July 2014 Hello bartender, I am writing you from the past to discuss my 2014 Tales of the Cocktail seminar: "The Blend is the Brand." The simple concept is that is your search for knowledge, rules and perhaps "purity" in the spirit world, you may have fallen prey to the misconception that "blended" is a bad word. In reality, everything is blended. The inspiration for this seminar came principally from explained blended malt scotch whisky to anyone who would listen. If you are uninitiated, blended malt scotch whisky takes 100% malt whisky from different distilleries and blends them. This is different from single malt scotch whisky in no way other than the "single" means that it's just from 1 distillery. Single malts blend dozens if note thousand ands of barrels together to create a complete brand. Blended malts do the same, but just by adding multiple distilleries. What's wrong with that? In this seminar we featured 3 key variables in blending product. The first was the creation of multiple distillates from a wide variety of stills as featured at Demerara Distillers. Followed by High West Whiskey's approach to blending different mash bills or spirit bases. And wrapped up by discussing Compass Box Scotch's unique take on how wood management affects spirits for blending. We interviewed Sharon Sue-Hang, David Perkins & Robin Robinson; all experts in blending. We didn't even begin to touch on blending different ages of products, oaks other than American or how to maintain a blend or a brand, consistently for generations. There is plenty of study to continue. But remember, unless you see a single batch distillation date or the words "single barrel" you are having a blended product. Distillates are creatures by craftspeople but brands are a partnership between craftspeople and the artists that assemble them. Also, you are a bartender, you just blend stuff together all day and listen to people's problems; you are a blender too.
