THE BKMARK
July/August 2016
,,Welcome back Students
Since 2011, Nonviolent Carbondale has fostered community-driven
explorations of peace, compassion and social justice issues, includ-
ing five community-wide 11 Days initiatives, featuring 184 insight-
ful programs and exhibits. The library won the American Library
Association’s Excellence in Library Programming Award for our
leadership in this community effort. Nobel Peace Prize Nominee
John Dear started a nationwide Nonviolent Cities project emulating
our actions! This all happened with an eye toward joining commu-
nities across the world seeking to become Compassionate Commu-
nities www.charterforcompassion.org/index.php/communities. We
would like to make our Compassionate Community status official
with a city council resolution in 2016 to acknowledge our ongoing
effort and affirm our commitment to compassionate choices, efforts
and actions. Please take our survey at
www.nonviolentcarbondale.org to tell us about compassionate
efforts in our community, share ideas for future planning, and
support our official Compassionate Community status.
We want to hear
from you!
