OTHERS!That was the one-word telegram that Salvation Army founder William Booth sent to Salvation Army Corps members all over the world at Christmastime. It was a reminder to the soldiers that service is a pillar of the Corps. Just as Jesus committed Himself to saving those in need, so you must commit yourself to serving others. This emblem gives you the opportunity— indeed, the privilege!—to engage in a project that will be of service to your community.

ZOOMING INYou will be “Zooming In” as you simultaneously “Go Do See Be” the community around you, and work towards earning your OTHERS emblem. You will be investigating a need within your community, planning and preparing for your project, acting on your project idea, reflecting on its effectiveness and the impact it had on you and those you served, demonstrating your results to your guide, and celebrating all of your hard work!

#ONE MORE THING

The word others has been deemed to encompass the Salvation Army’s DNA. In fact, it is the name of our international social enterprise. As you complete the service project, think about how you can encompass the spirit of others. You are not just helping those in need! Instead, you will be helping those in need gain the important skills needed to help themselves. In the process, both you and those you serve will learn about yourselves, each other, and the gift of love that Jesus has given us.

INVESTIGATIONFirst, identify the need. Sometimes, when we want to help others, we assume we know what their needs are, but we haven’t really asked. For example, you may identify a local school where literacy rates are low and assume that they need tutors for the children. Upon further investigation, however, you may find that the students are coming to school hungry and cannot focus on the teaching in the classroom; what they really need is assistance in establishing food resources for the families. Or, you may see a community center whose gym needs to be painted. However, on further discussion with the community center director, you discover that what they really need is for someone to organize a basketball program for the boys who drop in after school.

Next, find your passion! Although the ultimate goal is to help others, your service project should also encompass your interests and talents.

TASK

Take a look at the community around you. Investigate its needs. Talk to those who are already helping and to the people for whom you hope to provide a service. From there, identify the need.

_______________________________________________________________________________________IDENTIFIED NEED

TASK

Take a quiet moment to allow your ideas to take shape. With a piece of paper and a writing tool, jot down some ideas about possible avenues of pursuit. Here are a few questions to help spark your thinking:

+ What causes are you passionate about: education? the environment? helping those in need of homes, food, and/or clothes? sports? animals?

+ Do you like working with children or do you prefer adults? Do you enjoy spending time with senior citizens?

+ Would you prefer to complete your project individually or with others?

+ Are there community centers that have programs or people that you could work with to make your idea a reality?

Then, talk to your guide or resource person! Once you have some ideas for a service project, you need to have a discussion with your guide and/or resource person(s) about your idea. If you are having difficulty narrowing down your ideas, or if you need help thinking through the details of your project, this is an opportunity to receive help.

PLANNING AND PREPARATION

TASK

State your service project in 2-4 sentences.

Now, create the structure for your service project. Here are some things to think about as you build out your service project.

Logistics

TimingAlso, you must determine how much time the project will take. Plan a timeline that includes the span of the project, as well as how many hours a week you will spend on it.

BudgetYou will want to plan your project around how much money you have to spend. Create an itemized budget for any supplies, transportation costs, or special equipment that you might need.

Signature: ___________________________________ Date: _____________________________________

TASK

Plan where you will carry out your project. If this requires transportation, be sure to outline how you will get there. For instance, will you take public transportation? Or, will someone be in charge of driving? Also, be sure to arrange your arrival and departure times from the site. Be sure to be punctual!

TASK

Create a timeline! Include how many hours a week you will spend working on the project as well as what you plan to accomplish each week. Feel free to use the timeline worksheets provided or create your own.

NOTE: It is perfectly acceptable to revise this timeline as you implement your project. Be sure to note your changes as they occur!

TASK

Make a list of all the things you need to build out your project, along with estimated costs.

TASK

When your project is sufficiently outlined, your guide and/or resource person(s) will give approval for the idea.

ACTIONOnce you have approval, it’s time to take action!

REFLECTION

TASK

Begin the exciting task of working on your service project! Follow the timeline and budget you have established, allowing for adjustments as needed and/or recommended by your guide.

NOTE: You will want to make sure that you log the work you complete, and that you take pictures and/or video. We also strongly recommend that you keep a notebook or other form of documentation of your work. This way, you can demonstrate your results as well as have a record of fond memories for you and others to enjoy! Note your changes as they occur!

TASK

Look back at your service log, videos, pictures, notebook and/or other documentation of your work. Ask yourself the following questions and record your thoughts in your notebook of fond memories for you and others to enjoy! Note your changes as they occur!

+ What were the results of the project?

+ Did the service provided meet the needs of those intended?

+ What events were critical in bringing the project to fruition?

+ What stood out to you the most?

+ How did you feel about your project?

+ What did you learn?

+ What difference did the project make to the community?

+ Did anything surprise you about the project?

+ Was your experience different from what you expected?

+ What did you enjoy most/least about your experience in completing this project?

+ Did those you worked with learn a new skill?

+ What did the people you work with teach you? How did you learn from those you helped?

+ What did you learn about the community that you served?

+ What continue to be some important needs of those in the community?

CELEBRATE!

TASK

Submit your work to your guide for completion of the emblem.

NOTE: This can be in any of the forms mentioned above and approved by your guide.

TASK

Celebrate the accomplishments of your project either with your group, your guide, or the community in which you worked. Thank God for the opportunity you had to share your gifts and resources with others.

Finally, thank God for giving you the opportunity to learn from those you have helped and for giving the gift of bringing new, inspiring people into your life!

TAKE A CLOSER LOOK!

Extend your service project! How can you take the same idea and scale it up to help others outside of the community? Perhaps you will consider working with another group in another part of the country to implement your project. Or, you might wish to create a manual outlining your project, so that other Corps members can benefit from your wonderful ideas.

The opportunities to enact the spirit of OTHERS is endless!

GUIDE’S RESOURCES

The Salvation Army Adventure Corps: Rangers GR-1 Others

The purpose of the Others emblem is for the boys to build out a service project. At the same time that they will make an important contribution to their community, they will learn more about the concept of others, an important pillar of the Salvation Army’s work. When the boy(s) begin a service project, we highly encourage you to review this important concept. The two resources below were helpful in compiling the material for the Others emblem and might be a good starting point when exploring William and Catherine Booth’s use of the word and its importance to the Corps:

www.tradeforhope.com/about-others/

https://stevesimms.wordpress.com/2014/08/06/full-gospel-salvation-army-style-others-or-jesus-finding-balance/

You should be ready and willing to guide the boy(s) through the planning and implementation of their project. If you deem it necessary, find a mentor for the boy who is an expert in the area of choice. In any case, the boy(s) should be closely tutored so that he develops fulfilling tasks and a reasonable budget.

It is of utmost importance that the Others emblem be viewed as an opportunity for the boys to learn from those they plan to serve. Those who will benefit from their project are undoubtedly in need, and a well-thought-out project will be most welcome.

However, the communities in which the boy(s) will work must not be seen simply as places that will benefit from the boys’ good works. The boys, too, should realize that communities in need are filled with caring, capable people, who have much to teach them as well. Reinforce the notion that they should serve with humility and respect, representing Corps values at every turn.

X Differentiation point: The project(s) may be completed individually or in groups, depending on the scope of the project. It would also be acceptable to plan a project as a whole group, as long as each boy takes an active part in the planning and implementation processes, and individually documents his work.

X Differentiation point: Some boys will need to fundraise in order to complete the emblem. Guide him (or them) to devise ways to do so. Some resources to consider are:

X Differentiation point: Be sure to adhere to all procedures—or make sure the boy(s) adhere to all procedures—concerning transportation to sites and supervision of projects.

X Differentiation point: If the project requires internet research, taking pictures, or video/audio recording, be sure that the boy follows all rules regarding the ethical searching for and using of information. Internet research should reflect Corps values; any photography or videography should respect the privacy of those who have not consented to be photographed or recorded.

X Differentiation point: Boys who have faced certain struggles in their young lives may be in a unique position to help others. For instance, boys who have struggled with addiction may be particularly effective in working with those who wrestle with the same challenges. Boys who have worked to overcome certain learning disabilities may be particularly good at working with those who have similar diagnoses. Encourage boys to see their life experiences as potential resources for helping others! Of course, they may choose to pursue a project unrelated to their experiences, which is acceptable as well.

X Differentiation point: Multilingual children should consider taking part in projects where their language skills are an asset. For instance, a Spanish-speaker might be particularly helpful in an immigration center or a bilingual reading club. Again, guide the boys to see their unique character traits as funds of knowledge!

X Differentiation point: The Celebration(s) outlined in the manual may vary, depending on your time and resources. You may wish to organize an event for the boys and their caregivers. Alternatively, you could simply take a moment to praise the boys and have them congratulate each other on their hard work.

GUIDE’S RESOURCES

CLOSINGWhen engaging in a service project, you might wish to read, or re-read, the Beatitudes (Matthew 5:1-15, NIV). We suggest that you ask the boys how they are helping God’s blessed children. In addition, the boys should consider ways in which working with others teaches them and strengthens their character.

Matthew 51 Now when he saw the crowds, he went up on a mountainside and sat down. His disciples came to him,2 and he began to teach them, saying:3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.4 Blessed are those who mourn, for they will be comforted.5 Blessed are the meek, for they will inherit the earth.6 Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they will be filled.7 Blessed are the merciful, for they will be shown mercy.8 Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.9 Blessed are the peacemakers, for they will be called sons of God.10 Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.11 “Blessed are you when people insult you, persecute you and falsely say all kinds of evil against you because of me.12 Rejoice and be glad, because great is your reward in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.13 You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled by men.14 You are the light of the world. A city on a hill cannot be hidden.”

It is our hope and prayer that you and the boys find fulfillment in a project that suits the boy or group of boys!
