II t’s my favourite time of year again, and, as I get older, the gap between

Christmases seems to be getting smaller and smaller - not sure why!

Leatherhead town will once again be ablaze with colour and music forthe annual Christmas festivities, there’s lots to see and do and details can befound on pages 12-13. More fun and festivities - this time the Ashtead VillageTraders will be holding their Christmas Shopping evening on Tuesday 4thDecember, this year’s theme will be the ‘Winter Olympics’, more details canbe found on page 10.

The Leatherhead Theatre pantomime for 2012 will be Aladdin, a traditional tale for all thefamily to enjoy, more about the show, timings and ticket prices can be found on the theatrepage (70).

The Leatherhead Lions will again be out and about, or rather Father Christmas, will be outand about, on the annual float - coming to a road near you, the route features on page 28.

When Santa isn’t doing the rounds on his sleigh on behalf of the Leatherhead Lions, he will alsobe appearing at Bocketts Farm, see page 71.

Sharon Felton and the team at Swan Residential based in North St, Leatherhead are running acolouring in competition for under 8’s, but hurry, you’ll have to get your entries in by Friday 15thDecember in order to be in with a chance of winning a prize, page 21.

I thought I should remind you of the Christmas postal dateswhich can be found on page 32 and don’t forget mummies anddaddies, your little ones can receive a letter from Santa, inaid of the NSPCC; order right up until 18th December and thebig man will sort it all out for you, page 20.

Andy Newbold has just informed me that, for the third year ina row, he is the official photographer for the Royal VarietyShow, it’s a dead glamorous event and I’m sure he’ll sharesome of the fabulous images of Kylie, Robbie Williams, RodStewart, One Direction et al, if we ask him nicely that is! It’shard work but when you’re as good as Andy then it’s smallwonder you get asked to edit the images for Hello! magazine.

It is with much sadness that I learnt of Meredith Worsfold’spassing a few weeks ago. Meredith was a very special personand, with his family’s kind consent, I have written a shorttribute to this wonderful man on page 34. Meredith achievedso much in his 90 years that I believe when the time comes forme to go if I achieve only half of what Meredith had achievedin his lifetime I would say that I too had lived.

All that remains is for me to wish you all a Happy and PeacefulChristmas and I hope you enjoy some orall of the exciting festivities for whichour area is renowned.

Have a super time ducks.

ASHTEAD RESIDENTS’ ASSOCIATIONFounded 1945

www.ashteadresidents.org.uk

No doubt you do not need reminding that Christmas is justaround the corner which means that your credit cards areabout to be on meltdown.

Before you rush to the shops in our larger neighbouringtowns, give a thought to our local shopkeepers in Ashteadwho are keen for your business. Last month our articlehighlighted the need to support local businesses followingthe decision by MVDC to approve the application fromTesco to erect a new store on the site of the Esso ServiceStation in The Street. We have all been concerned aboutthe potential competition of Tesco so please make sureyou give our traders a substantial share of your walletduring the forthcoming season of goodwill.

Remember Ashtead is unique compared with other highstreets that have been taken over by well known nationaland international retail names. We are fortunate to stillhave three first class butchers and greengrocers, twobakers, post offices, newsagents, art galleries, chemistsand a fishmonger, along with shops offering DIY,jewellery, sports equipment, electrical goods, carpets andcurtains, specialist wine merchants and much more. Alsowe have several coffee shops around Ashtead, all managedindependently and offering a great choice. And of course,do not forget the wide range of restaurants and pubs inwhich to relax.

To sample what is on offer why not enjoy an evening outin “The Street” on Tuesday 4th December between 4pmand 8pm. The Ashtead Traders have arranged their usualChristmas extravaganza with a theme of the “WinterOlympiad”. Father Christmas will be in his grotto for thechildren along with side shows and all the fun of the fair. Also the Ashtead Rotary will be on hand rattling their tinsfor charity, so to those of you who attend, please givegenerously. In addition Ashtead has received a concession

from MVDC with free car parking after 2pm on Saturdays8th & 15th December.

What about an idea to save money at Christmas? Do youremember not long ago we were all complaining about theincrease in postage and this year a Christmas card willcost you a 50p stamp? Did you know that an alternativeChristmas postal service has been running for severalyears? The Ashtead Scouts and Guides are supporting theirEpsom colleagues with a service for delivering cards topost codes covering, KT17 to KT21 from 1st December untilthe last collection at 3 pm on 15th December. The cost isonly 20p per card. All you have to do is bundle yourenvelopes together along with your payment and takethem to the collection points that are at:-

• Martins, The Street• Tesco Express, Craddocks Parade• Ashtead TV, Woodfield Lane• The Surgery, Gilbert House, Woodfield Lane• Gary’s Greengrocers, Barnett Wood Lane

What could be easier? Remember, at the same time youare supporting a worthy cause that is in much need offinancial support.

And how about having another evening out? Why not takeyour children and grandchildren to see “Puss in Boots”being performed by The Woodfield Entertainers at theAshtead Peace Memorial Hall from 13th to 15th December. For more details contact either Neil 07763 568973 [email protected] .

So as the festive season draws ever closer the AshteadResidents’ Association wishes our members and supportersa very merry Christmas and happy New Year!

AQuick ReminderBack in August I wrote an article about the changes to Life Assurance due to the European Courtdeciding that it is wrong to discriminate between Men andWomen and that they should be treated

equally.

By the time this Magazine drops through your letter box the changes will have almostarrived and after 21stDecember this year we will all be treated the same – three cheersor not? I think not...

As mentioned in August women tend to live longer than men so up to now have paidless for their life assurance – from now on we will all pay the same, does this meanmen will get cheaper life cover? I think we all know that the answer is women willend up paying more.

It does not end there, Car Insurance is nearly always cheaper for women than menespecially in the younger age ranges, have you ever tried to get car cover for a 17year old male? Well from the 21st of December it is going to be as difficult and moreimportantly expensive for the Girls as the Boys.

And finally if you were thinking of retiringmen got better annuityrates as they tend to die earlier than women, so are they going togive women better annuity rates to match the men? the answerto that one is male rates will fall to match female ratesSo if you are female you need to get your skates on toinsure a car or buy your life cover and if you are male andthinking of buying an annuity you have till the 21st

December to act.

So at the end of the day a well intentioned piece oflegislation to bring more equality to the sexeshas left one sex or the other as a loser, not whatthey intended I suspect and who gains out ofall of this? the life assurers, pension providersand car insurers!

So what should you do?If you were thinking of doing something and

have just not got round to it NOW is the time to geton with things, most life companies for example will

allow the old rates to apply if you get your application in now, even if the cover does not go into force until after the 21st

December.

Where do I get the cover from? For an independent view and the choice of the market phone uson 01372 277271 or send us an email –[email protected]

Everybody needs good neighboursFor some time, local residents have voiced concernsabout St John's School re parking, traffic congestion, and planning applications, so we contacted theschool early in the year and invited them to speak tous.

Our guest speaker on Nov 5th was MrMartin Collier, Headmaster of St John's School, accompanied by their Estates Manager, Mr JonathanGedling. Martin spoke with pride and enthusiasmabout the school as it is, and current and futureplans.

The school may have appeared a little aloof in thepast, but not now. Problems such as parking, trafficcongestion, and lack of communication with localshave been, or are being listened to and dealt with, and the school is keen to hear all ideas forimprovements as well as concerns. There is an openhouse policy for neighbours to air any issues.

Martin has been talking to residents and councillorsre problems in Garlands Rd and has taken on boardthe council's advice that a larger parking area thanfirst planned is needed to house all school coachesand cars. Coach engines will be turned off tominimise fumes. Those using Linden Pit Path will bepleased to hear it will be repaved by the school.Public transport is encouraged, and next year theschool is investing in minibus transport.

Over time, local demand for places at St John’s hasincreased, and the school has grown to 600, withnearly all students now coming from within a 15 mileradius. Pupil lists are full for the next two yearsand their reputation is high in all areas; withacademic achievement, pastoral care and extra-curricular opportunity a priority. All the Sixth Formstudents have the opportunity to serve within the

community, assisting weekly with manycharities, and gaining an insight that not all are asfortunate as they, thus helping create strong citizensand a strong future community.

Concerts at the school are widely advertised. Thereare plans for more community involvement andactivities on site.

Many questions followed the presentation and whilstMartin told us they will continue to seek to developand improve the school’s facilities, we were assuredthat around 620 students will be the maximum. Weviewed the current planning applications anddiscussed them further at the close of the meeting.

LRA thanks the School for joining us, and for being aproactive and inspiring role model in the art ofcommunication and courtesy.

Useful Info1. Free parking offered to shoppers by MVDC in allthe short-term car parks from 2pmSaturdays 8th and 15th December 2012.

3. Next LRA open committee meeting Dec 3rdPlease join us for a short meeting followed by lightrefreshments and informal discussions on thoughtsfor the coming year.

Leatherhead Lions’ Christmas Float Route

Each Christmas the Leatherhead Lions Club visitshomes in Mole Valley with its long establishedChristmas float brightly lit with a cheerful FatherChristmas there to wish good tidings for the festiveseason. Here we are again now in our 38th yearof collecting.

This year's main beneficiary will be Surrey AirAmbulance together with donations to other Lions

charities. Last years' fantastic total of over £9000will be a hard one to match this year but given the

generosity of people towards such a good cause I amsure it can be reached. It is important to realise that

because the air ambulance now has a night flyingcapability, ensuring round the clock emergency

cover, operating costs will naturally be higher, so let’s helpas much as we can.

Mike Rushby, Leatherhead Lions

Where to meet Santa - all routes start at 6pm (excepton Saturday 22nd December which starts at 5pm):

If you are unable to meet the float then Father Christmas willbe at Tesco in Leatherhead from 9am to 5pm on Saturday 15thand Thursday 20th December.

Meredith Worsfold - A Personal Tribute

I first met Meredith backin August 2006, after

several people in Ashteadvillage said I shoulddefinitely meet him as hewas the leading authorityon all things Ashtead!Well, I guess they wereright, and Meredith wasnot only absolutelycharming but wasdelighted to write a shortseries of articles based onhis life and experiences,

entitled ‘Meredith’s Memories’.

Meredith wanted only to write for a few months, and I was more than happy, but almost four yearslater he was still writing his memoires for me, hereally did get the ‘writing bug’ and just couldn’tstop! Of course I was delighted, but I nevermade any demands on Meredith, the stories justcame naturally and frequently.

Meredith was born on 7th September 1922 inWoodfield Lane and throughout his life lived ataddresses in The Street, Grove Road and, after ashort stint in Effingham, returned to Ashtead tolive in Rectory Lane.

He left school at 15 and went to work at Mould’sEmporium in Leatherhead High St, after which hejoined the Worsfold family firm of builders.During WW2 he joined the RAF and was stationedaround the UK and then at Cawnpore, India, maintaining Hurricanes and Dakotas.

Meredith was married to Joyce who sadly passedaway in 1991, and they had two children, Robinand Mary, three grandchildren and a greatgrandson - Matthew. In fact I received a callfrom Meredith just before Christmas last yearthanking me for my card and saying how excitingit was that the stamp I used bore the nameMatthew as that was his new great grandson’sname - bless! Family was so important to him.

Meredith enjoyed music and sang in theLeatherhead Methodist Church Choir and theLeatherhead Choral Society; the latter choirtaking part at the renowned Leith Hill Festival, where he sang as a tenor in the St John Passionunder the baton of Dr Ralph Vaughan Williams.

He was very creative and on my numerous visitsto his flat in Rectory Lane he showed me some ofthe wooden jigsaw puzzles which were sointricately and beautifully made by him. He also

loved putting together jigsaw puzzles and inSeptember 2011 he called me to pop over andhave a look at the 9120 piece puzzle of BruegelThe Elder’s Tower of Babel, which took 13months to finish. I have to say when I saw it Iwas really impressed - and I think secretlyMeredith was too - as it was a staggering 7’6” x4’6” in size. I remember in order to get thewhole puzzle in my photo I had to climb on top ofhis step ladders with Meredith and Mary, hisdaughter, hanging on to the ladders in case Iwent flying. I didn’t, but it was a close call!

I was kindly invited to Meredith’s 90th birthdayparty last September, he was surrounded byfamily and friends, although very frail, heseemed happy and contented. Sadly I wasn’t toknow that this was the last time I would see him,as six weeks later he passed away.

Being with Meredith was always a wonderfulexperience, I think what made him such acharming and kind person to be with was that hewas interesting and interested in what others hadto say. He made me want to be a good person.

I attended Meredith’s Thanksgiving Service at theLeatherhead Methodist Church on 2nd Novemberlast, it was packed with so many people wantingto pay their respects and like so many others, Iwas not wearing black because we all knew hewould not want us wearingsolemn colours.

God bless youMeredith, you willalways berememberedfondly, often andwell.

In her new Christmas cardie and slippers, Mary satin the chair nearest to the television, her greycurls framed by the festive green halo of aforgotten paper crown. A bone china cup wasbalanced at a perilous angle on her lap, with aforgotten ginger nut swimming in the saucer ofspilled tea. She looked good for her age as shedozed, surrounded by a sea of happy family chaos. Her face was a page, lined with memories of a lifewell lived.

Christmas during the war had been hard.Rationing, blackouts and separated families meanta meagre and worrying time. Her parents haddone their best and there were carols and homemade streamers with gifts of soap, hankies andhand-me-down clothes. There were brave faces, determined smiles and an extra ration of sugar, but nothing sweetened the worry about hermissing elder brother Charlie.

Christmas in the fifties was a much happier affairand full of exciting possibilities. She’d met herfuture husband and life was about parties, popular music and perky dresses. The Festival ofBritain in 1951 had introduced her to a new wayof living and America had introduced her to ElvisPresley. Christmas was full of colour and familyparties. Television was a revelation and the firstroyal broadcast was in 1957. Christmas specialsbrought Perry Como and Bing Crosby into herliving room and mistletoe brought the opportunityto kiss her fiancé!

The sixties brought mini skirts, men on the moon, the Beatles and The Forsyte Saga. For Mary, itwas mainly motherhood and hard work. She’dgiven up her job to start a family and her dayswere taken up with looking after the house, herhusband, and then her babies. Her new Bendixautomatic washing machine did make life easierthough! Christmas was an opportunity to show offand she proudly displayed her children’shomemade decorations. Father Christmas camedown the chimney, Mary treated herself to somebottles of Babycham and took pictures with herKodak Instamatic camera.

Her children were growing and life was movingeven faster during the seventies. Mary learnedhow to drive and they bought a red Austin 1100.They moved to a modern house and her liferevolved around school, homework and the parttime job she’d taken at the library. Her parentswere getting older and her dad was suffering fromthe side effects of working with asbestos after thewar. Christmas was the highlight of the year andshe loved using all her new kitchen gadgets.Mary’s daughter had a new Sindy doll and wouldspend hours brushing her hair and dressing her inswirly patterned clothes. Her son was obsessed

with Lego, Hotwheels and Evel Knievel. Theywatched Morecambe and Wise and the childrengiggled at their grandparents, dozing in theirpaper crowns.

The eighties and nineties brought both sadnessand pride as her parents passed away and herchildren passed exams. She saw herself gettingolder in the mirror and didn’t like it all. Therewas a wave of optimism when the Berlin Wallcame down but a wave of gloom as the countrywas plunged into recession. Mary feltindescribable pride as she watched her husbandwalk their beautiful daughter down the aisle, towards her future son in law. Christmasremained a constant reminder of the lovebetween them all and the familiar decorationswere hung on the tree. She still had some of thechildren’s hand made baubles and a paintedwooden Father Christmas, which had taken prideof place when she was a child. They watchedFrench and Saunders, played Trivial Pursuit andenjoyed each other’s company.

A new millennium arrived. The world didn’t endbut Mary’s world had changed forever. Herhusband had died and Christmas was now spent ather children’s houses. A new happiness settledupon her now. She had three beautifulgrandchildren to spoil and she loved to listen totheir laughter and Christmas excitement.

Ruth came out of the kitchen and watched herfamily. Sam and the three children wereentangled in a game of Twister and gigglinguncontrollably. Her mother was snoring gently ina chair, a smile curling her lip. Strictly ComeDancing was on the television and the tree wasgiving a warm glow to the room. Ruth saw thepainted wooden Father Christmas, perched in itsusual place, and smiled.

The Far Side Gallery 1By Gary LarsonIf there’s any doubt thatGary Larson is some kind ofcomic genius, it wasdispelled when they built amuseum in San Francisco andfilled it with his cartoons.Seeing the world throughLarson’s eyes is viewing itthrough a pair of Dame Edna-style glasses. He finds thefunny in the ordinary and Iguarantee you’ll never lookat cows and chickens in quitethe same way again. The FarSide books can be passedfrom grandparents to parentsto children and all will beequally tickled by Larson’shumour.

At the beginning of the 20th century sending your relatives or friends a seasonal greetings postcardof where you lived would have been very fashionable. This postcard is dated 23rd December 1906and addressed to Mr & Mrs Powell, Chelston, Torquay, Devon and is signed ‘With love from Fannie’– Highfields Road, Ashtead.

Most of the buildings in the picture still remain to this day. On the left is the Brewery Inn. Thefrontage shown in the picture was replaced by the current mock Georgian style in the 1930s. Onthe right behind the tree, is the Leg of Mutton and Cauliflower. The red brick frontage dates fromthe 1890s. If we continue along the right hand side up to the Almshouses, according to the 1910Street Directory the following businesses would have catered for your everyday needs. There wasthe London County and Westminster Bank, Frederick Atkinson Chemist, Sydney Wilcox Dairyman,Norman’s Stores (Joseph Felton), Johnson’s Stationers, Newsagents and Printers, Sanders GroceryStore, Barnett Wood Dairy, William Thorne Cycle Maker, John Symonds Butcher, William MerrittGreengrocer, Henry Richards Watchmaker, The National Telephone Co. Ltd (Call Office), HenryMoore Corn Merchants, Lawrence and Marsland Plumbers, John Haseman and Sons Builders, andJohn Gadsby Provision Merchant.

The 1911 Census for Ashtead shows a Miss. Julia Powell of independent means born 1860 –Victoria, Australia living in a house called ‘Lauriston’, together with a cook and a parlour maid. The 1911 Census for Torquay records Mr. Levi Powell, wife Jane, together with their son Horacemanaging the ‘Sharron Private Boarding House’, Greenway, Chelston.

Christmas with Dickensby Ted Bruning

Charles Dickens is often credited with inventingChristmas, or at least reinventing it and giving it itsmodern form. A Christmas Carol must be one of themost-filmed books ever, and the name of its centralcharacter, Scrooge, has entered the language. Yetit is one of his shorter works – a novella rather thana novel – and was only written to recoup theauthor’s finances after the failure of MartinChuzzlewit.

A Christmas Carol was an instant success, andDickens followed it up with four more Christmasnovellas between 1844 and 1848 (The Cricket on theHearth of 1845, actually outsold A Christmas Carol),with 17 short stories published in the seasonaleditions of his two magazines, Household Words andAll the Year Round, between 1850 and 1867.

Christmas badly needed reinventing. In thecountryside, the grand old midwinter feast ofmedieval and earlier times had been drivenunderground by Puritan opposition before andduring the Interregnum; and even after theRestoration it never really recovered its previoussignificance. And in the burgeoning industrial citiesof the 18th and early 19th centuries, commerceallowed no pause for 12 days of ritual merriment. The shops didn’t even close.

A companionable man, Dickens saw this as a greatsocial evil. The traditional Christmas festivities hadbeen communal events, and it was the sociable andcommunal side of Christmas that Dickenscelebrated. Although privately he was a devout ifunorthodox Christian, you will find little of thereligious side of Christmas in his writings. Scrooge, frightened out of his miserly ways, does not rushout to church on Christmas morning but goesvisiting.

And at the heart of The Pickwick Papers is theChristmas Eve ball at Manor Farm, where Wardlehosts a blow-out of Lucullan proportions at whichall comers, including the Pickwickians, arewelcome.

It would be a wonderful but wholly impossibleendeavour to seek to recreate that feast at DingleyDell. For one thing the sheer quantity of alcoholconsumed – hot punch, mulled ale, warmed claret, brandy and hot water for the coachman, the“something good” enjoyed by Sam Weller and theFat Boy at the Blue Lion at Muggleton, the “hotelder wine, well-qualified with brandy and spice” -would give your GP a fit. For another, even themost rabid “political correctness gone mad”merchant would have to admit that the gameenjoyed by the partygoers (after the dancing to“the only harp in all Muggleton” and the blind

man’s buff) wasdangerous to the pointof insanity. This was snap-dragon.The lights wereextinguished, and a“ghost” in white sheetand wild wigpresented a tray ofraisins which had beensoaked in brandy andset alight. These theplayers would have tograb without burningtheir fingers (hencethe modernexpression); and “when fingers enough wereburned, and all the raisins were gone, they satdown by the huge fire of blazing logs to asubstantial supper and a mighty bowl of wassail inwhich the hot apples were hissing and bubbling”.More booze.

Perhaps, then, a truly Dickensian Christmas is toostrong for modern stomachs. But one thing wemight try is turning off the TV. No Wizard of Oz,The Great Escape, The Sound of Music or even AChristmas Carol. He believed in togetherness:friends, relations, neighbours, and strayPickwickians all joining in one great joyous riot.

Transition AshteadWorking towards sustainable consumption

Ho ho ho, don’t feed the dustbin!!The festive season is just around the corner once again – and there are lots of ways to reduceyour Christmas footprint without turning into a humbug!

Wasted food is the big one – as a nation we throw out £12bn worth of food and drinkevery year – a staggering average of £480 per household (£680 for families) £6.7bn worthof food goes off, sometimes unopened or started but not finished, while the remaining£4.8bn of wastage comes from us over-catering, with Christmas contributing a largeportion to that total. Families increase their grocery spend by about 20% over theChristmas period. How can you avoid this? Easy ways include checking the cupboards, finding out what non-perishables are still there from last year; making a shopping list, resisting the temptation to buy the fancy gourmand offerings that the kids won’t eat andyou will be too full to fancy. Share those BOGOF (buy 1 get 1 free) offers with a friend –how much cheddar can you eat in a week anyway? And use the freezer to prepare inadvance and save any left-overs, cutting down on what ends up in the recycling bin. Be

inventive – you can freeze sliced cake by putting greaseproof paper between each slice, so youcan defrost a few slices as you need them, rather than the whole cake (a good way to stop to having

a slice “just to finish it up” – and spreading the calories over a longer time) And if your fridge is full, you may be able to store some perishables in (fox-proof) tins the garage or car if the weather is coldand so stop them going off before they can be eaten.

The tradition of giving presents in winterdates back at least to Roman times, whenthe emperor was presented with evergreenbranches and, later, honey, cakes and gold. But times change and simple offerings havebeen replaced by computer games, plastictoys and helicopter lessons. But gift-givingis the other major waste-generating activityof the festive period – last year it’s beenestimated £4bn of gifts were unwanted -£92 per person, and many such gifts end upon Ebay (quite a good solution to theproblem!). It is a time when manyelectronic gadgets are bought but if youwere to buy at least three fewer this year,it would save more than 122kg CO2 if books

were bought instead. And there could be an embedded lesson for the kids in doing that too, gettingthem to read rather than “gadget”… Maybe it’s time to re-think what you give – maybe some goodlocally produced wine or beer, some home-made jam or chutney, a “meal out promise“ for the longdark days before Spring arrives, a personalised photo album…gifts that may be cheaper, greener, butmore individual.

Having a greener yuletide could mean you can greet the new year with a healthier bank balance, ahealthier waistline and a really empty dustbin. Now that would be a Christmas to remember….

Our next Open Meeting will be on Thursday 6th December, at Ashtead Peace Memorial Hall, 7:30-9pm,see the web site for details.

1. Use pillows – Sitting on top of; or placing a pillow inthe base of your spine can make a big difference inhelping your spine to sit in the right position withoutcreating pain but instead aiding comfort. Thisprevents the lower back and stiffness we mayexperience when standing up from sitting for toolong.

2. Relax your shoulders – sitting for too long with yourshoulders up by your ears can lead to issues such asheadaches, shoulder blade pain and neck pain. If youare not sure that they are relaxed, shrug yourshoulders to your ears and then relax them downagain.

3. Sit Straight! - Pull yourself straight from your chestbone. DO not push your shoulders backwards. Thiseven aids better breathing as it helps your lungs toinflate more than they do when they arecompressed when slumping. It helps to distributethe centre of gravity more evenly through the spine.

4. Tuck in your chin – This will help to prevent yourhead from sitting ahead of your body, this is badbecause it can cause all the weight to sit at the topof your shoulders giving a ‘buring like sensation’ itcan also aid to getting a rounded lump at the bottomof the neck.

5. Hips are ABOVE your Knees - this reduces

compression on the lower back vertebrae, this isespecially important in preventing arthritis and wearand tear

6. Visual Display Unit is within eye-line –If working infront of a computer, when you are sitting upright inyour chair. If not this can lead to neck pain, lowerback pain, RSI

7. Mouse is not too far away from reach – thisprevents mid back pain. Reaching means your bodyis out of alignment and therefore putting unduestress on joints

8. Regular breaks from sitting – gets circulation flowingaround the body, reducing muscle stiffness, and jointtightness. Take a short walk for 3-5 minutes after 30-40 minutes of sitting to prevent muscle stiffeningand aching.

9. Keyboard at elbow height – This prevents yourshoulders from tensing up and causing tightnessthrough the neck area.

10.Use Wrist supports – This is to prevent RSI orrepetitive strain injury and Carpel tunnel syndrome. You know you have these if you feel a little ache inthe elbow area during or after typing for a while, orif you feel a tingling sensation around the thumb andindex finger.

Tommy is a handsome boy who had been astray for some time, before being trappedand brought into care. He was traumatised

and hence very feisty; it has taken him four months to be readyfor homing.

Tommy loves being stroked, brushed and playing with his toys; heis becoming more and more affectionate by the day. He may takea while to settle in to a new home and needs an owner who hasexperience with cats, and who will give him the time andpatience he needs to give his trust all over again. It will certainlybe well worth the wait. But definitely no young children.

Volunteers needed for new elderly care projectAge UK Surrey are recruiting volunteers to help run a newproject called Proactive Care for the Elderly, which is beingtrialled for a year in the north of Surrey and will hopefully gocounty-wide in the future.

The role will be to visit elderly people (aged 75+) in their home at a pre-arranged timeand conduct an interview with them (with a questionnaire at first), in order to get adetailed picture of their care needs. The completed questionnaire will be sent to theirGP surgery, where a programme of care and support will be drawn up for them. Theaim is to keep people out of hospital as long as possible. Regular follow up visits will bescheduled, at intervals depending on the patient’s level of need.

Volunteer visitors will ideally continue to act as good neighbours, being a link betweenthe patient and their surgery and providing information about services availablelocally. Training will be given and there will be monthly meetings for monitoring andadditional training.

Practices in Ashtead, Epsom, Worcester Park, Banstead and other parts of the mid-Surrey area will to be participating in this project.

Contact Richard Jeffries on 01483 534706 [email protected] for more details.

MOLE VALLEY POLICE COLUMNOperation Candlelight:Burglary campaign

Operation Candlelight launched by SurreyPolice is an initiative focusing on reducingdwelling burglaries in Surrey.

‘Are you on a burglar’s to-do list?’ is themessage from Surrey Police during theinitiative which aims to help householders getin the mind of a burglar and understand whatthey look out for prior to committing thecrime.

We traditionally see a rise in burglary offencesover the autumn and winter months with thelonger, darker nights and increased spendingover the Christmas period. By encouragingresidents to see their property from a burglar’spoint of view, we hope to influence a long-term behavioural change and reduce burglaryoffences. As part of the initiative, SurreyPolice will also be carrying out additionaloperational activities targeting high risk areasand known offenders.

In addition to increased patrols across allareas, local officers will be visiting propertieswhich appear to show “vulnerabilities” tobeing targeted by burglars. This could beobserving windows being left open, back gatesbeing clearly insecure etc. If the homeowneris present, officers will take the opportunity tospeak with them to highlight the risks theyhave observed and to give basic advice on howto minimise these. If no one is at home whenofficers visit, they will leave a card which willdetail their concerns and directing people towhere they can obtain additional advice abouttheir home and property security.

Anyone who is concerned about the security oftheir home and property can always requestfree, impartial advice from Mole Valley’s CrimeReduction Advisor, Mike Bessent. If you wouldlike to make an appointment to see Mike, please call in on 101 or email the local SaferNeighbourhood Team direct [email protected]

You can dramatically reduce the chances ofbeing burgled by taking just a few simplemeasures:

Never leave door or car keys, wallets orhandbags within reach of a letterbox, dooror window.

Make your house look occupied whennobody is home by using an automatictimer to switch interior lights on and off.Putting some downstairs lights to come onwith a timer switch can be a good idea.We do not recommend having a landinglight come on with the ground floor indarkness as this does not convince anyonethat the premises are occupied. A lowlevel hall light on a timer would be abetter option.Set your burglar alarm whenever you leaveyour home. If you don’t have an alarm, werecommend you get one fitted.Always close your windows when you areout, and ensure French windows and patiodoors are secure.Dispose of packaging carefully. Emptyboxes left outside can advertise to thieveswhat they can find inside.Going away? Cancel milk, newspaper andother regular deliveries and ask a friend orlocal Neighbourhood Watch scheme to keepan eye on your home.Mark your valuables with a propertymarking product and place signs andstickers around your home, making it clearthat your property is marked. Photographyour valuables and keep a description ofthem.Always secure your shed and garage anddon’t leave ladders or other tools outsidewhich could help a burglar gain access toyour house.

How you can help the Born Free FoundationFrom small beginnings, international charitythe Born Free Foundation has grown into aglobal force for wildlife.

Started as Zoo Check in 1984 and becoming theBorn Free Foundation in 1991, the charity wasfounded by Bill Travers and Virginia McKennaOBE, stars of the 1966 classic film ‘Born Free’.It was during the filming of the movie and theirclose proximity to lions whilst in Kenya thatthe couple came to believe that wild animalsbelong in the wild, not incarcerated incaptivity, sparking a lifelong commitment to

wildlife.

Today, Virginia, who lives in near Dorking, remains a trustee of the charity and is stillinvolved in its many and varied projects, devoted to compassionate conservation and animalwelfare.

Born Free, working from its head office in Horsham, takes action worldwide to protectthreatened species in their natural habitat, working to safeguard lions, elephants, tigers, gorillas, wolves, polar bears, dolphins, marine turtles and many more species.

The charity never forgets the individual, believing that every animal is important, andtherefore works to prevent individual animal suffering. As part of the ethos to ‘Keep Wildlifein the Wild’, Born Free works to phase out zoos and rescues animals from lives of misery intiny cages, providing them with lifetime care at sanctuaries in their natural habitat.

This Christmas, Born Free needs your support to help them continue to protect hundreds ofthousands of animals worldwide. They have a wide range of gifts available perfect for thefestive season, all raising vital funds to help ‘Keep Wildlife in the Wild’.

The beautiful and stylish Moon-Signs jewellery range, available in silver oryellow gold, depicts a person’s ‘Moon Sign’ (Virgo Moon Sign pictured right), theastrological notion of revealing a deeper side to a personality than that of atraditional sun sign. Attractively packaged with a scroll that tells more aboutsomeone’s deeper self, Moon-Signs jewellery makes a unique and elegant gift forChristmas.

Another unusual festive gift that benefits Born Free are the ‘Gifts in Kind’ – a unique rangeof imaginative gift cards that help to bring real festive cheer to rescued, orphaned and

endangered wild animals around the world. From A ‘Meal for Two Beneath theStars’ (where the meal is for rescued lions,Dolo, pictured left and Safia, being givenlifetime care at a Rescue Centre inEthiopia) to a ‘Piece of Paradise’ (to helpprotect the threatened habitat of wildturtles in Tanzania), the beautifully-presented gift card will directly help a wildanimal.

Winter PlantersBy Pippa Greenwood

Even if you’re sure you’re not going toventure into your garden much this winter, make sure you have every possibleencouragement by creating a winter planteror two. They will not only look gorgeousfrom the warm comfort of your house, butwill also help to coax you outside from timeto time.

Choose a larger container as it’s more likelyto protect the roots on the plants due to thegreater volume of compost. I’d avoid anycontainer less than 30cm (12in) diameter ifpossible.

Any container will insulate the roots a little, but one made from thick wood (such as awooden trough or window box, or a half-barrel) will be very effective. Good quality, fairy chunky plastic also works quite well.Try to avoid metal as this tends to conductcold.

Warm undergarments are all the rage forwinter planters. A lining of bubble-wrappolythene or even a few layers of old fabricor carpet, sandwiched between the sides ofthe container and the compost will help tokeep both compost and roots warm.

If you live in a particularly cold area, orsimply want to decrease the risk of winterdamage further, try to position winterplanters out of the windiest areas. Ifpossible place them fairly close to a housewall on the south or west side as this willhelp to provide a little extra warmth.

You’ll be amazed at the range of plantsavailable at your local garden centre foradding winter colour and interest to potsand planters. Some of my favourites are theuniversal or other winter flowering pansiesor even hardier smaller flowered violas.

For some seriously sturdy winter colour, trythe winter flowering heathers as these makea good base for the display and you can thenadd trailing plants such as variegated ivies

to help provide extra colour, texture andinteresting leaf shapes. All these plantswill last for years, not just the wintermonths.

At this time of year, garden centres mayoffer very tiny versions of shrubs such asskimmias, Pieris or hollies and many of thedwarf conifers. They will provide goodcolour and interest in a container for ayear or two and can then be planted inyour garden to reach their full size.In warmer areas, you can add brightpatches of colour to your display using the‘winter cherry’ or solanum which hasbright yellow and orange fruits. You couldalso use a few winter flowering cyclamenbut these definitely need a very shelteredspot such as a window box on a protectedwall.

Don’t forget to add in a few early springflowering bulbs such as miniaturenarcissus, crocus and miniature iris. Hidethem beneath the roots of your winterbedding plants; you’ll forget they arethere until they burst out in spring.

Visit Pippa’s websitewww.pippagreenwood.com and sign up for‘Grow Your Own with Pippa Greenwood’.Choose from a fantastic selection ofvegetables that Pippa will send to you at justthe right time for planting AND each week youreceive an email telling you all you need toknow to ensure great results – from just £29for up to 66 garden-ready plants.

James and William Bradley (pictured above) of JB Landscapes would like to thank all their newcustomers, friends and family for the tremendous support they’ve received during the first sixmonths of their new business venture.

You’ll recall that we took the big plunge to start their new landscaping business back in May ofthis year and with your support have been working non-stop for the last six months, trying toretain a ‘local’ feel to their business and keeping prices extremely competitive, in tough economictimes…

As you know we specialise in both hard and soft Landscaping, and with my brother William’sexperience from the Vineries we offer garden design and makeover, alongside the supply of plantsas well. To compliment our local advertising campaign we are in the process of applying to ‘TheDirectory’ (The Little Green Book) to reinforce our reputation as a trustworthy business offeringfair prices to all. We are delighted to confirm that we are now part of the trusted CheckatradeScheme. And that’s only been possible because we’ve received such positive feedback.

Looking towards winter there is a tendency to ‘shut up shop’ for the garden, but it’s a great timeto get fences fixed, trees cut, and even patios and driveways repaired. Alongside this we’ll beproviding a supply and delivery service for rock salt and all those other essentials you’ll need forwinter. So if you need anything let us know!

Thanks for all your support

InventionsChristmas Tree LightsThere’s nothing that says ‘Christmas hasarrived’ as much as a Christmas treebeautifully illuminated with lights.

Some say that the tradition dates as farback as the 1600s when wealthy Germanfamilies would decorate their trees withsmall candles held in place with pins ormelted wax. Owing to the danger of firehowever, the candles would only stay lit forseveral minutes at a time with homeowners standing nervously by. Even aftercandle holders and lanterns becameavailable, fires were common and insurancecompanies started refusing to pay claims.

The solution was provided by a very well-known name and its unveiling must be oneof the greatest publicity stunts of all time.In December 1880, in order to publicise hislatest invention, Thomas Edison hung astring of electric lights around hislaboratory in New Jersey. Passers-by weremesmerised by the beautiful display and

associated it with yuletide celebrations. Two years later one of Edison’s inventors,Edward Johnson, lit a Christmas tree with80 small bulbs and by 1900, Christmasdisplays with lights started appearing indepartment store windows. On ChristmasEve, 1923, President Coolidge lit theNational Christmas Tree near the WhiteHouse with 3,000 lights.

A string of lights cost about $12 which putbuying them way out of reach of ordinaryAmerican families. General Electric, whohad purchased the rights to Edison’s bulbs, even released advertisements suggestingfamilies rented them. It wasn’t until 1925when the Sadacca family, who owned anovelty lighting business, started massmanufacturing Christmas lights, that theybecome affordable.

Today you can take your pick ofincandescent or LED lights. Either way, what a pleasure it is to light up your tree inthese cold winter months.
