from your driv-er’s license, an information card completed in pencil contain-ing emergency contact information, medications, allergies, preferred physicians and hospital etc., and a Yellow dot sticker to be affixed to the back windshield of the car. In the event of an emergency, first responders can identify the vehicle as that of a Yellow Dot participant and will know to look inside the glove compartment to find pertinent information.
