The following new banknotes and varieties have been reported (and also confirmed in almost all cases), but are either not listed or illustrated in Krauses Standard Catalog of World Paper Money, Volume III: Modern Issues (14th edition). As such, The Banknote Update serves as an independent addendum to the catalog. Because I am in no way affiliated with Krause or the production of the SCWPM, there is no guarantee that the next edition of the catalog will include these notes. To stay abreast of new issues, visit www.banknotenews.com.

Each issue is listed in ascending order by denomination and includes face value in US dollars, printed date, actual date of issue, and other available details. More information often can be found by visiting the web site of the issuing authority.

Face values were obtained at the time of original reporting from the currency calculator at Bloomberg.com and are rounded to the nearest five cents. Keep in mind that exchange rates fluctuate daily, so these values are approximations only and reflect official rates, not black-market prices, which may be substantially different.

As a rule of thumb, you can figure that most modern uncirculated notes sell for approximately double face value. Less expensive notes are typically marked up by a higher percentage, and more expensive notes carry smaller premiums.

All of the information and images in this document are the result of painstaking research and a considerable investment in time and energy. These contents are copyrighted and may not be reproduced without permission.

The Banknote Update is a work in progress. The information in this document is presumed accurate as of May 8, 2009. Corrections will be made if errors are brought to my attention. Furthermore, collectors and dealers are encouraged to submit information (along with 300-dpi color scans of front and back at 100%) about new issues and varieties. I promise you that any verifiable new information contributed will appear in the next edition. Furthermore, please share your suggestions for how to improve The Banknote Update.

Thank you for your support. May you continue to enjoy this great hobby of ours!

Furthermore, he revealed that the 1- and 5-manat notes dated 2005 and issued on January 1, 2006, would be replaced by coins. The new 200-manat note is not expected until 2009 at the earliest.

On March 25, 2009, the Central Bank of Barbados announced it will introduce a new 100-dollar note (US$50) with upgraded security features on April 20, 2009. With the introduction of this $100 note we are completing the upgrades process that we began in 2007, explained Julia Weekes, director of banking, currency and investments at the CBB. These features are intended to make the note more secure and are similar to those currently found in the $20 and $50 notes, she said.

Upgraded security features are: A small watermark-type image of the Pride of Barbados flower has been added to the right of the map of Barbados watermark.

The windowed security thread is now wider and less reflective than the previous thread, and is demetalized CBB$100. Under UV light, the thread fluoresces blue and the text fluoresces yellow.

The $100 numeral on the top left corner of the note is significantly raised above the surface of the paper, giving the paper a unique feel. This raised numeral will also allow the

denomination to be more easily identified by the visually impaired.

The coat of arms and the waves near the flying fish in the centre of the banknote fluoresce green and yellow under UV light.

In addition to the changes, several of the existing security features, including the highly reflective gold foil dolphin, can still be found on the upgraded $100 note.

Weekes revealed that the upgraded note will be in simultaneous circulation with older issues of the $100 note. Both the new note and those we have issued previously will be legal tender and completely acceptable as payment for goods and services, she stated.

On February 20, 2009, the Bermuda Monetary Authority (BMA) celebrated 40 years of service, and the island of Bermuda celebrated the 400th anniversary of its settlement by British explorer Sir George Somers. The BMA marked these landmark occasions by launching the first complete redesign of Bermudas banknotes since the Bermuda dollar was issued in 1969. Planning for this launch commenced in 2005, and the BMA received the permission and support of the minister of finance and the cabinet for this new design in the summer of 2007. The objectives of the launch are to update the design of the Bermuda note family, the basic design of which has been in place since 1969; to provide a distinct Bermuda design, and clearly distinguish the note family from the designs of other countries; to provide a sense of national pride and easy identification with the features by the Bermudian public; to combat counterfeiting by increasing the security features; and to issue notes that are durable in the islands tropical climate. The new banknotes were unveiled on November 24, 2008, and were introduced on March 9, 2009. Subject to the minister of finances approval, the BMA is also planning to issue commemorative note and coin products celebrating the 400th anniversary of Bermudas settlement.

Shortly after the unveiling of the new note designs, ornithologist David Wingate complained that the $50 features a red-billed tropicbird instead of a local white-tailed tropicbird. IBNS member Thomas Augustsson reported 50-, 100-, 150-, and 200-dinara uniface notes all dated 11.03.1993 with handstamps and overprints on Yugoslavia National Bank (Narodna Banka Jugoslavije) currency cheques. He has heard that these were used by the Bosnian Armed forces in the Tulza region.

Thomas Augustsson also reported the following notes and believes the values to be about the same as for the already listed handstamped Yugoslav notes BiH 1 and 2. He says, It is very scarce to ever find any excellent grades as even XF.

100 dinara, 1990 (1992). Like Yugoslavia P105, but with blue Tuzla branch 27-mm handstamp.

500 dinara, 1990 (1992). Like Yugoslavia P109, but with blue Tuzla branch 27-mm handstamp.

1,000 dinara, 1990 (1992). Like Yugoslavia P110, but with blue Tuzla branch 27-mm handstamp.

500,000 dinara, 24.08.93. Like BiH P14, but with black Donji Vakuf branch stamp and short red zeros added to denomination. Also exists dated 15.10.93 with Zenica stamp.

500,000 dinara, 24.12.93. Like BiH P14, but with purple Travnik branch stamp Zenica and tall red zeros added to denomination.

1,000,000 dinara, 1989 (1992). Like Yugoslavia P99, but with blue Tuzla branch 27-mm handstamp. The Yugoslav 1,000,000-dinara note dated 1989 (P99) is exactly the same as the 100-dinara note dated 1990 (P105), except for the denomination, since the currency reform in 1990 lopped off four zeros, meaning the above note had the same face value as the new 100-dinara note.

According to a press release dated March 31, 2008, The Eastern Caribbean Central Bank is advising the public that upgraded EC notes of all denominations will be put into circulation from 1 April 2008. The upgraded notes do not bear the barcodes or country codes which form part of the serial number on current notes. Additionally, the fish in the area where the barcodes were, are made more prominent by intaglio ink and the serial numbers on the upgraded notes have two alpha characters instead of one as on previous issues of EC notes. All other existing security features remain unchanged: These are the see-through feature, security threads, watermark of Queen Elizabeth II, electrotype which reads ECCB, intaglio over foil which shows the denomination, silver metallic fluorescence and the iridescent print. The current notes in circulation will continue to be legal tender, and will be replaced in the normal way, through wear and tear, over time.

According to an Addis Fortune article dated July 14, 2008, the National Bank of Ethiopia (NBE) has awarded Gieseck & Deverient and De La Rue multi-million dollars contracts to print various notes of the Ethiopian birr totalling a little over 1.1 billion birr. The printing of 10-, 50-, and 100-birr notes will be done by G&D, at a cost of close to 50 million dollars. The remaining denominations of one and five birr were awarded to De La Rue, which is to be paid over 16 million dollars. DLR had been the banks favored printer until the arrival of Dubale Jale as governor in 1995. G&D took the job up until 2004, at which time Francois-Charles Oberthur Fiduciarie (FCOF) won a contract to print four billion worth of birr notes.

Dr. Walter Schlebusch, director of Giesecke & Devrient, claims the new GEL 200 is one of the most secure banknotes in the world. Several exclusive technological novelties are used in the banknote. According to Report (1/2007), G&D has equipped the notes worth about 90 euros with a number of security features: PEAK, FITmedal and LOOK. PEAK (Printed and Embossed Anticopy Key) is a combination of printing and embossing techniques: the three-dimensional design and the ultra-fine structures, which lend themselves well to detection by touch, are a difficult hurdle for forgers to surmount. FITmedal (Fine Intaglio Technology) is a top-quality, steel-engraved security feature in the form of a three-dimensional medal. This cannot be copied, but is easily detectable with the naked eye. LOOK (Laser Originated Optical Key) shows laser-induced effects in the substrate, print color, foil, and varnish. This is the first time that [LOOK] has been used on a banknote that is in daily circulation.

In Abkhazia, this note is regarded as a provocation against the autonomous republic because the back depicts the Abkhaz capital, Sukhumi. Furthermore, the portrait is an affront to Russia since Cholokashvili was a famous Georgian partisan fighter against the USSR Red Army during the 1920s.

Although Treasury Minister Lyndon Trott says the move will not affect the validity of existing banknotes signed by the treasurer, its likely that revised notes will be issued with the new title once existing supplies are exhausted. Indonesia (www.bi.go.id)

According to an article in The Jakarta Post dated March 3, 2008, Bank Indonesia (BI) is set to issue a 2,000-rupiah banknote (US$0.22) and 1,000-rupiah coin in the second semester of this year. BI has decided to issue a new banknote and coin after considering peoples needs, as well as costs for making banknotes, said BI Deputy Governor Budi Rochadi. The 2,000-rupiah note will be the countrys smallest denomination note once the existing 1,000-rupiah note (Pick 141) is replaced by a coin. The new banknote and coin will employ braille making them more convenient for blind people. BI is preparing new designs and security systems to discourage counterfeiters. The last time BI issued revised banknotes was in 2005, when it released new 50,000- and 100,000-rupiah notes (Pick 144).

According to a TempoInteractive article dated September 18, 2008, BI has postponed the printing of 2,000-rupiah notes and

delayed plans to drop the 1,000-rupiah note for a coin. BI had planned to print 600,000 of the new 2,000-rupiah notes in July 2008, but now expects to wait until the end of 2008. It is not easy to get this kind of paper, explained Deputy Governor Budi Rohadi.

According to a TempoInteractive article dated December 19, 2008, Bank Indonesia (BI) has yet again postponed the printing of 2,000-rupiah notes. Junino Jahja, executive-director of Perum Peruri, the state-owned banknote printing company, said his office will print 2,000-rupiah notes in 2009, for issuance by BI in 2009. We are still waiting for Bank Indonesias decision on when to print the banknotes, including the design and everything, said Junino, who also indicated that BI now plans to issue 1,000-rupiah notes, apparently reversing plans to replace that denomination with a coin.
