BACC Board of Directors Avoiding Life’s Ruts by Mark Turner President/CEO of the Gilroy Chamber of Commerce

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

Early pioneers who helped settle and tame the Wild West had to overcome many challenges as they made progress toward success. Planning enough food and water, avoiding wild animals, maneuvering through unknown territory, overcoming disease, and arriving safely and successfully before inclementweather hindered their progress, were just a few of the factors to consider before loading up the wagons and heading out. Those who headed west were driven by the desire for opportunity and were inspired by the dream of land ownership, farming and freedom. Helping to spur the migration west was a newspaper editor by the name of John O’Sullivan who wrote, “...the right of our manifest destiny to over spread and possess the whole (land) of the continent which Providencehas given us for the development of the great experiment of liberty and federative development of self-government entrusted to us.” From the mid 1830s to the late 1860s, hundreds of thousands of settlers, ranchers, farmers, miners, fur traders, missionaries, businessmen and their families made their way through a network of emigrant trails. Following trails blazed by others was beneficial to those pioneers who traveled from the Midwest; however, they also had to avoid the ruts that were cut into the trails by the thousands of wagons before them. It’s been said that at the entrance to one trail a sign was posted that read, “Avoid this rut if you don’t want to be stuck for the next 25 miles.” Much like pioneers of old who had to carefully avoid the ruts in emigrant trails, today’s business professionals must avoid ruts in life’s paths if they hope to achieve their goals.

Develop a Routine, Not a Rut Some people begin each work day by planning and listing the priorities that need to be done while others plan their day the night before. Some will take the time to review their day’s work and see what was accomplished and how well it was done. Some take notes, make adjustments and look to see how they can improve. At the age of 20, Benjamin Franklin developed a list of 13 virtues (which can be found online) in order to continually improve his character. Regarding his work, Franklin wrote, “Industry. Lose no time; be always employed in something useful; cut off all unnecessary actions.” A daily routine will help you to be more focused, waste less time and be far more productive.

Develop Goals and Stay Focused on Them It’s good to have goals. What do you want to accomplish by the end of the year? How many sales calls do you want to make each week? How much money do want to have for retirement? When do you want to pay off a certain debt? Which musical

Farmers Insurance, Young AgencyContact: J. The process is straightforward and personalized to help make you smarter about insurance. Farmers has the knowledge and experience to help you better understand your coverage options--whether that’s auto, home, renters, business insurance and more.

Your chamber is growing...instrument would you like to learn? Setting goals increases one’s motivation, drive and achievement. Those who set goals have a tendency to demonstrate greater persistence and creativity in pursuit of those goals as well. Zig Ziglar once said, “I don’t care how much power, brilliance or energy you have, if you don’t harness it and focus it on a specific target, and hold it there you’re never going to accomplish as much as your ability warrants.” Developing, focusing, and working toward goals is one way to avoid falling into a rut. Develop an Accountability System From book clubs to CEO peer groups and everything in between, accountability keeps people accountable. Inviting trusted individualsinto your life for the purpose of accountability increases a senseof personal responsibility, improves performance, and helps toachieve potential. When a family in a covered wagon found themselves stuck in a rut, others came along side and assisted inthe effort to help them out. Allow others to assist you in youreffort to avoid falling into a rut, limiting and delaying yoursuccess. Trusted relationships are important in the advancementof one’s career and the development of their character. As Charlie“Tremendous” Jones said, “You will be the same person in 5 years as you are now, except for the people you meet and the books you read.” In the diaries of the pioneers who traveled the emigrant trails, they often referred to those trails as, the dusty road, steep road, rocky road, long road, endless road, tiresomeroad, and winding road. You can’t help but to get an image inyour mind of the difficulties and challenges those early pioneersfaced in their effort to reach their goals. In making your way through life, your professional career, and in your effort to avoid life’s ruts, remember to always take the high road.

Hello, everyone.

I belong to a Chamber professionals group from around the country, where members share ideas, ask questions, seek advice, and encourage one another.

And, because it’s importantnot to take life too seriously, there is some humor shared as well. Recently, one member posted this definition of a Chamber of Commerce:

Chamber of Commerce - (noun) - a local association to promote the interests of the business community in a particular place. The Chamber in your community is not affiliated with permits, water bills, city streets, or government.

They can not tell you why the local television channel isn’t working or why the train is stopped on the tracks. And no, they don’t have a sign you can borrow for grandma’s 90th birthday...

As the author stated, anyone who has worked at a Chamber can probably relate to thatlist of things the Chamber doesn’t do. It’s not uncommon for us to field questions about any of the topics mentioned above. And, most often, when a visitor or caller’s question begins with, “I have an oddquestion for you...,” it’s something we’ve heard before. The Chamber is the “411 of Bradford.” And that’s okay. After all, who wouldn’t want to be part of the organization that people turn to because they trust us to help them find the answers they need?

Kara’s message...continued from page 3

The first part of that definition - what we actually do - ties in to those random calls and visits as well. Our mission is “to promote and support the business community.”

We do that for you, our members, through referrrals (because some of those questions aren’t so odd after all!); through marketing -on Facebook, in weekly e-blasts, and in the monthly Chamber News; through networking; and through partnering with members for a variety of events and more. The more that people come to us for questions - Chamber-related or not - the more we can share with them what is happening in the community, what businesses and organizations are here to serve them, and how our members are able to help them meet their needs.

The larger and more comprehensive that our member network becomes, the more thoroughly we are able to fulfill our mission. We promote our members and always refer to them first - that’s one of the many benefits provided by your membership. So if you know someone who should be part of our network, but isn’t? Send them our way. Who knows, the services they offer just might be the right answer to the next “odd” phone call or visit we receive! Have a happy and safe 4th of July! And don’t forget, we look forward to seeing you at the Member Family Cookout!

Planning Ahead for Events

BACC NEWSLETTER | 814-368-7115 | bradfordchamber.com | www.facebook.com/BradfordPAChamber

6-9 months ahead• Develop invitation list; send first mailing or save-the-date. • Contract with speakers if necessary. • Design and prepare a printed invitation or brochure. • Review program with key participants. • Review and refine budget and committee assignments. 3-6 months ahead• Establish on-site registration plan, including personnel. • Plan logistics: room set-ups, food and beverage, decor, etc. • Begin preparation of registration materials, signage, etc. • Mail invitations and correspond with participants as needed. • Begin developing press releases. 2-6 weeks ahead• Finalize agenda. • Track attendance including who is attending, meal choices, and any special accomodations. • Make final food and beverage selections. • Confirm arrangments for audio-visual, room set up, parking. • Review planning committee activity and assign final tasks.

1 week ahead• Have final program printed. • Finalize attendance list and let vendors know how many people you are expecting. • Confirm arrangements with all vendors for catering, audio-visual, rentals, speakers, etc. Provide emergency contact info. Day of event• Walk through the program at the event site. • Arrive at least 30 minute before vendors arrive and at least 2 hours before guests. • Smile, take a deep breath, and enjoy your event! Are your events planned for the year? Send us the dates!

There are many companies, groups, and organizations who host events, large and small. Whether your event is annual, monthly or a one time benefit, people will want to plan their social calendar around it. In order to so, people frequently seek out information well in advance, and may need to choose between two events on the same date.

In order to avoid competing with another event, on or near your chosen date, we recommend that you check with the Chamber for possible conflicting events throughout the community on the dates you are considering. Let us know as soon as your date has been chosen so we can add it to the Calendar of Events - details can be filled in later!Ideally, planning a major event should begin at least one year prior. Sometimes, however, there isn’t ample planning time, or the event is smaller in scale. While this timeline can easily be adjusted, there are some general steps to consider: 12-18 months ahead• Select date. • Call potential facilities and do a site inspection. • Prepare a preliminary budget. • Determine any licensing issues for raffles or serving alcohol. • Contact appropriate associations and publications to begin the process of promoting the event. 9-12 months ahead• Determine theme/title of event. • Identify planning committees, define responsibilities, and select chairpersons, apply for raffle and liquor licenses. • Plan business and social agenda.• Establish event budget and determine cost to attendees.
