With 32 top ranks and 34 leading ranks across four different peer groups, cubus once again achieves an impressive set of results in BARC’s BI Survey. Excellent ratings in numerous important KPIs help to consolidate its position as a rather small vendor that can deliver a high level of benefits to its customers. Companies can benefit from using outperform in terms of faster and more accurate reporting, analysis or planning, improved employee satisfaction and data quality, all of which are achieved by an above-average proportion of users compared to other BI products. The BI Survey 18 is based on findings from the world‘s largest and most comprehensive survey of business intelligence end users, conducted from March to June 2018. In total, 3,045 people responded to the survey with 2,569 answering a series of detailed questions about their use of a named product. Altogether, 36 products (or groups of products) are analyzed in detail.

The BI Survey 18 examines user feedback on BI product selection and usage across 30 criteria (KPIs) including business benefits, project success, business value, recommendation, customer satisfaction, customer experience, innovation and competitiveness.

This document contains just a selection of the headline findings for cubus. It does not show all the KPI results and focuses mainly on the positive findings.

Founded in 1992 and based near Stuttgart, Germany, cubus currently has approximately 35-40 employees and claims to have more than 350 companies using its software. 150-200 of them are direct cubus custo-mers and the remainder are served by partners.

cubus outperform is an integrated CPM solution with functionality for planning, simulation, project portfolio management and strategy implementation (cubus PM). For ad hoc reporting and dynamic OLAP analy-ses on the web, cubus EV Analytics (formerly IBM Co-gnos Executive Viewer) is integrated in outperform. The product offers predefined business content, data models and logic. Aimed at business power users, outperform has a web-based user interface resem-bling Excel.

outperform provides a flexible platform for building individual, complex business logic for CPM and plan-ning applications. The solution has no specific market or industry focus and is used by companies of various sizes and industries. However, it does have prede-fined business content and logic for integrated profit and financial planning (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), revenue and sales planning, HR planning, cost

center planning, cost allocations, investment planning and project portfolio management. Customers can completely adapt and extend the models and logic to meet their specific requirements. Following initial implementation, business power users can develop outperform applications in a self-service manner wi-thout specific programming skills. cubus EV extends outperform’s range of functions with comprehensive functionality for web-based OLAP analysis, ad hoc reporting and data visualization.

outperform uses multidimensional (Oracle Essbase, IBM Cognos TM1 or Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services) and relational databases (Oracle or Micro-soft SQL Server) for data storage. While the reposi-tory and certain budget data are stored in relational structures, budget data usually resides in multidi-mensional structures. The largest implementations in terms of concurrent users run on Oracle Essbase, but the majority of customers use Microsoft SQL Server Analysis Services. IBM Cognos TM1 is the newest database option for outperform and has the highest growth rates.

cubus outperform is an integrated CPM solu-tion for planning, simulation, project portfolio management, strategy implementation (balan-ced scorecard), ad hoc reporting and OLAP analysis. Besides its main use cases (ad hoc query, standard/enterprise reporting, budge-ting/planning and basic data analysis), outper-form is also frequently used in the context of financial consolidation and for dashboards/ scorecards. 27 percent of respondents plan to use it for dashboards/scorecards in the future.

cubus targets mid-sized companies and large corporations across all industries. 62 percent of our sample of cubus customers come from mid-sized companies (100-2,500 employees) with a median of 130 users. However, the mean of 379 users indicates there are also some significantly larger implementations.

outperform is geared to business power users with broad functionality for various BI and CPM tasks. Typical tasks carried out with outperform by business power users include viewing, navi-gating and exploring data, which demonstrates the feature-richness of the product.

Peer Groups and KPIs The BI Survey 18 features a range of different types of BI tools so we use peer groups to help identify competing products. The groups are essential to al-low fair and useful comparisons of products that are likely to compete.

The peer groups have been defined by BARC ana-lysts using their experience and judgment, with segmentation based on two key factors:

1. Usage scenario - functional peer groups are mainly data-driven and ba-sed on how customers say they use the product.

2. Regional focus - is the vendor a large international vendor with a truly global presence or does it focus on a particu-lar region? We also take into account the location of BI Survey respondents.

Americas-focused vendors: Includes products from vendors that have a significant presence in - and focus on - the Americas region.

Embedded analytics-focused products: Includes reporting and analytics products that can be embed-ded in other business applications.

The BI Survey 18 provides the reader with well-desi-gned KPI dashboards packed with concise informa-tion, which can be absorbed at a glance. The KPIs all follow these simple rules:

• Only measures that have a clear good/bad trend are used as the basis for KPIs.

• KPIs may be based on one or more measures from The BI Survey.

• Only products with samples of at least 20 - 30 (depending on the KPI) for each of the questions that feed into the KPI are included.

• For quantitative data, KPIs are conver-ted to a scale of 1 to 10 (worst to best).

• A linear min-max transformation is ap-plied, which preserves the order of, and the relative distance between, pro-ducts‘ scores.

The terms ‘top-ranked’ and ‘leader’ are used in the following KPI chart titles. ‘Top-ranked’ indicates first position. ‘Leader’ usually denotes a position in the top 25-30% of products listed in the chart.

outperform is essentially a flexible platform for building individual, complex business logic for CPM and planning applications enhanced with BI functionality for ad hoc reporting and dynamic OLAP analyses on the web. Customers seem to be quite happy with the length of their implementation projects, positio-ning cubus as a leader in three of its peer groups. In particular, predefined business content and logic for integrated profit and financial planning (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow), revenue and sales planning, HR planning, cost center planning, cost allocations, investment planning and project portfolio management is an additional option to speed up implementation projects, especially in the early stages.

Once again this year, cubus repeats its excel-lent ‘Vendor support’ ratings in The BI Survey. The vendor has been ranked top for ‘Vendor support’ in three of its peer groups for each the last five years. Customers are very satis-fied with the support they receive, highligh-ting the close relationship cubus has with its customers. The vendor listens very carefully to customers’ needs and requirements, constantly improving its software with this in-formation. Furthermore, cubus consultants are well known in the DACH region for their business expertise, excellent product knowledge and implementation experience. As a rather small German vendor with 35-40 employees, cubus sells and implements its so-lution directly in Germany, Austria and Switzer-land, but markets and implements its products internationally using a network of partners. Internationally the vendor uses its partner network in several European countries, as well as Argentina, Australia, Canada, the United States and South Africa. Partners obviously do a great job according to our survey respon-dents. Most customers seem satisfied with the level of implementation support they receive from cubus itself and its partners. cubus is obviously investing great effort in training and maintaining its partner landscape. As a result, cubus once again wins all its peer groups in The BI Survey 18, defending the top ranks it has achieved in recent years.

outperform’s comprehensive functionality for planning, simulation, project portfolio manage-ment and strategy implementation enhanced with BI functionality for ad hoc reporting and dynamic OLAP analyses on the web clearly seems to satisfy customers. Customers can address various CPM and BI topics on one common platform with different aggregation levels (e.g., strategic as well as operational planning). outperform provides a flexible platform for building individual, complex business logic for CPM and BI applications, particularly planning. Business departments need little IT support when it comes to running the system so they can concentrate on the business aspects of their activities. The results in this year’s survey show outperform to be top ranked for ‘Product satisfaction’ in all of its peer groups, significantly improving its results from last year’s survey. Problems encountered with the product are now quite rare. Indeed 67 percent of respondents state they expe- rience no significant problems at all when using outperform.

Customer satisfaction and loyalty are key goals for cubus. The vendor does not chase the latest trends in the market but focuses on satisfying customers’ business needs. Therefore, cubus listens very carefully to feedback, constantly improving its software with this information. As the survey results show, customers are largely satisfied with the vendor, its implementation partners and the product, which apparently offers good value for money. They are particularly satisfied with the support they receive, highlighting the close relationship cubus has with its custo-mers. Overall, many customers feel they can recommend using outperform for CPM and BI to other companies, which is a strong indicator of customer satisfaction.

cubus achieves leading ranks for ‘Customer experience’ in all of its peer groups. This underlines the fact that outperform is an easy to use CPM and BI product, which can be used in a self-service manner in business departments with minimal IT involvement, offering good performance and flexibility for users. Indeed, ‘Flexibility’, ‘Ease of use for report recipients’ and ‘Fast query performance’ are the main reasons why companies buy cubus outperform. A strong rating in the ‘Sales experience’ KPI confirms that cubus sincerely cares for its prospects and customers. In our opinion, the ‘Customer experience’ KPI is now more important than ever as the market for CPM and BI products becomes ever more crowded, particularly in the DACH region where cubus is based.

cubus’ competitive win rate – based on the percentage of deals won in competitive evaluations against other vendors – is impres-sive. The vendor is way ahead of many rivals in all of its peer groups, clearly proving that it does a great job in competitive evaluations to convince customers. The vendor’s consul-ting team plays its part in this success, but outperform is also a very flexible product that can meet a variety of challenges in the areas of CPM and BI. cubus often participates in competitive evaluations itself, particularly in the DACH region, and does implementation projects using its own consulting team. Its consultants possess a high degree of specific industry sector expertise, which often per-suades customers to choose cubus ahead of competitors.

‘Competitiveness’ combines the ‘Conside-red for purchase’ and ‘Competitive win rate’ KPIs. cubus’ strong results, particularly in the ‘Competitive win rate’ KPI, contribute to its leading position for ‘Competitiveness’. While its competitive win rate is outstanding, this rather small German vendor does not have the international market presence to be widely considered for purchase, heavily relying on partners outside its home market. In contrast to the results in this year’s BI Survey, cubus claims that much of its growth today is in international markets and not just in the DACH region. cubus EV Analytics (the acquired pro-duct formerly known as IBM Cognos Executive Viewer, which is used for ad hoc reporting and dynamic OLAP analyses on the web) is a key factor in cubus’ current growth.
