Meeting October 28 President Gail McCulloch was delighted to welcome our guest speaker Anthony Styan, Dr Fiona Scarff and Mark and Ros Lang who are good friends of Heather and Keith McNaught, who were not able to be at the meeting. Gail thanked Bev and Ian who kindly volunteered to look after them and make them feel welcome, and all members

Announcements Dr Fiona Scarff On Monday, 2 December Dr Fiona Scarff will be the guest speaker. She came tonight to talk to the members about the research that is underway at Murdoch University, to help our beloved feline friends coexist with native wildlife, in the suburbs. It’s no secret that cats prey on birds, lizards and small mammals. With this in mind, Dr Scarff and the Veterinary & Life Sciences faculty at Murdoch are testing an effective solution for cat owners and prey alike. It’s called the cat bib and it consists of a soft fabric flap which attaches to the collar. The bibs have already been shown to be highly effective in reducing bird captures, and also provide a level of protection to other prey animals.

Youth Focus Fundraiser The Rotary Club of Melville held an evening to raise money for Youth Focus. The Guest speaker was Dr Craig Challen, who in 2019 was awarded Australian of the Year, with Dr Richard Harris, for their heroic efforts to save 12 boys and their soccer coach from flooded caves in Thailand. It was also a great opportunity to support the Rotary Club of Melville. Fourteen people from our Club attended, and all of us thoroughly enjoyed hearing the story of the rescue, first hand. Two things I took away from the night were: - One, that Dr Craig Challen didn’t feel they would achieve rescuing everyone successfully, so they were thrilled beyond belief when they did. The other story was about how they came to choose the order that the children would be rescued. As the rescuers couldn’t choose, they asked the coach, who felt he couldn’t choose, so they put it to the children themselves. The children, who had all ridden to the caves on their bikes, decided that the four who lived the furthest away and so had the longest ride home, should go first. The sooner they got home the less trouble they might be in!!!

Head Phones for Dementia Robin Hamilton read that the Board were investigating Head Phones for Dementia as a project. He made contact with the Rotary Club of Geraldton - Greenough and found out all the details. Robin then purchased a headset and had his daughter put sixteen hours of music onto the disk. Robin then gave his wife, Gill; the set of headphones and she thoroughly enjoyed listening to the music. Robin felt it would be better if the music could be started at different places, rather than the beginning each time. The family ensure the battery is fully charged.

Ladies’ Lunch I have had a number of requests for a ladies’ lunch, like we have had in the past. I have sent an email to all members. As I don’t have many email addresses for your wives or partners, I would appreciate you sharing the invitation with them so that they can let me know if they would like to attend.

Anthony Styan from City of South Perth Library, shared with us a number of stories about South Perth in the past.

In the 1880s, a number of Chinese gardeners had arrived and set up market gardens on Sir James Mitchell Park. The Chinese market gardens operated successfully for many years, despite numerous attempts by local authorities to serve them with notices, alleging uncleanliness or health hazards. They lasted until the 1950s before they were dismantled.

We heard an interesting story about opium being hidden in sausages so it could be smuggled.

A ferry service from Perth, established in the 1880s, made the area much more accessible and in 1898 two major attractions opened — The Zoological Gardens and the Windsor Hotel. They both became popular with tourists from the town of Perth across the river.

The oldest surviving physical link with the pioneering days of the Colony of Western Australia is the Old Mill, in South Perth. Governor James Stirling established the Swan River Colony in 1829. Grain and flour were vital for the new colony as bread was the staple food. William Shenton recognized the need for a more efficient method of milling.

Shenton built a windmill in Fremantle before building, in 1835, a second mill at Point Belches (now Mill Point) that remains today Unfortunately, the mill was not a profitable concern. It was not well located in relation to the major markets and erratic winds meant that it was often unable to grind wheat. There were also rival mills.

One of the more significant characters associated with the mill was a lessee, Thomas Brown, known as ‘Satan Browne’. He was an architect and convicted forger, who had arrived in the Colony in 1865. In 1879 he took out a lease on the mill and added a balcony and viewing platform and named it the Alta Gardens Hotel. The property deteriorated and despite being resumed by the government in 1929 little effort was made to conserve it until 1957. In that year H. L. Brisbane and Wunderlich (later Bristile) agreed to take up a long lease for the site from the State Government, and restored and repaired the mill and miller’s cottage, creating a folk museum and brick and tile display to advertise their products. In 1973 the Old Mill, due to its cultural heritage, was classified by the National Trust.

Page 8: THE ATTADALE VIEW · 2019-10-31 · from City of South Perth Library, shared with us a number of stories about South Perth in the past. Anthony Styan, President Gail McCulloch and

Restoration work was carried out on the mill in the early 1990s and today the Old Mill comes under the auspices of the City of South Perth. It is no longer a national Trust property.

Anthony’s talk was interesting, informative and entertaining.

Winners The winner of the Door Prize was Ian. Bev was the winner of the Raffle, but not the Joker.

Reports

House and Sub-division Project Greg, as Chairman of this project committee, spoke about a proposed House and Sub-division project. The proposal is to buy a house on a block of land that can be subdivided. The house and subdivided block will then be sold and the profits used to fund Rotary projects. Greg will personally contact all members to ask them if they would like to contribute financially to this project and explain how it would work.

The house and land will be purchased through the RCA Neil Henley Foundation Inc with money provided by the Foundation and from members. The members will receive interest on their contributions and to facilitate this we need to change the Constitution of the Foundation. Martin has sent out an email to members regarding the necessary changes to the Constitution. We will have 28 days for members to have a look at it and make comments or ask questions before voting on the proposal at our meeting on November 25.

In Giving We Receive (IGWR) Quiz Night Mal Bennett spoke about the very successful and enjoyable Quiz Night held on Friday, October 25. He was delighted to announce that we made an amazing profit of $6780.00. The money raised, will be used to improve the education of children in Nepal,

A huge thank you to Mal and Elaine Bennett who worked very hard with the committee from St Paul’s, headed by Maureen Lucivero, to make this night such a success.

Mal and Elaine Bennett

Mal thanked members for inviting family and friends to make up tables. In particular he thanked Gillian, Giovanna, McCullochs, McNaughts, Pittaways, Calceis, Bev Moffat, John Sharp, and Carole for their donation of prizes.

He made special thanks to Abby and Kerry for their donation of prizes and in particular the generous door prize of a weekend stay at their Marina View Chalets at Port Bouvard.

Congratulations to these two tables who tied for second place

Youth Portfolio Gillian reported on the Rotaract meeting, she attended with Gail and Colin McCulloch, to help establish a new Rotoract Club. Under the guidance of Samantha Fewster, those people interested in joining or supporting a new Club, plus a few others, attended a picnic and decided that they would meet again in another two weeks. At the quiz night Gillian put out a brochure about Rotary Youth Leadership Awards (RYLA). Since then, she has received an email from someone expressing an interest in attending, and Kerry has suggested someone who would also like to attend. National Youth Science Forum (NYSF) Gillian was pleased to relay a message she had received from our candidate for 2020. Kate had attended the information evening and reception for NYSF 2020 and was feeling very excited about her participation in this fantastic opportunity. 48th Rotary Ladies Seminar and Luncheon Patricia reported that Elaine, Carole, Gail, Bev and herself attended this event last Saturday. Various local artists had their work on display which was also for sale. We were able to hear a number of guest speakers, who spoke on a wide range of topics. There were about two hundred people attending. Patricia recommended Rotarians come along, but also that they invite their friends so they can learn about the wonderful work Rotary does.

The event raised money for Shelter Box and End Polio Now.

ShelterBoxes

Our sturdy green ShelterBoxes are designed to help people who have lost everything. They are filled with practical tools and utensils that help to create the framework for everyday life. Each contains a family-sized tent that protects people from the elements and provides a safe space in which people can start to recover from physical and emotional trauma. The contents differ depending on the disaster and the climate, but items such as solar lights, water storage and purification equipment, thermal blankets and cooking utensils help start the process of creating a home.

Rotary has been working to eradicate polio for more than 30 years. Our goal of ridding the world of this disease is now closer than ever. As a founding partner of the Global Polio Eradication Initiative, we've reduced polio cases by 99.9 percent since our first project to vaccinate children in the Philippines in 1979. We've helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children in 122 countries. So far, Rotary has contributed more than $1.8 billion toward eradicating the disease worldwide.

Melbourne Cup Sweep Ian has very kindly offered to run a Melbourne Cup Sweep. He circulated sheets offering people the opportunity to put their names down on the sweep sheets.

Rack Cards Congratulations to Giovanna on producing the very informative rack cards pictured below. Colin took them out to the office of Ben Morton MP, where they were printed and then to Office Works to have them cut. Colin has taken some to the Melville Library and others will be placed in public places.

Rotary 4 Way Test Speech Contest ~ State Final This is a great programme for young people. Everyone who has had the opportunity to hear the contestants’ talks are always very impressed. The programme has changed to now all take place in the same school year. In the past, the State Final took place at Annual Conference the following year, thus enabling a large audience to hear the contestants. The State Final is now a stand-alone event and we need to ensure it is well attended. Rotarians and all interested people are asked to come along and invite grandchildren and other young people to listen to these amazing speakers. It may inspire them to take part in this very worthwhile experience. See below for all the details.
