Welcome to the Australian Surf Life Saving Championships 2014

A message from the Minister for Police; Tourism; Road Safety and Women’sInterestsWelcome to The Australian Surf Life SavingChampionships 2014, where thousands ofathletes will this week compete alongside someof the biggest names in surf lifesaving history.

The Aussies, as the event is affectionately known, is one of thelargest competitions of its kind and returns to Perth this year afterlast being held at Scarborough Beach in 2009.

Over the week-long program, over 4,500 surf lifesaversrepresenting 311 clubs will compete in an action-packed scheduleof 382 events.

Scarborough Beach has been synonymous with surf lifesavingsince volunteers started patrols in 1928, making it the perfectbackdrop for this world class event.

Scarborough is regarded as one of Perth’s iconic beaches and isan important coastal tourism precinct in Western Australia, withthe highest concentration of accommodation in the metropolitanarea outside of the CBD.

As the Tourism Minister and local member for Scarborough, I ampleased to welcome you to this outstanding event which willshowcase surf boat and ski races, flag races and the famousironman and ironwoman competition.

If you are visiting Western Australia to compete in The Aussies, orto enjoy the energy and excitement as a spectator, I invite you totake the opportunity to explore our extraordinary State.

Consider our vast array of tourism experiences including thevibrant port of Fremantle, tranquil waters of Rottnest Island andPerth’s stunning beaches to make your trip one to trulyremember.

The Hon. Liza Harvey MLAMinister For Police; Tourism; Road Safety and Women’s Interests

A message from the City of Stirling MayorThe City of Stirling is extremely proud to be onceagain hosting The Australian Surf Life SavingChampionships 2014 at Scarborough Beach.

This is the fourth time that Scarborough beachhas hosted these championships and thebeachfront’s open-air Amphitheatre will onceagain provide the perfect place for visitors and

spectators to sit back, relax and take in all the action, while gazingat our beautiful coastline.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank Tourism WesternAustralia through Eventscorp, Surf Life Saving (WA), and Surf LifeSaving Australia. I would also like to commend everyone involvedin the planning and running of this event, for their hard work, enthusiasm and dedication.

On behalf of the City of Stirling I would like to wish the competitorsall the best for the championships and welcome the manyspectators who will be watching this event from the sand. Pleaseenjoy the hospitality of the City and enjoy our magnificent beach.

Cr Giovanni Italiano JP, MayorCity of Stirling

A message from the President of Surf Life Saving AustraliaIt gives me great pleasure to welcome all our surf lifesaversfrom around Australia, to The Australian Surf LifesavingChampionships.

I would like to take to take this opportunity to thank Perthand the State of Western Australia for being the ‘host’ for

this major event to be held here on the golden sands of Scarborough Beachfrom Monday 31 March to Sunday 6 April.

I would also like to thank Surf Life Saving WA and Scarboro SLSC for theirassistance and collaboration on this fantastic event.

The Aussies is the peak surf sports event for Surf Life Saving which challengesthe essential lifesaving skills of members needed to perform rescues in thesurf.

Scarborough Beach will be a sea of pink lycra vests, now the officialcompetition uniform worn by all lifesavers at The Aussies – and just one ofmany safety developments in the sport

Surf Life Saving Australia has continually worked to ensure best practice riskmanagement for our sporting events which includes independent riskauditing in each and every area of The Aussies arena, from Under 15’s toOpens and Masters prior to competition each day.

2014 is expected to bring together over 4,500 Surf Life Saving competitors tothis very beach, plus hundreds of local spectators.

On behalf of Surf Life Saving Australia (SLSA), I would especially like to thankthe WA Government, WATC, the City of Stirling, our event sponsors, corporate partners and the local community.

I would also like to thank the 400 strong volunteer network and the SLSA staffwho will make this event come to life.

I wish all competitors participating at the Championships, the very best ofluck as they battle it out in the waves and on the beach for lifesaving glory.

Graham Ford President, Surf Life Saving Australia

A message from the President of Surf Life Saving Western AustraliaSurf Life Saving WA is very pleased and proud to see TheAussies back in Western Australia. The Aussies is not onlythe pinnacle of surf sports but also one of the mostsignificant events on Australia’s sporting calendar. Surf LifeSaving is currently enjoying record growth in WA with clubmembership numbers increasing around nine per cent this

season to close to 20,000. Hosting The Aussies for a week at Scarborough willprovide a major profile boost for surf sports and surf live saving in generalwhich we hope will inspire even more West Australians to become membersof this great movement.

I want to publicly acknowledge the crucial support provided by the StateGovernment, through Tourism WA, as well as the City of Stirling and Surf LifeSaving Australia.

And a big thanks too to the thousands of interstate competitors, coaches andsupporters who’ve travelled to Perth – we hope your stay is both enjoyableand successful.

Mark IrwinPresident, Surf Life Saving Western Australia

Kurrawa’s two-time Olympian Ky Hurst has long been associated withgold at The Aussies and 2013 was no different as he swam and surfedhis way to his ninth Australian Open Surf Race title at North Kirra lastyear.

But the pressure will be on when he eyes-off an amazing 10th title atScarborough in 2014 with youngsters and prospective Rio openwater Olympians Simon Huitenga (City of Perth) and Victoria’s GoldCoast-based Sam Shepherd (North Burleigh) breathing down hisneck.

They are both looking at following Hurst’s pathway into the AustralianOlympic team – an honour Hurst achieved in Beijing in 2008 andLondon in 2012.

This year’s race will be as competitive as ever when you throw in thelikes of 2008 winner former Wanda and Cronulla swimmer ChrisAllum, now at Queenscliff, who has been so close on numerous otheroccasions , Terrigal’s Tim Schofield and Elouera’s Dane Farrell andTom O’Keefe, Nathan Smith (Manly) and Dev Lahey (Northcliffe).

The open surf race is a coveted title and has been won by a host ofgreat surfers and Olympians like Noel Ryan, Ernie Henry, JonDonohoe, Graham White, Graeme Windeatt, Ron McKeon, GraemeBrewer, Max Metzker and Mal Allen.

No WA club has ever won an Australian Open Surf Race – but longtime Perth-based 1992 Olympian, Deane Pieters, racing for Manlywon the title for the Sydney Northern Beaches club in 1990, winningbronze for Trigg Island in 1994.

The legendary Hall of Famer Don Morrison from Cottesloe hadgone close for WA in the 1940s – finishing with bronze in 1947 andsilver in massive seas at Manly behind Bobby Newbiggin in 1948before again bobbing up to finish with another bronze in 1955.

Hurst’s Kurrawa team mate, beach flags queen, Melissa Howard willalso be out to snare a record 10th Aussies gold – having lost just once(to Lisa Wright in 2005) since her first title in 2004 for Mollymook.

Howard has been the undisputed flags champion – winning in herfirst three in 2004-06-07 for Mollymook and remains unbeaten forKurrawa since 2007.

Meanwhile Mona Vale, from Sydney’s Northern Beaches, with BryceMunro at the helm will be chasing the club’s fourth straight open boatcrown to rival North Cottesloe’s four titles with Jack Alliss at the helmbetween 2006 and 2009.

In the board and ski area all eyes will be on prospective Rio kayakOlympian Lachlan Tame (Avoca) as he lines up for his fourth straightchampionship single ski gold against what always shapes up to be astar-studded field.

It is bound to include a host of local WA paddlers led by Trigg Islandtrio Brendan Sarson, Reece Baker and Dan Humble – gold medallistsin last year’s ski relay at North Kirra.

Meanwhile Manly’s London Olympian Naomi Flood has becomeunstoppable in the women’s ski races in recent years as she stampsherself as Australia’s greatest ever female ski paddler. The bigquestion is, can anyone stop her adding her fifth Aussie title?

Flood will be joined by team mates Candice Falzon, Jo Brigden Jonesand rising star Meike Kassulke. Falzon will be out to re-kindle oldrivalries and friendships after spending several seasons with City ofPerth. n
