PROVINCIAL REPORTHi All UMCI MembersWe came back March 20th, had a good time down south. We were in Yuma one month plus a week and then wentto Mazatlan for 2 weeks in a very nice time share resort. After that we took a 7 day cruise, which we should havehad last winter but due to a fire in the engine room, our trip was cancelled. Then we went back to Yuma until the17th of March.Trouble in Mexico?? None at all, I think it is safer than in Vancouver or Surrey, BC. Yes, if you stick your noseinto the wrong place, you will have problems. The Mexican people are friendly and very helpful andaccommodating.We are getting applications in for the May long week-end Rally already. Make sure you get yours in by May 1st.There will be no meals for registration we receive after May 1st. This will be the last Rally in Osoyoos so come outand enjoy the Okanagan. A BC 500 Road Rally is in the planning and if all goes well, more information will becoming shortly. Many thanks to Bill and Tina for doing the 500 Road Rally for so many years.The International Rally is in Idaho this year.Betty and I will pass on the UMCI torch at our Spring Rally. We have been involved since 1985 and it's time thatwe step back. We want to thank the Area Reps and UMCI members for all the support they have given us. We willbe staying on as the Canadian Regional Reps.

There’s not a lot to report this time of the year as we are just starting to ride again. The provincial rally in Osoyoosis still on for this May so be sure to get your registration into Abe soon. Our bowling night for April 14 has beencancelled due to lack of interest as many of us will be away. As you will have read in Abe & Betty’s report theyare stepping down as Provincial Reps. We are sending out an SOS to all our BC members, we need tohave someone step up and take it over. They have done a fantastic job over the years.

History Of the Three Flags Classic RallyIn the early 1900's when cars and motorcycles were exciting new ways to travel, motorcycle riders would start somewhere atthe Mexican border and ride all the way to Canada, just to see if it could be done. These rides were referred to as "border toborder" runs.

In 1974, after reading about the border to border runs in a 1914 newspaper that was published by the American MotorcyclistAssociation, Josef (Joe) Usatin of the Southern California Motorcycle Association (SCMA) thought it would be a great idea torekindle the old spirit of border to border runs. Joe decided to name this new ride; The Three Flags Classic. The ride was tostart in Mexico near the US border and end up somewhere in Canada. Labor Day weekend was selected for the annual dateof this long distance motorcycle event.

As of 2010, there have been 35 very successful Three Flags Classic rallies that have started in places like Tijuana, Mexicali,Nogales and Cuidad Juarez, Mexico as well as Vancouver, Canada. Over 20 rides have ended in Canada at cities such as;Kamloops, Penticton, Calgary, Harrison Hot Springs, Medicine Hat, Vancouver, Nanaimo, Kimberly and Whistler, B.C. Someof the rides have ended in Mexico at cities such as Ensenada and Tijuana. Three or four check points are included to keeptrack of the riders that seem to spread out over several states during the course of the event.

ABOUT THE SCMA

The Southern California Motorcycle Association has worked very hard over the years with all their member clubs andmembers to make the Three Flags Classic the premier motorcycle tour of the year, with the underlying spirit of the ride beingthat all riders are goodwill ambassadors from their respective countries and that by riding in this tour, they are doing their partto promote family motorcycling through greater public acceptance and understanding.

“Share the Road” language in their driver awareness programs:

Road users are reminded to never drive, bike, or walk while distracted. Doing so can result in tragic consequencesfor motorcyclists.

A motorcycle has the same rights and privileges as any other vehicle on the roadway.

Allow a motorcyclist a full lane width. Although it may seem that there is enough room in the traffic lane for amotor vehicle and a motorcycle, the motorcycle needs the room to maneuver safely. Do not share the lane.

Because motorcycles are small, they can be difficult for other road users to see them, or judge their speed anddistance as they approach.

Always signal your intentions before changing lanes or merging with traffic. This allows motorcyclists to anticipatetraffic flow and find a safe lane position.

Because of its smaller size, a motorcyclist can be hidden in a vehicle’s blind spot. Always check for motorcycles bychecking mirrors and blind spots before entering or leaving a lane of traffic and at intersections.

Don’t be fooled by a flashing turn signal on a motorcycle – motorcycle signals may not be self-canceling andmotorcyclists sometimes forget to turn them off. Wait to be sure the rider is going to turn before you proceed.

Remember that road conditions that are minor annoyances to motorists can pose major hazards to motorcyclists.Motorcycle riders may change speed or adjust position within a lane suddenly in reaction to road and trafficconditions such as potholes, gravel, wet or slippery surfaces, pavement seams, railroad crossings, and groovedpavement.

Allow more following distance -- three or four seconds – when following a motorcycle so the motorcycle rider hasenough time to maneuver or stop in an emergency. In dry conditions, motorcycles can stop more quickly than cars.

During the recent warm weather, BSA had people asking about motorcycles and scooters. On a motorcycle, youcan get 50 plus miles to a gallon. It takes half a gallon of gas to fill the tank of a scooter and it will go 100 ormore miles. Rick Nelson with BSA says more people are looking to buy a motorcycle that serves for sport usesand transportation. On-off road motorcycles are gaining popularity with a lot of people. They want to become roadriders and they also want to ride in the dirt," said Nelson. The cost for a Yamaha on-off road bike runs around$3,000. He also says that most people can get a good motorcycle in the price range of $5,000 to $12,000.When youdecide to go shopping for your new set of wheels, make sure it's comfortable and just the right size for you. Beforejumping the gun and purchasing a new motorcycle, you need to have a license endorsement. You should take amotorcycle driving safety course.
