THE BAPTISM OF THE LORD

Surprising, on this last day of the Christmas season, the Gospel does not tell a story from Jesus' childhood. Instead, it reveals Jesus' relationship to God: the Son of Mary and Joseph is also God's own son. We believe that through Baptism we are also made children of God.

In today's Gospel we hear John the Baptist say that he has baptized with water, but that the one who is to come will baptize with the Holy Spirit. John's baptism was not yet a Christian baptism, but was a preparation for the Christian Baptism we celebrate today, and through which sins are forgiven and the gift of the Holy Spirit is received. In accepting John's baptism, Jesus, though sinless, united himself with all sinners.

The baptism of Jesus is considered an important manifestation of God in the person of Jesus, another epiphany. Jesus' baptism begins his mission, just as our baptism begins our mission as Christians. Let us continue the mission we have been commissioned to do.

EL BAUTISMO DEL SEÑOR

Sorprendentemente, en este último día de la temporada navideña el Evangelio no cuenta una historia de la infancia de Jesús, sino que revela la relación de Jesús con Dios: el Hijo de María y José es también el Hijo de Dios. Creemos que a través del Bautismo también somos hechos hijos de Dios.

En el Evangelio de hoy escuchamos a Juan el Bautista decir que ha bautizado con agua, pero que el que ha de venir bautizará con el Espíritu Santo. El bautismo de Juan aún no fue un bautismo cristiano, sino que fue una preparación para el bautismo cristiano que celebramos hoy, y a través del cual se perdonan los pecados y se recibe el don del Espíritu Santo. Al aceptar el bautismo de Juan, Jesús, aunque sin pecado, se unió a todos los pecadores.

El bautismo de Jesús se considera una manifestación

importante de Dios en la persona de Jesús, otra

epifanía. El bautismo de Jesús comienza su misión, así

como nuestro bautismo comienza nuestra misión como

cristianos. Continuemos con la misión que se nos ha

I believe in one God, the Father almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all things visible and invisible. I believe in one Lord Jesus Christ, the Only Begotten Son of God, born of the Father before all ages. God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, consubstantial with the Father; through him all things were made. For us men and for our salvation he came down from heaven, (bow) and by the Holy Spirit was incarnate of the Virgin Mary, and became man. As we celebrate the Baptism of the Lord this weekend, it seemed like a fitting time to bring back holy water in the large baptismal font at St. Henrys (but not in the small fonts or at St. Mary’s). The reasons for this decision are as follows, the CDC has suggested that there is a minimal risk of COVID being spread through touching surfaces. Because the holy water in the large font: 1. Circulates 2. Contains a large amount of water 3. Is optional I feel it is a small risk that I am willing to take for our parish. Furthermore, what better time to bring back this beautiful reminder of our own baptism into the life of Christ and our need for Christ's presence than now as we begin a new year!? Mientras celebramos el Bautismo del Señor ese fin de semana, parece ser un momento propicio para volver a poner agua bendita en la fuente bautismal de San Henry (pero no en las fuentes pequeñas en Santa María). Las razones por esta decisión son: el CDC ha sugerido que es mínimo el riesgo de contraer el COVID a través de superficies. Ya que el agua bendita en la fuente

grande circula continuamente, es una gran cantidad de agua y su uso es opcional, siento que es un riesgo pequeño que estoy dispuesto a correr por nuestra parroquia. Además, ¿qué mejor momento para reiniciar este hermoso recordatorio de nuestro propio bautismo en la vida de Cristo y nuestra necesidad de la presencia de cristo que ahora cuando comenzamos un nuevo año? YOUTH GROUP REACHES OUT TO THOSE IN JAIL

On our Christmas youth night, each teen wrote Christmas greetings to those

serving time in an area jail. St. Francis of Assisi received this letter in return:

6:00 pm– 7:30 pm at the St. Henry campus/youth room. They are doing incredible good and forming a great community of young, vibrant Catholics!
