DECEMBER 2017 Vol. XXXII No. 12 The Barnard Bulletin MEMORY TREE, HOLIDAY PARTY, AND CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE CONTINUE EAST BARNARD TRADITIONS by Virginia Glass Schlabach Although Thanksgiving is still to come as I write this, the snow falling outside and the list of upcoming December events in East Barnard are signs that the Christmas holidays are not far away. Thus I’ll begin with a list of activities and dates and then follow with more details. The month begins with the Community Club’s annual meeting on Sunday, the 3rd. Next comes the annual Memory Tree lighting ceremony on Wednesday, the 13th, followed by the Com- munity Club-sponsored holiday party on Saturday, the 16th. The season culminates, as always, with the Christmas Eve service at the church on the 24th. And now for the details: Community Club Annual Meeting: The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Dan and Jill Leavitt’s house, 117 Walker Hill Road. Among the agenda items are election of officers and consideration of new rental policies for use of the Community Hall. As only members may vote, outstanding 2017 dues of $5.00 per member will be collected before the meeting begins. New members are always welcome! Fifth Annual East Barnard Memory Tree: Once again John Leavitt and Marilyn Syme invite the community to remem- ber deceased friends, relatives, and pets with a memory ball. Come to the East Barnard Community Hall for the lighting ceremony at 7:00 p.m. on the 13th of December and help hang the ornaments on the tree as the names are read. The Memory Tree is not only a lovely way to honor loved ones but the income from the balls helps the Community Club with local projects. Marilyn will write each name on a Christmas ball. The charge is $5.00 per name; please make checks out to East Barnard Community Club. Send names and checks or cash to Marilyn Syme, 42 Leonard Road, So. Royalton, Vt. 05068 or to John Leavitt, 3619 Allen Hill Road, So. Royalton, Vt. 05068. Community Holiday Party: This party is a wonderful way to celebrate community. Hosts Jill and Dan Leavitt invite everyone to come to their house at 5:00 p.m. on December 16.. The potluck supper will begin at 5:30 and the always- popular Yankee swap will follow. Come bearing some festive food to share and gifts to gladden (or not) the hearts of whoever ends up with what you’ve brought. Christmas Eve Service: The East Barnard Church Christ- mas service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on December 24. Singers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the Christmas Eve choir. If you would like to join us or have any questions, please contact Amber Leavitt at [email protected] or (847) 917-0339. Dates and times for rehearsals are still to be decided. Now I will backtrack to October to share this report from the Broad Brook Fire Association: The 61st annual East Barnard Oyster Stew Supper was held on October 21. 155 people came out to enjoy good food, see old friends and meet new ones. Diners enjoyed oyster stew, baked beans, cole slaw, rolls, and homemade pies. Thanks to all the volunteers who made the supper possible. Mark your calendars for the 62nd annual Oyster Stew Supper to be held on October 20, 2018. I’ll end with pictures of the November 9 presentation at the Thompson Senior Center of a Quilt of Valor to Floyd VanAlstyne in honor of his service in World War II. The quilt - displayed by Rod and Mary Croft - was made by Delectable Mountain Quilters, which includes eight mem- bers from East Barnard and five from Barnard. The pre- senter pictured is Fred Stebbins, Department of Vermont, American Legion Quilt of Valor Coordinator. MEMORY TREE, HOLIDAY PARTY, AND CHRISTMAS EVE SERVICE CONTINUE

EAST BARNARD TRADITIONSby Virginia Glass Schlabach

Although Thanksgiving is still to come as I write this, the snow falling outside and the list of upcoming December events in East Barnard are signs that the Christmas holidays are not far away. Thus I’ll begin with a list of activities and dates and then follow with more details. The month begins with the Community Club’s annual meeting on Sunday, the 3rd. Next comes the annual Memory Tree lighting ceremony on Wednesday, the 13th, followed by the Com-munity Club-sponsored holiday party on Saturday, the 16th. The season culminates, as always, with the Christmas Eve service at the church on the 24th. And now for the details:

Community Club Annual Meeting: The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. at Dan and Jill Leavitt’s house, 117 Walker Hill Road. Among the agenda items are election of officers and consideration of new rental policies for use of the Community Hall. As only members may vote, outstanding 2017 dues of $5.00 per member will be collected before the meeting begins. New members are always welcome!

Fifth Annual East Barnard Memory Tree: Once again John Leavitt and Marilyn Syme invite the community to remem-ber deceased friends, relatives, and pets with a memory ball.

The potluck supper will begin at 5:30 and the always-popular Yankee swap will follow. Come bearing some festive food to share and gifts to gladden (or not) the hearts of whoever ends up with what you’ve brought.

Christmas Eve Service: The East Barnard Church Christ-mas service will be held at 5:30 p.m. on December 24. Singers of all ages and abilities are invited to participate in the Christmas Eve choir. If you would like to join us

or have any questions, please contact Amber Leavitt at [email protected] or (847) 917-0339.

NEWS FROM HELPING HANDSWhat a lovely extended fall we have had! It has given us extra time to finish fall projects and just enjoy being outside. Winter now seems to be settling in, and snow is in the forecast. This should make tracking easier for the hunters among us.

Helping Hands will be giving Shaw’s gift cards to some of our neighbors who could use a little help purchasing food for their Thanksgiving meal. At Christmas time, we will be distributing festive holiday food baskets with an-other Shaw’s card tucked into the basket. If you know of someone who you think could use a Shaw’s card, please e-mail or call one of us.

Our Secret Santa tree will appear at the Barnard General Store Thanksgiving weekend. There will be ornaments filled with the holiday wishes of a number of Barnard children. If you would like to be a Secret Santa and bring holiday joy to a child, please stop by the BGS and choose an ornament. Please bring the wrapped presents back to the BGS by Tuesday, December 19th, so that we can deliver them on the 21st. Thank for your help!

Thanksgiving is right around the corner and Christmas will be here before we know it. It is the time that many non-profits send out letters asking for donations. Ours went in the mail last week. If you didn’t receive one, and would like one, please e-mail or call one of us.

Here is another way you could help us. If you are an Ama-zon shopper, we encourage you to sign-up for Amazon Smile, which is a website operated by Amazon, that lets you enjoy the same wide selection of products, low prices and convenient shopping features as Amazon.com. The difference is that when you shop on AmazonSmile (smile.amazon.com), the Amazon Foundation will donate 0.5% of the purchase price to the eligible charity of your choice. On your first visit to AmazonSmile you will need to select the charity you wish to receive a donation from eligible purchases before you begin shopping. They will remember your selection, and then every eligible purchase you make will result in a donation. The only thing you have to remem-

ber is to choose AmazonSmile, rather than Amazon, each time you shop. We hope you will choose Barnard Helping Hands as your charity to support. Support us when you shop for holiday gifts. #StartWithaSmile at http://smile.amazon.com/ch/43-2089159 and Amazon donates.

Food insecurity continues to be a problem in Vermont and is especially hard at holiday time. Our local food shelves are still serving a record number of individuals and families. Please help us keep our food shelf collection box at the BGS filled to overflowing. There are many in our com-munity who depend on both the Woodstock and Bethel Food Shelves to supplement their food needs. Here is a list of items that are always needed: pasta and pasta sauce, hot and cold cereal, canned tuna, canned soups and stews, canned and packaged meals, peanut butter, jam and jelly, coffee and tea, mayo and ketchup and personal care items such as shampoo, toothpaste and toilet paper. Thank you for supporting the food shelves!

Please don’t hesitate to contact us if you or someone you know could use a helping hand. We have people ready and willing to help. If the job is too big for us to handle, we can refer you to other available resources.

LOCAL CRYPTOGRAMA cryptogram is a code in which one letter is substituted for another. For example, the word “Church” could be written BWMSBW. The letter B would be the letter C and would be throughout the entire message. In this message P = L. The solution is found by trial and error.

AUDITIONS!BarnArts is proud to be presenting our winter community theater production of Neil Simon’s Brighton Beach Mem-oirs in ArtisTree’s new Grange Theatre.

The play includes a mixed-age cast with adults and teens.

Brighton Beach Memoirs is Neil Simon’s “funniest, richest and consequently the most affecting of his plays.” - New York Daily News

Dreaming of baseball and girls, Eugene must cope with the mundane existence of his 1937 family life in Brooklyn: formidable mother, overworked father, and his worldly older brother Stanley. Throw into the mix his widowed Aunt Blanche and her two young (but rapidly maturing) daughters and you have a recipe for Simon-style hilarity, gently embedded in a moving pre-WW2 tale.
