Classrooms Outdoors? By Zaiden J.

Do you think having a learning environment outdoors can have a positive effect on child development? Well, in 2012, select schools in London, UK, celebrated the outdoor classroom. Now the outdoor classroom is implemented for almost half a million children in 52 countries. During this school year, the next outdoor classrooms are October 12, 2017, and May 17, 2018. Many people have seen the effects on children when they learn in an outdoor environment. Due to the fact that children make better connections and memories in an outdoor environment, we want to encourage children to learn there. Children also learn life skills such as teamwork, communication, and it gives children the opportunity to think independently. Many teachers and administrators are finding it hard to connect the outdoor classroom and their regular everyday curriculum. They have issues trying to use outdoor physical activity and getting children to pay attention and not get distracted. So, they turn to having children just sit down and learn as if they were inside but that isn’t the goal. The goal is the connect the outdoors and learn to get children to enjoy learning. If you are a science teacher, some ideas might be analyzing and breaking down nature which would require children to move. If you are a language arts teacher some ideas might be having students find something they can use to write with. Math teachers can use symmetry and many other mathematical functions in nature. The outdoor classroom will be a wonderful experience for children because they will enjoy learning. Hopefully, if the response from students and teachers is positive then we can use the classroom more often. See https://outdoorclassroomday.com/about/ for more information and ideas.

Special Edition iPhone X By Nicole L.

For the 10th anniversary of the iPhone, Apple came out with a special edition, iPhone X. There are a lot of new features that make this phone different from all the others. The iPhone X has Face ID to unlock your phone, a better camera, an edge-to-edge OLED screen, wireless charging, and a glass back of the phone. One of the new features, Face ID, is where the phone scans your face instead of using a password or fingerprint to unlock the phone. With this upgrade, many people are worried about someone being able to use a picture to unlock your phone. Face ID won’t work unless it senses motion and you are directly looking into the camera, so you are unable to unlock the phone unless it’s your own face. The True Depth camera that makes the Face ID work helped create 3D emojis called animoji. The animoji is able to copy all of your facial expressions and send them to a person through text. Apples True Depth also gives you the option to switch the lighting of the photo you’re taking. Although the new iPhone 8 and 8+ are less expensive phones, it wouldn’t come along with the redesign of the iPhone X. Since this is such a high end phone, the price starts out at $999. You can preorder the phone beginning October 27.

The Xbox S Mess By Timothy M.

The Xbox One S, what a console! The Xbox One S is a smaller version of the original Xbox One. People say this one can store more, and has better gameplay better graphics, more data space and more games. The white design of the Xbox One S is referencing the white design of the Xbox 360, the console that came out before the one prior to the newest model. This console was released back in 2013. It wasn't brought to stores until 2016. The Xbox One S costs $350 which is expensive but, is it really worth it? The ratings on the console are pretty bad because of how much it lags and crashes. As reported, the controllers easily break, and the headphone jack always gets broken. In my opinion, I wouldn’t mind this stuff. This is because the controllers aren't that expensive and can be easily replaced. This console does sometimes produce good and exclusive games that other consoles like the Wii U and the playstation 4 don’t have. These are games like Forza and Hello Neighbor.

! It seems like a new console comes out every few years. If you don't like the current one, just wait, a newer and more powerful one is just waiting to be released.

Wild Fires in Montana By Milton K.

Montana and other states around it have been burning. The fires started on July 21, 2017, and have spread over 155,000 acres. The reason why there are so many fires is because Montana has had a very bad drought this past summer. Recently the fires have moved from Montana to Idaho, Washington, Oregon, and California. Some of the fires have stopped in Montana because recently it has been snowing. This is a big relief for Montana because they have had fires for over two months.

In 2017 there have been over 49,400 wildfires and over 8.4 million acres of land have been burned. Normally, 3 million acres burn every year. The forest service has spent over 3 million dollars fighting the fires. The Department of Agriculture said that 2017 has been the most expensive wildfire season in American history.

Nigeria Builds the Biggest Power Plant in the Country!

By Elaina N.

! The 3,050 megawatts of hydroelectric machinery that will produce power for Nigerians is being delivered by the Chinese state-owned construction firms. The plant will be in Tariba. There will be four dams that will be 50 to 150 meters tall. This project will take around six years to complete. The hydropower plant has originally been under construction for over thirty years and still hasn’t made much improvement. In Africa over 40% of Nigerians go without electricity. The country is trying to find a way to not use oil to generate power. Hydropower is an amazing alternative and healthier for the environment. There are risks that the government and community would have to accept to continue with this project. "If the Mambila dam project does continue, it could mean disastrous environmental and social impacts for those already living in poverty along the banks of the Benue River," told by NGO International Rivers. "There is strong competition for land in Taraba state, which regularly sees outbreaks of ethno-religious violence," says Elizabeth Donnelly. Although about 100,000 people would have to move to another area, the government has promised to get them a suitable place to live.

How to Concentrate Better on Schoolwork

By Sierra H. Are you struggling to get good grades or concentrate on schoolwork? Well, don’t feel like you can't ever pass a test or get a good grade. Below are a few tips that will help you pass a test and maybe get Honor Roll. 1. Chew gum: Studies have shown that chewing gum or eating a snack can help you concentrate on studying or doing work. If you can’t eat, then chewing gum will also help you concentrate. 2. Take A 5 Minute Break: No one wants to constantly work! By taking short breaks, you will be able to work, but also get a break. But when you take a break, doing something that is active will help you. Take a short walk, straighten up your room, or do some jumping jacks. 3. Listen To Music: Listening to music can help you concentrate while doing your work. If you put on fast-paced music though, then that might break your concentration, so nature sounds or music without lyrics will help you concentrate. 4. Drawing or doodling: If you have a project that has to do with drawing or doing a poster then this is a great tip for you! Randomly drawing things can help you expand or get ideas for your project. Or if you don't have a project that doesn't involve drawing, maybe drawing will help you get ideas to write. 5. Stay Positive Saying that you can’t do something will only make you less likely to be able to get it done. So if you say that you can do it or just don't say anything at all then you are most likely to get the task done. “The power to concentrate was the most important thing. Living without the power would be like opening one's eyes and not seeing anything.” -Haruki Murakami Use these tips to help you improve your concentration.

Advice for Sports Tryouts By Ashley S.

Kids often get nervous about sports tryouts, so take some advice and it should help you be prepared! 1.Let go of the fear: In sports, athletes often are afraid of getting hurt, but if you just don’t think about it and let go of your fear, you will not be afraid. Kids may have more experience than you in something, but it does not mean you should be afraid. 2.Play hard, and don’t hold back: Be confident in yourself and do not hold back. Always try your best and let your skills do the work. Give it all you got in that short time. 3.Don’t be intimidated: Often people run away from people who are bigger and taller than they are. That does not mean anything though. For an example, in soccer, sometimes people do not charge the ball because they are scared that they are going to get hurt. Just because someone is big, does not necessarily mean they are good. Even if they are good, that does not mean you are not. So, do not hide the power because someone is bigger than you. Size does not matter. 4.Don’t try so hard to be perfect: Do not focus on doing everything right. The more you focus on doing everything perfectly, the more you will mess up. Sometimes when people are playing in soccer they think too much about kicking the ball the right way and then mess up. Mistakes in sports often happen, but they do not happen as often if you do not overthink. 5.Focus on the process, not the results: Some kids try too hard to do everything right, with so much information going through their heads. People think “If I do not do this or that, so and so will get mad at me.” Or “maybe the coach will sit me.” Do not think like that; just focus on what you are doing. Do not focus on the results so much and focus more on being the best player at that moment. So, if you have a sports tryout coming up soon, good luck, try your best, and follow the advice!

Fall Out Boy’s fan club is called the Overcast Kids, and they’ve been supportive of the band since it began. Fall Out Boy took a hiatus starting in 2009 and ending in 2012. The first album to be released after their hiatus was titled Save Rock and Roll. Over time, as members have come and gone, rejoined or moved on, and some never left, but Fall Out Boy has been around for sixteen years.

Chromebooks in Ogdensburg School By Dominick D.

This year Ogdensburg School started a 1 :1 in i t ia t i ve w i th Chromebooks . A Chromebook is a computer and the students in grades 4 through 8 are carrying them around. Students are using them in classes to take notes, do research, or do online work. F o r e x a m p l e , s t u d e n t s h a v e u s e d Chromebooks to take a SGO assessment. The Chromebooks a re use fu l because now the students don't always have to write everything down on paper. Also, in Google Docs, everything will save on the computer and it will be saved every 2 seconds.

Chromebooks are inexpensive and they are made to last. Mrs. Reeth has spent a good amount of time with the students telling them how to handle the Chromebooks. They need to be held with two hands and not balanced on top of books or binders.

In my opinion, Chromebooks are better for learning. You don't always have to use a dictionary to lookup a word because you can just look it up online. If you have to do an assignment, you can do it online. When the teacher says you need to do work, when you have a Chromebook you can type it out, not just write it on paper all the time. Mrs. Reeth promises this year will be easier because we have the Chromebooks. Hopefully, the Internet won’t go down!

The Life of Andre J. By Milton K.

Andre J. could be considered one of the most popular kids in Ogdensburg School. Andre came to our school from Paterson in 2013 and went into fourth grade. He is kind, generous, and helpful. One of Andre's favorite things to do in his free time is to play sports. His favorite sport to play is basketball. He started playing in first grade and now has gained a lot of skills. Andre also played basketball for the school his 6th grade year and is planning to play for his 7th and 8th grade years, too. Ogdensburg School is thankful to have Andre on the team and is looking forward to him playing on the team for the next two years. When Andre gets older he wants to be a basketball player. Also, in Andre's free time he likes to play Madden and NBA 2K18 on the Xbox One. His favorite teacher is Mr.Horyak because gym is his favorite subject. For the last four years that Andre has been here he said that this year is his best year so far. He likes this year because he has all of his favorite teachers and classes. Andre J. has always been making new friends and wants to make more in our school.

Student Life in Pre-k and Kindergarten By Laura S.

This month, our newspaper is featuring three classes. Mrs. Carr ’s Pre-K, Ms. Winton's Kindergarten, and Mrs. Byrne’s Kindergarten will be featured. Each teacher answered five questions about the student life which will now be shared with you. Mrs. Carr is enjoying her first year with preschool children. This month she hopes to learn about the number 3 and sort objects in math. By the end of the year, Mrs. Carr wants her class to know their letters and numbers, and for them to always do their best. In class, one of the books they read was the Very Hungry Caterpillar. Each day, the class dances and listens to music, and they are learning to be good listeners and follow rules throughout the activities. At the beginning of October, this class will taste red, green, and yellow apples, and then vote for the apple they like the best. Ms. Winton loves to teach kindergarten! In math class, they are learning to count and write the numbers 0-5. Ms.Winton wants her children to develop a love of reading and for them to always try their best. They are reading The Dot by Peter Reynolds and are mixing colors to go along with the The Dot story. Another activity is hand washing. Two of the favorite things Miss Winton is doing with her class is painting with apples, and measuring and weighing pumpkins to see if they sink or float. Mrs. Byrne is looking forward to a great first year in kindergarten. Her class, like Ms. Winton’s is also learning how to read and write numbers 0-5. Mrs. Byrne wants all of her children to know how to express their thoughts while they write. This class is reading The Dot, Chicka Chicka Boom Boom, and Parts of an Apple. Some of the activities this class is doing is learning about apples, how to visualize and predict, the letters c,o,a, and how to retell stories. With this classroom, Mrs. Byrne likes to make pumpkin, apple, and leaf projects.

Do School Dress Codes End Up Body Shaming Girls? By Nicole L.

Girls of all ages should have the right to feel happy and comfortable in their own bodies, but when it comes to school dress codes, it’s a different story. By telling young girls that they have to change into something else because their clothes are supposedly distracting others or that “boys will be boys,” is teaching them that they are meant to hide their bodies.

Throughout the school year (especially in the hotter weather), students are getting dresscoded left and right. By interrupting a girl’s day to tell her that her shorts are too short, you can see her shoulders, or even a small part of her stomach, is taking away from her learning time and upsetting her. Strict dress codes show girls that they should be “ashamed” for showing and being confident with their bodies.

Students across the world are tired of feeling like they’re being body shamed and being told they are distractions at school. If schools across the world really want to teach respect, instead of dress coding girls, they should teach males that it’s not acceptable to blame or become distracted by a girl for what she’s wearing.

ShadowhuntersBy Gia B.Rated TV-14

Have you ever been really bored and needed something new to watch? Now you do! Shadowhunters is a television show on Freeform that is based in the Shadowhunters book series by Cassandra Clare. The main characters are Clary Fairchild (Kat McNamara ) , Jace Way land (Domin i c Sherwood) , A lec L ightwood (Mat thew Daddario), Isabelle “Izzy” Lightwood (Emeraude Toubia), Magnus Bane (Harry Shum Jr.), and Valentine Morgenstern (Alan Vancamp). In the show, the characters get special powers by drawing runes on their skin. Humans can’t see t h e i r w o r l d b e c a u s e t h e y a r e n o t Shadowhunters. I think that Shadowhunters is the best show that was ever created. I think this because within the first ten minutes of the first episode, I fell in love with the show’s storyline because of the supernatural feel it has to it. Personally, my favorite characters are Magnus Bane and Alec Lightwood because Alec is so protective of everyone he cares about and Magnus doesn’t care what anyone thinks and I love that in someone. So just watch the show, or if you don’t want to watch the whole thing, just watch S1 E12 (or at least skip forward to about 45:00-30:00 and watch from there) to see the main reason I love these two characters. I really enjoy watching this show. I watch my favorite episodes whenever I want to watch tv or just if I’m bored and I have a spare moment. Shadowhunters is honestly one of the best shows to ever exist, so give it a try and see how you like it.

I took my three year old to the film festival to see Trolls and she loved it and so did I. There are lots of bright colors and singing. There are a couple scenes that can be scary to some children, but are short and not that bad compared to many other animation movies. It has a great moral and young kids can understand the storyline. This movie will have you and your kids singing and dancing along. What girl isn't going to love a Pink Princess.”- Cameron H.

“Exuberant, busy and sometimes funny, DreamWorks Animation's "Trolls" is determined to amuse.” - Andy Webster, NY Times Top Critic”

“You'd be hard-pressed to keep from smiling throughout the trippy dance sequences and clever banter in this feel-good confection.”- Brian Truitt, USA Today Top Critic

Monkey Selfie By Tim M.

A macaque, (a breed of monkey), named Naruto was in the Jungles of Indonesia. Suddenly, the monkey came across a photographer, took his camera, and snapped a photo. Or that's at least what people think. Nobody knows who took the photo for sure, but some people think it was the photographer, but others think that Naruto took the picture. Later on PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) filed a lawsuit against the man who claimed the monkey took the selfie manually.PETA filed the lawsuit in 2015. PETA thinks that making nonhuman animals take photos of themselves exposes animals to technology is wrong. When people observed the photo, they were surprised on how the monkey knew how to smile while taking the picture.

PETA attempted to take the picture from the photographer because animals do not have the right to copyright. People wanted to take the photo and use it to their advantage. PETA really wants the monkey to have the copyright to gain ownership. An agreement was reached. The photographer will pay 25 % of the revenue of the photo will go to the macaque protected habitat. People ask, “Should a Monkey own a copyright?”. Many say no, while many also say yes. In my opinion, I think they should because, when do you see a monkey accurately take a selfie like a human? http://www.npr.org/sections/thetwo-way/2017/09/12/550417823/-animal-rights-advocates-photographer-compromise-over-ownership-of-monkey-selfie

Healthy Snacks on the GO ! By Andre J.

Active people are always looking for a fast way to get energy but also to have something nutritious. One healthy snack for people who play sports could be trail mix that includes almonds and raisins. This is a easy snack to make at home and has raisins that have sugar for energy and nuts for the nutrition that that people need before games or even after the game.

If you like vegetables, you can eat for a quick crunchy snack but many people don't like vegetables. You can do apples with caramel if vegetables aren't for you. You don't want to just eat something you don't like because it's healthy. You can eat something that's healthy and tastes good, too!

Apples are very nutritious and are a light snack when you're on the go or at a game. They're also very easy to slice up you can make them in your own shapes and sizes. And if you don't like red Apples you might like green apples. Apples have nutritious sugar that people need.

Protein bars now come in many flavors and can be an easy meal on the go. Price can be a factor here though! They can cost a lot.

People who play sports, really need to make sure to eat healthy snacks and keep their body healthy. If you play sports I really recommend looking at more healthy snacks and sharing this with your teammates!

Caramel Apples By Laura S.

When you start picking bushels of apples this fall, use them as a nice crispy snack to start off the season. Imagine making a mouthwatering caramel apple. Once you bite into it, you will taste a delicious crunch of sweetness. Ingredients:

● 1/2 cup butter, cubed ● 2 cups packed brown sugar ● 1 cup light corn syrup ● Dash salt ● 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed

milk ● 1 teaspoon vanilla extract ● 10 to 12 Popsicle sticks ● 10 to 12 medium tart apples, washed and

dried ● 1 cup salted peanuts, chopped

Materials:Candy ThermometerWaxed Paper Directions- In a large saucepan, melt the butter. Next, mix in the brown sugar, corn syrup, and salt. Cook and stir until the mixture comes to a boil about 10-12 minutes. After that, add milk and stir until your candy thermometer reaches 248 degrees. Next, remove the saucepan from the heat and mix vanilla into it. Place your apples on a popsicle stick and put them in caramel, turning to coat with caramel. Lastly, dip the end of the carmel apples in the peanuts and let sit on greased wax paper until it sets. Now, you have a nice crispy snack to enjoy in the fall.

After tasting this caramel apple, I would give it 4 stars. Since it was very crunchy, it lost a star, but it still tasted sweet, and with a little crunchiness, It makes it a great fall snack.
