Our Parsha famously opens with a staccato description of Sarah’s age. Instead of simply telling us that Sarah Imeinu passed at 127 years, the Torah gives us a numeric breakdown 100 years, and 20 years, and 7 years – that reads like a mysterious numeric progression. (Or, alternatively, like one of the first-grade arithmetic exercises that I’ve been listening to all week over Zoom…) Our mefarshim rush to interpret the Torah’s strange formulation, and perhaps the most well-known approach is that of Rashi (Bereishis 23:1). Referencing a Medrash Bereishit Rabba, Rashi suggests that the Torah seeks to create a breakdown of Sarah’s life that gives us a better appreciation of the stature of our remarkable first matriarch. At one hundred years, she was as clean from sin as she was at twenty. (The medrash here works under the assumption that twenty is when one is first held truly accountable for sin and punishment. By that assumption, Sarah Imeinu was, by necessity, clean from all sin at the age of twenty. And so, she was at the age of one hundred.) And at the age of twenty she was just as beautiful as she was at the age of seven. Many dispute Rashi’s assertion that this medrash represents the peshat, the plain and straightforward reading, of the passuk for a variety of textual reasons. (See, for example, the comments of the Ramban on the verse, critiquing Rashi’s read of both the passuk and the medrash.) But one question that has bothered me – and, indeed, bothers several of the supercommentaries on Rashi, including the Bartenura, and Re’em – pertains not to the relationship between the medrash and the passuk, but rather to the internal dynamics of the medrash itself. I can understand the medrash’s assertion that Sarah Imeinu lived her whole life as clean from sin as she was at twenty years old; it is a powerful statement about the spiritual character of Sarah. But the assertion that “at twenty she was as beautiful as a seven-year-old” always struck me as strange. If we were asked to identify the pinnacle of man / woman’s physical beauty, most of us would sooner identify the twenty-year-old, living at the height of mankind’s physical maturity and prowess, as the exemplar of human beauty, not the seven-year-old child. Yet, the medrash chooses seven as the height of human beauty, telling us that Sarah had the beauty of seven even at an advanced age. In explaining the unique beauty of the seven-year-old child, perhaps we can suggest that when the medrash describes beauty, “yofi,” it refers not to physical attractiveness in the narrowest sense; indeed, the Gur Aryeh wonders why the medrash deems Sarah’s physical beauty at an advanced age so important in the first place. It rather refers to what our mefarshim describe as “chen,” a kind of natural grace and charm that most of us possess in childhood and childhood only, but Sara Imeinu possessed throughout her life. 100. 20. 7. Our Parsha famously opens with a staccato description of Sarah’s age. Instead of simply telling us that Sarah Imeinu passed at 127 years, the Torah gives us a numeric breakdown – 100

years, and 20 years, and 7 years – that reads like a mysterious numeric progression. (Or, alternatively, like one of the first-grade arithmetic exercises that I’ve been listening to all week over Zoom…) Our mefarshim rush to interpret the Torah’s strange formulation, and perhaps the most well-known approach is that of Rashi (Bereishis 23:1). At one hundred years, she was as clean from sin as she was at twenty. (The medrash here works under the assumption that twenty is when one is first

held truly accountable for sin and punishment. By that assumption, Sarah Imeinu was, by necessity, clean from all sin at the age of twenty. And so, she was at the age of one hundred.) And at the age of twenty she was just as beautiful as she was at the age of seven. This Sunday, October 31, will be the convocation ceremony for the latest מוסמכים from Yeshiva University’s Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary (RIETS), from the 2018 – 2021 classes. The last triennial ceremony was held in 2017 and was supposed to be held again last year but was postponed due to COVID-related logistical challenges.

CBY will be hosting a Shabbaton this week in honor of the occasion, with four distinguished guest speakers from YU (including two familiar CBY faces):

• RIETS Rosh Yeshiva Rabbi Dovid Miller will give the .at the 9:00 minyan in the New Main sanctuary דרשה

• Rabbi Mordy Dubin will speak on the Life and Times of .at the 9:15 minyan in the Old Main Shul שרה אמינו

• Rabbi Avi Hirt will speak on Give and Take: Rethinking the Beneficiary of חסד at the 8:30 Nusach Sefard minyan in the Beis Medrash.

• Rabbi Aryeh Lebowitz, Abraham Arbesfeld Chair of the Director of the Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik Semikhah Program will speak after the 5:30 pm Mincha in the New Main on From the Rabbi's Desk: " חסד When - "רב Kindness Gets Complicated.

This year’s 150 newly ordained rabbis come from all over the US (and internationally), and will be moving on to positions in education, shul pulpits, non-profits and other rabbinic leadership positions around the world. Hundreds of guests are expected, with many more joining online. As has become customary, Congregation Bnai Yeshurun has eight of its sons (and sons-in-law) among this class of מוסמכים, including Rabbis Shai Berman, Mordy Dubin, Yisrael Feld, Avi Hirt, Yehoshua Katz, Dovid Nadel, Yoni Pollok, and Mayer Simcha Stromer. As they go on to start their careers, YU’s new מוסמכים will build on their unique education. Besides intense learning under luminaries of the American rabbinate, RIETS offers its students an enhanced rabbinic professional education program to address the rapidly evolving communal and spiritual needs of today’s Jewish communities.

RIETS students receive training – by both lay and rabbinic experts - in subjects essential to successful public leadership, such as pastoral psychology and public speaking. They’re also exposed to complex contemporary halakhic issues in fields as diverse as bioethics, technology and business in order to prepare them for the real-world challenges and dilemmas they may face from their congregants. As Rabbi Menachem Penner - Max and Marion Grill Dean of RIETS and the Men’s Undergraduate Torah Studies programs at Yeshiva University - noted, “Events of the recent year have made clear the need for rabbinic leadership in times of crisis. RIETS is there to meet that, and other new challenges.” Founded in 1896, RIETS (named for Rav Yitzchok Elchonon Spektor לזצ" who had passed away earlier that year) formally merged with what began (according to official New York State records) as Chebra Machsika Ishiwas Etz Chaim (founded in 1886) in 1915, Yeshiva College opened 14 years later on 186th Street and Amsterdam Avenue. Since then, RIETS has ordained over 3,500 rabbis, and many of its מוסמכים have gone on to some of the most distinguished rabbinic careers all over the world.

The convocation ceremony is scheduled for 1:00 pm this Sunday and will be live streamed at yu.edu/chag

Sarah lived a difficult life. She was orphaned at a young age. She, like her husband Avraham, was willing to give up everything, the entire life she knew in Ur Kasdim, to venture into a new, unknown future upon Hashem’s command of Lech Lecha. She was seized several times by local kings, struggled with infertility and the mockery of her maidservant Hagar, and she dies, according to the medrash, with the realization that her only son, the son she had prayed for for so many years, was to be sacrificed to Hashem.

And, through it all, Sarah Imeinu leads a life of not only the deepest faith and service to Hashem, serving as Avraham’s partner on their joint life mission of spreading monotheistic belief and lovingkindness, but also a childlike innocence and grace that transcended all her life struggles. The chen of a seven-year-old child often stems from simple naivete. They have not yet felt life’s hardships and life’s harsher edges that usually come with age and lived experience. Safe in their sheltered world, they easily adopt an optimistic attitude towards all, providing that natural charm that brightens the world around them. But, for most of us, once the walls of that shelter come down, once we enter adulthood and are exposed to the elements in all their relentless force, we lose that innocence and naivete, and we lose the natural grace and charm that come along with it.

But Sarah indeed managed to transcend. For all the hardship she experienced in life, she still had the natural optimism of youth. She insisted that, even when life is challenging, there is always reason for positivity and hope. After all she had been through in her many years on this earth, she still possessed the chen of her childhood, persisting in the belief that life is essentially good.

And, if Sarah Imenu was able to maintain that child-like chen throughout her life, despite all she experienced, then her example offers room for positivity and hope in our lives as well. Maintaining that chen certainly isn’t easy in life’s darker moments. And few of us can claim, like Sarah, to maintain it for 127 years without fail. But, if we try hard enough, perhaps we can find moments to draw inspiration from our ancient matriarch and rediscover the yofi, chen, and charming optimism of youth.

Weekly Shabbat Announcements October 29-November 5, 2021

Mark your calendars for an informative and intriguing lecture. 7:45 pm in the CBY Social Hall. Tuesday, November 2, יום הרביעי, כ"ח מרחשון

though marking your calendars might not be that straightforward if you were in the vicinity of the International Dateline. The Adult Education Committee has arranged for Rabbi Mordechai Kuber to speak on Crossing the Dateline: A Concise Analysis of the Halachic Dateline.

What day is Shabbat in Japan, Hawaii, Alaska, and Australia? At what point do I cross from one day to the next? May one fly from Asia to the US on Friday or

Sunday? When crossing into “yesterday,” does one pray again? What about tefillin and sefiras ha’omer? What about crossing into “tomorrow”? Rabbi Kuber addresses these and many other fascinating questions in his recently published, three volume set Crossing the Dateline.

Rabbi Kuber studied in Yeshivas Ner Yisrael in Baltimore, where he received semicha from the Rosh Hayeshivah, Rav Yaakov Yitzchak Halevi Ruderman zt"l. He served as Rav of Khal Adath Yeshurun of Paramus, NJ, and then made aliyah with his family in the summer of 5759 and settled in Telz-

Stone. Rabbi Kuber currently serves as Rav of Kehilas Nachalas Tzvi Ohel Avraham in Telz-Stone, studies in the Mir Yeshiva in Yerushalayim, teaches, fields questions about kashrus, and frequently travels to the Far East. He enjoys investigating the technical and scientific aspects of contemporary halachic issues. Thank you to our co-sponsor Anne and Jerry Samet, in memory of Rabbi Kuber and Anne Samet’s father and grandfather, ז״ל אברהם, בן מנדל מנחם

A Mini-Vort from the Szafranski Table to Yours!

At the end of the parsha which relates the death and burial of Sarah Imeinu, the Ramban (23:19) seems to write two contradictory things. On the one hand, he says that the story of her death was written: "להודיע חסדי השם עם אברהם שהיה נשיא

"ם היו קוראין לו "אדונילהים... וכל הע-א ... “To inform us of HaShem’s kindnesses to Avraham… Avraham was regarded as a prince of HaShem, and each individual as well as all the people called him “my lord”...” On the other hand, Ramban writes that the story was written because:

"שגם זה מן הנסיונות של אברהם שבקש מקום לקבור את שרה ולא מצא

"עד שקנה אותו ... “This was also one of the tests of Avraham: he desired a place to bury Sarah but did not find it until he purchased it…” Which one was it? Was HaShem being kind to Avraham or was HaShem testing him? Make up your mind! Rav Simcha Zissel Broide z”l, the famed Rosh Yeshiva of Chevron, teaches that there is no real contradiction here. The test itself was for Avraham to see the kindness of HaShem, even during the hardest moments of his life. “The greatness of Avraham was that he passed this test by only seeing HaShem’s kindness before his eyes…” (Sam Derech, Chayei Sarah, pg. 125-126). This is our test as well! See HaShem’s kindness in your life: count your blessings and make your blessings count!

Congratulations to the past weeks’ winners!
