Texas State Council Convention
The 107th Annual Convention of the Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus is history. You could
see a collective sigh of relieve from the various State Convention Committee members, but especially
from Dallas Diocesan Deputy Roger Scott and Dallas Diocesan Chapter President Pat Conway. These two
brothers were the co-chairs for this year's convention at the Dallas Sheraton Downtown. Of course, they
would be the first to say that the convention was the result of a lot of hard work by many of our Brothers
and their ladies. All one had to do was look at the number of Kelly green shirts and you got a quick idea
of the involvement of volunteers required for such an event. I would certainly be remiss if I didn't
mention the number of volunteers from the Lumen Christi Council and Ladies Auxiliary of Lumen Christi
that helped out with the various events but especially the Country Store.
The first day of convention activities just happened to be
Friday the 13th. However, things went relatively well. The day
was started with the State Golf Tournament at Eastern Hills
Country Club. Registration for attendees also started, which
meant there was a brisk business at the Country Store with
buyers and lookers being helped by the many volunteers. Our
pastor Bishop Mark Seitz and parochial vicar Father Peter
Chinnappan attended the clergy seminar and luncheon. It was
ironic that as Father Peter and I got out of the car Dallas
Diocesan Director of Vocations Father Rudy Garcia and
Redemptoris Mater seminarian Samuel Martinez, who is also a
Lumen Christi Council
member, greeted us.
Shortly thereafter,
another Lumen Christi
Council member and
seminarian Tymoteusz
“Tymo” Ksiazkiewicz
joined us. The afternoon
was the time for many of
the convention related
committees to meet.

Grand Knight’s message
Brothers,
It is hard to believe that it has been almost a year since I first
became Grand Knight of our Council. I have likened it to trying to
take a drink of water from a fire hose. I want to thank everyone
for his or her help and understanding as I have gone through my
on-the-job training. Our past Grand Knight, Chris Diaz, has been
a tremendous help to me this year. I am also 100% sure that I
underestimated the time commitment required. I wanted to take
this time to thank everyone for all your hard work during this
fraternal year that is fast coming to a close. I want to especially
thank all those who served this year as Officers, Directors, and
Event Chairman for all your hard work. I also want to thank those
that have already stepped up to be Officers and Directors for the coming fraternal year. We still have
some appointed positions that are open, so feel free to contact me if you have "The Passion To Serve".
Our Officers for the 2011 - 2012 fraternal year are as follows:
Grand Knight - Jack Ayers
Deputy Grand Knight - Gerry Rice
Chancellor - Mike Greene
Financial Secretary - Mike Riley (second year of a three year
term)*
Treasurer - Jeff Stuart
Recorder - Bob Pitts
Advocate - Vic Owen
Warden - Stan Tax
Inside Guards - John Arciniega and Ron Schott
Outside Guards - Roger Klotz and Steve Trax
3 Year Trustee - Len Kiefel (first year of a three year term)
2 Year Trustee - Chris Diaz (second year of a three year term)
1 Year Trustee - Bob Weaver (third year of a three year term)
* This position is appointed by the Grand Knight and Trustees,
and is approved by Supreme for a three-year term.
I would be remiss if I didn't say thanks to everyone for his or her tireless work on the 2011 Texas State
Council Knights of Columbus convention. I thought everything was done first class. In a recent discussion
with Convention Co-chairman Pat Conway, he said he has heard nothing but positive comments on the
events associated with the convention. Thank you for all your hard work!
Pray for our clergy, our seminarians, for all religious and for an increase in vocations to the
religious life.
Vivat Jesus!

Family of the Month
Helen and Larry Brennan are involved in many activities at
All Saints. Helen is President of the All Saints Women's
Organization and is involved with the Ladies Auxiliary of
Lumen Christi. She is always around and willing to help in
the many activities at our church. Larry serves as
Membership Director for the Council and spends many hours
attending exemplifications as well as Admissions Committee
interviews. He can usually be found at Pancake Breakfasts
and Golden Saints Luncheons, as well as Sunday Morning
Fellowship. Their involvement at our parish earned them
Family of the Month for April 2011.
Knight of the Month
Our Knight of the Month for April 2011 can usually be found
around the All Saints facilities almost every day of the week.
He has a deep-rooted dedication to serving the spiritual
needs of our parish. He is always offering encouraging
words to his brother Knights and is not afraid to ask them to
help with his special projects. One such project was the
revival of the First Thursday Rosary and Adoration for
Vocations. Attendance had slipped and he was intent on
getting more parishioners to attend this event. He has
worked hard to grow the attendance at this monthly event.
For this and all he does at All Saints, Father Peter Chinnappan is our Knight of the Month.
Council Programs
Golden Saints
On May 18, the Knights and Ladies from St. Joseph Circle
served a meal prepared by our caterer, Greg Draxler. We
prepared the salads and plates for about 67 All Saints
Seniors. Those involved were Bernie Crotty, Jack Ayers,
Larry Brennan, Rex Phillips, John & Barb Meyer, Jim &
Shirley Sammons, Larry Milliken, and Vic Weis. All were Safe
Environment Certified. Thank you for all of your help. We
will do it again next month on June 15.

Pancake Breakfast
As predicted, turnout in May was not as good as usual. The Parish Picnic and Confirmation Mass on
Saturday had an adverse effect on attendance numbers. This coming month will feature French Toast as
an optional main course. It will be held a week early (June 12) due to Father's Day.

your assistance in doing prep work on Friday. Thanks to
those who showed between 7 and 8, like John Leffingwell, Ed
Munno, Bob Weaver, Al Steindorf, Stan Schwieterman, Roger
Klotz, Bob Pitts and Gabby! Folks, we really need to have
more people at the Church between 7 and 8 to have food
ready after the 7:45 Mass.

Texas State Council Convention (continued
from page 1)
The day was topped off by the BBQ dinner, dance lessons,
and concert with Kipp Brennan of Arlington opening for Dallas
native Steve Holy. Before calling it a day we attended a special reception for Steve Holy courtesy of
Brother Doyle Kitchen. His company, Information Processing Corporation, was one of the convention
sponsors.
The Opening mass of the convention got things started bright and early on Saturday morning with Texas
State Chaplain Bishop Kevin Farrell presiding. Six other Texas Bishops concelebrated the mass. There
was an honor guard of more than 70 members from various Assembly Color Corps for this event. The
Lumen Christi Council was well represented at the Mass by Brothers that are members of the Christopher
Columbus Assembly Color Corps. We even had a Color Corps member from one of the Oklahoma
Assemblies join the honor guard for the Mass, in addition to Vice-Supreme Master of Our Lady of
Guadalupe Province, Paul Weigl, Past State Deputy of Oklahoma. Current Texas State Deputy Anton
“Tony” Herreth conducted the business sessions. The Lumen Christi Council is a member of District 83
and for some reason we were seated in the first row directly in front of the podium. Many of us wondered
what trouble our District Deputy, Roy Rabenaldt, had gotten himself into that had us on the front row. We
do know that immediate Past State Deputy and current Supreme Director Javier Martinez let Roy know
that he had both his eyes on him. That is another story, and I will let Roy explain that to you.
The general business meeting was adjourned, and we went to our various caucus meetings to elect
delegates to the Supreme Convention. This is the first year that the Dallas Diocese was in a caucus by
itself. Marce Tebbe was elected as delegate for this convention. He is a member of Holy Spirit parish in
Duncanville and has held numerous local and State positions. David Carr the District 81 Deputy was
selected as alternate should Marce not be able to attend. David attends Prince of Peace parish in Plano
and has also been very active in local activities. The evening concluded with the State Banquet. Daniel
Cardinal DiNardo of the Galveston-Houston Diocese joined us
for the event at which Bishop Seitz gave the Invocation. State
Deputy Tony Herreth did something unique to try to conserve
time with the introduction of the various dignitaries on the dais.
He asked for a single clap for each as they were introduced.
He first introduced all the dignitaries in the second row, and
then proceeded to those in the first row starting on the his far
left as he faced his audience. He then introduced those to his
right starting with the furthest away and finishing with Cardinal
DiNardo. I am sure you can understand that the rule of a
single clap was broken by the standing ovation given His
Eminence. The keynote address was delivered by Supreme

Illuminating the Faith Community of All Saints Catholic Church, Dallas, Texas Page 5 Director Javier Martinez, and Cardinal DiNardo also had "a few remarks" for his Brother Knights.
However, it was singer, composer Raquel Ramirez that stole the show performing her song "My Passion to
Serve," which is the motto selected by Tony Herreth for his tenure as State Deputy. Tony noted that he
asked Raquel to compose the song when he was elected to office. It was only later that he found out that
Raquel had been diagnosed with cancer, which she has beaten. With the conclusion of the formal
program, it was off to the hospitality suites for some socializing.
On Sunday morning, Cardinal DiNardo celebrated the annual memorial Mass for all Brothers that have
passed, but especially those who died during the last fraternal year. Not only had he given us some great
remarks on Saturday evening but his homily on Good Shepherd Sunday really got you thinking. The love
they have for their Brother Knights and their families was evident from his homily and that of Bishop
Farrell on Saturday. Of course, the Color Corps had to outdo themselves by having close to 90 members
in the honor guard for this Mass. After Mass, it was back to the general business session, at which the
current state officers were selected to return for a second term. Unfortunately, our State Warden Joseph
Maresca had passed during the current fraternal year, so it was up to the delegates to select a new State
Warden. Lumen Christi Council member Roger Scott nominated Mark Evans of the Tyler Diocese. Since
there were no further nominations from the floor, Mark was elected by acclamation. One final item
remained and Past State Deputy Larry Zapalac invited all the delegates to convene starting April 27, 2012
in Houston for the 108th Convention of the Texas State Council of the Knights of Columbus. Shortly before
11:30 am, on Sunday, May 15, State Deputy Tony Herreth adjourned the 107th Convention of the Texas
State Council of the Knights of Columbus.
Of course, the work was not over, especially for the Lumen Christi Council, as the job of breaking down
the Country Store and transporting the unsold merchandise that remained. My thanks to all those
members of our Council and the Ladies Auxiliary that helped with the various convention activities. Your
hard work and dedication made this a very special convention for those in attendance!

Pro-Life
We have now entered the “no scheduled events” time of the year in the Pro-Life cycle. As always, we
continue with the weekly Rosary to End Abortion – come on out and join us on Saturday. It is listed every
week in Doyle’s weekly email.
We found an interesting article we would like to share: The "Wife" Advertisement from Curate's Diary,
3/10, By Fr. T. Doyle.
“Back in 1920, a 43 year-old German policeman was getting concerned that he had not met the right
woman to marry. In desperation, he placed the following advertisement in the newspapers.
“Middle-ranking civil servant, single, Catholic, 43, immaculate past, from the country, is looking for a good
Catholic, pure girl who can cook well, tackle all household chores, with a talent for sewing and
homemaking, with a view to marriage as soon as possible – fortune desirable, but not a precondition.
“A woman named Maria Peintner answered the ad. She was 36 years-old, a trained cook, and had been
born "out of wedlock."
“While carrying her, her mother, whom it is suggested was also born "out of wedlock," spent some time in
a home for pregnant girls. The mother later married a baker name Rieger, with whom she had five more
daughters.
“Maria did not have a fortune, but she herself was a treasure, and they married four months later. In
spite of their somewhat advanced years, they had three children: two boys and a girl. The youngest child
received the same name as his father: Joseph Ratzinger, better known today as Pope Benedict XVI.
“After his election, someone dug up the "wife-wanted" advertisement and showed it to the Pope, who of
course, smiled. They were the best of parents to their children.
2011 - 2012 Texas State Council Officers
State Chaplain - The Most Reverend Kevin J. Farrell, D.D. Bishop of Dallas
Associate State Chaplain - Reverend Jack Whitley
State Deputy - Tony Herreth
State Secretary - Jim Collins
State Treasurer - Terry Simonton
State Advocate - Douglas E. Oldmixon
State Warden - Mark Evans
Supreme Director and Immediate Past State Deputy - Javier S. Martinez
Illuminating the Faith Community of All Saints Catholic Church, Dallas, Texas Page 7 “The important thing is that he knew his parents really loved each other, and the children, very much.
Pope Benedict often speaks about that love. In fact, his first encyclical is entitled, "God is Love," and it
describes marriage as the preeminent figure of God's love for us.
“Thus, know that, even being illegitimate, every child is a gift.”

Membership
It’s that time of the year again. We are in the stretch run for the conclusion of another highly successful
fraternal year. Our successful Knights of Columbus Council has once again met its goal in new
membership. As we prepare to embark on a new fraternal year for our Lumen Christi Council 13520, I
believe it is most appropriate at this time to once again express my and the membership teams thanks for
all of the great support we received from other members such as yourself over the past year. As I wrap-
up the Recruitment Corner for this year, I do so with a feeling of gratitude not only to the other members
of the Council membership team but also to each of the very fine Knights I have had the privilege of
meeting, working with and getting to know over this past year. I have certainly enjoyed this past year. I
have decided to step down as Membership Director to pursue other things and enjoy more time with my
family. The membership program will be in the very capable hands of John Doyle and I know you will
support John and his team with the same gusto as he moves to continue the effort to grow our council.
Illuminating the Faith Community of All Saints Catholic Church, Dallas, Texas Page 9 Once again, thank you for your support over the last two years.
I look forward to working with each of you on other projects in
the coming year.

banquet there will be Corporate Communion at the 5:00 pm Mass in the church. All members are invited,
and reservations are necessary.
We are looking for a chair for the 2012 Ladies Morning of Reflection. Several people have volunteered to
help, but we do need a chair, as it is the Ladies Auxiliary turn to be in charge. If you are interested,
please call Mary Jayne Ringham at 972-699-0562. Pat Weaver reported that the expense report for the
2011 Day of Reflection is finished. Total expenses for event were $564.67, which was split evenly

At our business meeting in April, we had a very
informative talk by Vera Richard on the St. Vincent de Paul
Society. Vera is a member of the Ladies Auxiliary and
President of All Saint’s St. Vincent de Paul Society. In
May, following the monthly business meeting and the
election of officers, we had game night. Barbara Burbey
and Addie Phillips led us in card Bingo. It was a fun
evening as we tried to keep our hearts, diamonds, clubs,
and spades straight.
