The fact that they are true blue, leggy, Califor- nia beauties is also hard to miss. Born and raised in Lan- caster, Calif., the girls lived in Bakersfield while still in grade school. You may have heard of these two young ladies — who are better known in the country music industry as The Wheeler Sisters — on the radio lately. Their country hit single: “This Is Gonna Get Ugly” was just recently released. These two gals happen to also be my nieces! The sisters, who cur- rently live in Nashville, (Music City) Tennessee have signed a record contract with Ocala Records. The Wheeler Sisters unique sound derives from skillfully-blended harmonies with a distinc- tive quality that only sib- lings can create — and holds a direct relation- ship to their roots and the music they grew up listening to in Bakers- field known as the “Bak- ersfield Sound.” “We loved living in Bak- ersfield for a part of our childhood,” Christina told me. “Our ele- mentary school was centered in the cotton fields and we would love to see the little fibers of cotton blowing in the wind.” Cristina and Dani started wowing audi- ences when they were just kids. Dani recalls singing back up for Cristina at the Kern County fair when she was just 10 years old. What began as family fun making Christmas music CDs and perform- ing in school musicals blossomed into a full- time career. Although the sisters are seven years apart in age, the difference is barely noticeable as they always seem to be on the same page, laughing, talking, and usually fin- ishing each other’s sen- tences. Raised mainly on coun- try music, the girls claim a wide variety of influ- ences with Dani singing the praises of Buck Owens, Miranda Lam- bert, Patsy Cline and Adele, while Cristina reflects on her love for Billie Holiday, Etta James, Merle Haggard, Conway Twitty and Dolly. Besides harmonizing perfectly in their choices of music, the girls are capable of harmonizing their exercise routines as well. Besides enjoying their music, I have the pleas- ure of being their fitness trainer too, albeit on a long-distance basis at the moment! “Training with our Aunt Gina has taught us so much — she keeps us on track via computer with her ever-changing fitness routines so we have something new and different to try each week,” the music duo agreed. Cristina loves tabata, weight training and run- ning — and by the looks of her, she has kept true to her fitness regimen. Yoga and pilates keep Dani’s body and mind focused. “With the hectic grind of performing and traveling on the road, exercise can get us through the next per- formance by keeping our minds on music and our lungs at peak capacity.” The girls’ dream is to return to Bakersfield and practice the city’s unique “Bakersfield Sound” at Buck Owens’ Crystal Palace. I know they would pack the house! I am proud of my nieces and doubly proud that they have made a commitment to fitness all the while pursuing their music career. I am cer- tainly going to add their sassy new tune to my workout playlist! It’s a thrill to think I was even a small part of The Wheeler Sisters’ success. I wish our two local gals all the luck in the world. Gina Rolow is a local fitness instructor and the owner of Body By Gina, Personal and Group Training. COURTESY OF SAN JOAQUIN COMMUNITY HOSPITAL S an Joaquin Community Hospi- tal’s Maternity Care Center has been selected to participate in Best Fed Beginnings, a first-of- its-kind national effort to sig- nificantly improve breastfeeding rates in states where rates are currently the lowest. Although breastfeeding is one of the most effective preventive health meas- ures for infants and mothers, half of US born babies are given formula within the first week, and by nine months, only 31 percent of babies are breastfeeding at all. Best Fed Begin- nings seeks to reverse these trends by dramatically increasing the number of US hospitals implementing a proven model for maternity services that bet- ter supports a new mother’s choice to breastfeed. The National Initiative for Children’s Healthcare Quality (NICHQ) is leading the effort through a cooperative fund- ing agreement with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), and will be working closely with BabyFriendly USA, Inc. “SJCH is honored to have been cho- sen to participate in this important effort and to have the opportunity to improve our maternity care services to better support breastfeeding,” said Debbie Hankins, SJCH’s vice presi- dent of nursing and chief nursing offi- cer. “We recognize that for women who plan to breastfeed, the hospital experience strongly influences a moth- er’s ability to start and continue breastfeeding.” In addition to SJCH, 89 other hospi- tals are participating in this initiative and were selected from 235 applicants. The groups will work together in a 22- month learning collaborative, using proven quality improvement methods to transform their maternity care serv- ices in pursuit of “Baby-Friendly” des- ignation. This designation verifies that a hospital has comprehensively imple- mented the American Academy of Pediatrics-endorsed Ten Steps to Suc- cessful Breastfeeding, as established in the WHO/UNICEF Baby-Friendly Hos- pital Initiative. Breastfeeding rates are higher and disparities in these rates are virtually eliminated in hospitals that achieve this status. Breastfeeding has multiple health benefits for both infants and mothers. For infants, it decreases the incidence and severity of many infectious dis- eases, reduces infant mortality, and optimally supports neurodevelopment. It also decreases infants’ risk of becoming obese later in childhood. For mothers, breastfeeding decreases the risks of breast and ovarian cancers, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, and car- diovascular disease.
