I spoke this week with Tracey Colston at Port Clinton City Hall this week, but not about sewers or water issues. I asked him about his dad, my old friend Cal Colston, who has been stricken with an issue with his liver since the first of July. He started out having a partial knee replacement procedure that wound up with complica-tions. Then, he apparently had a reaction from the anesthesia. Anyway, he is back at Firelands Hospital in Sandusky in Room 427. I am certain he would appreciate some cards and well wishes. Let’s all hope Cal gets well soon.

Friday, Sept. 28, was going to be a very special day for the Port Clinton City School District and now, it is going to be outstand-ing!
That night The Ohio State Marching Band will perform at the Redskins football game, thanks to a request submitted by the Ohio State Alumni Club of Ottawa County. Ac-cording to Mike Snider and Mike Libben, co-presidents of the club, the band will stop in PC on its way to East Lansing for the Michigan State-OSU game.
Libben, an OSUMB Alum, said it’s a tre-mendous honor to have the band in our area.
“We are very excited that TBDBITL (The Best Damn Band In The Land) choose to re-turn to Ottawa County again this year,” he said. “It’s the third visit in six years. That fre-quency of visits in one area doesn’t happen unless we as a community are doing some-thing right to make their trip worthwhile.”
The OSUMB performed in 2006 in Oak Harbor at the Redskin-Rockets football game and again in 2008 at the Lakota-Woodmore game in Elmore.
Jon Waters — Woodmore High School Alum, two-time Script Ohio “i-dotter” and director of The Ohio State University Marching Band — is also excited about the return trip of his band to Ottawa County.
“This visit will be a tremendous oppor-tunity for us to bring the great tradition of Ohio State to the back yards and front porches of the people of Port Clinton,” he said. “Ottawa County is home for me and it is a second home for The Best Damn Band in the Land, and we are honored to be host-ed by the community.”
Details on ticket sales, seating and other aspects associated with events surround-ing the Friday, Sept. 28, football game and OSUMB performance are still in the works. Those interested in learning more about the PCHS All School Reunion, or to get updates on ticket sale information for the Sept. 28 football game, can visit the school district website, www.pccsd.net, or the Port Clinton High School Alumni Association Facebook page.

ALL SCHOOL REUNION
A rare American airplane — the P-51C Mustang — will in Port Clinton Aug. 9-12. The WWII bird stands out for two reasons: it has a bright red tail and it is a key part of an educational initiative to help people — particu-larly young people — understand and appreciate the his-tory and legacy of the special group of black pilots who flew airplanes with bright red tails during WWII — the Tuskegee Airmen. One of those airmen, local Harold Brown, will be on hand to answer questions and sign autographs Thursday, Aug. 9.
Brown, now in his late 80s, said he’s excited that people are taking an interest in the Tuskegee Airmen and credits an HBO movie, then a Hollywood feature film, for sparking that interest.
“The only tragedy that I see is less than 20 percent of us are still living,” he said. The other 80 percent never got to experi-
ence the awe and respect from those who hear their story.
The Tuskegee Airmen trained at a seg-regated base in Tuskegee, Ala., before the black pilots and their crews were deployed first to Africa and then to Italy where they distinguished themselves as
American military aviators. With de-termination and skill, they proved that black men had the courage and intelli-gence to fly and fight effectively against the Axis powers, particularly the Ger-

Moving Wall travels through county
Although it may be one of the smallest towns to ever host the Vietnam Combat Veterans “Moving Wall,” the plans being made for the memorial’s visit to Elmore Aug. 9-13 will make the five day visit the most memorable “Welcome Home” Vietnam Veterans have ever gotten.
The “Moving Wall” is a half-size rep-lica of the Vietnam Veterans Memo-rial Wall in Washington, D.C. There are 58,267 names on the memorial —253 from Northwest Ohio. More than 2.7 million Americans served in Vietnam from 1959-1975.
Ron Distel, past commander of El-more Legion Community Post No. 279 which is sponsoring “The Wall” visit, has spearheaded the effort to bring the memorial to Elmore. Distel, who served in Vietnam and is the commissioner of

Dear FriendsIt is again time to update you on what has and is hap-
pening within the Port Clinton city cemeteries and once again beg your generosity to help us say true to our mis-sion statement: to ensure that the properties around and within the parameters of the cemeteries are always wor-thy of those who lie within them.
Having set both long and short term goals we have no shortage of work to be accomplished. Many thanks go out to each and every one of you who have respoded to our past requests for financial help. The Ottawa County Community Foundation and the Stenson Foundation have been invaluable in helping us out with grant awards and we will continue to work hard for grant monies.
With the help of the city, the message boards are up but the project is still no totally complete due to some computer software issues being finalized by the city.
Keep a watch out for the new trash receptables. The city has donated the receptables and thanks to you and the Ottawa County Community Foundation we have purchased cement foundations to provide a permanent base for the to be placed upon. Getting rid of he rusted and dented barrels will be a real improvement.
Also to be completed this summer, curbing at the en-trance to Riverview Cemetery to enhance and protect the landscaping that was completed two years ago.
New gutters were put up at the mausoleum and the inside of the mausoleum has just been newly painted.
Other ways to help us is through the local funeral homes int he form of a loved one’s remembrance and we are still selling grave saddles at a cost of $15 so please keep that in mind if you find yourself in need of one.
We truly thank you for your continued support of our cemeteries.
If you would like to join our group or have any ques-tions or comments, we would be happy to hear from you.
Please feel free to call Dana Alvarez at 419-967-0495.

A summer kids’ event called Sky will be hosted at The United Methodist Church of Oak Harbor from Mon-day through Friday, Aug. 6-10. At Sky, faith and imagi-nation soar as kids discover that everything is possible with God. Kids partici-pate in memorable Bi-ble-learning activities, sing catchy songs, play teamwork-building games, make and dig into yummy treats, ex-perience electrifying Bible adventures, collect Bible Mem-ory Buddies to remind them to trust God and test out sciency-fun gizmos they’ll take home and play with all summer long. Plus, kids will learn to look for evidence of God all around them through something called God Sightings.
Each day concludes with Fly Away Finale — a celebra-tion that gets everyone involved in living what they’ve learned. Family members and friends are encouraged to join in daily for this special time at 8:10 to 8:30 p.m.
Kids at Sky will join an international mission’s effort to squash malaria in the African country of Mali — sending more than a million mosquito nets to protect Malian children.

The Ottawa County Museum, 126 W. Third St., Port Clinton, is present-ing an exhibit of artifacts and history from the Battle of Lake Erie, a pivotal local event in the War of 1812. Vol-unteer Kevin Winters of Port Clinton put together the exhibit from hold-ings in the museum plus his own re-search on participants from Ottawa County.
The largest and most important piece in the collection is a timber from Commodore Perry’s flagship NIAGARA, which was brought up from the bottom of Lake Erie. Re-tired Park Ranger Reggie Langford researched the timber and found that most likely it is a rib from the middle of the ship. A drawing depicting the frame of the ship and the location of the rib is displayed with the tim-ber. The exhibit also includes art-work of the battle, a wooden canteen carried in the War of 1812 by Stephen Carpenter, a cannonball
donated by A.L. Duff, the Roster of Ohio Solders, War of 1812 donated by Joe Gall, and a Perry medal com-memorating the 100th anniversary of the battle and found by Gary Bernon with a metal detector on E. 2nd St. in Port Clinton.
Using research completed by Pat Jeremy and a historical book on the Masons, Winters compiled a list of military men from Ottawa Coun-ty who participated in the War of 1812. Although there are a few famil-iar local names such as Clemons, Vel-
liquette, and Lockwood, many of the participants listed were from other parts of the country, such as Con-necticut, Maine, and Pennsylvania, and were buried here. Even listed are two British officers who died during the Battle of Lake Erie and who were buried at Perry’s Monument. Anoth-er of the participants, John Lattimore, served with the British in Washington D.C., and became a resident of Bay Township in 1829.
The museum also has a wall mu-
ral painted by past curator Elizabeth Denney depicting the formation of ships in the battle.
The museum is open Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday from noon to 3 p.m. until Labor Day and on Wednesday from noon to 3 p.m. af-ter Labor Day, or at any time by ap-pointment with the curator, Peggy Debien, 419-732-1039. The museum is open to the public and admission is free. Telephone number at the mu-seum is 419-732-2237.

The 30 members of the Catawba Island Garden Club under the leadership of Pres-ident Brandi Taylor, Vice President Karen Crall, Treasurer Carol Kubit and Secretary Janey Melle are constantly on the move — planning and preparing for a program, making the arrangements to attend an ed-ucational meeting or visit a place relating to the visual experience of flowers and the many subjects relating to them.
In the fall, members attended the Dis-trict 6 Fall Regional Meeting of the Ohio Association of Garden Clubs. The day in-cluded a flower show judged by an accred-ited flower show judge and a morning and afternoon interesting program with lunch. New member Eileen Smith, of Marble-head, picked her purple fall blooming iris and entered it in the horticulture speci-mens. She was really excited to win not only first place but also the Best of Show in the Horticulture Section. To win the “best of show” that specimen was judged the best of all first place horticulture entries.
The very end of November, many mem-bers journeyed to the Cleveland Botanical Garden to delight in the viewing of the many unusual trimmed Christmas trees
as well as the foliage and blossoms in the warmer area of the garden. Lunch was en-joyed in their cafe and, of course, many stopped at the gift shop. Most stopped at Pettites on the way home. Joan Ahlers made the arrangements for the day.
The annual Christmas Party was at the Vineyards with members bringing in the luncheon food. Sue Petersen and her daughter with the “golden voice” present-ed a program of Christmas songs. Member Margaret Mann led the group with more songs of the season.
Members exchanged gifts and also brought non-perishable items for those in need.
In January the group had its annual win-ter potluck at the home of Kate Bauer. Kate always prepares a tasty entree for the mem-bers. A brief meeting was held followed by a lively discussion regarding the Club’s May plant sale. Members were encouraged to start plants from seed that could be sold at the sale. Some shared their knowledge of problems regarding damp off and other difficulties one might encounter growing seedlings.
No meeting was scheduled for February.
The Firelands Toastmasters Club, at its recent annual installation dinner meeting at the American Legion, Sandusky, Ohio, elected the following officers to lead the club for the next year: Anita Cundari, pres-ident, Norwalk; Connie Jackson, vice pres-ident of education, Perkins; Richard Chap-man, ATM, vice president of membership, Port Clinton; Pat Church, DTM, Sandusky,
secretary; Patricia M. Vorhees, CTM, trea-surer, Sandusky; Victoria H. Orosco, sgt. at arms, Port Clinton; and Ronnie Hall, vice president public relations, Port Clinton.
Firelands Toastmasters Club meets every second and fourth Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. at St. Stephen United Church of Christ, 905 E. Perkins Ave. The public and new mem-bers are invited.

On Sunday, July 22, The First United Church of Christ honored Joan Tropf of Lakeside for her many years of service as church organist. Although no one remem-bers the exact date Joan began playing the organ at First UCC, she started in the late 1980s as a substitute and then gradually became the full-time organist.
The church celebrated with a special service using Joan’s favorite hymns. Before each hymn was sung, a person in the congregation gave a history of the hymn’s origin. The choir sang “Amazing Grace,” which was also the title of Rev. Kay Cox’s sermon. Katie Stecher sang “How Great Thou Art” as the offertory. There were 10 well-known hymns sung in all.
Joan was presented with a special gift and several pa-rishioners expressed their appreciation of Joan. A lun-cheon was served immediately following the service in the fellowship hall.
Gary P. Macko, president and chief ex-ecutive officer of National Bank of Ohio, is proud to announce that NBOH Team “Up” raised $6378.39 for the Relay For Life 2012 event which was held June 8 and 9 at the Oak Harbor High School. Their initial goal was to raise $5,000.00. The Ottawa County Relay For Life event raised over $70,000 to fight the war of cancer which well exceeded their goal of $50,000.
With several people on the team “Up” be-ing survivors themselves, the NBOH team took a personal fight towards their goal. One person can make a difference, and it’s about a community joining together to help in the fight.
American Cancer Society’s quote “I walked all night so that one day we can
walk in a world without cancer” says it all. The Ottawa County Relay For Life organization and the NBOH team has al-ready started planning for the 2013 event. If you would like to donate to the NBOH team, please visit: www.relayforlife.org/ot-tawaco. All proceeds benefit the Relay for Life of Ottawa County.
NBOH has been in business since 1934 and is an independently-owned provider of financial services to businesses and con-sumers. Currently NBOH operates four full service offices located in Oak Harbor, Curtice, Port Clinton and Oregon, and two loan production offices in Perrysburg and Fremont, Ohio. Information about the bank can be found by visiting www.nboh.com.

Steve Plottner, of Marblehead, has been promoted to executive director for the Lutheran Homes Society’s Fam-ily & Youth Services, the organization’s ministry that specializes in the care and treatment of seriously emotionally dis-turbed, high-risk, multi-need children and youth.
Plottner has served LHS Family & Youth Services since 1991, initially as a placement coordinator and then as assis-tant director. He graduated from Malone College in Canton, Ohio, in 1980 and at-tended Ashland Seminary. Prior to join-ing LHS, he served as publisher at SMS Publications in Evanston, Ill. He is the former mayor of Marblehead, and served as President Pro Tem of council for four years.
Currently, Plottner is president of the Ohio Association of Child and Youth Care Professionals, a statewide associa-tion comprised of those involved in the care and treatment of children, youth and families in foster homes, therapeutic foster homes, group homes, residential centers, detention facilities, and hospi-tals throughout Ohio. Prior to becoming president, he served on the board of the association for 18 years. He also chairs the Residential Treatment Advisory Committee of the Ohio Association of Child Caring Agencies and has done so the past four years.
“Because of his extensive experience in working with troubled youth, LHS is blessed to have Steve serve in this new role,” said Lorinda Schalk, LHS Vice Pres-ident for Youth, Housing & Community Services.
Lutheran Homes Society, founded on Aug. 6, 1860, began as a home for or-phans, but expanded in 1906 to include care of the elderly. The current LHS Fam-ily & Youth Services group home pro-gram for troubled children and youth be-gan in the late 1960s after the closing of the orphanage. Today, more than 2,300 youth and elderly located throughout northwest Ohio and southeast Michigan benefit from the Society’s residential and community services.

The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit will tell the story of the Tuskegee Airmen to young people all across America in an experiential way. We will use the Airmen’s story as an inspirational example of how they might reach beyond their grasp to attain new levels of achievement just like the Tuskegee Airmen did in WWII, and “rise above” the challenging circumstances in their lives.
Lt. Col. Brown, a Red Tail pilot will be signing autographs on August 3rd from 1 - 4 PM
The RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit will allow us to take this exciting story off the airport and directly to the young people in ways we could never do with using our airplane alone. When the exhibition and the airplane can be together at an aviation venue, the story will be even more compelling and powerful. We believe that the combination of the inspiration story of the Tuskegee Airmen told in an exciting and experiential multi-media presentation will inspire young people in many areas. We expect many will be inspired to pursue a future in aviation.

TELL TALES from 1A
mans. The Tuskegee Airmen painted the tails of their fighters red and bomber pilots began requesting the “red tail angels” as escorts to protect their “big heavies” from the German fighters sent to disrupt their missions. The Tuskegee Airmen flew more than 15,000 combat sorties and earned hundreds of medals and designations, includ-ing the Congressional Gold Medal in 2007 in honor of their war service to the United States.
“II think first we will be recognized now as having played a significant role in history,” Brown said. “Unknowingly we initiated some of the early attempts at integration.”
The former POW said it wasn’t until the men were older that most of them realized the importance of their role in history.
“At 17 years old, what did I know about politics and civil rights?” he said. “Our only interest was flying airplanes.”
Now though, Brown takes pride in his role and said he’s comfortable answering questions about his time in the service.
To answer even more questions about the group, Brown and the Mustang will be joined by the CAF Red Tail Squadron’s new RISE ABOVE Traveling Exhibit, a cus-tomized 53-foot trailer with expandable sides that houses a 160-degree curved movie screen and seating for 30 in climate-controlled comfort. A 14-minute original movie called “RISE ABOVE” focuses on what the Tuskegee Air-men — pilots and their support personnel — had to over-come to be allowed to fly and fight for their country dur-ing World War II. It also features some great flying footage — in the Mustang — that is enhanced by the long curved screen. Sponsored by the Texas Flying Legends Museum, admission to the RISE ABOVE movie is free.
The CAF Red Tail Squadron, a volunteer-driven non-profit organization that is part of the Commemorative Air Force, completed a $1 million restoration of the Mustang — named Tuskegee Airmen — in 2009 and the airplane has been on the air show circuit ever since. The Mustang had been restored once before and toured the air show cir-cuit for three years starting in July 2001 before it crashed due to catastrophic engine failure at a Minnesota air show in 2004. At each stop, its pilots and crew take every oppor-tunity to tell audiences the story of the Tuskegee Airmen, the first black fighter pilots to serve in the U.S. Army Air Corps (now U.S. Air Force) and the thousands of other black men and women who supported them.
The plane and exhibit will be on display at Erie-Ottawa Regional Airport from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Aug. 9-12. The event is free and open to the public.

Fun for the whole family at refuge
A group of four artists have been painting together over the past couple of years in a very informal atmo-sphere, both out of doors, and in the studio. Their styles are all very different, but their common goal of produc-ing honest interpretations of their selected subjects, whether it be landscapes, figures or still lifes, is their main bonding factor.
Lori Roberts-Cobbledick, Rick Dziak, Cary Ferguson and Debbie Prue; aka, “The Peninsula Four,” all live and work on the Marblehead Peninsula. Their backgrounds are as varied as their work, but their dedication to paint-ing, in pursuit of their passion, is the same. At first, they worked together at Dziak’s studio on Bay Shore Road in Danbury, or when weather permitted, they would ven-ture out of doors for some “plein air” painting. Later, during inclement weather, they would work out of Fer-guson’s Gallery on Rt. 163. Occasionally, they would be joined by other artists from the Toledo area. Jim White, Larry Golba, Dave Smith, have all made the trek to join the group at one time or another.
They all have been in-volved in the arts and painting their entire lives. And, they all have had their “day jobs” as the years went on. How-ever, the sheer pleasure of painting never really left them, and it was this common factor that ul-timately brought them together.
Dziak Gallery has put together a show featur-
ing about 10 of each artist’s most recent works. An in-formal opening is set for 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 10, and will offer the chance to meet all of the artists. Refresh-ments will be served. The show will then run through Sept. 3.
Dziak Gallery is located at 810 W. Main St. in down-town Marblehead. Parking will be available at the back of the building, or across the street from the gallery. On days other than the opening, the gallery will be open from 1 to 4 p.m. Wednesday through Sunday. Arrange-ments can be made for other times by appointment.
For information or to make an appointment, call 419-798-4994 or 419-494-4445, email [email protected] or visit the gallery’s website at www.dziakgallery.com.

EHOVE Adult Career Center’s Cosmetology Program has a lot to offer students or anyone interested in this growing career field. The program offers training for stu-dents to pursue a career as a Cosmetologist, Salon Manag-er, Nail Tech and Skin Care Spe-cialist. Students learn the cosmetic care of hair, skin and nails. Skills learned include: hair color, artifi-cial nails, hair cut-ting and styling, and skin care.
C o s m e t o l o g y instructor Gena Vanover says the program is quite diversified. From haircutting to chemical services to facial relax-ation massages, EHOVE’S Cosme-tology program offers it all. Stu-dents graduat-ing from the program are eligible to take the Ohio State Board of Cosmetology License Exam. “We have a 100 per-cent pass rate,” said Vanover. Besides the training students receive, Vanover believes it’s the real-world application through field trips, internships and a variety of opportu-nities that keep the program on top.
“We incorporate diversification into our program,” said Vanover. “We recently were a part of the play Hairspray with the Carol Crane Theater. Students really enjoyed it.” Vanover also says student participate in field trips to Co-lumbus and internships to gain experience.
“I am currently working on color procedures for the State Board, waxing and some basic haircuts,” said Cos-metology student Hannah Sloas, of Port Clinton. “It’s a fun learning environment. I get a lot of personal attention. The teachers are wonderful.”

the Ottawa County Veteran’s service Com-mission, said he is overwhelmed by the support he is getting from the community.
At 10 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 9, “The Mov-ing Wall” will leave the Port Clinton area to begin its journey to Elmore. Accompanied by six veterans motorcycle groups and state and local law enforcement vehicles, it can be honored by residents as it passes through the business districts of Oak Har-bor and Genoa before arriving in Elmore.
After the opening ceremonies are held at 3 p.m., volunteers will help direct visitors to the correct section of the wall to find their veteran’s name. They will be provid-ed with a carpenter’s crayon and paper to transfer a name to keep for their keepsake. The site will be lighted and manned 24 hours a day. Volunteers will be available to serve as escorts for visitors. There will also be tents for protection in case of inclement weather.
The Moving Wall is a place for healing for Vietnam veterans and families of vet-erans who served and gave their lives. It is a place to honor those who served, those who died and those still missing in action. It is also a way visitors can say “Thank you!” — words most returning Vietnam War soldiers never heard.
For many, Vietnam is history. They are too young to remember a war that ended nearly 40 years ago. Organizers have put together several events to help educate others about Vietnam and American war history. These events will be held at differ-ent locations in Elmore.
One of those events is an encampment with 75-100 re-enactors who will set up various camps to educate both young and old about the history of war in Ameri-can history. They will represent the War of 1812, the Civil War, World War I and World War II. Each camp will display life
of their respective period with displays and demonstrations of each era. The en-campment and displays will be held on Saturday and Sunday.
The Northcoast Veteran’s Memorial and Museum from Gibsonburg will display memorabilia from the Vietnam era at the Historical Society Depot and will also have a display from several area veterans at the library. Storefront windows in the business district will also have displays from Elmore area veterans who served in Vietnam.
For information about the “Moving Wall” visit to Elmore, contact Ron Distel at 419-862-2344 or [email protected]

Journey through Ottawa CountyOn Aug. 9, The Moving Wall will begin its journey at 10 a.m. from the Port Clinton Municipal Building (1860 E. Perry St.) escorted by hundreds of motorcyclists-most of whom are Vietnam Veterans. At approximately 10:30 the Moving Wall and its escorts will be entering the busi-ness district of Oak Harbor. The Wall will then travel Ohio 163 and 51 to Genoa where it will pass through the business district at about 10:55 a.m.
The final leg of the trip will be from Genoa to Elmore using Ohio163 and 51 It will arrive in downtown Elmore at approximately 11:15 a.m. The Wall then go to Depot Park where it will be placed for display. Opening ceremonies for the five-day visit will be held at 3 p.m.

Nashville-based singer-songwriter Erin Thomas has a unique and gorgeous voice. Her new album “You Don’t Know Me” is a collection of songs that tell universal stories. It features appearances by some of the best instrumentalists in the world. Although a relative newcomer to the stage as a singer-songwriter she has a new single “That Kind of Love,” a duet with superstar Vince Gill. Her singing career took center stage a year ago when she was forced to stop working as a horn player due to an injury. The result was a creative outpouring that has launched her on an exciting new journey.

Minuteman Press started opera-tions at 205 S.E. Catawba Road in
February of 2001 as a division of Schaffner Publications, owners of The Beacon and North Coast Busi-ness Journal. John Schaffner, presi-dent and publisher of The Beacon for nearly 30 years, saud that he was extremely pleased he was able to come to an agreement with his long-time manager.
“I know how dedicated Jim is, not
just to his craft, but to his customers at Minuteman Press,” said Schaffner.
Kieffer has been in the printing business since April of 1973 when he began a six-year stint at Fisher Print-ing in Galion. He went to work for Quality Printing in Bucyrus in July of 1979 and remained for nearly 20 years. In 1999, he went to work for Quick Tab II in Tiffin before find-
ing his way to Minuteman Press five years later.
Kieffer has been married to his wife, Beth, for 39 years. The couple has two sons and four grandchildren. In his spare time, Kieffer is a musi-cian and plays in the Port Clinton Community Band as well as in the Terra Jazz Band and the Terra Brass Choir.

Within a marriage, a man and a woman’s financial circumstances are generally pretty much equal. But if a divorce occurs, the woman’s situation tends to be somewhat more challeng-ing than that of her ex-spouse. And that’s why, during this major life tran-sition, you may want to meet with a professional financial advisor to go over your spending needs and your cash flow, so that you know what you absolutely need today — and how you can plan for tomorrow.
Before we get into some possible steps you can take, let’s look at some of the reasons that women may fare worse than men, financially speaking, following a divorce:
• Lower income — The average woman’s family income drops by 37% after divorce, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In many cases, divorce exacerbates a situation in which women were already trailing men in earnings. In fact, women still only earn 77 cents for each dollar earned by men, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
• Smaller retirement accounts — The average balance on women’s defined contribution plans (such as 401(k) plans) is only 60% of men’s average balances, according to LIM-
RA, a financial services research or-ganization.
Of course, “averages” are just that — averages. But whether you recog-nize yourself in the above numbers or not, consider these suggestions:
• Create an emergency fund. Try to put six months’ to a year’s worth of living expenses in a liquid account. Once you’ve established this emer-gency fund, you won’t have to dip into long-term investments to pay for unexpected costs, such as an ex-pensive car repair, a new furnace or a large medical bill.
• Contribute as much as you can afford to your retirement accounts. Even if you will eventually receive some of your ex-spouse’s retirement funds, you need to take full advan-tage of your own savings opportuni-ties — because it’s pretty hard to save “too much” for retirement. If money is tight, it won’t always be easy, but contribute as much as you can to your 401(k) or similar employer-sponsored retirement plan. At a mini-mum, put in enough to earn the em-ployer’s match, if one is offered.
• Rebalance your investment port-folio. If you are now investing for yourself, you’ll want to take a close look at your asset mix to make sure
it is appropriate for your situation. For example, your risk tolerance may be quite different than that of your ex-spouse’s. So if you now have total control over an investment portfolio, you need to make sure it reflects your needs and preferences. Consequently, you may need to “rebalance” your holdings.
• Above all, get some help. As men-tioned above, now is a good time to meet with a financial advisor. And if you don’t have much experience in managing your finances, you may even find it helpful to work with a trust company, which can collabo-rate with your financial provider to manage your assets and also provide a variety of other functions, includ-ing bill payment and record keeping. A trust company’s services can prove especially valuable to you and your family should you ever become inca-pacitated.
Unfortunately, a divorce may leave you feeling “at sea” in many areas of your life. But by following the above suggestions, you can at least help keep your financial ship in calmer waters.

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Wildlife is holding open house meetings across the state to discuss proposed rule changes to Ohio’s fish and wildlife rules. The local meeting will be noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Aug. 11, at Lake Erie Shores and Islands Regional Wel-come Center–West, 770 SE Catawba Road, Port Clinton.
Rule proposals encompass new rules for wild animal hunting preserves, commercial bird shooting preserves and wild cervidaes to align with recently enacted legisla-tion (House Bill 389). The rule package also includes pro-posals to define the geographical limits on reservoirs and bag limits on selected fish species.
Also proposed is a modification to the fish fillet rule. The following changes are proposed: fillets must be kept whole until an angler reaches their permanent residence or until the fish are pre-pared for immediate con-sumption; there will be no requirement to keep any skin on them; and this rule will not apply to anglers with a receipt from a fish cleaning house or charter captain which states the date, number and species of fish.
Each open house loca-tion will have a fish and wildlife biologist, as well as law enforcement officers available to answer ques-tions. For those customers who are unable to attend an open house, comments will be accepted online at www.wildohio.com. The form will be available now until Aug. 12.
Public input gathered at these open houses and through the online com-ments will be forwarded to the division’s central office
and considered during the formulation of regulations.A statewide hearing on all proposed rules will be held at
9 a.m. Thursday, Sept. 20, at the Division of Wildlife’s Dis-trict One office, located at 1500 Dublin Road, Columbus. This hearing is open to the public and comments are per-mitted. After considering public input, the Ohio Wildlife Council will vote on the proposed rules during the Oct. 17 meeting.
For information or direc-tions to the open houses, visit the Division of Wild-life’s website at www.wildo-hio.com or call 800-WILD-LIFE.
