Council for Administrators for Special Education (CASE): Winter Hybrid Workshop

Presenters: Dr. Ben Spring and Julie Weatherly

Most school systems have been introduced to the critical structures of Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) and principles of ABA when it comes to preventing and responding to student aggression. While these systems and principles are essential, they often miss the big picture: lasting happiness for kids. When we apply principles of positive psychology to these frameworks, real meaningful change can happen. Join Dr. Springer in the reproducible steps of bringing happiness back to the forefront for our kids.

IEP Zen: Every special educator knows how critical our procedures and compliance are in the world of special education. Not every special educator knows how to take care of themselves in the process. We’ve earned our moment of Zen. Take a step back and breathe in some basic skills to bring balance and mastery back to the IEP experience.

Leading with Heart: Compassionate leadership in the age of restorative discipline. Our ability to adopt a relationship-first culture as school leaders will depend on how well we understand the concept of compassion in leadership. Learn reproducible steps of compassionate leadership and build a culture of optimism and compassion in your school.

The Year 2019 was another active year in the area of special education law, and a lot has happened since last year’s Hybrid Conference! Although IDEA and Section 504 have not changed in a very long time, there continues to be an enormous amount of litigation going on, as courts and federal agencies attempt to interpret and apply the laws’ provisions. In this session, there will be an update on some of the nation’s significant special education “legal happenings” during the past year, highlighting relevant court decisions and federal agency interpretations. At the end of the presentation, time will be devoted to Q&A with on-site and virtual Hybrid Conference attendees.

Children with Anxiety-Related and Oppositional Behavior

Since 2000, Jessica Minahan has helped clinicians, teachers and parents identify and understand the variables that cause students to act inappropriately. She has worked continuously with students who exhibit an infinite variety of behavior challenges in both urban and suburban public schools.

She will demonstrate how commonplace school factors, as well as a student’s underdeveloped skills, contribute to his or her challenging behavior. She will provide professionals with time-tested interventions that will lead students to more appropriate, constructive behavior in and out of school and give parents tools to continue the work at home.

Among the many reasons new teachers leave the field within their first five years, disruptive students are on the top of the list. Without intervention, these children are at risk for poor performance, diminished learning, and social/behavior problems in school. From this workshop, participants will be able to easily implement preventive tools, strategies, and interventions for increasing work engagement, initiation, persistence, and self-monitoring.

SOCIAL EMOTIONALLEARNING:A Schoolwide Approach

With the Michigan Department of Education’s shift to the Michigan Integrated Continuous Improvement Process (MICIP) and the Whole School, Whole Child, Whole Community model (WSCC), the demand for schools to meet the needs of the Whole Child can seem overwhelming. According to CASEL, students who have experienced Social Emotional Learning (SEL) have performed 11 percent higher on academic measures, than students who have not been exposed to SEL programming. Additionally, every dollar spent on Social Emotional Learning, yields an $11 return (Columbia University). Join Dina Rocheleau, Assistant Superintendent of Ferndale schools as she shares the journey of how one Michigan district went from being designated a “failing district” in 2011, to earning accolades including being named the 2019 Innovative District Award winner from Houghton Mifflin Harcourt, Michigan 2019 ASCD’s Whole Child Award winner, and received a visit from the American Institute of Research. Learn how to implement effective SEL programs district-wide, ask questions regarding your current programming, and plan to come back in fall 2020 to join us for a bus trip to Ferndale for a day of on-site learning, followed by a Q & A session.
