Sunshine and Summer travel Plans

One thing that I absolutely love about Estonia is

the seasons. Why? Because it really makes you appreci-ate when summer finally arrives after a long cold and dark winter. Summer in Estonia means long days, out-door concerts and festivals, fresh local produce, and enjoying the sunshine on an outdoor terrace.

In April the patios were set up in Tallinn’s Town Hall Square. With the sunny days we had, seats were already filled with tourists and locals soaking up the sun’s rays. Cruise ship season has also begun and every day, day-trippers from Scandinavian cruises fill the streets of Tallinn’s Old Town. It’s great to see the city coming to life again!

Another sign of summer is The Baltic Guide’s sum-mer travel issue, which you will find the middle of this paper. It covers all of the must-see sights of Estonia, from eastern Estonia and Narva to western Estonia, Haapsalu, Pärnu, and the Islands. We tell you what to see and do, as well as how to get there. Not sure where to go? Why not plan your trip around one of the many festivals or concerts happening throughout Estonia. There is sure to be something for every taste and to suit every budget.

Happy travels!

Located on the narrow street Müürivahe, in Tallinn’s Old Town, Ancho has been open for just over a year now.

Tallinn’s love for Mexican food continues to grow. In the year since Ancho opened, many other Mex-ican-TexMex places have opened, but Ancho’s success can be attrib-uted to good, simple food, at a rea-sonable price.

The stuffed jalapenos are a must, especially if you like spice. The chillies are stuffed with melt-ed cheese, battered and fried, and served with sour cream.

Tacos come with a choice of crispy or soft shell. They are not filled with minced meat either; the beef taco was filled with savoury shredded beef and accompanied with cheddar cheese and guacamole. Wash it

all down with one of their Mex-ican beers.

Lunch is a great time to come to Ancho because they offer a €4 lunch special, which includes a main dish and a free coke. Check

their Facebook page for daily spe-cials. n

Do you want to organise an event for work or spend your birthday learning something new? Lootsi Keskus is located just a few hun-dred meters from the D-terminal at the Port of Tallinn and the Toi-duakadeemia (Food Academy) can be found on the third floor.

Every cooking class starts with

a welcome drink. You put on your apron and listen to the chef ’s instructions. The course lasts about four hours, and Toiduakadeemia can accommodate up to 40 people in two different rooms. Everyone can take part and learn new tips and tricks in the kitchen. The smaller room can accommodate 12 people.

Toiduakadeemia’s chef Tarvo Kullama specialises in Thai cuisi-

ne, having himself learned from a Thai chef. Toiduakadeemia offers all kinds of courses, from tradi-tional cooking to BBQ, or baking. There is a beer-snacks course in the works. All of the instructors are specialised in their respecti-ve fields.

Recipes and tutorials are desig-ned to inspire you to cook the food at home. They tell you where to

find the ingredients. And if you can’t finish all of the food you pre-pared, then it’s packed up and sent home with you. n

F-Hoone Telliskivi 60Quite possibly the daddy of all the modern Telliskivi bars (though those living in Tallinn for longer might dispute this), F-Hoone or F-Building is a for-mer factory building with two rooms, plus a breakout room that is used as a children’s play area these days.

It’s a marvellous space, and the restaurant uses it creatively. There are comfy sofas for remote working during the day, and for lounging at night, and up high by the tall windows there are sur-prisingly secluded seating areas, perfect for planning that top-secret creative project.

At night the restaurant turns, periodically, into an open-plan party venue, with the possibil-ity of using the two rooms for two very distinct experiences. I went to a party which even had two DJs playing different styles of music, and that was amazing.

Lendav Taldrik Telliskivi 60aThe restaurant known in English as Flying Saucer took its bow last year and became popular with an international crowd, including families. Like F-Hoone, Lendav Taldrik is something of a hybrid, in that the former factory space has the ability to function as a café or as a restaurant.

At night the atmosphere, lightened by the bright col-ours and pinewood, becomes mature without being po-faced. As Lendav stays open late, it’s a very effective chilling place, where you can bring friends or relations without embarrassing anyone with your choice.

Although there is an impres-sive choice of drinks, and Lendav wins credit for being one of very few affordable Indian restaurants in Tallinn, the food was, at first try, average at best. Nonethe-less, it’s surprisingly difficult to foster a friendly atmosphere in a new restaurant / bar, and Lendav certainly does that.

Kivi Paber Käärid Telliskivi 60aJust across the path from Lendav Taldrik is this smaller café/bar, recognisable by the big white let-ters painted on the outside of the grey building. Although F-Hoone and Lendav offer food which is decent but not outstanding,

Tallinn Nightlife

A Night Out iN telliskivi

I t’s important, when you visit Tallinn, to step out of the Old Town and see the exciting and lively scene just a short walk, or a shorter tram or taxi ride, from the cosy surroundings of your hotel. If you want a fun time, with the coolest people, head to the complex of former factory buildings in Tallinn’s Telliskivi

district. It’s not hard to get there, but when you do, it’s like being in a new world. Below we profile some of the places you can find.

Kivi Paber Kaarid raises the bar with some truly impressive, and healthy, options. The gluten-free cakes are also a treat.

As with all the other bars in the complex, there is a good drinks list. The bar will, at weekends, organise live music from local bands. In spite of the echo that is audible all around, KPK is an easy place to talk in. It’s quite popular, so make sure you book a table if you want to try it out, but of the places in Telliskivi where you can sit down, eat, have a drink and chill into the night, it’s probably the best, and it definitely tries the hardest to impress.

Pudel Telliskivi 60aWhen the night has progressed a little, there’s only one place you

should consider going to. Pudel has been open for more than two years, but it’s not fallen out of fashion, maybe because it was never trying to be in fashion. It just does what it does (a constant-ly-evolving list of craft beers from around the world and some well-curated quiz and comedy nights), without distracting itself with the latest fad.

The result is a bar that will welcome anyone with a bright interior and staff with a warm disposition. n

“We were a group of 42 people and we decided to visit the Estonia Concert Hall. On the way back to the hotel, we stumbled upon the Beer Garden,

a restaurant in the Old Town. They had a great selection of beers and fantastic food, but the best part was that we got to sit together at one big table!

We danced until we could dance no more! Some of us even partied until morning and did not even make it back to the hotel…”

Northern EstoniaThe northern part of Estonia, stretching from Paldiski on the north-western tip of the country to the capital, Tallinn, out to Narva on Estonia’s eastern border, is full of surprises and wonder. Because your journey into Estonia begins in Tallinn, it is easy to explore the north of the country, and travel distances are short.

In Narva, walk along the Narva River promenade. Visit the Hermann Fortress, which houses a museum and hosts many outdoor events in summer. Avinurme hosts the most famous summer event in Estonia on Midsummer’s Eve, 23 June, which includes a big bonfire and barrel market. And finally, don’t forget to try a lamprey, a delicacy of the Narva River. The annual Lamprey Festival takes place on 26 Septem-ber in Narva-Jõesuu. n

how to get there?trains leave twice daily to Jõhvi and Narva. travel time is about 2.5 hours to Narva and a ticket costs €10.90. buses leave almost half-hourly to Narva, stopping in Rakvere and Jõhvi. For a full timetable visit: www.tpilet.ee

01 NaRva-JõEsuuNarva-Jõesuu Spa, is located in one of the oldest resort-towns, Narva-Jõesuu. The town is situated on the far eastern coast of Estonia, a short drive from the historic border town of Narva. With a beach under the pine trees, and 39 different rehabilitation procedures, plus very affordable prices, it’s well worth taking a break in this secluded corner of Estonia.

02 PaldiskiA Trip into the hv vvistory of the City of Paldiski, a guided tour of the former military port, will show you the fascinating history of Paldiski and the Pakri Peninsula. Along the way, you’ll get to see Peter the Great’s fortress, a lighthouse, Paldiski Naval School, some truly enormous windmills, and the famous (and very scary) cliffs.

03 lahEmaa NatioNal PaRkTake a day-trip to Lahemaa National Park. Legendary peaceful fishing villages, huge for-ests, bogs and swamps. Stare in wonderment at Nõmmeveski waterfall, explore the quiet life in Võsu, and then head to Sagadi manor. The best thing? The trip will leave right from your hotel!

04 sillamäESillamäe Town and Maritime Days. The former Soviet industrial town, featuring some beautiful examples of post-WW2 urban architecture, between 28 and 30 June show-cases live performances from artists hailing from all over Estonia.

05 NaissaaRBook early and take a fast speedboat to the deserted island of Naissaar. A military truck will take you on a round-trip of the island. For army buffs, there is an imperial-Russian artillery battery, there are stores sea mines and a factory for them and pretty little Maarja Church. The lighthouse on the northern side of the island offers breathtaking views of the wide-open Baltic.

The majority of tourists travel to Tallinn, but Estonia is so small that you can drive across it in a matter of hours.

Drivers in Estonia need to remember two things: there is zero tolerance for drunk driving, mea-ning that your blood alcohol level must be at zero and speeding and parking tickets must be paid.

The biggest change in Tallinn this year, as far as traffic goes, is that busses from the city centre to the end stops will replace the

trams. New trams will replace the old trams throughout the year

There will also be changes to the tram lines in the future. A direct connection from the port to the airport should be completed by the end of next year.

The orange “carrot trains” have now replaced Estonia’s trains. These new trains are comfortable, tickets are relatively cheap, but unfortuna-tely there is no restaurant car. For example, a trip between Estonia’s largest cities, Tallinn and Tartu, lasts about two hours and a ticket costs about €10. You can even take your bike on the train. For more infor-mation about trains and schedules visit: www.elron.ee

A direct trip by bus costs about the same. Bus travel in Estonia is very convenient, with direct lines running regularly between Estonia’s major cities and towns. If you want to travel in style, look for tickets aboard Lux Express. On some of their busses, if you pay for a business class ticket, you can get your own single seat. For more information and schedules visit: www.tpilet.ee n

By road or by train

Before you get in a taxi:

1. Look for the fare on the back window.

2. A taxi must take the most direct route to the destination.

3. If you are unsure, travel only with well-known taxi companies.

4. If you did not receive a printed receipt, you don’t need to pay

for the ride.

Important!

Estonia's new orange trains

We have been getting a lot of feedback from our readers say-ing that they are paying more than normal for their taxis.

Tourists don’t always remem-ber, or they don’t know that in Estonia the taxi companies have the right to set their own fares. This means that some companies

can charge five times more than their competitors.

One of the easiest ways to get a taxi is to download the Taxify app on your smartphone. It searches for all nearby taxis, meaning that you can compare fares right on your phone.n

The true otherworldly magic in Estonia happens on the islands, and with more than 1500 islands in this seafaring nati-on, it’s likely that you’ll find a bit of that fairy dust at some point in your travels.

The largest islands are Saaremaa (literally ”Islandland”), Hiiumaa, Muhu and Võrmsi. But don’t forget about the tiny islands of Kihnu and Ruhnu either. It’s not fair to say that if you’ve seen one island, you’ve seen them all. Each one is, in its own way uni-que, with its own culture and traditions. n

One of estonia’s most beautiful

summer destinationsTexT Laura KoisvisTo, PhoTos eas

Estonia’s Cultural Capital Tartu is trip worth taking with the whole family. Pic-turesque Tartu offers visitors a quick vacation, as well as a romantic weekend.

A trip to Tartu won’t break the bank either, and its relatively small size means that the best way to see it is by foot. Walk along the Emajõgi River to enjoy beauti-ful flowers, or escape the city centre with a walk through Toomemägi Park.

Do you feel like getting your groove on? Tartu has no shortage of nightclubs or bars. For example, Atlantis nightclub offers a great night out for those looking for a party. Or just walk through the city centre and you’ll no doubt find a great bar for a quieter night out.

Estonia is known for its excellent desserts and Tartu is no exception. The Town Hall Square is filled with café pat-ios in summertime, where you can taste some of the best cakes. In the centre of the square you will see one of Tartu’s

well-known sights: the kissing students statue in the fountain.

History buffs should mark the weekend of July 10-12 in their calendars, as it is the start of Tartu’s Hanseatic Days. Visitors can enjoy a Hanseatic Market, as well as see many different concerts and exhibits. The medieval market sells some great food, some of which you can even bring home as a souvenir. Be sure to book your hotel early for this weekend. n

Southern EstoniaTexT KrisTina Lupp, sTuarT GarLicK, phoTos andrei cherTKov, eas

It is often said that the nicest people in Estonia come from the south. To find out if this is true, set co-ordinates due south and head for the true soul of the country. From small, friendly and independent-minded towns through to the hilliest part of a flat country, there is everything you could need to loosen up.

Valgamaa, Põlvamaa, and Võrumaa are three counties in Southern Estonia, where Estonia borders Russia and Latvia. The population of these three counties is a little under 100,000. Distances are short and there is a great deal to see!

The country’s largest trees, tallest ‘mountains’ and deepest lakes, are just some of the reasons to visit this area and its people. Here you will also hear dif-ferent dialects of the Estonian language, including that of the Seto people.

The Seto people celebrate their king on the first Saturday in August, along with some of the best folk music and beer. This year, Kingdom Day will be celebrated at Obinitsa. In Võru, the folklore festival will take place from 8-12 July, which will include dancers, singers, and musicians from all over Estonia.

Many rivers flow through this area, and in some places, around high sand cliffs that the rivers have dug out natural-ly over time. One of the most impressive is Taevaskoja on Ahja River, where at its peak, the sandy cliff reaches 20 metres. Even taller is the Härma wall beside the Piusa River in Meremäe County. n

Everyone’s skin type is different. This depends on age, lifestyle, and of course, stress levels. That’s why you need skincare that is specifi-cally targeted to your needs. At Freya Estetica, they have just the thing – Luxury Skin Care from Cosmetica Salin de Biosel. A rela-xing, yet invigorating one hour facial that will leave your skin fee-ling revitalised and balanced.

This is a facial that is custom-ised for everyone. Depending on your skin type, different vitamins and minerals will be added. The masks and creams are prepared

and mixed right before your eyes. First, your face is cleansed with cleansing milk, then exfoliated. Then relaxation truly begins with a micro massage using Oligo Yin serum, followed by the Yin Yang massage with regenerating Yang milk. After, the Dead Sea tonic is applied and the balancing mask is put on, but while you wait, you get a shoulder massage too. In fact, most of the Lux facial procedures come with two to three massages. It’s a great way to truly relax and escape for an hour.

After the facial my skin was softer and my complexion, notice-ably better. I felt relaxed, yet ener-

gised, a feeling that lasted well throughout the rest of the day.

Freya Estetica is convenient-ly located in Tallinn’s city centre, right on the edge of the Old Town. The procedure rooms are modern and comfortable. While they have a regular client base, stepping in as a first time client, you felt right at home. I was offered tea or coffee. Relaxation begins the moment you step in the door.

There are a few different ver-sions of the Luxury Skin Care: the Balancing, Cleansing Facial, the Lifting Facial, Balancing Care for Sensitive, Rosacea and Rosacea-prone Skin, as well as the Yin Balan-

cing Acne Skin Care, Osmo Limph Facial and Eye Area, Anti-Age Deli-cate Facial and Eye Contour, and Lipo Slim Yin and Yang. All of the facials and body care use a balance between the Yin and Yang ener-gies. The qualified beauticians will assess your skin type and tell you which procedure is right for you. Each procedure lasts 60 minutes. For the month of May, the Luxury Skin Care from Cosmetica Salin de Biosel facial costs only €59. n

If you love to pamper yourself at home, the Vestige Verdant Orga-nic Bioactive Anti Ageing Mask & Rare Oil Blend are certainly worth the splurge, especially if you are a fan of organic. Both products are 100% organic and Vestige Verdant is an Estonian company, meaning you can support local too.

Let’s first start with the Organ-ic Bioactive Anti Ageing Mask. The mask is deep cleansing and moisturising; in fact you can feel go to work almost immediately. As you apply the slightly thick,

black mask to your face, within a couple of minutes you can feel a light tingling sensation. That’s when you know it’s working. You leave the mask on for about ten minutes and by that point it will have dried. Once you’ve rinsed it off, your skin is noticeably fresher looking and much softer to the touch.

So what’s it made from? Eston-ian balneological peat is its base component, along with minerals, and the ash is what gives it its dark colour.

Now let’s take a look at the Rare Oil Blend. The oil can be used

daily, before applying your make-up (though you have to wait ten minutes, as the directions sug-gest). A couple of drops on your fingertips is all you need before you gently massage it onto your face, neck, and cleavage. When used daily, the oil moisturises, repairs, and rejuvenates the skin, and what’s best is that it doesn’t stay oily on your skin.

What are the rare oils that go into the rare oil blend? It contains neroli, patchouli, carrot seed, sea buckthorn, and argan oils. It has a

light scent that is not over-powering. After a week of using the Rare Oil Blend, my skin was noticeably softer and more balanced. n

Where to buyboth products are available online or from Kaubamaja, Stockmann, and i.l.u.Organic Bioactive Anti Ageing Mask 200 ml, €39.Rare Oil Blend 50 ml, €49.

Kalamaja & KopliKalamaja (Fish house) is a historic suburb filled with wooden houses and old factories. Since the 14th cen-tury, Kalamaja has served as tallinn’s main fishing port and was home to fishermen and fishmongers. When the railroad connected tallinn with St. Petersburg in 1870, many factories

opened. the colourful wooden hous-es you still see today were built in the 1920s and 1930s to house the grow-ing working population. Kalamaja has seen a revival over the last few years as artists and other bohemian types moved in for the large spaces and cheap rent. Restaurants and cafés began to open, and the area con-tinues to grow .

have you ever seen the hull of a real submarine from below? Or better still, crawled through the narrow liv-ing and working quarters of a fully refurbished sub from the 1930s? the

submarine lembit was one of two estonian submarines built in the uK in the mid 1930s. another sight is an authentic replica of the Short admiralty type 184 seaplane, a british two-seat reconnaissance, bombing, and torpedo carrying folding-wing seaplane used in the estonian War of independence in the early 1920s and later for mail service. the museum is located in the former seaplane hang-ars built during WWi by the Russian tsar. the construction is architectur-ally unique since it was the largest armoured concrete ceiling in the world at the time of construction.

Considering the size of Estonia, it’s a wonderful fact to know that over half of this small country is covered in wilderness. Estonia has beautiful forests and stunning coastlines. Nature lovers will fall in love with Estonia.

The Estonian Museum of Natu-ral History is located on Lai Street in the heart of the Old Town. In fact, many of the city’s museums can be found on Lai, like the His-tory Museum’s Great Guild Hall, the NUKU Puppet Museum, the Health Museum, and the Design Museum.

The exhibits at the Estonian Museum of Natural History span over three floors. The ground floor houses the temporary exhi-bits. Until May 31, you can learn all about owls in the Night Flyers exhibit.

The first floor covers aquatic life. The second floor looks at the

biodiversity of Estonia’s forests and meadows. Together, the museum has close to 260,000 specimens. There is a lot to learn at the Estoni-an Museum of Natural History and you can really get up close to get a good look at the animals. There is something to learn for both kids and adults. n

Tallinn’s public transport system consists of trams, buses, and trolleys. All three use the same ticketing system. In 2013, a smartcard ticketing system was introduced. If you plan on using public transport more than three times, this is your best option. Smartcards can be purchased and topped up at R-Kiosks and are transferrable. The Tallinn Card also allows you to use public transport for free. Both cards must be validated by touching them to the orange card reader. Detailed route plans are displayed at all the stops, or plan you journey ahead of time on-line at: http://soiduplaan.tallinn.ee
