All of God’s Children Have a Place

But Jesus said, “Let the little children come to me, and do not stop them; for it is to such as these that the kingdom of heaven belongs.”

~ Matthew 19:14 Perspectives on children have changed over time. Some of us grew up hear-ing things like: “Children are to be seen and not heard” or “Children are only to speak when spoken to.” Sometimes adults say things like these in order to exercise some control over their environment along with the accompanying noise and activity. (continued from p. 1) the particular focus is on children. Whether or not you have children this age, as a congregation, we make promises to the children who are bap-tized and their families. I hope this theme helps us also focus on enrich-ing families also as they provide the fertile soil for their children to grow in faith. I ask the congregation to join me in praying for, supporting, and come together as we assure all children that they have a place at Bethel and at the feet of Jesus.

CONGREGATIONAL CARE “You are the light of the world.” Matthew 5:14

BETHEL CAREGIVERS SUPPORT GROUP meets once a month on the third Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. in the Old Fellowship Hall. NOTE: the next meeting will be on August 15th at the church. All are welcome! We will go out for lunch after the meeting, for those who are interested. Beth Hampton, who has experience in leading similar groups, is coordinating and leading this group. Please contact Beth at [email protected] or 703-530-0912 or Ruth Passarge, parish nurse at [email protected].

LEADERSHIP “Remember your leaders, those who spoke the word of

God to you…” Hebrews 13:7

Hello Bethel,

Council is still working hard for you, the church, and the community. We have our music program leadership firmed up with great skills in Rod Harbin and Betsy Hermann. Our faithful Bells leadership re-mains strong and amazing. Pastor Jeff has reached a milestone that culminates years of hard work and effort – all to make the future

of those he touches even more meaningful. The CREW is wisely using their time and talents and Bethel’s financial gifts to make targeted smart improvements to our facilities. Please enjoy the wonderful AC in the Old Fellowship Hall during an adult class on Sunday! Our Christian Ed team has finished up a great year of teaching the Word. I could go on and on, but don’t have much room here.

Council is also streamlining communications and project management with our steadfast Minis-try Teams and Staff. We’ve also taken some good (and sometimes boring) bites at reviewing our Constitution, bylaws, financial reporting, and budget management. But, leading is not all about bureaucracy. Over half of our monthly meeting time is dedicated to leadership issues.

We are taking earnest steps to discern where we and Bethel are called to move. Like many churches, it can seem daunting if one gets stuck in circles debating declining membership, at-tendance, giving, and general participation. Council is realizing that those things are only daunting if we believe we cannot change them, or if God is calling us to do things we may just not be comfortable with. Through Him, Bethel has unlimited potential, depth, and strength; as well as the capacity to move in new directions while maintaining what brings us all together to worship.

I encourage everyone to keep building faithful relationships inside and outside our church’s walls. Keep your eyes looking to the future. Ask God if He has plans for you and your church. Together, guided by His hand and word, I know our future is bright.

Sincerely,

Jim Lowell, Mission Council President

"Train up a child in the way he should go: and when he is old, he will

not depart from it.” Proverbs 22:6 EDUCATION

August is a busy month at Bethel's Preschool. We are getting ready for our 46th year of preparing children for kindergarten in a loving, Christian atmos-phere. We offer a 3-day-a-week class for 3 year olds as well as 3- and 5-day-a-week classes for 4 year olds. There are still a few openings for the 2017/2018 school year. If you have a child (or know someone who does) who will have turned 3 or 4 by September 30, Bethel's preschool is a great place to begin their learning experience. The children will learn and grow in a fun and safe environment as well as make new

EDUCATION (ADULT)

Volunteers needed! BEACON for Adult Literacy is looking for volunteers to teach

English to Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) in Manassas. Morning classes

are from 9:30-11:30 am and evening classes are from 7:00-9:00 pm. No experi-

ence or other language is necessary; training provided. Volunteers are also need-

ed to help with integration of technology (teaching English through computers). If

you have a strong passion for empowering others to meet their goals, email Jen at

[email protected] or call 703-368-7491 for more information. Training is Saturday, Au-

gust 12th or Saturday, August 26th.

VACATION BIBLE SCHOOL was an all-time favorite. Rome was an adventure where we met some Roman soldiers, Paul, dis-covered the early Christian church, sang, and played. We not only met our fundraising goal, but exceeded it! We raised $290 for Water for Peru, a Group Publishing mission. Just

$5 provides water for one child, for an entire year, in a remote village in Peru. This means we were able to provide water for 58 children!

Our amazing kitchen team provided delicious meals that are free to families who attend our VBS; we had a bold and hilarious team of actors who interacted with children at the Marketplace, and a phenomenal team of teenagers who acted out Paul in jail and brought to life the early Chris

tian church. We had a team of three who led open & close each evening, an amazing design-er who worked behind the scenes to prep de-tails for decorating our church, as well as a few who came in and helped with the final details to make the transformation from Bethel to Rome hours before VBS begins, a quality First-Aid team who cared for any injuries, and an awe-some Check-In crew who ensured families were welcomed as they entered our building and tracked all the details that need tracking during the week. It isn’t possible to do VBS alone – it requires many people. Truly, I could go on. I am deeply, sincerely, grateful for the hours, and the sense of humor, all the students and adults bring to VBS to make this such a fun week each year. And, if you want to help us think through what next year will bring, please let me know.

All God’s Children Have a Place

Our Christian Education team had a blast planning for the upcoming year of classes for our youngest members. Our heart for education, ministering alongside our families, supporting our community with offerings, has had

us praying and thinking for quite some time about what we can do to broaden Christian Educa-tion at Bethel for children. We have loved Offerings this year. All offerings will be used to-wards projects that we will do together from suitcases for foster children to care packages for families who have young children at the hospital. We will dedicate two or three Sundays where we will gather together to assemble these and prepare them for delivery. Families, if you’d like to deliver the donations as a family, please let us know! Parents, we are inviting you to a special coffee and breakfast on Sunday, September 17, 9:30-10:30am. In addition, we have two special guests, Jay Tobias and Mark Knauff, who have a special piggy bank gift to go home with each child. They will talk about how to help families talk about smart money planning with our youngest family members, and how we will incorporate that into our offering projects for the year. While we still have adult Sunday School meeting that day, we know this is something that you will want be a part of.

SUNDAY SCHOOL TEACHERS NEEDED The Sunday School program has teaching vacancies for the session beginning in September. The curriculum has easy-to-follow lessons so your prep time is kept to a minimum. It is fun to team-teach! Ask a friend to join you or let us introduce you to a new friend. We would like to have two teachers per class. Please prayerfully consider this opportunity.

MARK YOUR CALENDARS! RALLY DAY IS SEPTEMBER 10th! Rally Day marks the beginning of another Sunday-school year and our annual church picnic. We begin the day with one worship service at 10AM followed by the picnic. Be sure to watch the bulletin for more details in late August.

SUNDAY SCHOOL PARENT COFFEE & BREAKFAST Sunday, September 17 9:30-10:30am All parents with students in Sunday School, grades Pre-K through 6th are invited to join Nancy Cooper, Elizabeth Burnside, Pastor Jeff and Jay Tobias for breakfast.

“Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth:

Rejoice, and sing praise.” Psalm 98:4

Join the Children's & Youth Handbell choirs!

The Joyful Ringers & Spiritoso first rehearsals for the fall will be on Monday, Sep-tember 11th. The Joyful Ringers is a bell choir for 2nd-5th graders and will meet on Monday evenings from 5:30-6:00PM. Spiritoso is for ringers who are in 6th-12th grade and will meet on Monday evenings from 6:15-7:15PM. All levels of ringers are welcome to join the choirs. The older choir will be attending a youth handbell festival in Williamsburg, VA this November. Both choirs ring in church monthly. Please contact Cindy Martin ([email protected]) with any questions. We look forward to another fun year of ringing!

Adult Handbell Choir

The Bell Tower Ringers will have their first rehearsal on Monday September 11th at 7:15pm. The Bell Tower Ringers is an adult bell choir open to all adults. No music experience is necessary. We rehearse every Monday night, ring in church once per month, and will attend a handbell festival in the spring. All are welcome to join. If you are interested, please contact Deb Jacobs at [email protected] or 703-304-7986.

The launch of Music Monday is just around the corner! Mark your calendars now for September 11 beginning at 5:30pm. Children and youth, grades 1 through high school and college, are invited to join in the fun with music, activities, and food. With dinner of-fered and adult classes available, there is room for the whole fami-ly. For more information contact Rod Harbin or Pastor Jeff. Look for details and a schedule in the mail mid-August. We look forward to seeing and serving you soon!

The gym will be available for children in 1st through 5th grades who are par-ticipating in one or more music groups. A variety of organized activities will be planned for these children so that adults can stay for faith formation. Older students participating in music who are waiting for parents or younger siblings may make use of the Youth Room for studying, reading, or relaxing. You can help! We are seeking adults to share a special skill or those who enjoy creating or crafting. If you'd like to put together an activity and assist the 1st-5th graders for a 20-30 minute block of time for one or more consecutive weeks, please talk to Elizabeth Burnside, Pastor Jeff, or Rod Harbin.

To further round out Monday evening, we will offer an adult faith formation class from 6:15pm - 7:15pm. This timing allows for adults who wish to participate in the adult bell choir, adults with children in the music class or bell choir, and adults who are not involved with the music program but are interested in opportunities to grow in their faith. The curriculum will be settled in August so we can announce the plan for the fall.

A SERVICE OF THANKSGIVING FOR THE BLESSINGS WE RECEIVE FROM GOD THROUGH PETS AND ANIMALS

Sunday evening, August 13th at 6:30 p.m., Bethel will celebrate its sev-enth Blessing of the Animals. The service will be held in the grassy pic-nic area bordering Sudley Road and Plantation Lane. In case of rain, the service will be held in the Great Hall. You are invited to bring your pets – one or all - to this service. Please ensure that all pets are on a leash and under control. Water will be provided for the pets.

The unique blessings our pets and all animals bring to us, especially to those who love and care for them, will be celebrated with reflection on the “Gifts of Creation and Noah’s Ark.” This ser-vice welcomes children and pet owners to celebrate how God blesses us through His special gifts. The gift and blessing of animals is central to our understanding of the meaning of human life. We see the blessings in Genesis with the story of creation, in the great story of Noah with all aboard the ark, from the many references throughout Holy Scripture in the Prophets and Psalms to the message of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount and the new creation’s promise in the revelation of St. John.

Please join us as we celebrate the joy brought to our lives by those small and large animals that God has placed in our care. Welcome, God’s people and God’s creatures, to God’s house.

Bethel Mission & Ministry Discernment Event

On Saturday, September 16, the congregation is invited to participate in a discernment event led by Pastor Ron Qualley, the former lead pastor at Lord of Life Lutheran Church in Fairfax and Clifton. We will gather for morning refreshments between 8:30am and 9:00am so that we may start promptly at 9:00am. Bethel has had the tradition of creating a long range planning task force to develop a long-range plan. Council and Pastor Jeff felt that we should do this kind of planning as part of our normal way of leading the congregation. Pastor Qualley’s method is to involve as many people in the congregation as possible with the belief that we all are integral in the discernment process as we all seek to listen to and follow God. Registration materials will be made available by mid-August. If you have any questions, please talk with the Council President, Jim Lowell, or Pastor Jeff.

BLESSING OF THE BACKPACKS

Always remember that Jesus goes with us wherever we go and that what is im-

portant to us is important to God. We will bless all backpacks and school gear

for children and youth of all ages at both services on Sunday, August 27th.

LOCK-UP MINISTRY

Did you know that Bethel has a group of volunteers who see that the church is se-cure each night? We have many people that use our building – Bethel and com-munity groups – and, even though they always try to be good stewards of the property, we always like to check to make sure that our church building is locked up every night. These volunteers are on a rotation schedule and take on this duty for a full week when it is their turn. We are looking for help with this important ministry. If you are inter-ested and have questions, please speak with one of the current, faithful volunteers: Jim Carter, Dan Radtke or Steve Rice, or you can contact the church office. They can fill

you in on how doing lock-up works and would be willing to train you, if needed. Thank you!

“How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven.” Genesis 28: 17

- GOOD TO KNOW -
