The Batavia Chamber of Commerce is centrally located at 106 W. Wilson Street. Established in 1953, it continues to be a driving force behind corporate, industrial and commercial development within the community. New residents and business interests seeking information and assistance about any area of the city are welcomed throughout the year. The Chamber helps bring events to the community such as business expositions, the Chamber Leadership Symposium, Citizen of the Year and Ole Awards Banquet, Business After Hours events, Chamber Golf Outing, Windmill City Festival, seminars and networking opportunities. The Chamber provides a variety of services to help businesses remain competitive in today’s marketplace.

Batavia is a city with a comprehensive plan for growth, preparing its residents for life in the 21st century. In spite of rapid growth over the past 10 years, Batavia has maintained its small town, friendly atmosphere and first name basis for residents. Batavia is nestled quietly alongside the banks of the Fox River and is easily accessible via Interstate 88, State Road 25 east of the Fox River and State Route 31 west of the River. Batavia is currently at 27,300 permanent residents with the potential of reaching 30,000.

The city’s high quality of life was recently acknowledged in CNNMoney.com’s Best Small Towns in America 2009. Batavia ranked #56, with such features as its old-town feel, convenient location, community events and range of businesses.

A mayor, city clerk, city attorney and 14 aldermen, elected to staggered four-year terms, govern Batavia. Batavia’s city government stands head and shoulders above any city of its size in Illinois regarding the quality and professionalism of the service it provides to its residents and visitors, while keeping the tax base for the residents to a minimum.

In 1856, the U.S. Wind Engine & Pump Company, a windmill manufacturing company, moved from Connecticut to Batavia. The move was prompted by the inability to profitably sell American style windmills in the east. Batavia was a growing, vibrant and established community with an abundance of natural resources and a ready-made labor market. The fit was perfect. Other windmill manufacturers arrived in the 1880s, making Batavia the “Windmill Capital of the World.” Times grew tough during WWII because of the need for raw metal and the advancement of technology. Soon after, the factories saw their demise. Today, restored historic windmills may be seen on display at the Government Center located on the corner of Houston and Island Avenue, along the Riverwalk and throughout the city.

Shopping throughout the community, while not concentrated in the downtown area, is a pleasant experience. From the east side to the west side you find shops to cater to your every need. You will find a wide variety of goods nestled along the Fox River, conveniently located downtown and in specially developed major shopping centers on Randall Road.

Batavia’s pride is nowhere more evident than in the well-tended, well-cared-for homes found throughout the city. In tree-lined residential neighborhoods on both sides of the river, you will find competitively priced homes, with a median home price of $278,500. With everything from old-style Victorian homes to modern, luxurious estates, homebuyers will certainly find something that suits their taste and budget. Batavia also has competitively-priced apartment and condominium complexes on each side of the river with some overlooking the Riverwalk and river itself.

Batavia Public School District 101 offers eight facilities to guide the youth of community: six elementary schools, one middle school and one high school. More than 6,300 students enrolled in the district experience everything from traditional classroom settings to more technologically interactive experiences. Batavia is noted throughout the region as a progressive and effective system available to Illinois residents and should be one of the first calls by the new resident with children. In addition, a number of private and parochial schools are available, including a renowned Montessori school, several faith-based educational institutions for students from preschool through elementary school and three Catholic and one Christian high school in neighboring Aurora.

The Batavia Public Library is a gathering place for people of all ages. The library offers educational and entertaining programs year-round for everyone from tiny tots to lifelong learners. In addition to print and audiovisual materials, the library offers a wireless network, Internet access, reference databases and computer classes. A quiet reading room with fireplace, study rooms, community meeting rooms and a coffee shop provide comfort and convenience.

Batavia churches offer residents a choice of faith experiences and serve as a visible reminder of the traditional faith, which helped establish Batavia and make it the vibrant community it is today.

The Riverwalk is one of the jewels of the Batavia Park District. The Batavia Riverwalk is located on a 12-acre peninsula adjacent to the Depot Museum complex. Surrounded on both sides by water, the Riverwalk is a beautiful respite. It was created over an eight-year period through the cooperative efforts of the City of Batavia, the park district and a dedicated group of community members using volunteer labor and donated material and services. The crown jewel of the Riverwalk is the South Plaza and newly expanded Peg Bond center, which hosts art shows, musical performances and community races.

Spanning approximately 350 acres and encompassing 39 sites, the Batavia Park District takes pride in its ability to serve the 27,300 residents of Batavia. Whether protecting natural resources or providing unique recreational opportunities, the park district offers a multitude of quality programs for the entire community.

The Batavia parks offer a full range of recreation equipment including playgrounds and tot lots, basketball and tennis courts, picnic tables and pavilions, softball and soccer fields, jogging and bike trails, a winter-time ice rink and cross country-ski trails, and summer-time swimming and fishing.

The city’s primary swimming facility, Hall Quarry Beach, occupies a former stone quarry owned by the park district. It features a sand bottom swimming area covering 60,000 square feet that incorporates concrete “islands,” slides and a diving area. There is a playground and plenty of picnic tables. Keep the fun times rolling with the skate and bike parks constructed at 411 South River Street. The parks, featuring a variety of ramps, rails, pipes and other amenities, are a place for skateboarders and bikers to show their stuff.

The rich history of the city’s past is housed in the Depot Museum, a cooperative effort between the Batavia Park District and the Batavia Historical Society. Step back in time to 1854 with the Chicago Burlington and Quincy Railroad passenger depot. Batavia’s past comes alive through exhibits detailing the history of rail transportation, manufacturing of windmills, agriculture, banking, commerce, education and a brief stay by Abraham Lincoln’s wife, Mary Todd Lincoln, at Bellevue Place in Batavia. This community is proud of its historic past.
