TAG-Org chairman and founder, His Excellency Talal Abu-Ghazaleh, shares his fascinating views and those of others in setting the scene for the next generation, the generation of the Knowledge Age.

Do we know what the world will look like in 2020? In a word, no. But we do have a better idea of what we should be looking for, and how to prepare for it. The following is a list of scenarios that aims to do just that. The purpose of the scenario process is less about predicting the future than it is about exploring the possible future implications of our present actions. Naturally, the scenarios are neither complete nor finalized. Still, they can provide valuable insights into what the world might look like in 2020 and what role ICT might play in shaping it.

1. Technology during this century will focus on the mind with which God has privileged mankind because so very few of its numerous divine secrets have been revealed or uncovered so far.

• The challenge is how to capitalize and monetize intellect developed through internet use and to effectively reward people for their endeavors.

• Employees must be better prepared to become a knowledge agent or knowledge employee.

2. We have moved from the “Information Age” to the “Knowledge Age” and will continue to the “Wisdom Age” during the next century. During the Information Age, we facilitated the flow of information. In the Knowledge Age, we use it efficiently to create knowledge and wealth. In the Wisdom Age, we will use it for the benefit of humanity.

• Cyberspace provides the prospect of a global democracy; a world without borders with all users enjoying the same rights.

• Information and communication technologies can make substantial contributions towards achieving greater safety for humanity. Not enough has been done to achieve this so far.

3. We are now on the threshold of the age of smart internet.

• In the next 50 years, e-commerce will become our de facto marketplace, replacing the traditional marketplace.

• We will stop thinking about and treating “the world of the digital” as separate from our own because we will be living a digitized existence. Our world is digital.

• Information technology will perform most of our daily workload and will be friendlier to us than a lot of our friends ever are. Everything will be digitally signed.

• Smart engines or machines and smart software will move us from ‘virtual’ to ‘virtual reality’.• The century will witness the rise of more intelligent machines and ‘smart’ hardware. • Compatibility will become universal.

4. More progress will be achieved in one calendar year than what was achieved during the preceding 10 years.

• It took 200 years to fill the Library of Congress with all of its content, while the future will see the equivalent volume created every few minutes.

• Technology is not cumulative but it is pluralistic (multipartite) with the one invention often unleashing or leading to a series of inventions. Over the next 50 years there will be an immeasurable improvement in Information Technology performance compared to today. You only have to look back 20 years to realize just how far and how quickly we are moving.

• In 1961, a gigaflop of computing power cost $1.1 trillion. Today, the same amount costs just $1.80. We should expect computer and telecommunication costs to be zero over the next 50 years.

• Communication will be achieved through any device and at no cost via the internet or wireless broadband.

5. The next billion users of the internet will not be human.

• Intelligent machines will learn to communicate with each other more than human beings talk to each other. As computers become more human-like, mankind will become more like computers.

• Machines will become completely audio and visually literate.

It will not be long before each of us is using just one digital device for all types of media and communications. Our smartphones will also serve as ID cards, identifying each of us via a unique global internet number that can be used across the world for any purpose.

6. Another future language is the code of life (Life code): - Vital Biotechnology and Bio-informatics. - A series consisting of billions of letters such as A, T, C, G

• The science of genetics will become a dominant force in the 21st Century and those who ignore it may never understand how this influential force can impact their lives.

• A Genetic Map will replace the conventional ID document we currently hold. It will contain a bank of information identified by the person’s ‘genetic number’.

• With 90% of current medicines not providing a cure, future treatments will be individually tailored, by virtue of the genetic map to address each case for each person.

7. In today’s world, if you cannot export knowledge, you will not be able to achieve wealth. The path to wealth creation is in knowledge creation.

When sharing, spreading, or selling knowledge, the key is to make the buyer part of the network and to ensure that the network is steadily growing. Attempts to control or hoard knowledge will depreciate its value. Consider the fax machine. The first buyer had a useless device until it was able to communicate with other fax machines. And with every additional fax machine sold, the network becomes much more valuable and encourages every buyer to become a salesman too: “Don’t you have a fax? You should get one.”

• If you are not able to create knowledge with the protection of Intellectual Property Rights, you will not be able to innovate.

• Digital Intellectual Property will be at the core of trade and business.

Evaluating Student Performancethe student performance and progress is evaluated on semester basis and for all courses. students are required to meet prerequisites for enrollment in each semester. the examination and grading system of the programs abides by the following regulations:• Success in a course is usually based on the combination of a grade awarded for the course work, plus a grade for the final examination.• Each course will have a total of 100 points, and these are distributedas follows: 60% for the course work (quizzes, assignments, homework, midterm exams, practical) and 40%for the final examination.• The passing mark in each course is 60% out of the total.

a student’s grade point average is determined by dividing the cumulative grades of all courses attempted by the number of units in the student›s semester schedule. the university has also set some rules for attendance in courses as well as procedures for transfers of credits from other universities. the process for advising and providing career guidance to students is also part of the support system in the university and is managed online.

English Placement Test: This test is used to place students into the appropriate level. It focuses on reading and grammar skills and consists of 130 multiple choice questions based on the objectives, content, and language of the eight levels.

Cambridge ESOL Examinations:The ESOL exams are well known for their high quality assessment of the English language. They provide evidence of English language ability and show that the holder of a particular certificate has the skills they need to use English in a wide range of professional and everyday situations.

For this reason our evaluation mechanism is that we map the level of the candidates based on the placement test to the end assessment which are conducted by ESOL (English for Speakers of Other Languages) .We prepare candidates to sit for the ESOL Examinations after knowing their exact level which is measured by a placement test. • UNESCO and TAG-Org: Partnership on ICT Indicators in EducationUNESCO and Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Organization (TAG-Org) signed a cooperation agreement to establish knowledge societies in the Arab Region and on the promotion of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) to support education, science and culture in the Arab region. The significance of this project stems from providing a credible and standardized profile of data on the state of the Arab countries on ICT in education.

• Joint Educational Program between TAGSB and Birzeit UniversityThis program teaches the curriculum of Talal Abu-Ghazaleh Graduate School of Business (TAGSB) to students at Birzeit University to obtain a joint certificate issued by TAGSB and the University.
