Historical Note

Albert C. (Coombs) Barnes (1872 – 1951) was a chemist, entrepreneur, and educator whose earlyfinancial success provided him with the means to form a world class art collection and to establishthe Barnes Foundation, a non-profit institution dedicated to art education. Albert C. Barnes attendedPhiladelphia’s Central High School and received his medical degree at the University of Pennsylvania in1892. He went on to study physiological chemistry at the University of Berlin and pharmacology at theRuprecht-Karls-Universitat in Heidelberg. While in Heidelberg, he recruited German chemist HermannHille to work for H. K. Mulford and Company, for whom Barnes had worked as an advertising andsales manager since 1895. Barnes and Hille worked together on their own time to develop a silver-basedantiseptic called Argyrol, and in May 1902 they both left H.K. Mulford and Company to form their ownpartnership.

Established as a pharmaceutical company located at 24 North 40th Street in Philadelphia, the partnershipof Barnes and Hille was successful almost immediately, with net profits rising from $4,747.46 in 1903to $152,772.76 in 1906. This was due in large part to Barnes’s strategy of advertising directly to doctorsand soliciting their endorsements. “It is just such doctors who proved to be our most valuable advertisingcapital because they write a lot and they talk a lot, and what they say reaches not only other specialistsbut a great many general practitioners who accept their statements as authoritative,” Barnes wrote. Thedoctors proved receptive to Argyrol and to Barnes and Hille’s new product, an iron salt called Ovoferrin.In order to keep the formulas to Argyrol and Ovoferrin secret, Barnes trademarked the product names butdid not patent the product’s formulas, and he would later zealously pursue and prosecute counterfeitersselling similar products under his trademarked names.

Despite their success, the partnership was troubled. In late 1903 Barnes expressed his wish to dissolvethe partnership on suspicion that Hille was revealing firm secrets and selling its raw materials. Theirdifferences were resolved on that occasion, but by early 1907 civility had become impossible and onMay 31, 1907 Barnes filed a bill in equity requesting that the firm be dissolved. His petition granted,he bought Hille’s half of the company, including all the rights to the formulas, and in 1908 establishedthe A.C. Barnes Company at the same address. This business was also quite successful. Barnes sold theA.C. Barnes Company to the Zonite Products Corporation on July 19, 1929. Showing his characteristicconcern for the welfare of his employees, Barnes brought many of them to work with him at the BarnesFoundation. Barnes and bookkeeper Nelle E. Mullen continued to administer the pension fund for formeremployees of the A.C. Barnes Company as trustees.

In 1922 Barnes’s lifelong interest in aesthetics led him to endow the Barnes Foundation, a non-profiteducational institution. The Foundation offers courses in art appreciation and horticulture, published ajournal and a series of books, and offered scholarships for overseas study to worthy students, in additionto acquiring artworks. The Foundation, with a gallery and a home for Dr. and Mrs. Barnes, was built in asurrounding arboretum at 300 North Latch’s Lane in Merion. The Foundation also maintained offices at4525 Spruce St. in Philadelphia, and later at 4103 Haywood Road in Merion. These offices, and indeedthe tax-free status of the Foundation as a whole, were the subject of spirited disputes between Dr. Barnes,

the Internal Revenue Service, and the Receiver of Taxes for the City of Philadelphia, reflected in thesurviving tax records.

In 1940 Dr. Barnes purchased an eighteenth-century farmhouse in Chester County, Pennsylvania, whichhe christened Ker-Feal. The farmhouse housed Barnes’s collection of American decorative art and wasintended to serve as part of the Foundation’s educational program. Ker-Feal boasted impressive plantingsunder the direction of Laura L. Barnes, Dr. Barnes’s wife, who also served as director of the BarnesFoundation Arboretum. During the Second World War, Barnes used the farm at Ker-Feal to grow cropsthat were donated to the war effort. Barnes also sent care packages abroad to Leo Stein and other friendsdevastated by the war in Europe, and purchased war bonds for his employees.

Although some viewed Barnes as cantankerous, he was exceptionally generous to his friends, employees,and family. He purchased cars and homes outright for his employees, covered their medical expenses,paid for their travel in Europe, and provided them with lifelong pensions. After his mother’s death in1912, Barnes held her estate in trust for his father, John J. Barnes, and his brother, Charles W. Barnes.He undertook many of his family’s other expenses, as well. His personal financial records bear witnessto these and a host of other small generosities, some of which strike a modern eye as incongruous andamusing. In 1943, Barnes not only paid his friend John Dewey’s hospital bills, he also ordered his favoriteimporter to send Dewey a bottle of Smith Glenlivet, deliverable to Dewey’s room in New York Hospital.Barnes cared not only for the physical health of his associates, but also for their mental well-being. Thefinancial records document, in very specific form, Barnes’s extraordinary achievements in the worlds ofbusiness and education, and also capture his complex personality, revealed in the details of his getting andspending.

Scope and Content

The Barnes Foundation financial records include Albert C. Barnes’s personal financial records as wellas the records of his two businesses, Barnes and Hille and the A.C. Barnes Company, and the financialrecords of non-profit educational institution the Barnes Foundation, which Barnes endowed in 1922. Therecords date from 1902 – 1972, with the bulk of the records pertaining to the Barnes Foundation and dated1922 – 1951.

This collection includes account books; balance statements; bank records such as checkbooks, cancelledchecks, bank statements, and deposit records; cash account books; petty cash slips; employee records;records of investments; invoices and receipts; and tax records. Dr. Barnes’s personal financial recordsinclude details of the estate of his mother, Lydia A. Barnes. Records for Barnes and Hille and the A.C.Barnes Company are sparse and incomplete. The Barnes and Hille financial records include legal records,including extensive documentation of the partnership’s dissolution, and marketing records. The A.C.Barnes Company records include a few pieces of correspondence, legal records, and pension fundrecords. The majority of the records of the A.C. Barnes Company were transferred to the Zonite ProductsCorporation in 1929, as part of the sale of the company, and are no longer extant.

These records document Barnes’s business dealings, his collecting, and aspects of his private life. Therecords of Barnes and Hille, the A.C. Barnes Company, and the Barnes Foundation include employmentrecords listing staff members. The records of Barnes and Hille and the A.C. Barnes Company, althoughincomplete, provide evidence of Barnes’s often innovative business methods and the means by which hebuilt his fortune and financed his interest in art and education. Cancelled checks, checkbooks, purchaserecords, and customs invoices provide provenance for many of the artworks Dr. Barnes acquired between1912 and 1951. Information about the framing, conservation, repair, and maintenance of some paintingsand antiques can be found in invoices, receipts, and checkbooks. Expenses related to the constructionof and repairs to Barnes Foundation buildings are also found in these records. Various facets of Dr.Barnes’s personal life, including information about family, pets, food and drink, travel arrangements, andhealthcare issues, are revealed in his personal financial papers.

Scope and Content Note

This series includes bank records; records of investments; records relating to the estate of Dr. Barnes’s

mother, Lydia A. Barnes; invoices and receipts; and tax records. Bank records include checkbooks

whose annotated check stubs serve as a ledger recording daily expenses. Investment records include a

ledger documenting Barnes’s real estate development projects along Latch’s Lane, 1912-1917, as well

as a Chester County properties ledger recording expenses at Barnes’s farmhouse, Ker-Feal, and showing

that Barnes paid for crops grown at neighboring farms and contributed the harvest to the war effort in

the early 1940s. Papers relating to the estate of Dr. Barnes’s mother, Lydia A. Barnes, who died in 1912,

deal chiefly with the management of the house at 1331 Tasker St., which she owned. Albert C. Barnes

held the house in trust for his father, John J. Barnes, and his brother, Charles W. Barnes, until 1922 when

the property was sold. Invoices and receipts are a rich source of information about Barnes’s everyday

life, recording such details as his preferred brand of cigarettes, his membership in various clubs, and

his tastes in clothes and reading material. Invoices also include expenses that Barnes assumed on behalf

of his family and his employees. Records of expenses are mainly handwritten lists of mundane daily

expenses, but also include purchase records for various antiques and fine crafts. The records of expenses,

along with invoices, checkbooks, and cancelled checks, document Barnes’s career as a collector.

Records of expenses also include a subject file concerning Dr. Barnes’s medical expenses, which

contains hospital invoices, medical records, pharmacy scripts, and other related items. This subject

file, while rather anomalous, was found as-is and has been preserved in its original order. Tax records

detail personal, business, and investment income and also include filing information for his personal

household staff. Please see Presidents’ Files, Albert C. Barnes Correspondence, for more information on

tax records. Dr. Barnes occasionally disputed his taxes and the voluminous correspondence generated

with lawyers and government agents, along with the tax returns themselves, can sometimes be found in

his correspondence.

Arrangement

This subseries is arranged chronologically, and then alphabetically by folder title. The majority of the

invoices and receipts in this sub-series have been arranged in general letter files. Constituents have

generally been filed in direct order, unless they had previous personal correspondence with Dr. Barnes

or were personally known to him, in which case they have been filed in inverted order, following the

precedent of their correspondence. If the invoices and receipts deal with a subject that is of particular

interest to the institution, they have been given their own folder, filed under the individual constituent

name. Subjects deemed of sufficient interest to warrant this treatment include: the purchase, shipping, or

conservation of artwork, frames, and fine crafts; items Barnes sold; photography of Barnes’s collection;

the interior décor of the Barnes’ homes; the purchase of books and phonograph records, which illuminate

influences on Barnes’s aesthetic theories; Dr. Barnes’s travel expenses; his membership in various clubs;

and medical expenses, whether for Barnes or others.

used for marketing purposes, invoices, receipts, and records of expenses for the partnership Barnes and

Hille, which was formed in 1902 and ended in 1908. Account books and financial statements show the

quick growth and increasing profitability of the company, while legal records document the equally

quick decline in the partners’ relationship. Legal records include a brief history of the partnership written

by Barnes, correspondence, financial records, advertising materials, records of experiments, photos,

Barnes’s description of Hille’s character, and copies of the bill in equity case that led to the partnership’s

dissolution in 1908. Records for this company are sparse and incomplete.

This series contains correspondence, legal records, clippings, pension fund records, and invoices and

receipts. Most of the records for this company were transferred to the Zonite Products Corporation when

they purchased the A.C. Barnes Company in 1929. The one exception was the pension fund records,

as Albert C. Barnes and Nelle E. Mullen continued to administer the A.C. Barnes Company pension

fund for the company’s original employees long after the company’s sale. Pension fund records include

checkbooks whose annotated check stubs serve as a ledger recording expenses, cancelled checks and

bank statements, deposit books, copies of the original fund indenture, and tax returns. Folders labeled

“pension fund records” with no further characterization preserve the original folder title and original

order. They include records of bond purchases, legal opinions on bonds, tax withholding forms, records

of payments made to employees, receipts, and pension fund deposit and withdrawal slips.

This series includes balance statements; bank records; cash account records; employment records;

records of investments; journals and ledgers; records of sales of the Foundation’s publications; invoices

and receipts; records of expenses; and tax records. Bank records include checkbooks whose annotated

check stubs serve as a ledger recording daily expenses. Cancelled checks, bank statements, and deposit

books and slips may also be found in the bank records subseries. While these records are not fully

complete, they nonetheless offer a detailed look at the Foundation’s activities. Checks and check

stubs provide provenance for the purchase of artworks and fine crafts, document the Foundation’s

educational work in the form of works published and scholarships for study, and record payments for

the construction, repair, and maintenance of Foundation buildings, amongst many other things. Cash

account records, along with the journals and ledgers, are dense with information on all aspects of the

Foundation’s financial life, although entries vary greatly in their degree of comprehensiveness. While

most records in this collection extend only through 1951, the year of Dr. Barnes’s death, or 1952,

when many accounts were closed, cash account journals have been processed through 1972. Cash

accounts from 1951-1962 and 1969-1972 were physically bound together in the same journal, and so

it was deemed best to preserve original order and include them here all together. Cash accounts also

include petty cash slips that itemize notable purchases of antiques. The remainder of the petty cash

slips, approximately three cubic feet originally found in this collection, were examined individually

and deaccessioned, as they did not possess any evidential, informational, or intrinsic value, and

were in uniformly poor physical condition. Employment records range in completeness, from a few

handwritten memos to full typed payroll lists. Aside from the names, wages, and home addresses of

employees, payroll records also include information on seasonal bonuses, gifts and financial assistance

to employees, employee references, and biographical information. Investment records include records

of bond and security purchases, legal opinions regarding bonds, deposit envelopes and records, and

bond ledgers. Bond ledgers may include, in a later year, records from an earlier year used as sources or

worksheets. Original order has been maintained in these files.

Sales of the Foundation’s publications are documented mainly by book sales journals and royalty

statements. There are also a small number of purchase orders from booksellers that do not appear

in the sales journals. The remainder of the purchase orders, approximately one linear foot originally

found in this collection, were deemed duplicates. The relevant information in the purchase orders also

appeared in the journals, and the purchase orders themselves held no intrinsic value, so all duplicates

were deaccessioned. Invoices and receipts contain information on a wide range of subjects, such as

the purchase and conservation of artwork and fine crafts; the purchase of plants for the Foundation’s

renowned Arboretum; and the construction of, and repairs to, Foundation buildings. Records of expenses

may include requests from employees for reimbursement, requests for checks to be sent to creditors, or

handwritten lists of mundane expenses. They also include purchase records for various antiques and fine

crafts, as well as two subject files, concerning expenses for the construction of the Barnes Foundation

buildings, 1923-1924; and for gasoline and oil during wartime rationing, 1942-1945. These subject

tax records convey the Foundation’s mission as an educational institution and contain information on

scholarships, employees, pensions, general operating expenses, and the Foundation’s tax-exempt status,
