Interview
M eeting singer, song
writer and performer
Jane McDonald is like a
breath of fresh air! Jane's friendly
northern accent and infectious
laugh left me thinking I had just had
a long chat with on old friend!
Jane is about to begin her
national tour 'Live across Britain
2011' appearing at venues the
length and breadth of the country.
I asked how she prepares for such
a large number of dates and her
answer didn't surprise me, it was
simple; "It is what I have always
done, I have always been a 'jobbing
artist' and when I was appearing on
the cruise ships I did 10 shows per
week so I'm used to hard work! Of
course we have been in rehearsals
for a while now, this tour is very
different and I am excited to be
working with musical director and
composer, Barry Robinson. Barry
has worked on hugh productions
for stars including Whitney Houston
and Natalie Cole and my show
will be a glittering 'Vegas-type'
production with amazing lighting,
costumes and glamour!"
Born in Wakefield, Jane trained
as an opera singer between the
ages of 14-16, which she describes
as very hard work but it taught
her to sing correctly; "when I sang
opera on my last tour people
were shocked". After working
in clubs throughout Northern
England and on various cruise
ships, Jane shot to fame in 1997
when the BBC began filming their
reality show 'The Cruise'. Shortly
after Jane became a household
name, releasing her first album in
1998 which immediately turned
platinum! Over the past few years
Jane has appeared on many chat
shows and spoken openly about
her mother Jean and her love life.
Jane first met her fiancée, Eddie
Rothe, drummer with the British
group The Searchers, 30 years
ago while working as a bar maid
in Wakefield between pursuing her
singing career. Now reunited and
planning to get married, Jane told
me how Eddie makes her laugh;
"It amazes me Ed is still here as
he is one of the few people to see
me with no make up! He doesn't
seem fazed when I'm without my
glamorous styling and clothes. I
absolutely love dressing up and I
never dress down, you will not see
me in tracksuits, I can't jog and I
am never seen without my heels!"
Jane left the popular lunchtime
show, Loose Women last year. She
found that over the past six years
of appearing on the show she had
concentrated less on what she
loved doing - performing! With an
album to write and produce there is
very little time left for other projects
but Jane says; "I feel lucky that
that the 'door has been left open'
for me to return to the show at any
time". I asked if she kept in touch
with any of the cast from the show,
"when appearing I literally went in
and out of the studio. My heavy
work schedule left no time to spend
socialising with the other girls and I
admit I'm not a good friend due to
my lack of time but I do try to keep
in touch with Linda Bellingham".
When I spoke to Jane, not
known for her culinary skills, she
was due to appear on a new day
time show 'Lets do lunch', hosted
by Gino D’Acampo and Melanie
Sykes. The show invites celebrity
guests to help Gino in the kitchen
but when I mentioned this to Jane
she sounded horrified, "god I hope
they're not expecting me to do any
cooking, I'm hoping Gino will teach
me a few tips!"
Following the new tour Jane's
work schedule looks as busy as
ever with her new album, due to
be released in the Autumn of 2012.
Jane is working on the project with
a new producer and she describes
it as 'really divaesque'. There will
also be a host of exciting people
working alongside Jane whom she
thinks will cause a few shocks -
watch this space!
Jane told me that the best advice
she had been given was from her
mother who told her ' it's nice to
be nice' - and that is exactly what
Jane is!
Finally, I asked this extremely
busy and talented lady how she
relaxes - again the answer was
simple - a cup of tea and an
episode of Corrie!

D o you sometimes feel as though all the beneficial
effects of the holidays are wiped out in one fell
swoop? After a week back at your desk, do
you notice the furrows on your brow deepen, the neck
and jawline feeling strained and the upper back gathering
tension? I am one of the lucky few who has a job with an
enviable mix of physical activity – outdoors in wonderful
surroundings – and cerebral pursuits, as I sit here writing
this article, for example! I must say, however, that after
only a matter of hours at my desk, I start to feel my neck
ache and a general stiffness pervading my upper back
and shoulders and this is despite being very conscious
of maintaining excellent posture. It’s at this point that I
throw in a few tension-relieving tricks before setting off on
another bout of desk-bound work.
On average I would say that I do a couple of chair-based
exercises or stretches every 1½ hours and they really
do work. Here’s a wonderfully relaxing stretch to get you
started, although those who come along to my 'Pilates4All'
classes encounter an entire repertoire of exercises
designed to leave you serene and relaxed.
If you find you are straining your neck and upper back as
you sit peering at the computer screen, then this is perfect
for washing away the tension. Now before you dismiss it
(because you have an open-plan office and don’t want to
look ridiculous) let me just say that it’s really quite subtle
and you won’t look silly - promise! As you sit at your desk,
with a lovely long back and your shoulders relaxed away
from your ears, place your right hand on your left shoulder.
Now drop your head down to your left shoulder and let the
weight of your head release the tension in the right hand
side of your neck. Keep breathing – always a good plan!
– and with every exhalation, feel your head drop a little
further downwards towards your hand. Now repeat this on
the other side, with your left hand on your right shoulder
and your head
dropping down to
the right. As you
can see from the
picture of me (left)
demonstrating this
stretch, this really is
something that can
easily be done at
your desk.
You may well
notice that one
side feels tighter
than the other – if
so, have a think
about your sleeping
position. Do you
sleep with your head always turned to one side e.g. the
right? If so, that could well explain the one-sided tightness
that you are experiencing. Food for thought?
And, of course you all should now know where to
find me if your back, neck and shoulders could do with
a more substantial dose of TLC!
back to work
Yes, it’s that time of year again: back to school for the kids and back to work for us...
ease away those tensions

health & well-being
Dr Joanna Helcke
W hilst kettlebells have been around for over
100 years, they have recently become the
must-try fitness trend for those who want fast
fat loss. But if you look beyond the media hype, you’ll
soon discover that kettlebells really are a phenomenal
tool to have in your fitness kit bag:
When you exercise with a standard dumbbell, the
weight is in your hand and, therefore, within the mass
of your body. By contrast, because a kettlebell is on the
end of a handle, the weight is outside your body mass
and so when you swing it, it exerts forces that have to
be controlled through your core, thus working the deep,
stabilizing abdominal muscles.
In concrete terms this means that kettlebells will give
you a brilliant cardio, strength, core and flexibility workout
all rolled into one short, intense session, so they’re very
economical on time. Great for busy people, in other words!
Ladies! Increasing your strength is a good
thing: it gives you muscle definition, it protects
you from osteoporosis in later years, an increase
in muscle mass helps you burn more calories
when you’re at rest and - no – you won’t end
up looking like body builders!
Gentlemen! Well, I don’t need to convince you
about the advantages of having a bit of muscle..
but this will also give you a cardio workout. Regular
kettlebell training improves body composition, making
you leaner and reducing body fat percentages.
In short, these fitness “weapons” are powerful but
they do need to be handled carefully, with excellent
technique and under instruction from someone
qualified to work with kettlebells. Do things the right
way, and kettlebells will be your answer to the new
“lean and mean” you!

B eing breast aware simply means knowing what
your breasts look and feel like normally, being
on the lookout for any unusual changes and
getting them checked out by your doctor. Lumps are
vital to look and, in nine out of ten cases turn out not to
be cancerous, so stay calm, remain in control and see
your GP immediately.
Checking your breasts is as simple as TLC...
T OUCH your breasts. Can you
feel anything unusual?
L OOK for changes. Is there any
change in shape and texture?
CHECK anything unusual
with your doctor.
No one knows your body better than you and everyone
will have their own way of touching and looking for
changes – there’s no special technique and you don’t
need any training. It’s good to get into the habit of
doing this regularly – maybe when you’re in the bath or
shower, or while getting dressed in the morning. You
might prefer to do it while standing up or lying down,
either way, the important thing is to be familiar with
how your breasts look and feel normally, so you notice
anything unusual – and remember to check the whole
breast area, including your upper chest and armpits.
Go to www.channel4embarrassingillnesses.com to
watch a video explaining how to check your breasts.
Remember, whatever your age, it’s good to get into the
habit of checking, the risk of breast cancer increases
with age. If you are over 50, you’ll receive an invitation
for a free breast screening every three years, and
remember if you’re over 70 (or you know someone
who is), you are still entitled to free breast screening –
just ask your doctor.
Breast Cancer Awareness Month is here to help with
breast cancer facts, information and breast cancer
detection so why not get involved this October and
remember everything you learn, forever - it might just
help out you or someone you love.
Take part in 'Wear it Pink" and be part of the cure! Organising a 'Wear it Pink' day is fun and easy. Team
up with colleagues, family or friends, wear something
pink and donate £2 to Breast Cancer Campaign. It's a
simple way to support the thousands of people affected
by breast cancer in the UK today.
Most cases of breast cancer are found by women noticing unusual changes, taking the initiative and visiting their doctor, the earlier breast cancer is found, the better the chance of beating it
CELEBRITIES WEARING PINK"This year I’ll be encouraging everyone I know to put their best cooking skills to the test to raise money for 'Wear it Pink'. Whether you bake a batch of pink cupcakes, or bring back the blancmange, it’s a fun and easy way to show your support for a great cause."

What is a hernia? The muscle layer of the abdominal (tummy) cavity is normally an intact wall of muscle, containing the abdominal organs. If for any reason a hole develops in this layer this is called a hernia and the contents of the abdomen can get pushed through the hole appearing as a swelling or lump. The most common sites to develop hernias are in the groin, around the umbilicus (belly button), vertically above this and through scars from previous surgical operations.
Why would you get a hernia? We are all born with various weak points in the abdominal wall muscles and in these places hernias are remarkably common, with 1 in 4 men developing a groin hernia over the course of their life and about 1 in 10 people getting an umbilical hernia. Sometimes hernias appear to develop related to a particular event but usually there will have been no obvious cause, the weak area has just developed a hole. This appears unrelated to the physical nature of peoples’ jobs and there is no obvious way of preventing hernias.
How would you know if I have a hernia? The commonest sign of a hernia is a lump that comes and goes, frequently disappearing when lying down at night. Often they will be noticed as a painless swelling when having a shower. It can be uncomfortable at times especially if you are on your feet all day and in the early stages discomfort (burning or aching) may be the predominant symptom.
What should you do if you think you have a hernia?Your GP will usually be able to confirm the diagnosis easily by examining you. Sometimes a simple ultrasound scan can be helpful if the main symptom is pain at the site of a suspected early hernia rather than an obvious lump. Once a hernia has developed it will not heal, tends to get bigger with time and has a small risk, especially early on, of strangulating and damaging its contents, often the bowel. If you are reasonably fit and healthy the best treatment will be a surgical repair of the hernia.
What does the surgery involve?Keyhole (laparoscopic surgery) involves 3 small 5-10mm cuts. The hernia is pulled back in and a permanent mesh is placed in the inner layer of the abdominal wall to reinforce the area and prevent any recurrence. Conventional repairs involve a cut in the groin with the insertion of the mesh in the outer layer of the abdominal wall. The surgery usually takes 30-40 minutes and you would usually be kept in hospital for a few hours afterwards. You should be able to walk out of hospital reasonably comfortably. It will normally take you about 2 weeks to be doing most things fairly comfortably and perhaps another couple to be more or less back to normal.
What are the long-term results?Less than 1 in 100 mesh repairs of groin hernias should recur. This means that the groin is much stronger after the repair than before as the risk of getting your hernia initially was about 1 in 4. For umbilical hernias recurrence is more common and for incisional hernias through previous surgical scars the figure can be as high as a third depending on the size of the hernia and the method of repair.
Where can you go locally for expert advice and how much does it cost?If you have private health insurance or wish to pay for this procedure as a one off, Nuffield Health Leicester Hospital on Scraptoft Lane has an established reputation for laparoscopic surgery with several Leicestershire based laparoscopic surgeons performing laparoscopic hernia repairs. A guide price for the total cost of the surgery, including hospital costs and anaesthetic and surgical fees is around £2000.

how they look and feel. Eyewear has
become as much a fashion accessory
as a medical appliance that can
enhance your sight.
Below are the four key steps
to consider when creating a
new look with glasses:
Step 1: Match the frame to your face shapeYou should consider three main points
when choosing frame for your face:
• The frame should enhance your
personal best feature (such as a
brown frame to match brown eyes).
• The frame shape should contrast
with your face shape.
• The frame size should be in scale
with your face size.
Step 2: Your personal colour analysisAccording to many colour experts
the three keys to colour analysis are:
• All people have either 'cool'
(blue-based) or 'warm'
(yellow-based) colouring.
• Everyone looks best in his
or her own colour base.
• The frame colour should
generally complement your
personal colouring.
• The main factors that determine the
best colour palette are the colours of
your skin, eyes and hair.
So, are you 'warm' or 'cool'?
Knowing the answer to this question
will help you easily select the right
frame colours. A 'cool' complexion
has blue or pink undertones and a
'warm' complexion has a 'peaches
and cream' or yellow cast. Olive skin
is considered 'cool' because it is a
mixture of blue and yellow. In the UK,
'cool', blue-based complexions are
more common than yellow-based
warm complexions with about 60% of
the population considered 'cool'.
Step 3:Choosing your frame colourOnce you have determined if you
are 'warm' or 'cool' then you can
find the frame colours that will suit
you the best. Some examples of
frame colours most suited for 'warm'
colouring are: khaki, gold, copper,
peach, off-white, fire-engine red and
blond tortoise. For 'cool' colouring,
the best frame hues are black, rose-
brown, magenta, jade, and tortoise.
The final choice you make also will be
influenced by whether you prefer your
glasses to be complementary to your
look or you want to create contrast
and make impact.
Step 4:Take professional advice on the right lensesFinally, the right frame will only look
great with the right lenses in front
of your eyes – you can choose from
thin and light lenses and reflection
free lenses which will reduce glare
and make your eyes look clearer.
A good dispensing optician at any
independent eye care practice will
be able to advise you on the latest
hi-tech lenses for your prescription
as well as best brands (Nikon, Zeiss,
Varilux, Rodenstock, Kodak Hoya etc.)
available and recommend the right
lenses for your eyes, the look you
want as well as your optimal comfort
and visual performance too.

T he 'fresh out of bed' look
is the long hair trend for
this autumn. It must be
dishevelled and un-kept but with
style! It is not difficult to achieve
if you make sure you get plenty
of volume through the hair. Apply
mousse to wet hair then dust off your
diffuser, tip your head upside down
and enhance the volume! If your hair
is 'club cut' and has layers it will help
this style to have structure.
If long hair is not your thing try a
dishevelled bob. If cut just above your
shoulders it will stop your hair looking
too long but will be long enough not
to feel too cropped. Try shorter layers
and blunt ends, if it’s good enough
for Alexa Chung it's good enough for
you and you'll definitely be looking
'catwalk hot'.
Why not spice things up with 'the'
colour for this season. It has to be the
“dip-dye”. Everyone at Indy Hair is
loving this new hair colour trend as it
doesn't look too 'try-hard' and what
makes it look gorgeous as opposed
to 'trashy', is that it's a gradual blend
of colours from dark roots to medium
toned mid-lengths through to lighter
tips. Plus, it's perfect for right now
because you can easily disguise
your summer lighter locks with this
two-tone/triple-tone effect - a win,
win for us all! Also with plaits making
a comeback for the autumn your
dip-dye colour will work perfectly.
Remember this is an uber-trendy
look so be careful, it's not a look
for everyone (possibly only for the
under 25's). Also it must be carefully
applied or it could look as if you've
forgotten your visit to the hairdresser
and are growing your old colour out,
make sure your colourist dilutes and
personalises the dip-dye look to
suit you. Remember, it can be hard
work to look as if you are not trying
so leave it all to your expert stylist,
your cut and the colour should look
perfect without too much effort and
of course complement all ages!

With its daring accents, this
season's make-up creates the look of
an independent but delicate woman.
Red hues are not only for lipstick; this
season red eye shadow and liner are a
big story with bold looks and colours
which won’t disappoint those of you
who appreciate retro glamour!
You can’t have failed to notice the
amount of colour blocking fashion,
from jeans to accessories it's
everywhere and make-up has not
been left behind! Bright, bold cosmetic
colours were all over the catwalks
and are a great way to add a bit of
‘oomph’ to your look. As the summer
fades there is one fail-safe look that will
keep you on-trend without requiring a
total overall of your make-up bag - red
lipstick! Remember to keep the rest
of the face very simple – just a little
mascara and liner, with a neutral eye
shadow if you feel you need it. As to
the colour itself, one shade of vermilion
that most people can pull off is a
straight forward pillar-box red. Chanel’s
new Rouge Allure in Enthusiast
(£21.50) is the perfect example of this –
provided it’s properly applied.
For eyes, take inspiration from
the shades and hues of autumn (a
classic gold is perfect!) Try infallible
smoky eyes in metallic, black and
purple and to accentuate your
eyes further apply eyeliner, with a
smudge of eye shadow, to create
a smoky effect. Leave your lips
light-coloured using nude lipstick to
create a sexy look for the season,
experiment with a lighter red
tint or break the boundaries by using
orange and coral as shown by Yves
Saint Laurent and Christian Dior.
Bold, dark lips will be a totally hot
look for the coming season! For the
perfect pout, apply lip liner to fill the
lips working inwards, starting near
the lip line, using feather strokes then
brush to add a bright shine.
Want a look straight from the
catwalk? Designers such as Chanel,
Karl Lagerfeld, Dolce & Gabbana
and Dsquared2 chose red tints for
their autumn/winter shows while
Issey Miyake and Marni opted
for coral. Marc Jacobs showed
skin kept dewy and natural with a
pinch of peach and powder pink
cream blusher blended down the
cheekbones. Why not take inspiration
from Rodarte's russet reds, golds and
tawny brown autumn shades. Apply a
subtle creamy bronze shadow swept
around the inner and outer lids with a
chalky white just above the upper lid,
fading to an ochre yellow at the base
of the brow. Lashes should be left
natural and brows untamed.
Hot looks round upSkin: a matte, natural-look foundation, applied to give an even finish, without a scrap of contouring or blusher in sight.
Lips: rich toffee-brown lipstick applied to lips which have been lined with a brick-red pencil.
Hair: rough, choppy, wind-swept
and natural.

Colour Collision: There is always a lot
of black on the autumn winter catwalks
(thank goodness I hear you cry!) but this
year it is punctuated by dazzling Jewel
and Spice Tones. Autumn's hottest hues
will all be taken from your spice rack;
paprika, cumin, ginger and mustard
provide inspiration and the palette looks
fabulous with dark denim, so get out
those jeans! Come winter the colour turns
from warm to simply eye-popping with
sophisticated colours of emerald, ruby,
amethyst, garnet, sapphire and citrine all
featured on the catwalks. They are exotic,
mesmerising and have such an impact,
these colours have taken over from the
brights of the summer, rich in colour and
giving the feeling of luxurious glamour
whilst wearing them.
Swinging Sixties: The catwalk
collections always reverence many a
past decade. During the summer we saw
the 70’s revival, but it's 60's that have
emerged as the hottest fashion era for
Autumn/Winer. This comeback is a serious
head-to-toe affair with sloping shoulders
and bracelet sleeves, polo necks and
miniskirts, knee-high boots and beehives,
trapeze shaped dresses, tunics and even
velvet trouser suits - groovy baby!
Feminine Forties: Another nostalgic
appearance, with all its glamour and
elegance is the 1940’s. It’s time to start
polishing up your act, after a summer of
relaxed dressing, things are smartening
up this autumn and winter. Think sharp
stiletto heeled shoes and ladylike bags
with neat lines and you’ll be right on track.
The recent lust for longer-length hemlines
has given rise to this season's take on
forties flair, which revolves around one of
my favourite classical pieces, the pencil
skirt. To fully dress for the affair you may
need to add a couple of extras, a little fur
shrug, pearls, long gloves and a slim belt.
Embrace this feminine allure with a strong
seductive power and elegance, add a pair
of elbow-length gloves, and if you feel
more comfortable, scrunch them down
for a more relaxed approach.
Fetish Fashionista: It’s time to crack
the whip ladies as this season has a
certain dark mischief about it! Last year
was all about gothic romance, this year
it’s still black but somewhat sexier, think
dominatrix boots, tight laced-up corsets,
rubber, lace and leather. But beware, to
wear this look without inviting unwanted
attention at the school gates, you’ll need
to harness your styling skills! Don’t start

having heart palpitations, you simply
need to look past the more extreme
elements of this trend and play to its
subtly seductive side, dressing with sheer
inserts, black lace blouses, smoky eyes
and a butter-soft leather jacket should
do the trick. It’s time to work a seam of
sexiness into your wardrobe girls!
Fabulous Fabrics: Texture overload
is what it’s all about, playing and mixing
it all up on the fabric front. Throw the
net out as wide as you can in terms of
fabric mixes, as long as they're luxurious,
robust and unapologetically mismatched,
this trend is all about contrasting textures
and is easy to carry off. Think about
mixing sequins with fur, check tweed
with leather, shearling and lace. Arm
yourself against the elements and take
pleasure in putting things together that
don’t traditionally belong.
No one will be left out in the cold this
season, the most tactile and tempting
of all the fabric trends is the many furry
looks, yes fur is back in a big way this
season, both real and faux so look
fabulous whatever your preference.
Glistening Goddess: Shimmer,
sparkle, glitter and gloss, this is your
time to shine. Sequins were all over the
catwalks, suggesting you can wear them
casually for the day time by having a
dash of a metallic top underneath your
blazer worn with jeans.
Simple Spots: This season is rich in
print and pattern, from decorative swirls
to lavish floral’s; my advice for 'print-
beginners' is to start with simple spots.
They were by far the most featured print
on the catwalks and are the easiest way
to wear this season’s print trend. You
can literally go polka dotty for spots and
circles, the more the merrier!
There are so many different trends
and looks out there for Autumn Winter
2011, there is bound to be one for you.
Although I’ve challenged you to be a little
more daring and go for a couple of bold
changes to your wardrobe, some of you
may not feel you have the confidence to
do so. If you are the type of lady who
welcomes winter dressing (covering up
your body and wearing black!) then fear
not. You are not alone and it’s about time
you let Cleo improve that self esteem
and have some fun - because you
really ARE worth it!
Why not try and update your outfits
through simply accessorising, great if you
are on a tight budget. You may love the
thought of something sparkly but daren’t
wear it, then try a metallic clutch bag?
It is an investment piece too as it will go
with everything. Love spots but couldn’t
wear them on your body, what would
hubby say? Why not try on a cheeky pair
of spotty court shoes to wear with your
jeans? Like the thought of black leather
but don’t think the neighbours are ready
for your dark side, then go for a fabulous
pair of boots.
If you struggle, you know where to find
me, until next issue when I will bring you
fabulous, festive style!

must have for your autumn look. Although it's bang on trend
for this season it is also a classic wardrobe staple that will
never date. Dress it up with a tucked in white shirt and
patent accessories or look uber chic and effortless with a
slouchy t-shirt and shoes boots. Black Bandage Pencil

F ollowing Cleo Lacy's expert advice, get ready to indulge yourself this autumn with sumptuous clarets and burgundies mixed with tweed, furs and
feathers. The shops are marking the end of the bright, playful summer with earthy clothes that have a hint of masculinity about them: loose trousers in muddy browns, severe greys and rusty reds: flat shoes and chunky boots: expensive cloths layered with hardwearing tweed and decadent furs: and unashamedly clashing colours.
River Island's autumn/winter collection includes sharp trousers and double-breasted jackets that can be combined with fake furs for an androgynous look that taps into another
trend, that of mixing textures - the more the merrier! Marks and Spencer shows how to mix it up with its fluffy, deep orange coat draped over a gold velvet dress finished with a patchwork of contrasting sequins.
For a more feminine approach to autumn there are plenty of dresses inspired by the 1940's that perfectly complement the many tweed coats available, as can be seen at F&F at Tesco. Printed fabrics are everywhere, from birds to flowers to butterflies (New Look has piles of pretty printed dresses to choose from), with a big sub-trend proving to be dots - lots of them! Our current favourite, however is Matalan's very sweet dotted dress - snap it up now before it sells out!

Looking to winter wardrobe?update your
T he etiquette for appropriate wedding guest
attire can vary greatly depending upon the
style of the wedding so you may need to
become a bit of a 'wedding detective' but worry not,
there are plenty of clues! The best place to start is the
invitation, this should reflect the style of the wedding,
formal, casual, flamboyant or understated? It may also
indicate the dress code, such as black tie or casual
attire. Next on the detective trail is to consider where
the wedding is set. If it is outdoors and possibly going
to be a little blustery, then avoid anything too light
and floaty, after all we need to protect your modesty!
We all love high heels but getting them stuck in grass
or sinking into sand is not a good look! If the happy
couple are getting hitched abroad in the sun, then
avoid a suit and opt for a beautiful breezy dress to
help you to keep cool and stylish in the heat. If it is
indoors at a fancy restaurant or hotel then choose an
outfit that is slightly more tailored and dressy.
Every woman wants to find something individual
and not be faced with another guest looking like their
twin sister. This can be a little risky when shopping
on the high street, so make sure you shop early or
alternatively visit a smaller independent boutique,
their stock will be less readily available and they will
hopefully be able to put a whole outfit together for
you, including shoes, handbag and hat.
what to wear?Who doesn’t love a wedding? The invite arrives, you open it with excitement, check the date, find it's a winter celebration and suddenly panic sets in as you wander aimlessly trying to find the perfect outfit. Fear not, Cleo is on hand to help and point you in the right direction!

If your dress or suit is plain and uncomplicated then
add a little interest with your shoes and handbag. This
rule also applies if your outfit is rather fancy and full of
detail - keep your accessories simple. Whatever you
do don’t buy your shoes first, the amount of times
I find shoes in a clients wardrobe that have never been
worn, and the excuse is “I just had to have them, I
now need to find a dress to go with them!” This is
not impossible but certainly not easy and something
I wouldn’t recommend unless you have all the time in
the world to hunt around the shops!
If you are invited to the evening celebrations then
I recommend you dress as if you were going to the
theatre or dinner. A dressy suit in a darker colour
is perfectly acceptable and looks sophisticated, a
cocktail dress is a fantastic option, perfect to dance
in, but just make sure it is not too revealing. If the
dress code is black tie then bring out the bling! Beads,
sequins, fancy wraps and formal jewellery are perfect.
I have helped you consider what you should be wearing, here is my advice on what NOT to wear at a wedding in any season:
WhITe ~ this rule has somewhat relaxed but you need to be careful not to upstage the bride.
Black ~ during the day black is a no-go, for the evening you can however team it with white or cerise pink.
aNyThINg TOO sexy Or revealINg
aNyThINg sleeveless Or sTrapless ~ to a religious ceremony, make sure you take a wrap or a pashmina to cover your shoulders.
JeaNs!
To finish off the whole package, why not treat yourself
to a manicure and pedicure? Get your hair or make up
professional carried out for the day, if you look good
you will feel good and will enjoy the wedding day so
much more.
If you would like a little help and advice from a
professional, then please do not hesitate to contact

all looking good doesn’t just happen, it is my job to
show you how!

B athrooms are often not
the most substantial room
in the house in terms of
dimensions, but clever interior design
can work wonders in increasing the
perception of the bathroom size.
Using metallic surfaces or placing
mirrors on opposing walls in order
to disperse light throughout the
room can work wonders in making a
bathroom appear much bigger than it
actually is.
Lighting is also integral; the use
of clever lighting in addition to a
well thought out plan means that
decadence can even be achievable
in a small space.
When you think of a bathroom,
you think of tiles, and rightly so.
There are an abundance of quality
tiles on the market from those
made entirely from mother of pearl
(check Shellshock Designs) to tiles
which actually look like wallpaper
(Grespania Ceramica).
With a smaller bathroom, simplicity
is key, so white tiling is the order of
the day. Currently on the market from
Porcelanosa is a fantastic white tile,
featuring a wavy pattern with a lustre
finish. It can easily be accessorized
with colourful extras such as towels,
which can then be easily swapped to
match the changing seasons.
Window adornments are an often
neglected area. There are three
fundamental things to consider here:
durability, privacy and style. Without
proper ventilation, smaller bathrooms
do sometimes struggle with the big
temperature changes which are
bound to occur. If you have a small
room to decorate, leave out bIinds
and go for a smoked or distorted
glass finish. Blinds of any kind are
hard to maintain good upkeep and
can start to appear tired and aged
well before time.
When it comes to flooring, non-slip
ceramic flooring is perfect, It adapts
beautifully and is also scratch and
water resistant. Consider under
floor heating. The advances in
cost-effective under-floor heating
systems create a relaxing and
comfortable atmosphere. They are
relatively quick and easy to fit under
the tiles and eliminates the need to
add bulky central heating systems
when space is tight.
Take a similar approach with your
colour scheme as you would with
tiles. Beautiful creams and beiges
make a great neutral base to a room,
and you can start to create around
that with complimenting colours
introduced by either creating a feature
wall by or by using soft furnishings to
produce a space which has warmth
and depth. Bright colours are still very
much in vogue for 2011 and there are
some stunning colour palettes.
Use classic trends that are unlikely
to go out of fashion any time soon.
Classic, bespoke items will always
have their place. Delicate pieces,
such as mirrored cabinets and
his-and-her basins emphasise the
importance of the bathroom as a
core room in the home.
There is always a place for classic
trends, especially when fused with
modern design; they are after all,
classic for a reason.

If you are looking for inspiration for your new bathroom design – ceramic tiles are the perfect choice. There is such
a wide variety of styles, finishes, textures and colours to
help make your design dreams come true. Bathrooms are
such a personal space – and somewhere to express your
creativity to the full. As well as offering a fantastic selection
of materials, ceramic tiles also give you the opportunity
to install luxurious undertile heating, with controllable and
economical warmth beneath your feet – all year round.
Barry Slawson, Managing Director of East Midlands
Ceramics, says the choice for designers has never been
better. “The current vogue is for wet rooms and of course
ceramic tiles are the obvious choice – creating a watertight
seal for floor and walls. The opportunities for self-expression
through ceramic tiles are endless. As well as the tiles
themselves, there is a vast array of attractive and decorative
borders. One of the most significant developments in
recent years has been the phenomenal growth in natural
stone 'look-alike' tiles made from hard wearing porcelain.
These wonderful new products are now even better than
the real thing. They look and feel exactly like natural stone
but without the need for sealing and constant maintenance.
They are ideal for bathrooms.”

It's getting to that time of year, the nights draw in
and we start to think about turning the heating on
and snuggling up on the sofa. Just before we can
finally relax here are a few tips to help you and your
home through the season ahead.
Outside 'must do's'Check your guttering, roof tiles and lead flashings -
if you're not afraid of heights then get out the ladders,
clean out your gutters and check that your downpipes
(vertical bits) haven’t become full of leaves. Tennis balls
make good stoppers! Whilst up there have a good look at
your roof tiles or slates and check for any missing. Also
check any lead flashings and all sides of your chimneys.
Call a builder or roofer should any of these require
replacing as it could save money in the long term and
avoid any further complications. If you're not into scaling
the ladders, the easy way is to get hold of some binoculars
and look all over the roof. On a bright day pop up into the
loft and have a look around with the lights off checking for
any signs of daylight - a good indicator into missing tiles
or lead. Check for cracks in brickwork, stone and also look
at any external render for blistering or missing areas and
have these replaced before the frost starts. Also check
your paintwork, as now is the best time to repair.
Inside 'must do’s'Check out the ‘old boiler’ and have it serviced. It's
far easier to get a plumber in autumn, than trying on
Christmas Eve and a lot cheaper! By doing this it will
mean you will have the contact details of a plumber who
is familiar with your system should anything else go wrong
over winter. Check that your radiators are all full with
water. When your heating has been running for an hour
feel the bottom and then top of each radiator. If there's
a noticable difference then it will need bleeding. There is
only one way to do this, using a radiator key placed into
the bleed screw at the top of the radiator. However filling
up will be different depending on your system with most
new sytems requiring water to be added via a filling loop
usually located near the boiler, remember a boiler system
requires 1.5 bar of pressure when re-filling.
Check all pipes are lagged in the loft and consider
emptying the water from outside sheds, toilets and all
pipeworks particularly if it's very cold (as last winter).
Check your condense pipe. This is the white plastic
pipe from your boiler, if it goes outside to a drain then
make sure this is insulated very well (an old duvet will do
the trick) and during long cold spells it would help to pour
hot water on the outside to help any frozen water inside.
Failure to do this caused thousands of boiler problems
last winter and a daily inspection for ice can save that
expensive call to the plumber.
If you only do one thing then this would be my
recomendation - find out where your stop tap is and
check that it will turn off before winter arrives. It will cost
less than £25 to replace but in the event of a leak could
save you thousands of pounds whilst you wait for the
emergency plumber who just agreed a £250 call out fee!
Remember, if you're unsure about anything then call in a professional.

W ith a dedicated architect
as part of the team,
Blackstone can work
seamlessly through a planning and
approval process, liaising with local
councils or independent advisors
to fulfil any building regulation
requirement. Managing Director Garry
Black says, “At Blackstone we feel that
it is imperative that our clients know
what we are doing and understand
the steps we will take to deliver a
successful building project. Costs and
stage payments are agreed upfront
and where appropriate our architect
is brought in automatically after the
initial meeting. Blackstone wants its
customer relationships, like its
building work, to be built on firm
foundations and long lasting.”
Blackstone transformed a small
kitchen and lean-to plastic roofed
conservatory into a family kitchen and
large living area, making the most of
the scenic position of the property,
building the extension with that in
mind. With full involvement from their
architect and structural engineer, every
step of the design, planning and build
process was dealt with by the team at
Blackstone, including liaising with the
building inspectors. Client Katie Willetts
said, “Having renovated our house
ourselves to the highest standards, we
had high expectations for the company
we chose to deliver our project. It was
a huge undertaking and Blackstone
were fantastic, delivering on time and
attending straight away to everything in
a timely and friendly manner. We could
not have asked for anything more and
are extremely happy to be living in our
new, lovely and light, family space.”
Carefully adhering to conservation
regulations, a one hundred and fifty
year old church was converted into an
apartment building. Designed originally
to house a congregation, with the
acoustics to manage such an event,
the project proved interesting and
challenging, demonstrating Blackstone
at its best. Angela Vickers, the owner,
explains, “It was important that the
historical aspect of the church was
intertwined with the contemporary
look of the new apartments. The
original features were maintained and
built around, some of which proved
to be a challenge. As well as all the
building work involved, Blackstone
took full responsibility for the planning
and designing of the renovation
demonstrating excellent project
management skills, full use of their
professional team and the Blackstone
process of working”.
Blackstone renovated a three
hundred year old cottage that was
in such a state of disrepair it would
have fallen down within a year of the
project starting. The cottage was
totally revamped, including restoring
the thatched roof to its former glory.
Gable walls were falling down, the
crumbling chimney had to be taken
out and totally rebuilt to conform to
conservation standards and hand
crafted new sash windows were
fitted. After the installation of a new
fireplace and central heating, the
cottage was completely re-plastered
with the utmost thought given to
electrical wiring needs. There were so
many varied elements involved in the
task of project managing the cottage
renovation that the value to the client
of juggling time, cost and quality of
the project was invaluable. After its
completion, owner Jane Sharpe said,
“A big thank you to Blackstone for a
job well done on a testing project.”

So often gardeners become excited by the
arrival of spring and consequently fill their
gardens with spring and early summer colour,
leaving the borders looking slightly tired around the
edges by August.
The inclusion of a few key late-summer flowering
plants will make a huge difference to brightening up
the garden, especially as Indian Summers seem to be
becoming more and more common. Perovskia ‘Blue
Spire’ has masses of tall, blue flowers, which add
movement and dynamism into the border. The blue
colour looks even more fantastic if used in a planting
scheme with Rudbekia ‘Goldstrum’. Another useful
summer shrub is Cistus, the Rock Rose, which is
not only covered by successional blooms, but some
varieties (e.g. ‘Silver Pink’) have lovely silver tinted,
evergreen leaves. For a larger, back of border plant,
nothing can beat Buddleja davidii varieties, with their
fantastic cone shaped flowers.
A tip that we use to prolong the Butterfly Bush’s
season even further is to prune in late April or May,
setting back its flowering time well into August.
Mixing summer flowering shrubs through your
borders, along with herbaceous plants such as
Verbena bonariensis, Sedum ‘Autumn Joy’, and
Agapanthus africanus, means that your borders
will provide a wealth of colour and interest as the
summer continues - enjoy!

LOROS garden
Following our visit to The Hampton Court Palace Flower show in July, I caught up with the Pauline Pitts and Rose Dejardin (designers of the LOROS garden)
to chat about their show experience. Pauline takes up the story...

Firstly can I thank you for bringing a coach of ladies
from Loughborough to Hampton Court to see the garden, it was lovely to see all those smiling faces, despite the mixed weather!
It seems a very long time ago when Rose, the landscape consultant at LOROS, designed the new Willow Wing Courtyard. Rebecca Newnham was commisioned to create a sculpture, but with insufficient funds the design looked destined never to become a reality. In order to attract sponsorship through national and local media coverage, I investigated the idea of staging a show garden at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Flower Show. The idea was to raise the profile of LOROS and the Hospice Movement and thereby fund not only the sculpture but also the redevelopment of the main courtyard which is now 25 years old and quite outdated. After lengthy talks with Rose and her husband John, I persuaded them to design a show garden with myself as team leader and primary fund-raiser and Martin Kilgour as landscape contractor. Sketch designs were submitted to the RHS in early December 2010 which encapsulated the theraupeutic benefits of hospice gardens and reflected the ethnic diversity of Leicester. We were successful in our application for a large show garden and then the real work began - raising money, seeking sponsors, sourcing materials and plants etc.
The really hard, cold winter led to a bright, sunny spring with no rain which played havoc with the plants, as you can imagine! We can remember desperately watering all the stock that we had grown ourselves as well as sourcing trees and plants from other nurseries who too had struggled with the weather. Meanwhile the fun began watching our designs turn into reality - selecting the paving, the metal gazebo being welded together (but still no rain to rust it!), the curved, wooden bench taking shape, choosing the bright pink marquee material, the saris etc.
Finally June arrived and we were allowed on site at Hampton 3 weeks before the show opened and shown our plot of 120 square metres of historic parkland in front of the palace! For the next 2 weeks the hard landscaping team worked extremely hard with many early mornings, late nights, lots of weather and on day 3 a flooded site from a burst water main to contend with! It was frenetic, a procession of mechanical diggers and huge articulated trucks loaded with Brett landscaping products, mature trees and a rusted metal gazebo travelling down the M40 and being navigated through the showground.
The final build up week was left for planting - Rose, John and I arriving on site in 30 degrees of heat, alongside vehicles stacked high with greenery. We all worked incredibly hard but there was a very special atmosphere - real team camaraderie with help and advice from the other exhibitors and the show organisers. Eventually everything was planted in the correct place aided by several stylish assistants in 'high vis' vests and safety boots!
During the build up, nothing prepared us for the rigours of the judging process but finally press day dawned and the show opened following months of preparation! There was a hugely positive response from the public - they loved the vibrant colours and yet found the garden peaceful and uplifting and this continual response kept us going all week. Those people who kindly voted for us in the 'People’s choice' category - we were runners up!
We enjoyed the show immensely and our highlights have to be the camaraderie of the excellent team we were part of, the public response, the Silver Medal and of course, all those bacon butties after an early start each day!
We were only allowed one week to dismantle the garden and the frantic work started as soon as the bell rang on at 4pm on sunday when we were allowed to sell the annual plants to the jostling public - it was like the first day of the sales! It then took 2 days to pack the sculpture, terracotta urns, bench etc into the van and carefully place all the plants onto trolleys, we
are so pleased that our garden is going to be totally reused!
The structural metalwork has now been taken directly to LOROS where it is stored until we are ready to re-build. The sculpture has spent the remainder of the summer at the Art Dejardin Sculpture garden in Wing, Rutland which is very fitting as this is where its sponsors, Celia and Richard Mackay of Kilworth House Hotel first met
the artist. All the trees, shrubs and plants are also at Wing, where Rose has had a busy summer watering!
We would like to thank the Freemasons’ sponsorship which has enabled us to begin planning the relocation of the show garden at LOROS. The sculpture and bench will possibly be positioned within the Willow Wing Courtyard and the remainder will be re-configured in the redevelopment of Main Courtyard - in effect two gardens for the price of one! The plan is for the work to commence this autumn with the planting to take place next spring - we shall be looking for volunteers!
If you would like to volunteer your help with the garden log on to www.lorosgarden.org.uk for more information.
Many thanks Pauline and Rose, we will catch up with you again when the garden is officially 're-opened' at LOROS.

and the vast majority
of us would like to
have more. But how do you feel
about money? Is it a vulgar word
that isn’t mentioned in polite
company or do you feel you
deserve every penny you get?
Marie-Claire Carlyle, a former
sales director from Chester,
has used her own business
experience to become a highly
successful transformational
coach. Her ideas in her book
“How to Become a Money
Magnet” are aimed at anyone
who would like more money in
their lives but don’t know where
to start. This is especially true for
small businesses, new and old.
Marie-Claire tells the beacon...“small business owners need to
take responsibility for their reality.
It’s too easy to blame the shortfalls
of your business on the economy,
the government or your clients.
Taking responsibility puts you
back in the driving seat of your
own life so you can create the life
you want. My tops tips for small
business owners are; know your
accounts - how much money is
coming in and how much is going
out? Meet with your accountant,
get real with your business and
then you can move it forward.
Have a financial target; write
down how much money you want
and by what date. You may not
achieve it but you’ll achieve more
than if you didn’t have a target.
Finally, make sure you are really
committed to your business, don’t
cling on to a business just because
you’ve always done it.
If you are thinking of starting
your own business, be clear about
what you want, do something
that excites you and that you are
passionate about. Don’t go into
it just for the money. Remember
to ask for help, there are many
people out there wanting to help
with finance, creativity or can give
you skills you’ll need.
Business has changed,
nowadays you need to be open to
different ways of doing it. Look for
complimentary businesses that
you can pair up with - don’t think
you have to do it all yourself.
That’s exhausting.”
There is one thing that Marie-Claire advises you can do right now...“Clear your clutter, whether it’s
at home, in your office or your
accounts, spend some time just
clearing it all out. Even the people
you mix with - if you’re with people
who are saying ‘poor me’ all the
time that will have an impact on
you and you deserve better.”
It’s easy to see why Marie-Claire
has become so successful;
her enthusiasm and passion
about what she does, her ability
to share her experience with
others, so that they too can be
successful, is infectious.

More women than ever are choosing entrepreneurship as a viable option, but do you
need a unique business idea before you enter the world of the self employed? Some of the best ideas are the simple ones and it’s often a product or service that already exists, simply delivered or packaged in a different way that is enough to make it unique. Bespoke cake making has always been popular for special occasions, particularly weddings, look at the current trend of cup cakes replacing traditional cakes as an option, beautifully adorned in icing to match the wedding dresses.
Questions to ask yourself when considering creating your enterprise:
What am I good at and what do I love doing? If you earn a living doing something you are good at and you love doing, it won’t feel like work. How exciting does that sound?
Do you look forward to Monday mornings? I am privileged to work with many people who do, people just like you who are embarking on their new business journey. Imagine knowing where you want your business to go, being clearly aware of how you are going to do it and having a product or
service that you totally believe in and have checked is viable. Couple that with an unshakeable belief in yourself and your own abilities and I would say you have a pretty great formula for success!
So where do you start? Always with yourself, then with a robust business plan in whatever format works for you.
Where can you find this level of help? Leicester Business Women is an exciting programme, developed by the Making It team, which has been running successfully in the city of Leicester since September 2009 with the mission of helping females to start their new enterprise. By joining you can learn about the practicalities of business and also improve levels of confidence and motivation. It doesn't matter at what stage you are in your business, whether starting up or established, or even whether you work from home or have your own office. There are a variety of ways that you can access Leicester Business Women; Motivational Coaching Sessions, Leicester Business Women training workshops, informal networking events etc. Leicester Business Women focuses on developing your self confidence and motivation.
Just take a look at what some of our clients have to say:
"The workshops are fantastic - a great way to build your self confidence and at the same time, start your business"
“My praises to the tutor who has such positive energy”
“Very interactive, not intimidating and very happy with everything discussed”
These courses are now developing into the County of Leicestershire. email: [email protected] or call 0116 251 8730 quoting the beacon magazine to find out dates and secure your place on the new taster sessions.

Marketing campaigns need to be sophisticated and any money spent needs to be returned in revenue. Nowhere is this more true than in a small business,
where budgets can be tight and every penny has to work hard. It can be difficult to effectively track your campaigns and understand what is working for you, potential customers often can't recall where they heard about you and your staff have little time to waste questioning them, especially when they have other calls waiting and work to be getting on with. Your limited resources can leave many of the calls generated unanswered, wasting opportunities and distorting your evaluation of your marketing campaigns.
Weekend and evenings are prime times for missed calls. When the weekend comes and customers are free and ready to do business your offices are shut, they get no response and the moment has gone! Moreover, with websites becoming the new shop front for small businesses, making your business accessible 24/7. Without phone booking and order support throughout the night and weekend many of your prospective
customers can only window shop and will quickly lose interest. For large companies an easy way to become more
accessible is to hire additional staff and develop their own 24 hour call centre, but for small businesses or self employed professionals the time and expense of recruitment is prohibitive. Many resort to mobile phones as a solution and are resigned to the fact that midnight wake up calls are a necessary evil! But first impressions count. The first few seconds of a client call defines their opinion of your brand and mobiles can make it difficult to present a professional image. The background noise or loss of signal can make conversations unclear and you can be limited in the details you can record when out and about. Prospects can get the impression you are disorganised or disinterested and if you are unable to pick up immediately or your phone diverts to voice-mail you are likely to lose the prospect to a competitor who is more responsive.
One possible solution is to divert your calls to a call answering service. Your calls can be answered around the clock by professional operators. Your brochure requests can be fulfilled, orders processed, appointments booked, questions answered and full messages taken for you to follow up at your convenience without any interruption to you and your busy team. A call answering service could also provide dedicated phone numbers for each and every one of your campaigns and a variety of reports to tell you the demographics of your callers, the times they call and what they usually request - invaluable information for evaluating your campaigns and understanding what works.
A call answering service is a cost effective way of ensuring none of your hard earned cash spent on marketing is wasted and you are getting the enquiries, responses and new business your hard work deserves.
Getting the most
We all understand the importance of promoting our businesses and we have a variety of advertising and marketing options available to us, but how can we guarantee we are getting the most out of our chosen activity and how do we know if our campaigns are working for us and if our budget is being spent effectively?

R etirement is not what it used to be – the days
of a comfortable old age cushioned by a
clear-cut pension income are now the stuff
of dreams for many of us.
Changes in the law have made it difficult to know
how to make the most of the pension opportunities but
nevertheless, there are some simple steps you can take
to boost your pension pot. The sooner you start building
your pot, the smaller the percentage of your earnings
you will need to save. One of our team can help you
with the figures but initially aim for a pension fund equal
to two thirds of your final salary. Your annual pension
contributions, expressed as a percentage of earnings,
should equal half your age when you start saving.
If you are already building your pension fund, then check
that you are getting the best out of your arrangements.
Make the most of tax breaks because contributions attract
basic rate tax relief and can add around 25% to your pot.
Even more is possible if you are a higher rate taxpayer.
If you are employed and can join a company staff
pension scheme, do so. This means your employer
will also be contributing to your own pension pot and
that’s 'free money'. If you ignore this opportunity, it can
be the same as taking a pay cut. You can also make
additional voluntary contributions within a company or
personal pension arrangement, with the dual advantage
of increasing your pension pot, whilst cutting your tax bill.
And don't forget you can set up your own pension fund
and that it is important to check from time to time that
your pension fund arrangements are working for you.
It is important to understand the choices you have
before, during and after building your pension pot so if
you are unsure what to do for the best at any stage, then
contact me on 0116 2355 733 and I will be happy to help.

Ratcliffe College 2011 GCSE resultsStudents and staff are celebrating the best ever set of GCSE results at
Ratcliffe College, including 56% of grades at A* and A grades, and 82%
of grades at Grade B or higher. Headmaster, Gareth Lloyd, commented:
'This year’s GCSE results represent a superb all-round performance by
Ratcliffe students. The most able girls and boys achieved the highest
grades across the board; yet there were exceptional results from all
students, and very nearly all achieved at least a Grade B in all of their
examinations. This reflects excellently on the students, and of course
their teachers, and bodes very well for the future.”
Grace Dieu has a ball! The annual Summer Ball at Grace Dieu Manor School celebrated the end

You may have noticed these little hieroglyphic squares popping up all over the place, on adverts, public information, even on clothing labels. They
are actually called Quick Response codes (QR), they are the next ‘big thing’ and even better news - they are free.
If you have a smart phone, the codes give you immediate access to the information being advertised. But QR codes aren’t new - they’ve been used extensively in Japan for over ten years and now the rest of the world is catching on. The squares look similar to bar codes but QR codes are two dimensional and can hold much more information. This, and their ease of use makes them ideal for small business owners. They can be used anywhere you advertise; on your leaflets, business cards or letterheads.
When you scan or read a QR code with your iPhone, Android or smartphone, you can link to a specific website, a text or phone number. This is a very quick and easy way of directing people to you.
To create your own QR code just takes a few minutes. Simply enter the required data into a QR code generator and your personal QR code is produced. There are a number of sites for generating QR codes - I used Kaywa.
To read these codes you need a QR code reader for your smartphone. The most popular is i-nigma but an internet search will give you the options for your mobile.
Now you can impress your all friends with your technological know-how!

O n outward appearance, Nissan’s Leaf is fairly conventional. It sits
somewhere between a hatchback and mini MPV, happily transporting up to five people in its light, airy interior. Pressing the keyless button start is almost an anti-climax, the only signs of life are the illuminated instruments and some beeps. Direction is selected by pushing something akin to a robot’s knee cap where a conventional gear lever would sit and it’s time for the off!
Aside from the charging process and almost silent running, it is just like driving any other automatic hatchback: very easy. All the standard controls are present and it is the information in front of the driver which acts as sole reminder of the alternative method of propulsion. Certainly, it is difficult not to be drawn to the range indicator, knowing I had little choice where to charge the Leaf meant that I deliberately retained a significant buffer 'just in case'. To help counter some range concerns, the navigation
system cleverly displays available range in real time using a halo around the car's current location. The inherent problem is that with varied traffic and road conditions, predicted range doesn’t always translate into real miles (I managed to knock off 20 miles in less than five miles of real motorway).
On the road, it’s oddly quiet with only gentle wind noise and a slight tyre rumble. Handling is competent, aided by the low position of the battery packs for stability. Power is to the front wheels via an 80 kW (110 hp) motor, 210 lb ft torque provides strong pull right up to motorway speeds despite a kerb weight exceeding one-and-a-half tonnes. Top speed is 95 mph – and in theory it’s the same in reverse (Halford’s car park wasn’t large enough to try this out)! Brakes are efficient although lacking the feel of the standard vacuum-enhanced variety and the steering allows easy positioning of the vehicle although with an absence of self-centring action.
Recommended for home charging,
higher current ‘domestic sockets’ using the standard three pin plug but rated at 30A (like the feed to an electric oven) taking about 8 hours to charge the Leaf fully. Nissan's suggested use of standard household 13A sockets is really just a back-up method for occasional charging, taking 10-12 hours. Special 450V three phase outlets (initially available at accredited Nissan dealers) will bring the vehicle to 80% of charge in about half an hour.
In variable conditions, the Leaf’s range is quoted at just over 70 miles - and therefore isn’t currently a solution to fit all requirements. Nor is it cheap at £25,990 (including the £5,000 government grant), although some of this should be offset with charging at around £2 and over £1,500 per annum saved for those paying daily congestion charges in the capital.
So if range isn’t important or the Leaf is to be a second 'commute-only' car, NIssan offer an attractive option worth considering - give it a try!

N o need to search for it - in the Maldives,
relaxation is more or less naturally thrust upon
you! Imagine a holiday where the normal
stresses of everyday life effortlessly melt away into
a paradise of pure soft white sand and crystal clear
turquoise lagoons. Where your most pressing decision
is pool or beach; beer or cocktail?
At first sight from the air, the islands appear to be part
of an alien landscape. A world of water punctuated by
a myriad of islands. Circular outcrops of lush greenery,
each surrounded by a turquoise rim, like tropical
freckles on a skin of ocean.
The Maldives are a chain of 26 coral atolls consisting
of around 1200 islands situated 400 miles southwest of
the southern tip of India in the Indian Ocean. Of these
islands, only 200 are inhabited and around 150 of these
are holiday resorts. Each of these islands is a self-
contained resort ranging from natural, tropically simple
and informal to sharp contemporary luxury. Some are
small enough to walk around in 10 minutes, others
are larger with a range of facilities and several bars
and restaurants.
Arriving at Malé airport is pretty straight forward. With
a minimum of fuss, one is soon ready for transfer to your
chosen island paradise. The outer islands are reached by
a spectacular sea plane ride, but many can be reached
by a short speedboat trip. The 3 and 4 star resorts
tend to be bigger islands, the resort of Vilamendhoo for
example has a putting green, tennis courts, spa, 184
rooms, 5 restaurants and even a football pitch!
My personal favourite in this category is Kuramathi.
A superbly designed 4 star resort with a wide range of
well appointed accommodation. It has several bars,
restaurants and swimming pools, all contained within
an elongated island that takes all of 30 minutes to
walk from one end to the other.
Be prepared for complete relaxation!

At the other end of the scale, there is Maafushivaru,
a tiny island but beautifully put together. Only 500
metres in length, the resort is the very epitome of a
desert island hideaway. Its 50 rooms are chic, sharp and
contemporary, an example of barefoot luxury.
Some islands like Huvafenfushi and Baros are just
impossibly luxurious. Huvafenfushi in particular is
simply stunning. Follow sand paths from beautiful
palm thatched bungalows to the only underwater spa in
the Maldives where the 360° panoramic window looks
straight into a world of coral and tropical fish.
Having chosen an island, the decision then is the
type of accommodation to go for. For many people,
the thought of going to the Maldives inspires dreams of
staying in a water villa, whilst not unique to the Maldives,
the islands are certainly well known for this type of
accommodation. These are effectively hotel rooms built
on stilts over water and afford guests direct access into
the lagoon with unrestricted views over the ocean and of
course, an incredible vista of sunrise or sunset. However,
I personally feel that there is nothing to beat waking up
in your own beach villa, walking across your decked
patio onto a pristine white beach, passing a couple of
palm trees and into a warm crystal clear sea.
Whatever your choice, all the islands have some
of the most spectacular snorkeling and diving anywhere
in the world, most have their own reef, a dive school
and expert tuition on hand. All are islands where normal
superlatives become meaningless when confronted with
a location described by many as heaven on earth.
All are places where mind, body and spirit can
regenerate and recharge.
Some say that it’s not possible to relax totally –
but the Maldives may just make it impossible not to!

For the filling: Combine the double cream, cream cheese and sugar in a large bowl, slice the vanilla pod,
scrape out the seeds and add to the mixture. Whisk until thick, pour into the mould and place in the fridge
to set for about 10 to 15 minutes.
Glaze the blackberries in a pan with the caster sugar until just soft and the sugar has melted.
Place the blackberries on top of the filling and glaze with the remaining syrup.

Jantar Brazileiro (Portuguese for Dinner Brazil) is a new and exciting concept in fine dining, which brings
the flavours and dishes of Brazil right into your own home. Established earlier this year, Jantar Brazileiro is the creation of the young and talented Brazilian, Claudio Almeida Da Silva and has already quickly established itself as an experience as enjoyable and vibrant as its Brazilian roots. From an extensive online menu, Claudio will guide your selection, prepare your dishes and personally serve them to you and your guests. “Brazil is in my blood” he says “I want to express the love I have for my
country in the food I prepare for my guests”.
The Jantar Brazileiro dining experience
is available for between 4 and 10 guests,
or if you have a larger party in mind,
why not consider a Brazilian Buffet for
up to 50. Whatever your requirements,
you can be assured that Claudio will
look after you, and that by the end of
the evening you will be looking forward
to holidaying in Rio De Janeiro for that
world famous carnival!

We’re supporting our local children’s hospice, please help us.
Sadly, some local children don’t live long enough. As members of the Rainbows Circle of Friends, we’re supporting them and the people who love them most.
With your help, we can help Rainbows bring love, smiles and laughter to the children’s short lives.
As the East Midlands’ only hospice for children and young people, Rainbows’ incredible team of people helps relieve symptoms, improve quality of life, support parents and siblings through their bereavement and care for children until the end.
Please help us support RainbowsRainbows cares for over 250 local families every year and over 85% of their funding comes from charitable giving. As members of the Circle of Friends we want to support them and help some of our region’s poorliest children. We’re asking for the help of people like you – and we know that together we can make a difference.

There has never been a better time to invest in renewable energy, with Photovoltaics (PV) currently being the most popular system. They qualify for the government Feed-In Tariffs (FITs) scheme, where you can earn money by generating electricity and selling the surplus to the Grid. PV cells installed on the roof of your home or commercial property collect the sun’s light and convert it into electricity, which then powers your appliances. This is a great system that allows you to not only cut your energy bills by harnessing the sun’s energy, but it also allows you to make money Tax Free and Index Linked by generating electricity.
The current Government incentive for installations runs until April 2013. Once you’ve joined the scheme however, the tariff lifetime will last for 25 years Tax Free and Index Linked. Based on Government SAP figures a system costing around £12,000 to install would save you over £5,500 (at today’s electricity prices) and generate/earn you over £38,000 Tax Free and Index Linked in its lifetime, showing 13% return on investment. This will also reduce your carbon footprint by 1854kg per year.
Installing any renewable energy system within your home or business is a serious commitment, which is why it’s important to do your research and get several quotations.
To be eligible for Government FITs, your installation must be completed by a MCS certified installer, using only MCS certified products, which is why Eco Power UK are accredited by the Microgeneration Certification Scheme (MCS), as well as National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT), Register of Companies to Handle Refrigerants (REFCOM), Renewable Energy Assurance Listed (REAL) and are proud to be a member of Governments TRUST MARK scheme.
