Every Monday through Friday, children in the greater Milwaukee communityenjoy fun, engaging, quality children’s programming because of the generouscommitment of The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation. Jane Bradley Pettit wascommitted to improve the lives of all children, from all socio-economic walks oflife. Because of her legacy, Milwaukee Public Television and the Jane BradleyPettit Foundation continue to offer high-quality programming that bothchildren and their parents look forward to watching.
Shows such as Sesame Street, Curious George, Sid The Science Kid, Martha Speaks, and others engage and stimulate children’s visual imagination and mentaldevelopment. Sesame Street, now in its 44th year, and our other acclaimed PBSKids shows are created specifically to help bridge the literacy gap, includingreading skills, language development, and math skills. PBS Kids programs alsomodel important life lessons such as empathy, generosity, and courtesy. Publictelevision programming is an effective teacher. Currently less than 10% ofstudents in Wisconsin score at an advanced reading level, and 82% of MilwaukeePublic Schools kids live in poverty, which affects their learning ability. Therefore, it is imperative that Milwaukee Public Television continue ourmission, to carry programming that encourages and inspires children to read andlearn.
“The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation has been a long-time supporter of MPTV’schildren’s programming. Jane Bradley Pettit believed it was important to providelearning opportunities for children of all ages. MPTV has been an excellentpartner in this endeavor. The Foundation is pleased to continue the partnershipthat began with Ms. Pettit’s vision.”
The Jane Bradley Pettit Foundation’s generous gift is one of the primary sourcesof funding for our award-winning educational children’s programming onMilwaukee Public Television. MPTV is proud of this collaboration with theJane Bradley Pettit Foundation because we share similar goals – to strengthenlocal communities by supporting the positive development of all children. JaneBradley Pettit’s legacy of commitment to children’s educational developmentcontinues to live on in her commitment to Milwaukee Public Television’schildren’s literacy programming.

Deb Kunath has been a part of MATC and MPTV forso long, she’s almost an institution herself! She beganworking at MATC in 1980 in the counseling center aspart of the secretarial staff. Two years later, shetransferred to the Dean’s Office in the Industrial andTechnical Division of the school where she spent 9 years. Finally in 1991, Deb joined MPTV’s CommunityRelations department as an assistant. The same year, shealso became an MATC student herself when she enrolledin the Fashion Marketing program.
Along with providing administrative support to theCommunity Relations department, Deb has spent thelast 22 years assisting with the department’s specialevents, such as the Clifford Book Drive, Mr. RogersSweater Drive, Mittens and More, and the manycommunity workshops MPTV hosts throughout theyear. These special projects have been Deb’s favorite partof working in Community Relations. “I like thechallenges that come along with new projects that popup in Community Relations. This year, I’ve reallyenjoyed helping out with the Next Avenue CommunityConversation events, and I also really like working on theCommunity Cinemas that run from September to May,”said Deb.
Deb received her degree in Fashion Marketing in 2001,and has used this degree in her passion outside of MPTV.She is an accomplished seamstress, winning numerousawards at local competitions. In fact, throughout theyears Deb has won a ribbon in every single adult sewingcategory in the Wisconsin State Fair’s Textile and Craftcompetition.
Deb has “woven” together her two interests in MPTVand sewing. As a member of the American SewingGuild, Deb has gotten the group involved in MPTV’s“Mittens and More” mitten drive to help children inneed. She also sewed the costumes for the Teletubbiesand Clifford special events.
Deb says the reason she has had such a long tenure atMATC and MPTV is the people. “I love publictelevision, and I strongly believe in education. But whathas made the last 33 years so enjoyable has been thepeople I have had the fortune to work with.”
Deb lives in New Berlin with her husband Chris, towhom she has been married for 30 years.

Two-and-a-half millennia ago, a newreligion was born in northern India, generated from the ideas of a single man,the Buddha, a mysterious Indian sage whofamously gained enlightenment while he satunder a large, shapely fig tree. The Buddhanever claimed to be God or his emissary onearth. He said only that he was a humanbeing who, in a world of unavoidable painand suffering, had found a kind of serenitythat others could find, too. Thisdocumentary tells the story of his life, ajourney especially relevant in our ownbewildering times of violent change andspiritual confusion. 7/23, 7p.m. 10HD
