    The Beatles

The Beatles, also known as the Fab Four were an English rock band,

formed in Liverpool in 1960.George Harrison (guitar, sitar, vocals), John

Lennon (guitar, keyboards, vocals), Paul McCartney(bass, guitar, keyboards,

vocals), Ringo Starr (drums, percussion, vocals)were four young lads with no

formal music education, yet they were changing the world. There is no

denying that the Beatles were then, and remain to this day, the worlds most

famous and astonishing rock-n-roll band. Their irresistible charm, their

playful, witty personalities, their whimsical sense of humor and their natural

talents for music had immensely impact and influenced the lives of virtually all

who heard them. The Beatles had established a musical revolution of the

Sixties, introducing a fresh modern sound and affect the worlds view point of

what youth are capable of. To put it simply, the Beatles were simply

    legendary.

Their long journey begin when John Lennon, born in 1940, singer-songwriter

who rose to fame as one of the founding members of The Beatles, and

together with Paul McCartney formed one of the most successful songwriting

partnerships of the 20th century. Lennon and McCartney began playing

together in The Quarrymen in 1957; George Harrison joined later that year.

Before they became The Beatles, they were also Johnny and the Moondogs

and The Silver Beatles, joined at times by bandmates including bassist Stuart

    Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 - 10 April 1962) and drummer Pete Best (b. 24

November 1941); Best was replaced by Ringo to form the final foursome. The

early Beatles performed shows in Hamburg, Germany and Liverpool,

England, playing covers of early American rock and roll plus original songs by

Lennon and McCartney. Their 1962 release of "Love Me Do" charted in the U.

K., and in 1963 their song "She Loves You" was the biggest hit in U. K.

history. Their personal charm and charisma helped boost "Beatlemania," and

their tour of the U.S. in 1964 led to sold-out concerts and mob scenes. Their

moviesA Hard Day's Night(1964) and Help!(1965) capitalized on their

humor and youthful exuberance and were box office successes, and the hit

songs kept coming: in 1964 they had five straight number one albums. In the

late '60s their songs became more sophisticated and their worldwide celebrity

status prompted Lennon to joke "we're bigger thanJesus." By 1970 they were

no longer performing in public and were beginning to pursue individual

projects. In December of 1970 McCartney brought a lawsuit to dissolve The

Beatles as a legal entity, and the group broke up. Their hits are too numerous

to mention, and their impact on pop music can't be overstated. In 1980

Lennon was murdered, and in 2001 Harrison died of cancer, but McCartney

and Starr continue to have busy solo careers.

The Fab Four from Liverpool, England, startled the ears and energized the

lives of virtually all who heard them. Their arrival triggered the musical

revolution of the Sixties, introducing a modern sound and viewpoint that

parted ways with the world of the previous decade. The pleasurable jolt at

hearing She Loves You and I Want to Hold Your Hand - given the

doldrums into which rock and roll had fallen in recent years - was comparable

to the collective fever induced by Presleys Thats All Right (Mama) and

Heartbreak Hotel nearly ten years earlier.

The Beatles music - with its simultaneous refinement (crisp harmonies, solid

musicianship, canny pop instincts) and abandon (energetic singing and

playing, much screaming and shaking of mop-topped locks) ignited the

latent energy of youth on both sides of the Atlantic. They helped confer self-

identity upon a youthful, music-based culture that flexed its muscle in myriad

ways - not just as music consumers but also as a force for political

expression, social commentary and contemporary lifestyles.

Landing on these shores on February 7, 1964, they literally stood the world of

pop culture on its head, setting the musical agenda for the remainder of the

decade. The Beatles buoyant melodies, playful personalities and mop-topped

charisma were just the tonic needed by a nation left reeling by the senseless

assassination of its young president, John F. Kennedy, two months earlier.

Even adults typically given to dismissing rock and roll conceded that there

was substance in their music and cleverness in their quick-witted repartee.

Between the lines, and without obvious disrespect, the Beatles announced

the ascendancy of youth - and the inevitable coming of a generation gap as a

    result.
