A Match Day to Remember

Talk about an intense few seconds.

After spending four years in medical school and undergoing several extensive interviews, graduating students from the Amarillo School of Medicine, along with thousands of medical students across the country, simultaneously ripped open envelopes at 11 a.m. March 17 to find out where they will be spending the next few years of their life.Locally, 32 students participated in the annual Match Day tradition, which is always on the third Thursday of March.

In preparation for this year’s ceremony, the students applied to hospitals and residency programs across the country, selecting the field of medicine they hope to work in and they city where they would like to live. After being interviewed by doctors and program directors, the students created a list ranking their top choices. Meanwhile, residency programs across the nation did the same.

That information was then submitted to a computer program, which matched each student with a medical facility. Those matches were kept confidential until Match Day, which is celebrated in various ways across the country.

At TTUHSC in Amarillo, the students and their families gather on the second floor in Internal Medicine and count down to 11 a.m. They then rip open their envelopes, shouting and laughing as they learn of their assignment.

Soon after, they take part in a toast given by a physician the students choose as an outstanding faculty member.

This year, that honor went to Brian Weis, M.D. But instead of giving your typical toast, Dr. Weis changed things up by singing a song he wrote called, “The Match Day Song.”

You can watch “The Match Day Song” by logging onto www.facebook.com/ttuhscamarillo or you can search for it on YouTube. It’s called the TTUHSC Match Day Song.

An amendment has been proposed to the TTUHSC Staff Senate Constitution and Bylaws, but your vote is needed to approve the revision.

The proposed change would combine the current constitution and bylaws into one succinct document to help alleviate any redun-dancies and streamline articles for easier reference.

According to the existing bylaws, this change must first be approved by TTUHSC staff before it can be implemented.

Congratulations to Kristin Stutz who has been named interim assistant academic dean of education.

Stutz, who has been called the “heart and soul of the Education Office,” will fill the void left by Marita Sheehan, M.D., who retired on Feb. 28.

The proposed revision can be accessed through the TTUHSC announcements page at http://ganglia.ttuhsc.edu/AMAHome.html

Ballots can be cast from now until Tuesday, April 12.

You should have already received an email with instructions on how to vote. If you have not received the email, check your junk mail.If you have any questions, email [email protected].....................................................................

Some big changes are taking place in the Department of Pediatrics.

Todd Bell, M.D., has been selected as interim chair of the department.Dr. Bell will be taking over for Bonna Benja-min, M.D., who is stepping down, effective this summer.

Dr. Benjamin will stay on part time as a pediatric surgeon.

TTUHSC is proud to have two new faculty members on staff.

Jack Waller, M.D., has joined Internal Medi-cine as a part-time associate professor of dermatology, and the Department of Psychia-try will welcome Jave Rush, M.D., on June 1. Rush will serve as clinical associate professor of psychiatry......................................................................

Cast Your Ballot Now

The 32 graduating students of the Class of 2011 were among 47,000 applicants participating in Match Day this year. Of this group, 31 percent will be staying in primary care and 53 percent of the students will complete their first year of residency in our great State of Texas. We will also bring Texas greetings to the states of Missouri, Georgia, Michigan, New Mexico, Pennsylvania, Hawaii and Oklahoma. Students will be going on to complete residencies in all areas of primary care: family medicine, obstetrics/gynecology, pediatrics and internal medicine as well as the specialties of diagnostic radiology, emergency medicine, anesthesiology, plastic surgery, ophthalmol-ogy, orthopedic surgery, neurology and psychiatry. The medical school hosted a luncheon honoring the students for their clinical expertise, research and leadership along with their commitment to humanity and community service. The medical students also recognized outstanding residents, faculty and community members. We congratulate this accom-plished group of soon to be physicians and wish them the best of luck.
