The Barnum Park Project

Design Charrette, November 27, 2007 7:00 pm – 9:30 pm at the Barnum Center

A Design Charrette was held on Tuesday, November 27, 2007 from 7:00 pm to 9:30 pm at the site in the Barnum Center in Classroom 1. Approximately 39 members of the community, Bob Fox, Lauren Wood and Connie Folk from the City of Birmingham and Michael C. Smith, Paul Reinhold and Tiffany Smith of M.C. Smith and Associates attended the first meeting. The Charrette began with an explanation of guidelines and for completing the Charrette. Each table was set with a compiled list of park elements that were developed at the brainstorming session. Each item had a number corresponding to the amount of size that element would need on the plan. Each group was provided colored sheets with circles of the appropriate sizes for the elements. The attendees then formed groups of eight at five separate tables.

Each group created a design with elements that most members agreed were the most important and fit the use that they wanted in the park. The groups were given 90 minutes to discuss and record their ideas. The entire group reconvened and a selected spokesperson from each table who presented their plan to the entire group. Following are each groups plans. The next meeting will be the presentation of Conceptual Plans.
