Programs Learning Disabilities Program Eligibility

Q. WHAT DISTINGUISHES WESTFIELD’S LEARNING DISABILITIES PROGRAM?

A. Since 1979, the Learning Disabilities Program has had a distinguished record of success in providing free, com-prehensive academic support to students with learning disabilities and ADHD. The University offers a supportive, understanding academic setting where students with learning differences can flourish. A professional Program Advisor is assigned to each first-year student. The Program Advisors teach students to master their individual learning strengths and assist students in becoming fully independent learners. Program advisors work with students throughout their undergraduate careers at Westfield State.

Q. CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT WESTFIELD’S DISABILITY SERVICES?

A. Disability Services provides a wide array of reasonable, appropriate accommodations for students with physical, psychological, medical, or learning disabilities. Disability Services welcomes students, at any point, to register and request reasonable accommodations.

The Access Advisor works with students to determine reasonable accommo-dations and negotiate situations that arise due to a student’s disability. The Access Advisor assists students with acclimating to the university environ-ment and refers students to appropriate resources on campus.

Students are expected to provide current documentation of their disabilities from an appropriate practitioner that includes a diagnosis and history of the disability and recommends services and reasonable accommodations. The University continues to work to ensure that facilities and programs are accessible to all students.

In accordance with the mandates of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) of 1990 as amended (2008), the University is committed to providing equal educational opportunities to qualified students who have disabilities.

Q. CAN YOU DESCRIBE WESTFIELD’S TUTORING CENTER?

A. The Tutoring Center provides free academic assistance for any undergraduate student at the University who requests it. Academic skills and time management sessions are also available.

Peer tutoring is available in most areas of the university curriculum. Tutors are outstanding upper level students who excel academically and are recom-mended by faculty. Write to [email protected] or [email protected] with questions and requests.

Q. HOW DOES THE CENTER SUPPORT EDUCATION STUDENTS TAKING THE MTEL TEST?

A. The Massachusetts Tests for Educator Licensure® Communication and Literacy Skills test is required of all students planning to teach K-12 in the Massachusetts public schools. It is the first of various tests in the MTEL se-ries. Banacos Academic Center’s MTEL ComLit Preparation provides direct assistance to education majors through group workshops and individual support opportunities. The coordinator works with students on test famil-iarity, useful strategies and practice. Write to [email protected] for more information.

Q. WHAT ARE THE ADMISSION REQUIREMENTS?

A. Admission into the Learning Disabilities Program is competitive and decisions are made on an individual basis after a thorough review of all application materials. Students who wish to apply should check the appropriate box on the Westfield State University application and submit the documents mentioned below. Under Massachusetts state law, SAT scores are waived for students with documented learning disabilities. Instead, applicants should submit results of a complete psycho-educational assessment conducted within the past three years. Preferred tests include the WAIS (cognitive tests) in conjunction with any achievement battery used by the student’s school system. Results of the complete Woodcock-Johnson Psycho-Educational Battery (including both cognitive and achievement tests) also provide acceptable documentation. We strongly encourage submission of the most recent IEP or 504 plan. The Massachusetts Board of Higher Education allows students with language-based disabilities to substitute two college preparatory units in humanities or social sciences for the foreign language requirement. Applicants who submit a reflective personal statement and academic recommendations from two subject area teachers will receive preferen-tial review. Academic record, strength of schedule and academic unit requirements are also considered for admission of students with learning disabilities. Students who are being considered for admission will be invited to meet with Banacos Center staff for interviews. Priority deadline for applications is February 1
