The Birth of Jesus - Luke 2:1-18
In those days a decree went out from Caesar Augustus that all the world should be enrolled.
This was the first enrollment, when Quirin'i-us was governor of Syria.
And all went to be enrolled, each to his own city.
And Joseph also went up from Galilee, from the city of
Nazareth, to Judea, to the city of David, which is called
Bethlehem, because he was of the house and lineage of
David, to be enrolled with Mary, his betrothed, who was with
child.
And while they were there, the time came for her to be
delivered.
And she gave birth to her first-born son and wrapped him in
swaddling cloths, and laid him in a manger, because there was
no place for them in the inn.
And in that region there were shepherds out in the field,
keeping watch over their flock by night.
And an angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of
the Lord shone around them, and they were filled with fear.
And the angel said to them, "Be not afraid; for behold, I bring
you good news of a great joy which will come to all the
people;
For to you is born this day in the city of David a Savior, who
is Christ the Lord.
And this will be a sign for you: you will find a babe wrapped
in swaddling cloths and lying in a manger."
And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying, "Glory to God in
the highest, and on earth peace among men with whom he is pleased!"
When the angels went away from them into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, "Let us go over to Bethlehem
and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has made known to us."
And they went with haste, and found Mary and Joseph, and the babe lying in a manger.
And when they saw it they made known the saying which had been told them concerning this child; and all who heard
it wondered at what the shepherds told them.
But Mary kept all these things, pondering them in her heart.
And the shepherds returned, glorifying and praising God for all they had heard and seen, as it had been told them.

St. Athanasius the Great is a parish under the spiritual and
ecclesial oversight of His Eminence Metropolitan
Methodios of the Metropolis of Boston, Greek Orthodox
Archdiocese of America, under the jurisdiction of The
Ecumenical Patriachate of Constantinople.
The St. Athanasius the Great Greek Orthodox Church in
Arlington, Massachusetts strives to be the living witness of
our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. Our mission as a parish
is to “practice hospitality” (Romans 12:13), as St. Paul so
exhorts. Thus it is our rich blessing to strive and bring the
Light of Christ to all of God’s people, through Orthodox
Christian tradition, education and philanthropy. We seek
to serve the spiritual needs of our faithful parishioners
through the sacramental life of the Church. By means of
outreach and faith in God, we continue our growth as a
living Church by inviting others into the Orthodox faith
through Baptism and/or Chrismation, and educating them
through the establishment of our Christian ministries,
programs, schools and philanthropic activities.

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,
Already we are preparing for Christmas. The forty days of preparation before Christmas are
sometimes called Advent--meaning Christ’s “arrival.” The church invites us to use this time to
focus our minds and hearts on the true meaning of the Birth of Christ--the arrival of the Son of
God into our world. Soon, we will be celebrating Christmas--the incarnation and birth of our Lord
Jesus--who became the little helpless human baby of a poor, prayerful, young woman in Palestine.
In other words, the arrival of Immanuel, the name which means God-is-with-us.
Why did He do this? Why did God become one of us humans? As the reflection by Fr. Anthony
Coniaris, inside this issue of Askisis, reminds us--Christ came in order to express His love and
save us all from sin and death, because He cares for us.
Let us remind ourselves daily of His care: “If he cares for me, then I can never give up hope...
Because He came as a little child, I have a purpose as His child.” Let us reach out to Him, the
Prince of Peace, in the midst of our struggles, and ask Him to bring His Peace to our hearts.
But we have to do our part to be at peace. This time of year can be a very busy time for many of
us. Let us pay attention to the choices and commitments we make, that we do them out of love and
gratitude to Him, not only to fulfill others’ expectations. This will help us to be at peace, even in
the midst of our busy lives.
And in this time of turmoil in our country and around the world, let us not look to human beings
and institutions to provide solace and security. “Put not your trust in princes nor in sons of men,
with whom is no salvation… Happy is he that hath the God of Jacob for his help, whose hope is
in the Lord his God” (Psalm 146). Whoever is president of our country, he or she cannot fulfill the
basic needs of ourselves and our society. We need to look to God for His peace, as we pray in the
Divine Liturgy “for the peace from above and the salvation of our souls,” as well as “the peace of
the whole world, the stability of the holy churches of God, and for the union of all.”
I love to pray the following line from the Akathist Hymn to Our Sweetest Lord and Savior Jesus
Christ during times of turmoil and anxiety in my daily life: “Jesus, King of peace, bestow Thy
peace upon me.” This prayer is all the more appropriate as we prepare for Christmas, when we
welcome Christ as the fulfillment of the Old Testament prophecy: “Unto us a child is born… and
he shall be called…Prince of peace.”
Looking ahead to New Years and Theophany... a time of spiritual New Year's resolutions... What
better way to start the New Year than to have our homes blessed? I would love to offer home
blessings to as many as possible during the month of January. Please allow me this honor to visit
with you in your home and to offer God’s blessings. To request a home blessing, please complete
the slip on page 21 and mail it to the parish office - or email - [email protected], phone,
or text (617) 733 – 1045. My home blessing schedule in January will be Tuesday, Wednesday,
Thursday, and Friday, between 10am and 3pm, and Tuesday and Thursday evenings till 9; and
Saturday and Sunday evenings by appointment.
May the Peace of Christ Abide in our Hearts and in our Parish + Fr. Aaron

Catechetical Sunday School News
November was the month of restarting our music and hymns program with the help of Alexis Mitchell
and the participation of all of our classes and teachers. The children are learning some of the Liturgy
hymns with the goal of singing them in Church before too long! All our students are very excited about
this new activity and their voices sound truly angelic! A big thank you to all who support and encourage
this activity.
Children with our music teacher
Alexis Mitchell learn how to chant.
The boys can also hold the ‘ison’!
As Christmas time approaches, our Catechetical School students, teachers and families participate in
many service projects and philanthropic efforts. This is a blessed opportunity for all of us to thank God
for the gift of His Son to us on that first Christmas Day, and to show our love and appreciation towards
our neighbors and those in need.
On Saturday, December 10th children and teachers of the Catechetical school will join other
organizations of our community for a visit to the Hellenic Nursing Home in Canton, MA. The children
will make and bring along Christmas cards to distribute to the residents. This has always been a well-
attended, memorable and heartwarming annual event, so please, come and join us.
On Saturday December 17th, the Catechetical School and Greek School teachers and parents will host
the annual Communion breakfast. Dads will prepare tasty pancakes, and it is rumored that a special guest
will pay his annual visit to the children of St. Athanasius! Please, bring along a toy/gift in support of our
‘Big Wishes Gift Drive’ for ‘The Home of Little Wanderers’, an effort coordinated by our first grade
class and their teachers Eleni and Marianna Terzakis.
Preparations for the annual ‘Children’s Christmas Pageant’ are in full swing! Practices are held in
Church from 12:15pm -1:10pm each Sunday. This beloved annual celebration is scheduled for Sunday,
December 18th, immediately following the Divine Liturgy. Come and enjoy our young children as they
make this beautiful Christmas offering!
The December monthly staff meeting will be taking place on Sunday, December 11, at 12:15pm.
Merry Christmas, Καλα Χριστούγεννα to all of our students, families, and friends!

GOYA NEWS
Hello GOYAns!
November was a fun and exciting month!
In the beginning of the month, we hosted our annual Family Glendi. Thank you to all the families
who attended and donated items that made the event possible! We all had a wonderful time and it
was a great success.
Later on in the month, we all came together to bake pies for our Thanksgiving Pie Sale. We would
like to thank everyone who supported our GOYA, as well as everyone who came to help bake the
pies. Our bake sale had a tremendous turnout, and everyone was amazed at how beautiful the pies
looked and tasted!
Thanksgiving is a special time for giving back, and we are very proud to have donated 10 turkeys
to support the St. Athanasius’ donation to the Home for Little Wanderers!
December is a busy month filled with Goya projects we hope will touch and help the lives of many
persons. We will decorate wreaths, along with the Christmas tree in the church hall, in preparation
for our sales during the Christmas season! As always, we will decorate cookies to be donated to
Rosie's Place, and make Christmas Cards for the senior citizens at the Hellenic Nursing Home.
We are also very excited to share our warmth and caring hearts with the seniors at the Nursing
Home when we visit with our church parish!
Lastly, we extend a warm thank you to the Boretos family for hosting our Christmas party!
Yours sincerely,
Chris Dakopoulos

A Thank You Note …
Dear Friends,
We’d like to thank you for your support at our Rembetika & Laika Dance on Friday, November 11th. It
was fantastic to see so many of our parishioners from various ministries enjoying a wonderful evening
of fun and fellowship. The very talented Kosta Makredes and Company provided awesome
entertainment, which kept us dancing late into the night.
Thanks to all of you, it was a huge success!!!
We would especially like to thank our St. Barbara’s Philoptochos for making the delicious baklava and
melomakarona we served for dessert and our Parish Council for grilling, your help in the kitchen, and
bartending for our event. We also had various ‘elves’ who helped throughout the event, from creating
the beautiful flyer, ironing our ‘karedakia’ (doilies) for the tables, and generously donating ingredients,
mezedakia, drinks, supplies and decorations.
Our events are always more enjoyable and successful when we work together!

LITTLE HALOS News and Announcements
On November 8, our school celebrated the “Synaxis of the Archangels”, the patrons of Little Halos; students
and families attended the Divine Liturgy.
In preparation for the celebration of Little Halos’ patron saints The Taxiarches (Archangel Michael and Gabriel),
Ms. Katina Ioakimidis (Chryssa’s grandmother) helped the children to make prosforo (holy bread.)
For the rest of the month of November, Little Halos’ students were very busy with lots of hands-on learning about
the olive tree, as this is the time of year for harvesting olives from the trees. They learned all about its fruit, the
significance and importance in both Greek culture and the Orthodox faith. Children tasted different types of olives,
green and black, and rated their favorites. They had fun learning how in ancient Greece people rewarded athletes
with a wreath made out of olive branches, known as “Kotinos”. Children also painted an olive branch on a cut out
amphorae, a type of vase/container that was used in ancient Greece to store olive oil. Finally, they looked through
paintings of olive trees by famous artists, such as Van Gogh and Theofilos.
Among our many activities, the end of the month was dedicated on the importance of the Thanksgiving holiday,
and giving thanks. Our School joined The Scholastic Book Club Pajama Drive. Our students will donate PJs and
Scholastic will donate a new book along with those pajamas to be given to children living in homeless shelters.
This in turn will inspire and encourage our little ones to help others.

A great thank you goes to Ms. Stacey Ioakimidis, Chryssa’s mom, who prepared a voting lesson for our students
during election week.
Another big thank you also goes to Ms. Eleni Vastis for offering the special service of Artoklasia for her son
Panormiti and for our school's name day.
Lastly, a big thank you to all of our Little Halos families who donated many frozen turkeys for the Home of
Little Wanderers.

The Blessing of our Homes at Epiphany A beautiful custom in our Holy Greek Orthodox Church, following the days of the Epiphany feast, is the home blessing. The priest visits the homes of parishioners to perform the Agiasmo and to bless the family. If you wish to have your home blessed, please fill out the slip below and mail it to the church. Father Aaron will call you to schedule his visit. We thank you and wish you a healthy and most prosperous New Year. When Christ entered the Jordan River, he sanctified the waters and all of creation. An important sign of God’s sanctification of all things through the feast of Theophany is the act of blessing the homes of faithful Christians. The priest visits the members of the church to pray with them in the place where they live, and to bless their surroundings with Holy Water. He asks God to have mercy on the house, to rid it of every evil and to fill it with every blessing. Getting Ready for Home Blessing To prepare for the priest’s visit to bless your home:
● Make a list of names of family members you wish to pray for when the priest arrives ● On your dining room table or family altar, place a lighted candle, an incense burner (if available), a
family icon, a wide bowl (to hold the holy water the priest will bring), and some vasiliko (fresh leaf basil). ● Be sure your prayer list is there, too! ● Turn off all TVs, stereos, and computers, secure any pets that might “get underfoot”
When the priest arrives, everyone in the house should gather around the table/family altar and join in the singing of the litany responses and troparion. The family will then lead the priest throughout the house for the blessing.

Spirituality’s Great Gifts
Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ is the Greatest Gift of all!
He has exhorts us through His words to put into practice these great gifts...
May we break down boundaries, tear down walls, and build on the foundation of the goodness inside
each of us.
May we look past differences, gain understanding, and embrace acceptance.
May we reach out to each other, rather than resist.
May we be better stewards of the earth, protecting, nurturing and replenishing the beauties of nature.
May we practice gratitude for all we have, rather than complain about our needs.
May we seek cures for the sick, help for the hungry, and love for the lonely.
May we share our talents, give our time, donate generously, and teach our children.
May we hold hope for the future very tenderly in our hearts and do all all we can to build for bright
tomorrows.
And may we love with our whole hearts, for that’s the only way to love.

H γέννηση του Iησού (Mτ 1:18-25)

Bible Passages of Christmas
"For a Child is born to us, a Son is given us; upon His shoulder dominion rests. They shall name
Him messenger of great counsel, wonderful counselor, mighty one, sovereign Master, Prince of
Peace, Father of the age to come. His dominion is vast and of His peace there shall be no end." -
Isaiah 9:6-7
“Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a son, and you shall call His name Emmanuel,
which means “God is with us.” - Matthew 1:23
“I bring you good news of great joy that will be for all the people. Today in the town of David a
Savior has been born for you. He is Christ the Lord. This will be a sign for you; you will a baby
wrapped in clothes and lying in a manger. Suddenly a great crowd of the heavenly host appeared
with the angel and said, “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace and good will to all.” -
Luke 2:13-14
Why Did God Become Man?
by Fr. Anthony Coniaris
Why did God choose to come to us in person? What were the reasons that compelled Him to visit
us? They must have been awfully important reasons to make God empty Himself and take the form
of a servant. Couldn’t He have sent someone else? Couldn’t He have ordered an angel or an
archangel to come? Why did the Lord of the Universe Himself have to come?
We see an indication of why God would ultimately come to earth in the Old Testament, when we
hear God say, “I have seen the affliction of my people and heard their cry… for I know their
sorrows and sufferings and trials. And I have come down to deliver them” (Ex 3:7-8).
God came because He cared. He came in order to deliver us from the slavery of sin and death. He
came because He loved us! We can summarize this best by quoting the Evangelist John “For God
so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him will not
perish but have eternal life. For God did not send His Son to condemn the world, but in order that
the world might be saved through Him.”
We do not believe in an absent God, an invisible, intangible, eternally elusive God. We believe in
a God who, when humanity fell into the ocean of sin and was drowning, did not just stay in heaven
and shout directions on lifesaving, but who jumped into the ocean to save us.We believe in a God
who intervenes in our lives.
We believe in a God who came to seek and save the lost; who came not to be served but to serve;
who came to give us the abundant life; who came as light that whoever believes in Him may not
remain in darkness, who came not to judge the world but to save it!
Jesus Christ came at Christmas. He comes again this Christmas. He comes each day, waiting to
enter into our lives!
28
CAN THIS BE CHRISTMAS? What's all this hectic rush and worry?
Where go these crowds who run and curry? Why all the lights -- the Christmas trees?
The jolly "fat man," tell me please!
Why, don't you know? This is the day For parties and for fun and play;
Why this is Christmas!
So this is Christmas, do you say? But where is Christ this Christmas day? Has He been lost among the throng?
His voice drowned out by empty song?
No. He's not here -- you'll find Him where Some humble soul now kneels in prayer,
Who knows the Christ of Christmas.
But see the many aimless thousands Who gather on this Christmas Day,
Whose hearts have never yet been opened, Or said to Him, "Come in to stay."
In countless homes the candles burning, In countless hearts expectant yearning For gifts and presents, food and fun,
And laughter till the day is done.
But not a tear of grief or sorrow For Him so poor He had to borrow
A crib, a colt, a cave, a bed Where He could lay His weary head.
I'm tired of all this empty celebration,
Of feasting, drinking, recreation; I'll go instead to Calvary.
And there I'll kneel with those who know The meaning of that manger low,
And find the Christ -- this Christmas.
I leap by faith across the years To that great day when He appears The second time, to rule and reign, To end all sorrow, death, and pain. In endless bliss we then shall dwell
With Him who saved our souls from hell, And worship Christ -- this Christmas!
