When we started two years ago the first issue was just 12 pages and we printed 1,000 copies. We described The Clanger as a secret love-letter to Bedford. The new-look Clanger is 40 pages and we’ve printed 25,000. We want to share it with more people, and take the news about the best of Bedford further afield. If you’ve never visited Bedford before, here are many, many reasons to drop by. If you’ve been before, we’d love you to come back again and see our town through different eyes. And if you live here, we hope we’ve made you proud of your town.

Over the last two years The Bedford Clanger has established itself as the town’s definitive arts, culture and listings publication dedicated to showcasing the very best of Bedford. We are proof that there is more to Bedford than meets the eye and our aim is to share the joy! We’re a small team of people, passionate about promoting Bedford as a vibrant cultural, retail and tourist destination.

As you can see from our front cover, this issue will celebrate A Very Bedford Christmas. We’ve researched the best of the festive events taking place during November and December including this year’s Christmas Fair, Christmas Tree Festival and Bedford Panto. If you would like to learn a new craft, improve your existing artistic skills or just want to explore a new hobby, then head to The Bedford Arts & Crafts Centre Open Day on 7th December.

Between 11am and 2pm there will be the opportunity to talk to tutors, see what’s on offer, and purchase some of the delightful individual and unique crafts produced - ideal Christmas presents! Places are still available on the following workshops; Silver Jewellery Making, Design and Make your own Christmas Wreath, Christmas Flower Designs and Make a Bag (Introduction to Patchwork and Quilting) – so hurry before they get booked up.

The open day will also feature carol singing, mince pies and mulled wine, so it sounds like the perfect way to get into the festive spirit! You can also by course vouchers – a great Christmas present for anyone with a crafty fl air.

Bedford School is in the heart of the town and throughout the year is host to a number of events that are open to those of us outside its hallowed walls.

As well as having a thriving theatre (more details on the Theatre page), Bedford School arts department hosts the Gilbert Lloyd Lectures and a variety of art exhibitions that are all open to the general public. We’ve chosen a couple of events that are coming up shortly, but keep an eye on their website www.bedfordschool.org.uk for more details:

Gilbert Lloyd lecture Thursday 14th November 7.30pm ‘Lowry’The exhibition brought together the very best of Lowry’s urban scenes and industrial landscapes that encouraged visitors to think about Lowry’s contribution to art history, arguing for his achievement as Britain’s pre-eminent painter of the industrial city. This lecture will explore this theme further.

Neil McGregor ‘Inspiration and Image’ Exhibition Opening evening Friday 8th November 7.30-9pm Exhibition continues until Friday 22nd November. Opening hours Monday to Friday 9.30-4pm, Saturday 9.00am-12.15pm. Closed Sundays.

Neil McGregor is a Yorkshire-based artist and this exhibition will be something of a mini retrospective charting his development as an artist. ‘I will attempt to tell the story of my development as an artist, with particular reference to the artists that have inspired and infl uenced me. I want the show to be educational and in particular to explain how important it is to look at and respond to other artists work.’

From the 9-24 January 2014, Bedford College’s Award Winning Higher National Diploma Graphic Design Course will be open for business.

Trading as Design Bridge, the 17 strong student team (guided by tutors Jeffrey Tribe, Danny Stijelja and David Litchfi eld) is inviting local businesses and individuals to commission students for a one-off fl at fee of £150 per project. Do you need a new logo or some branding, need to design an advert or leafl et? Then look no further!

The course at Bedford has established itself both locally and nationally as a high quality provision for Graphic Design, winning countless awards and competitions. Students work closely with leading Design Consultancies and have a professional mentoring arrangement with local agency Bonfi re Design.

The initiative will provide students with valuable real life experiences and help them to make the link between client design needs and education. Additionally, it is hoped that the project will raise suffi cient funds to enable the course to exhibit their work at two end of year exhibitions in July 2014. The students will initially be showcasing their best work at Bedford College’s South Bank Arts Centre and soon after at a major London venue as part of the D&AD (Design and Art Direction) New Blood annual graduate exhibition of the best emerging new talent for 2014.

This exhibition explores the landscapes of the great watercolourists of the late 18th and early 19th centuries. Bawden’s BritainSaturday 7th December 2013 - Sunday 11th May 2014Bawden Gallery, The Higgins Art Gallery and MuseumThis exhibition celebrates Edward Bawden’s unique take on Britain and its inhabitants, both human and animal. From woodpigeons and church spires on a wallpaper design to a village bobby in one of his characteristic linocuts, Bawden’s closely observed depictions of British life show a wit and humour that is special to the artist. Cash mobbing is back in Bedford and this special food edition promises to be a very tasty treat.

So what is it all about? Well, we meet (on 9th November), we bring £5 (note or coins welcome), we all spend it in the same shop, and we give some friendly feedback to the shopkeeper while we are at it. Why? To give independent shop keepers in our town a little boost (monetary and otherwise), to discover and rediscover our independent shops, and to let them know what we love about their shop, and what would make us spend more of our money there. Anyone can come, you just need £5, an open mind and a positive attitude. Whether it’s 5 people, or 50, we can still make a difference. How? We will pull a shop name out of a proverbial hat when we meet. To nominate a shop email Kayte@kaytejudge.com and put cash mob in the subject line. Criteria: the shop needs to be in Bedford, need a boost, be independently owned and run and with a variety of goods under £5. This time we want to celebrate food so nominate your favourite deli, convenience store, bakery or (why not?) market stall. Please nominate places that we can buy food from rather than places to have lunch – we can do that afterwards! Places we have already cash mobbed – Rose Tinted Vintage, Arcadia Sweet Shop, and Goldings. Sometimes other businesses give us special offers so you might get a treat too – we’ve had free cake, cut price sweets, half price mexican food, cinema tickets and more so far. Who knows what we’ll get next time? So, who’s in?

Living It Up was originally set up to promote Mencap’s ’Stay Up Late’ national campaign to promote the rights of people with a learning disability to stay up late and have fun.

The first event in Bedford was on 7th September 2009 and Living It Up’s volunteers have held regular nights out since then.Living It Up currently hold quarterly night club and band night events for people with a learning disability where members are able to meet friends and experience a night club setting in a safe environment. Said organiser Clare Crawford-Smith: “We’ve got over 250 members, so there is a real demand for what do. We get such positive feedback from everyone who comes and the events are brilliant fun!”Fancy helping out? Living It Up is currently looking for people who

would like to join their team of volunteers. Said Clare, “We’d love people to support at our events as well as volunteers who may have other skills to offer such as running dance or DJ sessions, web designing or experience in fundraising or marketing. The much-loved Christmas Tree Festival will once again be held at St Paul’s Church, St Paul’s Square in Bedford from 4 - 8 December.

This year the festival will have over 70 trees designed and decorated by a mix of schools, businesses, community groups and charities including Aragon Lacemakers. The theme this year is ‘Christmas Songs and Carols’. The event, which each year raises money for Bedford Hospitals Charity, will also feature carol performances from junior school choirs during the day. Fusion Youth Choir will be singing on Saturday from 2pm, as well as performances from many other choirs from junior schools. At 7.30pm on Saturday 8th the church will present a Christmas Classics Performance by the Grier Trio. Tickets are £14 and you can purchase them by calling 01234 340163 or 01234 783181. From Friday 13 until Sunday 15 December, Bedford’s Christmas Fair will take place in the town centre and we just can’t wait. What better way to get in the festive spirit, than to experience the sights, sounds and smells of a traditional Christmas with stalls and fairground rides throughout the heart of the Town Centre.

Throughout the three days there will be an array of madcap seasonal street entertainment, music and shows, filled with crazy characters who you may meet during the weekend – some may amaze you, others inspire you, and one or two may insult you (steady on! - Ed). If it all gets a bit much, head to the traditional tea room in the Harpur Suite for a cuppa. There’ll be more stalls indoors too.

Alongside the market traders, Bedford’s shops will be offering special in-store promotions over the Christmas Fair weekend. We have an enviable array of independent shops in Bedford, so shop local and pick up some unique gifts along Bedford High Street and Castle Quay. The first two hours’ parking in any council-run car park is free, so make a day of it!

Bedford Borough Council’s music service is expanding its offering to ensure that lower, middle and upper schools students can all be given an opportunity to learn an instrument, or become part of a new musical group.

‘Music for Bedford Borough’ is releasing their brand new ‘What’s On’ brochure for 2013/14 which details all of the new and existing services that are on offer.

There are brand new initiatives like ‘Battle of the Bands’ for middle and upper schools, the introduction of instrumental lessons with new fun and colourful instruments, a keyboard festival, and the launch of the first Residential Music Camp.

Bedford Borough Council’s music service is not only continuing to offer their instrumental lessons and encouraging students to take up learning an instrument, they are also offering a programme to teach students about the music industry. Using a partnership approach, the service will offer work experience to students in event management, teaching, administration and marketing.

Sarah Cowley joined us at The Bedford Clanger as part of a Prince’s Trust work experience course. We caught up with her to find out how things had changed and to learn more about the Prince’s Trust:

At the beginning of the year I was an amazingly shy and introverted person. I had lost self-confidence and lacked stability in my life which left me feeling like little more than a hopeless youth. A friend mentioned the Prince’s Trust course to me so I joined simply to fill some time thinking that the course wouldn’t be of any help. I couldn’t have been more wrong. The 12 week course focuses upon employability and team building skills among young people aged 16-25. Throughout the weeks the team of roughly 12-15 young people engage in a variety of activities ranging from a free week away spent completing outdoor activities like rock climbing and archery, to training to the local fire station. The team leaders couldn’t be more supportive and people from all backgrounds are accepted on to the course. After the Prince’s trust I have now gained the confidence to re-take my A Levels and have made many new friends who still help and support me through this. Anyway, back to the meat. With Christmas round the corner, thoughts are turning to turkey and all the trimmings. DavidJon stocks free range, grain-fed turkeys reared in Sharnbrook, as well as other seasonal staples such as mince pies, pigs-in-blankets and chipolatas. David’s right-hand man at the counter is Pino, an Italian-born butcher who makes traditional coppa (seasoned and dried pork neck that is hung for 6 months and resembles salami) that can be bought from the shop. Behind the scenes, David’s son Philip is the master sausage-

maker, and after numerous taste tests I can guarantee that DJ’s chipolatas will tempt even the fussiest toddler. The spicy Italian sausages are also delicious, but it’s the traditional British banger that is DavidJon’s best seller.

So, why should you go out of your way to support your local butcher? Well, for starters, they are almost always cheaper than supermarkets. They also offer personal service, knowledge and experience that they are more than willing to share with their customers – something lacking in a supermarket environment; but most of all, they are a part of their community. HOMETOWN TOURIST

After I had received my first copy of the Bedford Clanger

my calender was packed with plays I wanted to see, festivals I wanted to go to, gigs, jazz nights, concerts, speeches and readings I wanted to listen to, guided walks I wanted to attend, groups I wanted to join, food I wanted to taste, places I wanted to visit and people I wanted to meet. And I did! In less than three months I had become such a Bedford enthusiast and explorer that I felt as if I had spent my whole life there.

In this 365 days, I lived with an adorable Bedforditalian host-family, I joined the Kempston Community Theatre Group, volunteered at the Bedford Corn Exchange, worked as a waitress during the Bamberg Beer Festival and served at Andaluz – the vibrant Spanish Tapas Bar in Castle Road. I went on a relaxing river trip on the Great Ouse, I saw the new black swan, I went to the John Bunyan Museum, the Higgins Art Gallery and to the Place Theatre; I bought a little picture in the Eagle Gallery and an old children’s version of the Pilgrim’s Progress in the Eagle Bookshop; I visited Woburn Abbey, I saw many inspiring plays during the Bedford Fringe Festival, I admired the properties, gardens and rooms of the Panacea Society, I danced in the Noble Rot – a quaint bar in Tavistock Street; I became the most loyal

customer of Brooks Hair & Beauty; I had a romantic pick-nick [sic] on the riverside and a sound English breakfast in the Embankment Pub, a delicious Lemon-Polenta Cake at Fancy in Roff Avenue, healthy lunch at Luscious in Lime Street, the best fish and chips in Denmark Street and the most amazing carrot cake at the Higgins Pantry. I learnt to say “wo’a” and “ba’a” instead of “water” and “butter”; I spent lovely evenings in the Park Pub, RioBello, Reem and Indian Summer; I saw interesting foreign films during the Bedford Film Festival; I bought bowls of fresh vegetables and fruit in the market, fantastic Italian groceries in Bower Street, exotic food in Midland Road and funny dresses in vintage and charity shops.

During my stay I laughed, I cried, I made friends and I fell in love with someone who worked in the bar of the Park Inn Hotel with its breathtaking view overlooking the most enduring landmarks of Bedford - the river, the Swan Hotel, the Town Bridge and the tower of St. Paul’s Church.

Christian, the protagonist of the Pilgrim’s Progress, dreams about salvation. I dream about returning to Bedford!

365 Dreamlike Days in Bedford

For one year I was given the opportunity to live in one of the most charming towns in England. In September 2012 Bamberg University sent me as a foreign language teaching assistant to its twin town in the middle of the country – Bedford. While all the other assistants spent their free time travelling around Britain I decided to make the most of the area I was living in.

Back in April we printed an article by Natalie Mehl, a German student who was spending a year in Bedford. We also posted Natalie’s piece on the #citizenbedford blog and it became an instant hit. Natalie’s observations about Bedford summed up the essence of being a Hometown Tourist; about looking at your surroundings through new eyes and embracing new experiences. Natalie recently returned to Bamberg, but before she left we met up to discuss her writing something to reflect her year in Bedford. Here is what she wrote:

Bedford is experiencing a metamorphosis. The Bedford Fringe Festival had its biggest year so far. The first Bedford Film Festival took place at the newly renovated Higgins Art Gallery. Big plans are afoot to convert the embankment area south of the bridge into a specatacular hub of cinema, shopping and dining. What is going on?? Could Bedford be the next ‘it’ town of the East?? Soon you won’t need to travel to Cambridge or Milton Keynes. You need only look around at the efforts of a driven handful of brilliant, creative minds to see that exciting things, both for adults and children, are taking place. More theatre, bands and events are choosing to come to Bedford than ever before. So Mr. John Q Public, Miss Tourist, ask around, read the Clanger, and go out and enjoy Bedford. It’s only going to get better.

Skeptics in The PubThe Bedford Skeptics meet on the 3rd Thursday of every month at The White Horse, Newnham Avenue. Here’s how they describe themselves: Each month, we find a speaker - typically a scientist or prominent skeptic who will speak for around 40 minutes. The subjects of the talks vary, but they will typically be about a common belief that either cannot be justified by the available evidence, or that can actually be demonstrated to be false by the available evidence. The topic is then informally debated. Non-skeptics welcome and encouraged!

Bedford’s Townscape Heritage Initiative on Bedford High Street is making good progress with the latest project, a shop front improvement scheme, nearing completion at 119-121 High Street. The building is currently occupied by Reels Amusements at the northern end of Bedford High Street and is the first full shop front replacement to be undertaken by a property owner using the Townscape Heritage Initiative grant funding.

The new shop front is designed to closely replicate an earlier Victorian shop front, captured in a photograph published in 1906. In a further nod to the shop’s past, look out for the Bedford Supply Stores heritage signage on the side of the building. The shop front now includes timber elements, etched glazing, glazed tiles and will be decorated with hand painted signage. It will be exciting to see how this latest project and others transform the buildings and the appearance of Bedford’s

has also now started on 123-125 High Street, the corner property occupied by Rajkot restaurant, Newsfayre and Anglia Cars. This follows the earlier grant funded refurbishment of the building’s first floor, as residential accommodation.

The Townscape Heritage Initiative project is funded by the Heritage Lottery Fund, Bedford Borough Council and Bedford BID and seeks to restore historic properties on High Street, bringing them back to their former glory and bringing vacant floor space back into use. Delivery of the project runs until 2016, although all grant funding must be allocated by August 2014. There are a number of High Street properties in the process of putting together their grant applications, with three submissions expected before the New Year. So look out for further improvements to Bedford High Street in 2014.

So, with a massive arsenal of music at his disposal, what does Jaguar Skills listen to when he unwinds ?I can tell you what the most listened to thing on my itunes is. It’s a “Door Slam” sound effect.

And, if he wasn’t a Superstar DJ ? I’d be a super-star fishmonger or a super-star cheese maker.

His favourite venue is in Korea, but he can’t remember the name of it. So, there you have it: DJ Jaguar Skills, the man, the myth and, quite possibly, in years to come, a bit of a balaclava-wearing legend.

Mr Skills career blinked into the light 15 years ago when he made a 60 minute mix CD for Japanese fashion label Maharishi that proved rather popular. Several years hard graft followed, honing his skills in the UK, which led to a residency at Jade Jagger’s worldwide Jezebel parties. Decks were wrecked from Russia to Hong Kong and back.

Then, he had a very good idea. What would happen if a DJ mixed all the pivotal records of hip-hop chronologically?. The answer (in 2006) was ‘1979-2006: A Hip-Hop Odyssey’. Its ‘800 Tracks in 45 Minutes’ may be a record of sorts, but it’s also coherent and all

Johnny Parry Chamber Orchestra: Concert and CD launch for the magnificent An Anthology of all Things.

On Saturday 2nd November, Bedford based composer and songwriter Johnny Parry brings his complete 30-piece Chamber Orchestra to Bedford’s Corn Exchange for a rare performance celebrating their sixth release “An Anthology of All Things”. This recording, commissioned by Bedford Creative Arts, features a bespoke choir of Bedfordians, the Bedford Arts Choir.

This big-hearted army of 50 singers sings a libretto made up from hundreds of personal statements donated by the public. Originally performed in September as part of a commission by Bedford Creative Arts, the Orchestra will perform extracts of this work alongside a comprehensive selection of other

works old and new. Expect grand gestures of love and death, and an unashamed commitment to both the romantic and the unusual.

When performing, the Orchestra plays alongside a backdrop of films made by international artist Andy Holden to create their stunning and acclaimed live sets.

The evening will open with a special performance by some of Bedford’s finest musicians, entitled “Confessions of a Chorister” featuring: Roger Illingworth, Christian Webb, Betty Frances, Leah Kardos, Jonny Mudd, Sungsinger, Davypoo and Joff Lincoln.

Over the last ten years Johnny has worked as an arranger, producer, singer and instrumentalist. At the heart of his output are his own original compositions and song-writing, performed by his ever expanding ensemble. At first a solo artist, then came The Johnny

Parry Trio and finally the Johnny Parry Chamber Orchestra; a unique ensemble of over thirty players. Fully armed with strings, woodwind, brass and opera singers they have recorded six studio albums in their various guises.

Bedford College in the production process. Needless to say, Wayland’s Song, was a sell-out success on the opening night of the festival. Another personal highlight of the festival would include the screening of cult hit Quadrophenia, an event which featured a question and answer session with the fi lm’s writer Martin Stellman, who discussed the details of producing the fi lm, and how his career as a screenwriter took off. All in all, as fi rst tries go, the fi rst Bedford Film Festival was utterly outstanding, and I can sincerely hope that it will become a staple for years to come.

The 27th to the 29th of September 2013 will go down in recent history as the occasion of Bedford’s fi rst ever Film Festival, a three day event featuring workshops, local premieres and sneak previews of fi lms both independent, such as the locally made Wayland’s Song, foreign language including the Cuban Una Noche, and contributions from main-stream studios, such as the DreamWorks’ animated fl ick Turbo, starring the voice talents of Ryan Reynolds and Samuel. L Jackson. Documentaries covering a variety of topics were also available to view, with fi gures such as snowboarder

The Christmas fi lm is a staple of the season but as it’s often a family moment compromises might have to be made when deciding what to watch. To help appease kids and adults alike, here are some excellent Christmas fi lms that should, hopefully, be enjoyed by all. Now, where’s the Sherry?

ElfComedy legend, Will Ferrell plays

Buddy, a human raised as an elf at the North Pole. When he becomes too big for the elf colony, he is sent to fi nd his true identity with hilarious

consequences as he struggles to adapt to his new ‘human’ life. James Caan plays the grumpy evil corporate executive on Santa’s naughty list brilliantly.

Miracle on 54th StreetThere are two versions of this fi lm,

and as you’d expect the original is the best, but both do still deliver a lovely story of the Christmas spirit. Kris Kringle is a nice old man employed to ‘be’ Santa at a big department store. When he starts claiming to be the real Santa people suspect he’s crazy and a young lawyer risks

everything to protect him.

National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation

Ahh the Griswalds, the epitome of family life with everything they try to do, as expected, turning to disaster. For me this is the most hilarious of Christmas fi lms and to be fair one of the funniest fi lms in general. All Clive (Chevy Chase) wants is a perfect family Christmas and in a perfect refl ection of reality, nothing goes to plan.

The appeal and focus of the event was not only to bring together fi lm enthusiasts of all ages and tastes in Bedford, but also to encourage and equip young aspiring fi lmmakers in Bedford, through the examples of industry professionals, in particular successful director Richard Jobson, who fi lmed the feature Wayland’s Song, right here in Bedford, making a point of using local fi lm students from

and colour. An odd appreciation, but if Farrow and Ball made soup then this would be their pistachio green. My salmon pieces were thick and soft; loch

and smokehouse in perfect accord.

For the main Lucy went for the wild mushroom, parmesan and tarragon risotto. The wild mushrooms, foraged locally, are cooked with garlic and served with a roasted shallot. I had the outdoor reared slow-cooked and roasted Suffolk pork belly. It was served with dauphinoise potatoes, spring greens, apple and cider sauce and pickled onions. The pork, cooked overnight at a low temperature, melted in the mouth and the crackling was the best I have ever had. There are alternatives: braised beef and ale pie, beer-battered haddock. Two courses for £14.95 (Tues-Thurs), a dinner worth every penny. If Chris Smith, the landlord of The Three Tuns isn’t busy in the kitchen, I suggest you ask him about the food. His love of cooking, foraging, of sourcing the best ingredients – and local whenever possible – just adds to your appreciation of the time and effort that has been put into every dish.

And for pudding, what could be better than a chocolate peanut parfait with salt caramel? A ‘melted Marathon’(or Snicker bar)worthy of any would-be Steed or Blofeld.

The Three Tuns is defi nitely the latter, and while the journey from Bedford to Biddenham in a consumptive VW estate is hardly a country jaunt in a vintage Bentley, it is of suffi cient distance to make you feel a pleasing sense of dislocation from the hurly-burly. Within two or three miles you have country air, owls hooting, pavements unpolluted by the orange glow of street lamps.

And there, beacon-like on the side of a wide and silent avenue, stands The Three Tuns. Its facade is familiar. Its interior smells of aftershave rather than fi eld, the exposed beams more show home than Tudor. It’s modern and warm, a gastropub for the Steed and Purdy of today.

My own Emma Peel orders an Aspall cider at the bar while I – more Bond villain than New Avenger - settle for a half pint of Estrella (had it been warmer we would have cycled). We wander into the dining room and the greeting is courteous and professional. Warm bread and olive oil arrive at the table. Pub grub is a hit and miss affair, but this isn’t pub grub. This is a dining experience; of the sort Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon scoured the north.

I order one of the nibbles: home-smoked salmon on toasted bloomer bread. There are others, marinated chorizo, feta and piquillo peppers, but the idea of it being smoked on site is intriguing. Lucy has the Broccoli and Stilton soup: blue cheese, creme fraiche, toasted almonds. A perfect taste, consistency

Our delicious tofu scramble is a great way to kick start your day for breakfast as well as a fi lling lunch time option. It is served on your choice of bread with a side salad, avocado and baby vine tomatoes.

If you fancy trying this at home, here is the recipe:

Ingredients:1 block of fi rm tofu, scrambled with a fork½ red pepper: washed, sliced into small pieces½ green pepper: washed, sliced into small pieces½ yellow pepper: washed, sliced into small pieces¼ tsp turmeric¼ mixed Italian herbs2 tbsp soy sauce2 tbsp olive/sunfl ower or coconut oilPepper to taste.

Cooking Time: 30 minutes.

Method:Saute gently the mix peppers in a frying pan with the oil until tender (5-8 minutes), then add the scrambled tofu and sauté together for a further 10 minutes. Add the herbs and spices and blend altogether and sauté for a further 10 minutes until all the water from the tofu has evaporated and it starts to get a nice brown coloring.

Serve with toast of your choice or for a more fi lling option, serve with a jacket potato and side salad.

Bromham Mill

This restored watermill, dating from the 18th or early 19th century, is situated in seven acres of water meadows. The Glenn Miller Museum

The museum, dedicated to the legendary musician and bandleader, is situated in the former control tower at Twinwood Airfield, home to the famous Twinwood Festival. Glenn Miller was based in nearby Milton Ernest during World War Two, performing in the Bedford Corn Exchange and at Twinwoods. He flew from the airfield to his death in December 1944. An Aviation Museum is also on the site.

The Eagle GalleryThe Eagle Gallery in Castle Road is an artist-led gallery, run by a cooperative of 45 Bedfordshire artists. Bedford Creative ArtsBedford Creative Arts is a contemporary arts organisation and charity that has worked within the town for over 25 years.

We support and commission artists to make innovative new artwork that is ignited by place and fueled by the contributions of the people that take part. Recent commissions have seen us work with people in the town to lace the front of 1 St Paul’s Square, create and perform a new eight movement choral work for choir and orchestra, make music inspired by how bats see, and bake and decorate a cake in celebration of Bedfordshire’s afternoon tea traditions.

The Bunyan Museum

The museum tells the story of John Bunyan, one of Bedford’s most remarkable sons, in a series of tableaux, room sets and reconstructions. These, together with clear displays and information panels, make this museum an attractive, informative and accessible museum for visitors of any age. A graphic presentation of Bunyan’s most famous work “The Pilgrim’s Progress” brings this famous story alive.

The Panacea Museum

The museum, situated in Newnham Road, tells the story of the Panacea Society, a remarkable religious community that existed in Bedford for almost a century. It is housed in several buildings: the main one explains the origins and beliefs of the society; the family home of Mabel Barltrop, the founder of the Society can be visited at 12 Albany Road; the Chapel and the Wireless Room, where members could listen to the radio and play games, can also be visited.

The Choral SocietyBedford Choral Society, which

was formed in 1867, is one of the oldest in the United Kingdom. It performs three or four times each year, usually at the Bedford Corn Exchange and has approximately 130 full-time singers. Performances include classical choral works from the 18th, 19th and 20th centuries, as well as commissioned works. New members are welcome and contact details can be found on the website.

The Retirement Centre

The Retirement Centre in Rothsay Gardens in The Castle Quarter offers a diverse range of educational, social and recreational opportunities to anyone aged 50 or over, who is not in full-time employment. Box End Park You might think that land-locked Bedford was an unlikely waterski destination, but Box End Park is out to prove you wrong. With facilities based around two purpose-built watersports lakes, here you can learn to water-ski and wakeboard, either behind a boat or on the cable tow. It’s also a great place to practice open water swimming, a must for budding triathletes. They cater for every ability from complete beginners to those competing at the highest level. Route 51This is the cycle route on the Sustrans Network which runs from Milton Keynes, through quiet villages and beautiful countryside, along the embankment at Bedford and on to Sandy, It’s a safe, off-road track; perfect for walking, cycling, scooting and wheelchair use. The route is well-signposted, so it’s clear where you’re going, and if you head out from Priory Country Park you can do a short, family-friendly cycle to the Danish Camp at Willington, where you can enjoy a warming cup of hot chocolate, or lunch by the river. Green Sand Ridge WalkNot to be confused with a green sandwich walk, The Greensand Ridge Walk, which meanders through Buckinghamshire and Cambridgeshire, follows a ridge of greensand which rises from the clay vales on either side. The 40 mile / 64 km walk starts in Leighton Buzzard and finishes in Gamlingay, and the route has been split into five sections: Leighton Buzzard to Woburn 8.5 miles, Woburn to Ampthill 10 miles, Ampthill to Haynes 8.8 miles, Haynes to Sandy 7.5 miles, and Sandy to Gamlingay 5.3 miles. Marston Vale LineThe hourly rural rail link between Bedford and Bletchley is a great way of travelling cheaply and car-free to some lovely villages just outside of Bedford. Stopping at many places including Millbrook, where you can explore the Forest Centre and Millenium Country Park, Ridgemount, where the old station building has been turned into a cafe/gift shop,Aspley Guise, home to the HULA Animal Rescue Centre, Fenny Stratford, where you can walk alongside the canal and visit Fenny Lock, and finally Bletchley, the base of the famous World War Two Code Breakers. The Codebreaking Centre is now open to the public, and well worth a trip. Jordan’s MillThe newly-refurbished mill, near Biggleswade on the banks of the River Ivel, promises not to be just a ‘run of the mill’ day out, and for that alone we think it’s worth the trip! The mill was for many years the home of the Jordan family, creators of Jordan’s cereals. It remains a working mill, and you can watch the mill at work through a glass partition. Tours of the mill are available to book, and you can also visit the well-stocked shop, which sells goodies such as flour (freshly ground, of course) cereal, dried fruit and biscuits. There is a very nice cafe, and outdoor terrace with a great view over the river. There is also the wild flower garden opening soon, which includes a path which follows the original flow of the River Ivel, as well as sustainable food gardens growing rare varieties of salad, potatoes and onions.The gardens have been designed by Chelsea Flower Show winners Toll & Kitson, and the planting that has been done this year should be in full bloom by Spring 2014. www.jordansmill.com

AspectsBetween the river and Priory Marina is Aspects, the Bedford leisure complex. Aspects is sometimes neglected in lists of Bedford’s favourite cultural destinations. But if you haven’t been in a while, it is definitely worth another look. There is a big, free car park, but it’s just as accessible by bike, after a cycle along the embankment, or around the Marina. Cineworld is here: there’s a Pizza Hut, Club 2000 Bingo and a Fitness First- Bedford’s slickest fitness location. The gym boasts top-notch fitness equipment, a swimming pool and a sauna. And Cineworld certainly has a few tricks up its sleeve this winter, in the form of some fantastic live theatre, opera, ballet and Bollywood productions screened at your local cinema! These are really special events, where you can enjoy some of the best national theatre, dance and opera in the comfort and convenience of your local Cineworld; the reduced cost of them making some of the best theatre and dance accessible to all. There is also the option of eating popcorn during the performance without it being frowned upon.

Bedford town centre is situated on the banks of the River Great Ouse and has been home to a market since King Henry II granted a charter here in 1166.

The town centre boasts a picturesque Embankment, a unique mix of independent and national retailers alongside markets taking place four days a week; all served by excellent transport links.

Car park charges have been frozen for three years in a row at town centre Council-run car parks, bucking the national trend in order to support shoppers and businesses.

Bedford is also investing more to make it easier and more attractive for residents and visitors to experience the town.

Parking in Bedford town centre is simple and affordable.

From mid-November, parking will be free for the first two hours of your stay every Saturday in all town centre car parks.

Parking is already free in surface car parks and on-street parking bays on Sundays and Bank Holidays with special discounted rates available in multi-storey car parks.

We also offer residents and visitors the ability to pay for their parking using their mobile phone – ideal if you find yourself without spare change!

We take the safety and cleanliness of our car parks very seriously and many have been awarded the nationally recognised Park Mark. This is recognition that a car park has been approved by the Police and measures are in place to ensure the safety of visitors and their vehicles.

Getting to Bedford

By bus: A Park & Ride service operates from the junction of the A6 and A421 at Elstow,

providing regular services to Bedford town centre. Many urban services run until 11pm and the Sunday timetable has been expanded to provide more options to travel. Rural services have been protected to ensure residents from villages can travel into the town centre.

Bedford is also centrally located on the X5 Stagecoach route, linking Oxford and Cambridge.

By car: Bedford is conveniently located between the A1 and M1 and is well served

by the A421 dual carriageway which links the two major roads as well as the A6 and A428.

While the Thameslink line, which runs from Bedford to Brighton is undergoing a multi-billion pound upgrade to increase the number of seats and services available. Finally, the Marston Vale line operates between Bedford and Bletchley, serving 12 stations in Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.

As the return leg of the Ashes series looms large on the horizon, attention is once again focusing on England Captain and former Bedford School boy Alastair Cook.

His entry in to cricket was set in motion when, aged just 14, the Bedford School chorister caught the eye of school cricket coaches: scoring a century against the school as the 11th man for a visiting MCC side. Over the next four years Cook honed his cricket skills under the watchful eyes of school cricket coach and former England cricketer Derek Randall. By the time he left the school he had not only secured his place in the school record books but also gained a loyal band of friends and followers and, to those in the know, looked destined for great things.

Today, notably for his Ashes exploits, Alastair Cook has become

a household name the world over. His 235 not out against Australia in Brisbane in the 2010-11 series kick-started England’s fi rst Ashes victory away from home for 24 years. Cook fi nished the Ashes with a phenomenal 766 runs in seven innings. In so doing, he went past 5,000 Test runs, to become the second youngest batsman to reach the landmark after Sachin Tendulkar. His success in the Ashes was recognised not only in the cricketing world but also by the Queen who awarded him an MBE later that year for his outstanding performance in England’s Ashes triumph.

Two years later and further records were broken as he became England’s leading Test century –maker, hitting No. 23 against India in Kolkata, his third in three matches, and became the youngest player to

pass 7000 runs.Under Cook’s captaincy this

summer, England won the home Ashes series 3-0; a win that he described as the “proudest moment of my life”. Now with the world’s media and fans watching his every move, Cook faces his greatest challenge: to repeat England’s 2010-2011 success down under. We have no doubt that the modest, down to earth Cook will take it in all in his stride.

It’s great to be back amongst the pages of the new look Clanger – there’s nothing as satisfying as a successful makeover!

As we start gearing up for the Festive Season, the thoughts of many of us are probably turning to a similar subject – what can I do in the space of a few weeks to make me appear more glamorous/slender/muscular/attractive? I’ve done it myself many times – resolved to eschew the chardonnay, curb the carbs and pound the pavements a bit more, all for the promise of the LBD (little black dress) on Christmas Eve. Sometimes I’ve made it, more often than not I haven’t. And you know what? I’ve had a good time anyway.

Don’t get me wrong – I like to look good. Let’s face it, my twitter name contains the word ‘glam’. But in the age-old battle of style over substance…well, pretty packaging is lovely, but isn’t it what’s inside the box that really gets us going on Christmas morning?

That’s why the Christian church has the season of Advent. It’s not all about chocolate and cardboard doors with robins behind them. It’s a few weeks of taking a good look at the contents of our lives, checking our priorities, drawing breath before the breathless social whirl. Just like you wouldn’t go to a party without the clothes, the hair, the shoes (Ok, if you’re a guy maybe it’s just the hairbrush and the toothpaste…), so I think it’s a pity if we rush into Christmas without a bit of preparation of the ‘inner workings of our soul’ kind.

And I don’t think that’s confi ned to those of us who declare a religious slant on things either – taking stock and asking ourselves a few pointed questions works whatever our philosophy of life.

Thankfully though, the Clanger succeeds on all counts – substance and style – and I hope this edition inspires you with its sparkle.

of Design Hog suggested: ‘Lots of artists standig on top of the Butterfl y Bridge’, while Jo Midgely requested: ‘Dave the Mayor riding a swan down the River Great Ouse whilst eating a Bedford Clanger.” We think you’ll agree that Jean Hollywood rose, undaunted, to the challenge and has created a wonder to behold!
