TheBig12Conferencehasestablishedaconsistentlevelofnationalsuccessonthefieldandintheclassroomasitentersits14thseasonin2009-10. Sinceitbeganplayin1996-97,theConferencecanboastof34teamcrownsandover400individualNCAAChampionships.Thesuccesscontinuedthrough2008-09asTexasA&Mcapturednationaltitlesinmen’sgolfaswellasmen’sandwomen’soutdoortrack&field.TheleagueplacedtwoteamsintheBowlChampionshipSeriesforthefifthtimeandhadateamplayfortheBCSNationalChampionshipforthesixthseason.Inaddition,twovolleyballteamsadvancedtothesemifinalsoftheNCAAChampionshipandOklahomaplayedintheWom-en’sFinalFour.MissourisoftballandTexasbaseballpunchedticketstotheCol-legeWorldSeries. Amongindividualhonors,SallyKipyego(TexasTech)becamethefirstNCAADivisionIfemaleormalerunnertowinthreeconsecutivecrosscountrynationalchampionships.ShewasnamedtheHondaAwardwinnerforthethirdseasonas the nation’s top female cross country athlete, becoming just the eighthathletetowintheawardthreetimesinanysport.JennyBarringer(Colorado)claimedtheHondaAwardforTrack&FieldwhileOleksandrNedovyesov(Okla-
homaState)wasnamedITA/Campbell’sTennisPlayeroftheYear. Forthefourthtimeinits13-yearhistoryaBig12student-athletewontheHeismanTrophy.TheBig12alsoestablishedahigh-watermark,asforthefirsttime in the74-yearhistoryof theHeismanTrophy fourof the topfivevote-gettershailedfromthesameconference,includingaward-winnerSamBradford(Oklahoma). Overthepastfiveseasonsatotalof13NCAAtrophieshavebeenhoistedbyBig12institutions,withatleastonenationalcrownwoninallbutoneyearfortheConference,includingeachofthepast12seasons. TheBig12leadsallconferenceswithitssixappearancesinBCStitlegames.Leaguesquadshaveplayedforthefootballnationalchampionshipsixtimesinthelastnineyearswithberthsin16BCSgamesoverall,includingtwoeachin2007and2008.TheBig12ledallconferenceswithfiveteamsrankedinthefi-nal2008BCSStandings.Inaddition,anall-timehighnineleagueplayersearnedconsensusAll-Americarecognitionthispastseason,morethananyothercon-ference.

Inbasketball,10women’sandninemen’steamshaveadvancedtotheirre-spectiveFinalFoursinthepasteightseasonsastheBig12continuesitsplaceamongtheeliteintercollegiateathleticconferences.Thesixmen’sFinalFourparticipantssince2002aretiedforthemostofanyconference.Numerousna-tionalhonorshavebeenwonbybasketballstudent-athletesduringtheleague’shistory. The Big 12 had a national player of the year honoree for the thirdstraightyearwhenBlakeGriffin(Oklahoma)wastheconsensuswinnerin2008-09. CourtneyParis(Oklahoma)gavetheconferenceaconsensusAll-Americaselectioninwomen’sbasketballfortheninthstraightseason. TheBig12anditsmemberinstitutionsarecommittedtoacompetitiveenvi-ronmentwheresportsmanshipandfairplaytakecenterstage.Whetheronthefield,intheclassroom,orwithinthecommunitythestudent-athletes,admin-istrators,coachesandgameofficialsoftheBig12supportthehighestidealsinsportsmanship. Big12student-athletesalsodowellingarneringnationalacademicrecogni-tion.SarahPavan(Nebraska)wasnamedAcademicAll-AmericaoftheYearinvolleyball in2006and2007byESPNTheMagazineandCollegeSports Infor-mationDirectorsofAmericawitha4.0grade-point average inBiochemistry.Shealsowonthenationalacademichonorpresentedforallsportsin2006-07andwasnamedrecipientof theprestigious2006-07Honda-BroderickAwardasCollegiateWomanAthleteoftheYear.SheisthefirstathletesincetheBig12wasformedtoearntheaccolade.Initshistory,theconferencehasover330academichonorees,averagingmorethan25eachseason. TheBig12canboastofotherstoriesthatcombineonandoffthefieldsuc-cess.PatienceKnight(TexasTech)wastherecipientoftheHondaInspirationAwardin2008,giventoanoutstandingfemalecollegeathletewhoovercomesadversitytoexcelinhersport.Shewasdiagnosedwithacanceroustumorin2007,butreboundedtowinAll-Americahonorsatthe2008NCAAIndoorTrack&FieldChampionships. Competitiveexcellence, scholarshipandsportsmanshipareallequal com-ponentsof theBig12philosophy. All-Big12 teamsandAcademicAll-Big12squadsarerecognizedforeachsportattheendoftheirrespectiveseasons. Attheendofeachacademicyear,theConferencehonorsitstopmaleandfe-malestudent-athleteswiththeBig12AthleteoftheYearandBig12Sportsper-sonoftheYearawards. Institutionscanalsonominatestudent-athletesfortheprestigiousDr.Pren-ticeGauttPostgraduateScholarshipsattheendofeachacademicyear.Atotalof225scholarshavereceivedover1.3millioninpostgraduatefinancialaidthroughthefirst13yearsoftheprogram. TheBig12sponsors21sports. Men’ssquadsincludebaseball,basketball,crosscountry,football,golf,indoortrack&field,outdoortrack&field,swim-ming&diving,tennisandwrestling.Women’steamsarefieldedinbasketball,crosscountry,golf,gymnastics,indoortrack&field,outdoortrack&field,soc-cer,softball,swimming,tennisandvolleyball. The conference ismade up of 12 institutions that have sharedmany tra-ditionalrivalriesthroughouttheirhistories.Memberschoolsinclude-BaylorUniversity,UniversityofColorado,IowaStateUniversity,UniversityofKansas,KansasStateUniversity,UniversityofMissouri,UniversityofNebraska,Univer-sityofOklahoma,OklahomaStateUniversity,UniversityofTexas,TexasA&MUniversityandTexasTechUniversity. The institutions created a league that encompasses seven states, over 45millionpeopleandtelevisionhouseholdsin18ofthetop100marketswithinitsgeographicfootprint. Theconferenceconductschampionshipsfor20ofits21sports.Eachcham-pionshiphelpstodetermineteamsand/or individualsthatwill representtheConference in national postseason competition. The winner of the Big 12footballchampionshipgameearnstheleague’sberthintotheprestigiousBowlChampionshipSeries. InthelastseveralyearstheBig12hasincreaseditsbowlagreementsandexpanded televisionopportunities forall sports throughcontractswithABC/ESPNandFSN.Mostrecently,theleaguerenewedandexpandeditsmulti-yeararrangementwithABC/ESPN,Inc.Thenewcontractbeganin2008-09. Initsfirst13years,theConferencehasdistributedmorethan$1.1billiontoits12memberinstitutions.
