DEVELOPMENT OF MICROBIAL GROWTH IN FUELS
DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
General rule: Wherever fuel and water come into contact in a
storage or distribution system microbial contamination is likely to
occur.
6 2016-11-02
SOURCES OF CONTAMINATION
DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
• Freshly refined fuel contains some water. This separates out as the
fuel cools down.
• Atmospheric condensation: humidity in the air in the storage tank
condenses out and adds to the water bottom. • Rain or snow may enter the tank via sampling ports, breather
vents or ill -fitting seals on floating roofs. • Transport or storage in tankers or barges can result in
contamination from ballast water.

CONSEQUENCES OF MICROBIAL GROWTH
• Fuel Haziness
• Degradation of Additives
• Microbially Induced Corrosion
• Odor
• Filter Plugging
• Sludge Formation

QUICK TESTS
- Rapid kits:
- Just a qualitative image;
- Quick Test Kit: rapid screening –
bacteria &fungi, yeasts;
- Can show: negligible, moderate or
heavy contamination.

QUICK TESTS
- Microbial Test Kits:
- Simple test or complex;
- Qualitative and
evaluative;
- With incubation.
2016-11-02 10 DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
Laboratory complex TESTS
- Base of methodology: ASTM E 1259-10, Standard Practice for Evaluation of Antimicrobials in
Liquid Fuel – Boiling Point below 390°C;
- Good confluent growth is established in the unpreserved samples of each formulation from T0
and T7, after which time the biocide additions are made;
- Growth is then assessed in specific intervals: T9, T14, T15, T21, zT22,T28 and T30, with the
plates incubated at 25°C for fungi and 30°C for bacteria.
- Samples are taken from fuel or from the bottom of the vessel.
- The innocula consists of the following species:
- Pseudomonas aeruginosa;
- Hormoconis resinae;
- Yarrowia (former Candida) tropicalis.

One solution:
KATHON® FP 1.5 BIOCIDE
FUEL PROTECTION BIOCIDE
It combines exceptional activity with broad spectrum performance.
It is effective at very low use levels against all commonly occurring
fuel contaminants (bacteria, fungi and yeast).
The active ingredients are non-persistent in the environment, thus
giving the product good environmental acceptability.
2016-11-02 13 DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
The active ingredients of KATHON® FP 1.5 are identified using the
IUPAC nomenclature as:
- 5-chloro-2-methyl-3(2H)isothiazoline
- 2-methyl-3(2H)isothiazoline.
What is KATHON ® FP 1.5?

Efective at very low use levels against all microbial species:
- bacteria,
- fungi,
- yeasts.
Broad Spectrum Activity
2016-11-02 17 DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
KATHON® FP 1.5 causes immediate inhibition of growth on coming into contact
with a microorganism.
Growth inhibition rapidly becomes irreversible and results in cell death.
The time to achieve eradication varies according to the extent of contamination
and the type of microorganisms present.
Rapid Inhibition of Microbial Growth and Enzyme Synthesis
2016-11-02 18 DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
Fuel treated with KATHON® FP 1.5 will remain protected from contamination over
extended periods of time. It will also resist contamination if re-inoculated from
another source.
In studies conducted over an 8 week period, the fuel treated with KATHON® FP
1.5 remained free from contamination for the duration of the trial.
Long Term Preservation
2016-11-02 19 DOWNSTREAM Conference, Ramada Park Hotel
Complete System Protection
The partitioning characteristics of KATHON® FP 1.5 ensure that it is present
in both the fuel and water phases. This enables:
- Eradication of contamination in the water bottom.
- Protection of the fuel as it is transferred through the distribution system.
Results from computer modelling indicate that after a series of 10
transfers, between 60% (fuel/water ratio of 100/1) and 97% (fuel/water ratio
of 10, 000 / 1) of the KATHON® FP 1.5 originally dosed is retained in the
fuel.

Proven Effectiveness
The effectiveness of KATHON® FP 1.5 has been proven over a
number of years and it has extensive approvals endorsing its use in a
wide range of fuel types.

Widely Approved
Reflecting its world leading status, KATHON® FP 1.5 has wide ranging
approvals from both regulators and manufacturers. These approvals confirm the
suitability of KATHON® FP 1.5 for use, in such stringently controlled fuels as Jet Al
and Military diesel.
