To All HCC Members, Another amazing Canadian summer full of photographic opportunities, one being the arrival of the Tall Ships. I got caught up in the anticipation of their arrival from Toronto to Hamilton so I went out and scouted the area from Oakville to the Skyway bridge on Thursday to try and find the best advantage point. The weather was perfect, rain mist and fog. On Friday I stood on the new Burlington pier in the rain with a golf umbrella and waited to “shoot” the 1st arrival. After what seemed like eternity out of the mist, like a ghost ship, came the perfect opportunity for that classic shot with nine Canadian geese leading the way. My patience paid off and I was rewarded not only with a few images but also the feeling of what it must have felt like a hundred years ago. The moral of the story is anticipation and patience are a prerequisite for great photographic moments such as this. In this 1st edition of the Bellows for the 2013 2014 season I have included the schedule of events and the names of the new executive and their respective positions within the club. The clinics and topics are also included with the submission dates. There were many a fine image submitted to the clinics last season a few of which are in this Bellows. In this Bellows as in the past I have created links to the individual pages, seen to the left of this text in green and in italics.

LADY CARDINAL

I would like to welcome you on behalf of your new executive to the start of a new club year and the first Bellows of this coming year. Also at this time I have to thank the previous executive for the great work that they did in paving the way for this upcoming year.

I think that there a lot of things already planned that you will like this season.

First communications, Colin will be the Bellows editor again and the new web site is still being refined (i.e. under the last stages of construction) by Dan but is already available for you to visit.

Virginia has arranged for some excellent speakers covering a wide range of interests, Joe LeFevre being of special note, and some great workshops.

There will be fewer clinics offered this year to make space for this, but you will be able to enter a larger number of your images in total. Also to make it easier to view printed submissions they will also be accompanied by a projectable file that will also be shown when the results of the clinic are presented.

Information regarding all of the above is available on the web site and will be presented in detail on the orientation night.

I am looking forward to seeing you all soon,

RobROB THORNE

The Hamilton Camera Club trophies that are given out at the Annual Awards Night and Banquet to individuals who have excelled in the craft have been donated by various members and persons within the Hamilton community since the 1st one in 1899 1900. They are beautiful trophies and it is an honour to be recognized by your peers and to receive one of these trophies. These generous donations have become part of our history and rightfully so. Some would argue in this day and age if they should still remain a part of what we do as a club and that perhaps we as a club should abolish the idea of giving them altogether. Others, such as our club historian, would argue against the idea simply because without these trophies and the recording of our history then perhaps we loose the backbone of our very existence. I, like all of you, have made the transition from the film world to the digital world and along the way I moved from the slide projector to the digital projector. I remember walking into Connaught Camera in downtown Hamilton to make the purchase back in 1970 of the slide projector and I still have it to this day and in working order. The sad part though while doing research is that I can not find reference to Connaught Camera on the internet, do we wish to do the same with our trophies and forget they ever existed. On the following page is a list of the trophies and how they were presented around 1977 when the club was still showing colour slides.

The list on page 8 is courtesy of Ed Luinstra who became President in May 1977

Plagiarism, the act of copying some other persons work and using for ones own personal gain is immoral and although perhaps not considered illegal in some parts of the world it can have copyright infringement implications. When copying and pasting to ones own computer and using the information for personal use is fine but when used in the public domain then permission from the author or at the very least open credit should be given to the original author.

Copyright and copyright laws vary from country to country and have been around since the invention of the printing press as a way of protecting original work and publications. In 1662 by an act of parliament under the reign of Charles II in England the Press Act was passed, which required a copy of the original publication that was to be printed for public use by an author, be entered into the Stationers Company in London. This company had been awarded a Royal Charter in 1557 and was responsible for enforcing the act until the passing of the “Statute of Anne” in 1709. With the passing of the statute the responsibility of enforcement went from the private sector to the governing courts of the land. Canada established copyright laws in 1832 but was subject to the imperial laws of England until the passing of the Canadian copyright law in 1921. It was readdressed and changed in 1988 1997 and 2012. It is interesting to note that even software and computer programs are copyrighted and even though we may “purchase” a copy to use on our computers and tablets are we in effect renting or leasing the software or program. Adobe and other software manufactures are adopting the “Cloud” as subscription based services to their software and programs. The benefits work both ways for the consumer and the company, one being the reduction of piracy and second the continuing technological changes of the software or program can be used without the need to purchase a new copy or edition of the software.
