The Saturday after Thanksgiving, after the turkeyhas been consumed, thanks have been given and blackFriday shopping has been accomplished, is The Game. The annual OSU-Michigan football rivalry was rankedby ESPN in 2000 as the greatest North American sportsrivalry. This year was the108th game in the rivalrythat began in 1897.

From the Catawba Innat the northern tip of theNorth Coast, to otherwatering holes and inmany living rooms, TheGame was celebrated. Inan informal survey it wasdetermined that Buckeyefans outnumbered Wol-

verine followers approxi-mately ve to one.At Cleats in Danbury

township, there were twoMichigan fans in a sea ofBuckeye Red. Actually, there was one. Steve andVicki Reissig were bothwearing Michigan shirtsbut Steve was wear-ing an OSU shirt underthe Michigan shirt andon his back was pinneda note that said I lost a bet. At their rst year anni-versary celebration this year Vicki and Steve collectedfrom guests for their charities, Vicki for the LymphomaFoundation and Steve for the Wounded Warrior Proj-ect, in honor of family members. Vicki collected $50more than Steve, winning the bet to have Steve wear aMichigan shirt during the OSU-Michigan game. Whenasked whether part of the bet was for Steve to cheer forMichigan, Vicki laughingly said that there are limits. ]

And yes, by the way, OSU won the game, 26-21.

December 3 is the grand opening for Portage ResaleCenter and Seed Faith Missions food pantry, in the Heine-man Building, 301 W. Second Street, Port Clinton. A rib-bon cutting for the Resale Shop will be at 10 a.m. and thefood pantry will open at 11:30 a.m. There will be cookiesand coffee and bargains.

The Heineman family gifted the building for the ResaleShop. Bob and Linda Snyder of Catawba and Marie Berryof Marblehead, along with the help of many talented vol-unteers, have made the 3000 square feet into a bargainshoppers delight.

The response from the community has been over-whelming, said Marie Berry, manager. We have so manydonations, and so few volunteers, but we are trying our

best. When you walk into the Resale Center, it has the feel ofan upscale department store, but with better prices andservice. The transformation from a warehouse has beenthe work of a dedicated group of volunteers.

All volunteers bring their own special talents, whether

it is sorting, merchandising or stocking, and we all have agood time, said Linda Snyder.

To volunteer for this community effort, to donate items,or with questions, call 419-732-1780.

Home sales activity throughout the local area andthroughout Ohio saw a huge increase in the month ofOctober, according to the Ohio Association of Realtors.Home sales in the area covered by the Firelands Asso-ciation of Realtors (Erie, Ottawa and Huron Counties)

jumped 10.7% in 2012 compared to October of 2011.

Dollar volume went up over 20% to over $21-millioncompared to under $18-million last year. The nal pieceof good news was an increase in average sale price from$106,000 in 2011 to over $115,000 in October of 2012.

The statistics continue to be encouraging for the yearwith the number of units sold in the Firelands area up by

4.6%; dollar volume up 8.7% and the average sale priceup almost 4%. The local numbers are not as good in com-parison to the statewide gures reported by OAR. In Ohio, the number of units sold has jumped over 13%, the dollarvolume up nearly 19% and the average sale price is up justunder 5% for the rst 10 months of 2012 compared to thesame period in 2011. Just in the month of October, homesales activity in Ohio increased 23.1%.

Its become increasingly evident that the Ohio housingmarket is making signicant progress in its recovery fromthe economic downturn achieving increased sales activ-ity for the 16th consecutive month and seeing a steadyuptick in the average sales price, said Robert Miller, presi-dent of the Ohio Association of Realtors.

    Mufer Smiths Review

Living on Catawba ull time and having 4 older vehicles I rely on Kim/Jakeat the Mufer Smiths to help me maintain the feet. Beyond being veryknowledgeable, it is their honesty and the trust that I have in them that

supersedes every other company. Other repair services have actually misled mein the cost or repairs but not Mufer Smiths. In one case they actually lostmoney by being honest and xing a supposed $2500.00 problem or $110.00.

I that doesnt speak volumes o their integrity I am not sure what does. Irecommend Mufer Smiths or all o your auto service needs.

The new vehicle storage building at theOttawa County Transportation Agency(OCTA) is open and ready for business. Its been a long year of hard work and itsure feels great to get to our new facility, said Transit Director Bill Lowe.

Environmentally friendly design featuresof the new building and renovations to theexisting ofces and vehicle maintenance

bays will substantially reduce OCTAs op-erating costs with increased energy ef-ciency. Funding for the project came fromthe federal American Recovery and Rein-vestment Act of 2009 and will continue tosupport a signicant number of jobs lo-cally.

County Commissioner Steve Arndtpraised OCTAs leaders for using the fed-

eral dollars to save the Ottawa Countytaxpayers money over the life of the build-ings. The decision to make a priority ofdesigning and building an environmen-tally responsible, energy-efcient facil-ity required Bill and his team a few moregovernmental hoops to jump through, butwe supported them 100%. We hope otherOttawa County agencies will be able to do

the same on any future building projects. It only makes sense.

BY YANEEK SMITHEric Sweets rst season as Oak Harbor

head basketball coach had its ups anddowns.

The Rockets, who showed promised at anumber of times during the season, strug-gled to a 3-18 nish. However, they havefour of their top players returning and theunderstanding that their coach is investedin turning things around. For a 10-yearrun starting in 2003, Oak Harbor had vedifferent head coaches and the programstruggled mightily.

But Sweet, who is committed to seeingthis thing through, is condent that teamhas better days ahead.

Point guards A.J. Cecil and Greg Haar, the teams top-two scorers from last sea-son, are back, as are wing Austin Wiegandand post Sam Laderach.

Those four guys as a core are good tobuild around, Sweet said. I dont thinkeither (A.J or Greg) is a true point guard;they both feel comfortable running thepoint. They form a nice tag-team in thebackcourt.

The Rockets must replace ve seniorsfrom last years squad, but do return muchof their production. Last season, Cecil,Haar and Laderach shot well from beyondthe 3-point line, keeping Oak Harbor in anumber of games with their shooting. AndWiegands versatility helped to diversifythe offense.

Rounding out the rotation will be wings

Tate Haar, Derek Wood, Andy Rathbunand posts Josh Sarahman and Ben Co-chran with Cole Wierich, Bryce Rubie andAndrew Benner possibly seeing some ac-tion as well.

(Playing) eight guys is what I envision,Sweet said. If these guys make me playnine or 10, then Ill play them. Im look-ing at eight, but Ill adjust to what I get. Imight go nine-deep or 10-deep.

More than anything, Oak Harbors suc-cess will hinge on two things: (1) playinggood defense; and (2) consistently hittingthree-point shots.

Were going to shoot a lot of threes.A.J and Greg like shooting the threes. If

you look at some of the games where wefell apart, we played poor defense and wemissed threes.

Oak Harbor boys look to rebuild

BY YANEEK SMITHDuring the offseason, the Rockets wel-

comed former Genoa head coach TomKontak to the program, a move that cre-ated some buzz within the community andgave people reason to be optimistic aboutthe future.

Kontak, who used to coach basketballand softball at Genoa High School, had agreat career coaching basketball with theComets. In six seasons, Kontaks teams hada 91-44 record, won two Suburban LakesLeague titles (2006-07; 2007-08), nishedsecond three times and won more games,61, in the conference during that span thanany other team.

Oak Harbor must replace its top per-

former from last season in Allison Dunn,a second-team SBC selection, who ledthe team in scoring and was second inrebounding. However, Abbie Gezo, whowas second in scoring and led the team inrebounding, returns, as does point guardMakayla Carpenter and wing Maria Boers.Joining them on the team are newcomersJordyn Dunn and Andrea Cecil, a pointguard.

Quite simply, the success of the Rocketsseason may hinge on how well Carpenterand Cecil, a freshman, run the point andwhether or not Boers can consistently hither perimeter shots; that, and how well theincoming junior varsity players can get ac-climated to playing at the varsity level.

    Head Coach: Drew Davie, third seasonLast Season: 0-21 (0-14 TAAC)Key Players: Dylan Buckley, SG, 5-11;

Dominic Manuella, PG, 5-9; ChanceMackall, PF, 6-3; Connor Lenthe, SG, 5-6;Caleb Gerber, SF, 6-1.

Outlook: Here's the bad news: The Lak-ers lose Caleb Helline, their top scorer(17.7 ppg; 8.0 rpg) from last season anda rst-team Toledo Area Athletic Confer-ence selection, as well as Dalton Chap-man (10.3 ppg; 3.7 rpg). The good news, however, is that the team returns severalkey players, among them Dylan Buckley,Chance Mackall and Dominic Manuella, giving Danbury hope that this can be apromising season.

For head coach Drew Davie, now in histhird season at the helm, he is hoping thathis young team can rely on three returninglettermen, Dylan Buckley, Chance Mackalland Dominic Manuella to help lead theway.

This year's team is very young, as weonly have two seniors and two juniors thatare healthy, Davie said. With a lack of ex-perience at the varsity level, this team willhave to grow up fast. Chance, Dylan andDominic played a lot of minutes for us lastseason at the varsity level and we look forthem to be the catalysts for this team.

Buckley, a 5-11 shooting guard, averaged4.4 points last season and will be looked tohelp supplant some of the scoring left by

Helline's graduation. Mackall, a 6-3 powerforward, averaged 3.7 points and 5.1 re-bounds last season and will be expected toman the post and serve as the team's insidepresence. Manuella, the point guard, willbe faced with the task of running the of-

fense. Should these three players performwell this season, there is reason to believethat this year's team could compete in theTAAC. For that to become a reality, sopho-more Caleb Gerber, a 6-1 small forward, and freshman Connor Lenthe, a 5-6 shoot-ing guard, must help complement the of-fensive attack and play good, hard-noseddefense.

Davie is looking for his team to focus ontwo specic things: (1) working relentless-ly on the defensive end to make things dif-cult on their opponents; and (2) limitingtheir turnovers.

Davie was pleased with the commitmentshown by his players in terms of their off-season work ethic and is hopeful that is

can translate to some success on the bas-ketball court.

Those (athletes) that are involved withmultiple sports worked hard in the offsea-son with each sport they were committedto, he said. Those athletes that did notplay fall sports conditioned and participat-ed in open gyms all summer and fall. Weare excited of the commitment that thosegentlemen have shown both in the weightroom and gym. As a team, we attended acouple of shootouts this summer and alsotook our varsity and JV teams to the Uni-versity of Findlay Team Camp.

For now, Davie just wants to keep thingssimple.

Our goal this season is to work hard ev-

ery day, both in practices and games, andget better each day that we're together. Wewant to compete and leave it all out on theoor. We (must) work hard, learn fromour mistakes, value every possession andplay good defense.

Head coach Troy Diels, now in his eighthseason at the helm, is hoping that his teamcan bounce back this season.

While it must replace leading scorer AlexGreene, Port Clinton does return a numbero key players, among them wings CarterRumball, Kalib Shiets, Jason Mueller, KyleWilkins and point guard Brock Moore.

Rounding out the nine-man rotation will

be point guard Nathan Stubblefeld, wingDylan Webb and Ian Kyle and Chris Stokesin the post.

We have nine guys (in our rotation)right now, Diels said. I can see any one othose guys starting. With that being said, its also a blessing (because) we have nineguys we eel comortable with.

Port Clinton, which is used to running toa hal-court oense, will likely be a team

that eatures more o an up-and-downtempo in an eort to take advantage o itsquickness.

We are quite a bit dierent team thanwhat Ive coached since Ive been here,Diels said. We have some increased quick-ness on our team so were going to try andmake that be one o our strengths. Weregoing to try and play up to that. We have

an overall lack o size. The only thing weve talked about as ateam thus ar is becoming better each day,he continued. We dont want to take anysteps backwards. We want to be very con-ditioned. Thats something thats impor-tant. Weve been pretty hal-court oriented(in the past).

Hopeully our deense will create thingsor us; well probably be a little more up-

tempo. The media and the coaches picked Per-

kins and Huron to fnish frst and second, respectively, in the Sandusky Bay Coner-ence this season, exactly where they werelast season.

On paper, Perkins and Huron are prettytalented, Diels said. They not only havesome outstanding individual players, but

they have some depth. Those two teamsare the class o the conerence. Everybodyelse is pretty even. There are going to besome pretty good battles in the SBC. Idont know i anyone (other than Perkinsand Huron) will get into the top-two.

When asked what it will take or his teamto be successul this season, Diels was suc-cinct, saying, We (must) deend and shootthe ball well.

    5-8 PG Paige Culver; 5-2 PG Kennedy Gulas; 5-6 W Madi-son Burris; 5-5 W Kristen Wood; 5-7 W Marissa Day

Outlook: In the 2011-12 season, the Port Clinton Lady

'Skins accomplished a lot. They won 13 games, nishedfourth in the Sandusky Bay Conference, one of northwestOhio's toughest conferences, and moved closer to estab-lishing themselves as one of the top teams in the league.

However, losing ve key players from last year's squad,Laura Puffenberger, Meigan Day, Kenzie Payne, Alex Ste-phenson and Sam Mizener, leaves the team with voids atpoint guard and the wing positions. On the bright side,Port Clinton's top-two scorers and rebounders from lastseason, juniors Hope Thorbahn and Tiffany Colston, re-turn. Colston, who stands 5-10, averaged 13.8 points and8.7 rebounds last season and Thorbahn, who is also 5-10,was just behind her, nishing with 13.2 points and 8.5rebounds, performances that were good enough to earnboth second-team honors at the league and district lev-els.

Despite losing ve seniors, head coach Toby Bickel is op-

timistic that his club can compete with the likes of Clyde, one of the state's best programs, and Perkins. He's notalone, seeing as the Lady 'Skins were picked third by thecoaches and fourth by the media in the preseason polls.

Obviously Clyde is the cream of the crop and Perkinsis going to be very good, Bickel said. I think we can winsome games in the league, but there are also some teamsthat are going to be pretty good. It's all going to have toplay out.

There are two reasons for Bickel's optimism: (1) he hasplenty of faith in Colston and Thorbahn, two versatileplayers, and (2) believes that his younger players who haveseen limited varsity action in the past will ll in nicely.

We have to have some kids with no varsity experiencestep up and play well, he said. Hope is playing the tworight now, I can move her all over the oor. She can move

where need be. And Tiffany is going to start more in thepost. Both of them can move to a lot of different spots. They're both versatile and we'll put them in di
