The Big Picture Season
SEASON 2014-2015
UNIVERSITY OF WYOMING
Theatre & Dance
Imagining the end point of a work can be difficult when one is caught up in its middle. Over the past year, the former Fine Arts building has undergone considerable transformation, with much work remaining. But as siting and excavation end, and foundations, frames, and walls go up, the new Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts is beginning to take shape.
2014-2015 is a season of old favorites reinvigorated and reimagined and new works that tackle age-old themes in fresh new ways. The Exit Interview, a new comedy by playwright-in-residence William Missouri Downs, turns the classic HR send off on its head in hilariously epic fashion. Pierre Corneille's 17th century farce, The Liar, gets an uproarious reworking by impish wordsmith David Ives, whose self-proclaimed "translaptation" of the play has modern audiences howling. The Nutcracker ballet, a holiday tradition with patrons of all ages, returns to the UW stage with even more costumes and scenic pieces inspired by Laramie's Ivinson Mansion. In The Shakespeare Project, three of the Bard's beloved comedies are stripped down to the essentials in the innovative style of the Actors From The London Stage, who will also be giving a special performance of Macbeth. Inside/Out presents new dance works in a novel space, emphasizing current trends in contemporary dance. And Leonard Bernstein's oft-recast comic opera and much-loved tribute to continental music, Candide, gets a playful new rendering on the UW stage.
We can't wait for you to join us this season for a front row seat to the emerging Buchanan Center for the Performing Arts and a fantastically ambitious set of productions. See you at the theatre!
New Season, New Perspective
Special thanks to those who help to support our production season:
Winner of a rolling Premiere by the national neW Play netWork All sacred cows imaginable are headed for the dinner table in this comedy by playwright-in-residence William Missouri Downs. When his university sacks him, Professor Dick Fig is forced to endure an excruciating exit interview. What begins as small talk careens into a delirious comic exploration of religion, love, politics, and the meaning of life. Downs’ fast-moving comedy ricochets between existential interludes, politically radicalized cheerleaders, a pompous newsman, and soccer moms re-inventing the scientific method, before reaching its surprising conclusion. (Contains isolated instances of language and themes that some may find objectionable.)
“The laughs keep coming — even as audience members might think with a twinge, ‘Ouch, that might be me.’” — Orlando Sentinel
“A rip-roaring send-up of Americanized Brechtian angst that had the audience howling.”

A troupe from the Actors from the London Stage (AFtLS) joins us at the end of the 2015 eminent Artist residency for MACBetH, Shakespeare’s renowned “Scottish play” and one of his best-known tragedies. Victorious Scottish general Macbeth has a vaunting ambition to be king, one easily stoked by the dark prophecies of three mysterious witches and the desires of his ruthless wife. But once Macbeth’s gory rise to power commences, there can be no end to the savagery. AFtLS is one of the oldest established touring Shakespeare theater companies in the world. Housed and workshopped in england with academic tours booked through the auspices of Shakespeare at notre Dame, this program is truly unique.

The best of all possible worlds?

Conducted by
Dr. Michael Griffith
A comic opera based on the novella by VoltaireLove stings in this fast-paced comic opera adapted from Voltaire’s satirical novella and joined with high-spirited music by Leonard Bernstein and lyrics by Richard Wilbur, Stephen Sondheim, John Latouche, Lillian Hellman, Dorothy Parker, and Bernstein.
Wild adventures are afoot as we trace the travels and travails of the naïve Candide, his beloved Cunegonde, and a host of colorful characters throughout the Old World and the new.
“Candide was written as a kind of personal love letter to european music. It’s an American’s Valentine to europe...it is a pastiche, it’s eclectic, that’s the whole point of it...it is a kind of salute to everything I love in Gilbert & sullivan, in Offenbach, in Bellini....”
— Leonard Bernstein
