My good friends in Christ Jesus, Today’s Gospel brings to mind two images: enjoying communion with God and Jesus seeking us out when we are in trouble. The first image comes from the beginning of the Gospel when Jesus sends his disciples away so that he can go up the mountain and pray. For Jesus prayer is simply resting in the presence of his Father. Jesus is not seeking an answer to a prayer. He is not looking for a resolution to a problem. He is not asking for more patience with his disciples. He simply wants to sit in his Father’s presence. It is almost like a small child crawling up on his parent’s lap and letting the parent hold them. The child feels safe and loved. The child is not looking for anything else. It seems to me that this is a helpful image for what our prayer might look like. C.S. Lewis concludes his Chronicles of Narnia by speaking of a “new Narnia.” The old Narnia which is destroyed is simply a “shadowland” hinting at something better. The way to enter the new Narnia is to “Come further up. Come further in.” Lewis is depicting our belief in the Reign of God. How does one enter heaven? We are to move “further up…further in” to the presence of God. We never stop discovering God. We simply enjoy greater communion. Maybe this week in our prayer we can all simply move further up and further in to the presence of God. The second image that strikes me is that of Jesus who is enjoying resting in the presence of his Father up on the mountain while his disciples experience a storm on the sea. When Jesus seems to be distanced and separated from his disciples – he, in fact, is closer to them. He knows that they are in trouble. He goes to them immediately by walking on water. In the biblical world, the ocean or the sea is seen to be a place of chaos and fear. At the beginning of creation, the earth was “without form or shape” and a mighty wind swept over the waters of chaos (Gen. 1). Out of this chaos – God spoke. When God speaks order and existence spring forth. In today’s Gospel, we see Jesus (God made flesh) walking on the water and speaking to the disciples. Christ not only has the ability to notice us when we are in trouble – but he also has the power to come to us and to calm any chaos. When you pray this week, you might imagine Christ coming to you in your weakness, difficulty and sin. Imagine him calming all of that. Listen to him. If we do – we might actually learn how to walk on water. Fr. Jim

100th Anniversary of the miracle of

Our Lady of Fatima:

Bishop Hanefeldt has asked each parish to provide an opportunity to gather and pray the rosary on the 13th day of each month from May until October. This commemorates the appearance of Mary to the children on the 13th day of these month in 1917.

In this honor – we offer the ro-sary this today, Sunday, August 13, at 3 pm in English

and 3:30 pm in Spanish. All are welcome.

Continuing God’s Good Works Capital Campaign A benefit concert for Joanie Eickoff given by Dianne Schneider, Claudette Sekutera, Amy & Andy Schneider, Jeanne Allen, and Sue Stueben will be held at the Cathedral Sunday afternoon, Aug. 20th, 3-4:30 pm.

You may have seen some flyers in church telling about Joni Eickhoff, one of our parishioners and a dear friend of mine, who needed a stem cell transplant to extend her life and because of the circumstances it was not covered by insurance. A few years ago, Joni was one of the driving forces of why I recorded a CD. She encouraged & supported me and promoted the CD for me. I did not want to do a concert at that time despite her many requests, but now that seems to have a purpose. We'll be doing some songs from the CD, a few good hymns from church, some old classics, and a couple of surprises! You might even find yourself tapping your toes at times! I think you will find it an enjoyable time and most of all a time of fellowship and loving our neighbor! There is no charge but a freewill offering will be available. Joni has an amazing story in the August 11th West Nebraska Register! Hope to see you on August 20th! Thank you, Dianne

Today (Sunday)– Please join us!

No Lunch

A MESSAGE FROM MRS. KLEIN I am excited for our 2017-2018 school year to start! I miss the halls being filled with students who are pursuing both academia and faith. To be sure you’re aware of recent changes at GICC, I’ll mention them here: - ALL School forms were sent via email to parents August 7. These forms need to be completed before the first day of school, August 15. This is the school's preference for gathering student information, however if you would like to be mailed hard copy forms instead, please contact Amy Ostdiek in our office. • PowerSchool is our new online parent portal. Login instructions were mailed to each

family in late July. Please access your account at gicc.powerschool.com/public.- Student Announcements will be emailed daily to students at their gmail accounts in lieu of teachers reading them in class. Juniors will have the opportunity for Open Lunch the last week of each month IF they have ZERO tardies and all passing grades. Parents must fill out the Senior/Junior Privilege form that was sent out via email with other forms.

• - Crusader Eclipse T-Shirt orders are available for students, and they can wear the shirts to school on Monday, August 21, when our school views the Eclipse. Order on page 4. • August 25 is School Picture Day, and we’re relaxing the dress code to allow stu-

dents’ individuality for their photos. Jeans, sweatshirts, and t-shirts ARE acceptable. No sweats, yoga pants, or holes in jeans please.

If at any time you have questions or concerns, please contact us. Together, we are shaping the future …. one student at a time.

Sunday: Nineteenth Sunday in Ordinary Time Monday: St. Maximilian Kolbe Tuesday: The Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Wednesday: St. Stephen of Hungary Saturday: St. John Eudes; Blessed Virgin Mary

Today Readings First Reading — Elijah waits on the mountain for the LORD to pass by (1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a). Psalm — Lord, let us see your kindness, and grant us your salvation (Psalm 85). Second Reading — From the Israelites, with their law and the prophets, comes the Christ (Romans 9:1-5). Gospel — As Jesus walked on the sea, the disciples were terrified (Matthew 14:22-33).

A rabbi was asked why God sends trials and troubles into human lives. “Because God gets lonely for his people” was the reply. There is some resonance with this wisdom in today’s Gospel, as Jesus makes his disciples get into a boat without him and goes off alone while they venture into stormy waters. Of course, neither Jews nor Christians believe that the Almighty plays this sort of whimsical game with them, but there is some truth in the statement that we don’t turn to God for saving help until we’re in a bind. Peter’s role today, as it is throughout the New Testament, is to be a sign or to represent each member of the church and the whole church. Our story is the tale told about Peter’s faith today. What can bolster our faith is that even when Christ calls us to face bravely the tempests of life, if we are walking through them with our eyes fixed on him in faith, we have nothing to fear. Even when we falter or sink, simply crying “Lord, save me!” is enough to help us know the steady grasp of God’s hand. Then, sheltered inside the walls of faith, the storms we endure lose their power over us. Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.

NOTHING TO FEAR

“God loves us, treats us with respect, and asks us to do the same with others. … No one should ever be treated callously or carelessly—everyone should be cherished and protected!”

Cardinal Timothy M. Dolan, Chairman USCCB Committee on Pro-Life Activities

2016 Respect Life Month Statement,

TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION The Roman Canon, called Eucharistic Prayer I, is probably seldom heard in your parish. Some priests will choose it for at least one of the Masses of Christmas, or the Easter Vigil. Such sparing use of this prayer seems strange, especially since it was the only Eucharistic Prayer in the Latin Rite for many centuries, from as long ago as 500 right up to 1970. In 1965, the vernacular language was approved for the canon of the Mass. Almost immediately, some experimental texts began to surface in the Netherlands, and priests began to use new Dutch texts without permission. By 1966, Pope Paul VI had set up a committee to consider whether or not it was time to approve such experimentation and extend it to non-Dutch churches. No sooner had the committee been formed than other individuals copied the Dutch by just plunging on ahead. The Dutch bishops had approved the use of the new prayers nationwide in 1968, and Flemish bishops in Belgium quickly agreed. By then, German translations of the Dutch prayers were in wide use, and before long nearly one hundred Eucharistic Prayers, all unapproved, were in circulation in France. The Vatican heard the widespread desire for more variety in Eucharis-tic Prayer forms, and, with the pope’s approval, the process of creating new official prayers began.—Rev. James Field, Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co.

¿Puedes ayudarnos?
