Is This School Haunted? By Emmaline
Whistling in the bath-
room. Footsteps when no
one is there. Shadowy
figures when you’re all
alone. Tapping on the
walls. People tell vivid
stories of ghosts and
hauntings in this school,
but are they true?
This school started as a
small college operated by
Methodists. The state
took it over in 1885 and
renamed it Weston Nor-
mal School. It closed due
to a lack of funding in
1909. In 1925, it reo-
pened and began to offer
teaching certificates to its
graduates. In 1956, it was
renamed Eastern Oregon
State College. Then in
1997 it was renamed
Eastern Oregon Universi-
ty. Of course, by now, the
institution was no longer
in our school building.
There are no records of
haunting or death in the
school or involved with
the school.
When asked, the staff and
students have different
things to say about the
school being haunted.
Mr. Harwood, a janitor,
said he didn’t believe the
school was haunted. Mrs.
Mills says she believes in
hauntings, but not in this
school. Mrs. Vescio said
that she has never had an
experience to make her
think that the school is
haunted. “The school isn’t
haunted! That’s stupid!”
says one of our 5th grad-
ers.
Emma B. and Tiah B. in
8th grade had a very
creepy experience when
they were alone in the
locker room during boys’
basketball practice. They
heard knocking on the
chalkboard, so they asked
the ghost to give them a
sign of being there. A few
seconds later, the show-
ers dripped. Others have
heard footsteps behind
them in the locker room,
and the sound of some-
one spinning their combi-
nation lock when they
were the only one down
there.
One person, who wishes
to stay anonymous, told
us about a time when she
was in the locker room
wearing heels, and as she
turned to leave, she
heard the sound of some-
one tugging on a locker.

and she heard footsteps that
sounded like bare feet. It
couldn’t be her echo because
she was wearing heels. Others
have looked through the door
to the locker room foyer and
seen a closet light on. If you
watch for a little bit longer, a
shadow of something walking
through the foyer into the
girl’s locker room appears.
Gabby B. in 7th grade said
that when she was in the up-
stairs girl’s bathroom alone,
she heard whistling. This isn’t
the wind or the heater. It’s
soothing, calming whistling.
Other 7th and 8th grade girls
have heard this too. The girls
said that they didn’t feel in
danger, just like another being
was present. Mrs. Bennett has
also heard knocking on the
walls in this bathroom. Aman-
da G. in 8th grade and
McKayla M. in 7th grade also
heard footsteps in this bath-
room.
Ms. Doremus says that no one
has died in the school, and
why would someone choose
to haunt a school? She has a
point, but what if a student
could have wanted revenge
on a teacher or another stu-
dent. Kiara V. in 6th grade
doesn’t think the school is
haunted either. Mrs. Widener
says that she has been to the
school at night, and it is very
creepy. Nothing happened,
but it was definitely weird.
Tobie V. in 8th grade says that
the lights flicker in the up-
stairs hallway, and there is no
one messing with the switch.
Maddi M. in 7th grade says
that when she is alone in the
auditorium, there are loud
noises behind the curtain, and
there was no one there. Oth-
ers see translucent figures
darting between the chairs
and across the stage.
Mrs. Turner said that when
she comes in on weekends to
work, she will see something
in the hall, something that
looks like the translucent fig-
ure that others have de-
scribed seeing in the auditori-
um. She will feel like some-
thing is watching her, and she
will see something out of the
corner of her eye leaving the
computer lab, or going into it.
She always sits facing the
door, and the thing never
comes into her room. Could it
be a ghost, trapped, always
trying to take the same es-
cape route, but can never
make it out?
Max W. in 7th grade says that
he thinks the school is haunt-
ed because it was a prison at
one time. Gavin S. in 7th
grade and Tenley A. in 5th
grade both shake their heads
at the idea of the school being
haunted. 70 percent of stu-
dents say that the school is
haunted. The other 30 per-
cent say that the school isn’t
haunted. Mrs. Surber says she
has been to the school late at
night and had no evidence
from that experience to make
her think it was haunted. Lilly
D. in 5th grade says, “Yeah,
the school is haunted! It’s big
and old.” Keree G. in 6th
grade says that she heard
scratching on the walls and
footsteps in the main hallway
when there was no one there.
She also says that there is
something in the closet by
Ms. Doremus’s room. And it’s
not a person.
So, are these stories just ru-
mors? Or are they true? Ei-
ther way, don’t turn your back
for too long…

Cricket Cricket is a bat-and-ball game, and is similar in some ways to baseball. Each team has 11 players, and one of those players must be the team captain. To score, the team at bat scores runs by hitting the ball and running to the opposite end of the field and back. Creases in the field called popping creases are used to pitch the ball. The ball is rolled toward the creases, and when it reaches the crease, the ball pops off the ground and into the air.
Cricket season starts in Janu-ary and lasts all year, or be-gins in February and ends in July, depending on the region you live in. Right now, South Africa is the highest-ranking team in the world.
Track The Track season has start-ed! The season started on March 11. The teams' first meet is currently scheduled for Friday, April 5 at noon, and will be an all league opening meet at Stanfield. Wish them luck!
Basketball In the world of profession-al basketball today, the Miami Heat are on a 20-game win-ning streak, which is highly impressive. Only four previ-ous NBA teams have achieved this monumental feat. The NBA record is 33 game wins in a row, set by the Los Ange-les Lakers. Currently, the Den-ver Nuggets have the second-highest winning streak, at 10 consecutive wins. Wish the Heat luck, because they've got a good shot at beating the record!

This years 7th graders are in for a surprise next year. When they are 8th graders they will receive their ba-bies. They will also re-ceive a pregnancy vest that weighs 20 pounds that they will wear for undeter-mined amount of time. There is also one other very major twist coming for next years 8th graders. One student will be randomly selected to have to take care of twin babies. They will have to care for the twins only for a short amount of time and not the whole week. Mrs.Glover says that the students were not going to get upgraded babies because they were already life like enough. were al-
ready . Most of this years 8th graders can attest to how real the babies seem and they have to be taken care of just as much as a real baby. Although, there is one way that the students can get out of having to take of the baby. There are two different options that the students have. They can take care of the mechani-cal babies for a week or they can fill out a packet that Miss Glover says takes just as much work as tak-ing care of the babies. Within their packet they have to write one page on one of the many diseases that babies get. They also have to interview someone who has a child or is about to
give birth to a child. Those are just a cou-ple of the things that the students who opt for the packet have to complete. Jackie W. says that she is not happy at all to get the babies next year. Mitchell Y. says that he is a little bit excit-ed to get the babies next year. Katelynn R. say that she is also a little bit excited to be receiving the babies next year. Hannah M. says that she is not at all excited to be re-ceiving the babies next year. So, as you can see everyone has a different feeling about getting the ba-bies next year. All I can say is good luck to all of the 7th grad-ers.
Dear ????,
I don't do any sports
this time of year, and so
I've become really lazy
and I've started to gain
weight. I don't enjoy any
of the sports that go on
this time of the year, and
I don't know what to do.
Help!
Sincerely, Couch Potato
Dear Couch Potato,
Even though you
may not enjoy track, or
baseball, or any other
spring sports, you can still
be active! Try just getting
outside more, maybe go-
ing to the park and
shooting baskets with
some of your friends, or
even just going on a jog!
Being outside and being
active is better than do-
ing nothing at home!
Along with getting out-
side more, you could
start eating healthier.
Eating healthy will give
you more energy and
that can be the kick you
need to get outside!
Good luck!
Sincerely, ????
Dear ????,
The spring social is
coming up, and I always
go to the dance. The bad
part is I can't dance. I'm
really bad at it, and it's
embarrassing. I don't
want people to look at
me weird or make fun of
me. I always end up just
sitting on the sides and
watching everyone else
having fun. It also doesn't
help that Helix is coming
to the dance for this so-
cial, either. It's the last
social, and I want to
make it really fun, but I
hate having people look
at me funny. I need help!
Sincerely, Shy on the
Dance floor
Dear Shy
On the Dance Floor,
Don't be nervous
about dancing in front of
people. Personally, I don't
stand around and watch
to see if anyone is danc-
ing badly. I don't ever no-
tice if someone is a bad
dancer. I think most of
the people at the dance
are there to just dance
and have fun, and not
there to make fun of peo-
ple. If you think someone
is looking at you in a
weird way, just move
away from them. You
could also get a big group
of your friends and just
dance with them. Danc-
ing with friends is a lot
easier and a lot more
fun! If this advice doesn't
work, you could always
sign up for something
else. Good luck!
Sincerely, ????

Random Did You Know…. By Ellie Page 8
The brownie, one of America’s fa-
vorite baked treats, was born in
the U.S.A. The recipe first ap-
peared in print in the early 20th
century. Evidence points to Fanny
Farmer, in 1905, adapted her
chocolate cookie recipe to a bar
cookie baked in a rectangular
pan. (The brownie is classified as
a bar cookie rather than a cake.
That’s because brownies are fin-
ger food, like cookies, and cake is
eaten with a fork). There are
thousands of recipes both “cake”
and “fudge” types. It’s easy to see
that the brownie got its name
from its dark brown color. Here’s
more about the style of brown-
ies. There are numerous legends
surrounding the story of the
brownie. The legend is told in
many varieties, a chef mistakenly
added melted chocolate to a
batch of biscuits...a cook was
making a cake but didn’t have
enough flour. Who knows how it
really happened?
The favorite myth tells of a house-
wife in Bangor, Maine, who was
making a chocolate cake but for-
got to add baking powder. When
her cake didn’t rise right, instead
of tossing it out, she cut and
served the flat pieces. That theory
relies on a cookbook published in
Bangor in 1912, six years after the
first chocolate brownie recipe was
published by one of America’s
most famous cookbook authors,
Fannie Merritt Farmer.

Critic’s Corner By Amanda
Fact or Fraud By Ellie Page 12
Can someone really
be struck by lightning
in their own home
while taking a show-
er?
No, Mythbusters
busted this as false in
their 30th episode,
although this can be
possible if you have
really bad breakers.
Otherwise, being
struck by lightning is
highly unlikely while
taking a shower.
Rise of the Guardians was
released in theaters No-
vember 21, 2012. The
movie starts with Jack
Frost describing how The
Man in the Moon lifted
him from a frozen pond
and gave him amazing
powers. The down side is
that no one can see him
because no one believes
in him. 300 years later,
Santa Clause is alerted
that Pitch (also known as
The Bogey Man) has re-
turned and is threatening
children with fear. After
Santa has summoned fel-
low Guardians Tooth
Fairy, the Easter Bunny,
and the Sandman he real-
izes that The Man in the
Moon has chosen a new
guardian. This new
Guardian is none other
than Jack Frost. Confused
and frustrated from years
of solitude, Jack declines
the offer. Santa contin-
ues to try and persuade
him to join their group.
The Guardians are all of
the childhood legends to-
gether who have sworn
to protect the children of
the world. The animation
in this movie was amaz-
ing and the cast voices fit
the characters perfectly. I
would recommend this
for anyone who loves a
good movie with a happy
ending. I give this movie
5/5 stars.
