What does Jesus’ baptism say to us? Jesus’ thirty years of preparation before his public baptism reminds us that it takes time to get ready for God’s mission. How many countless hours did Jesus spend in prayer? What study, what thought, what agony must he have undergone before appearing in front of John to ask him to baptise him. It is never too late for any of us to say, “yes” to God. January is a time for new beginnings and fresh resolution. John the Baptist was an expert on this. John’s ministry was all about repentance and life changing reform ……. that’s what his baptism was all about. But anyone who has ever seriously tried to change themselves will know how difficult change really is. The addict will tell you how difficult it is to quit gambling, drinking or cigarettes. All of us can point to parts of our life that remain stubbornly unchanged year in and year out. Those who were baptised by John were baptised as a sign of their intent to change from their old ways, but knowing how difficult change can be, we can’t help wondering how successful they must have been. Perhaps John appreciated this too when he said “I have baptised you with water, but he will baptise you with the Holy Spirit.” We are told that the same Holy Spirit that empowered Jesus at the outset of his ministry, is the same Holy Spirit that is given to us in our baptism. This is an inspiring thought. Validating our baptism anew every day, knowing that we are filled with the Holy Spirit perhaps change really isn’t beyond us.

after Separation / Divorce: Course
beginning 16th February, 23rd Feb.,
2nd March and 9th March in Portlaoise
Parish Centre. The course will be held
one evening each week for a four
week period as above. Each session
starts at 7pm and finishes at 9:30pm
with a short break. The course aims
to help people pick up the pieces
following a break-up by giving them
information on separation and divorce
from an emotional perspective, with a
view to helping them re-build their
lives. The objectives of the course are
as follows: 1. Establishing in a
non-threatening way, what stage they
are at in the grieving process.
2. Understanding the emotions of
loss and separation - denial, anger,
bargaining, letting go and acceptance.
3. Moving on and re-building -
identifying what has relevance for
you. Course costs €75. To reserve

We can sometimes frown at young people and their fascination with new media. We complain that today's youth are permanently 'plugged in' to Face book or their mobile phones, but their keen understanding of the new communications media can be a distinct advantage. The new communications media, if adequately understood and exploited, can offer today's youth a wealth of data which was difficult to access before, and facilitate forms of collaboration and increased communion that were previously unthinkable. This month we are invited to join Pope Benedict's prayer intention " ..that young people may learn to use modern means of social communication for their personal growth and to better prepare themselves to serve society.”
