President's Report It only seems like a few short weeks ago that the Soccer

Club Committee was working out the details of the 2002 season. I now find myself putting some words together to describe our results and also to ask myself if it has been a successful year for the club. There are obviously a number of determining factors on how we can measure our success: by the number of premierships we win; by the increase in the number of players we attract to the club; by providing the boys the best we can in terms of equipment, coaching and development; by the increased opportunities we make available to the boys. No doubt it is a combination of all of these. But the vital ingredient is the players, and their commitment and effort.

In 2002 the Marist Soccer Club fielded 22 teams ranging in age from U 10 to U 17 years. Player registrations were up substantially from 2001, 319 players in all, compared to 277 last year.

At the end of the 2001 season, we introduced a Development Squad and Soccer Academy into our training regime. The philosophy behind these squads was to allow boys the opportunity to develop over the summer months, when they may have previously chosen another activity. The benefit that these squads gave to the participants, stretched across all divisions in the 2002 season, not only to the Division I teams. The efforts of Steve Bryant our First XI coach, Jack Kynaston, our highly respected coach, mentor and assistant, and Committee members Sam Caggiano and Rob Hush, ensured that boys in all age groups were able to practise and develop their skills all year round. It is through the continuous efforts of these people that the club continues to develop along with the players. The results on the field are testament to the benefits that these sessions give to the boys.

A successful sponsorship campaign also assisted the club this year. Without t he generosity of business houses and individuals, junior sporting clubs find it increasingly

difficult to provide a quality product to players. l would like to thank the Canberra Southern Cross Club, Canberra Switchboards, Margaret O'Donovan - Your City Pbysio, and Eagle Boys Pizza - Phillip for their generosity and support throughout 2002.

On behalf of the Soccer Club I would like to express my gratitude to Mr Ross Tarlinton and the college administration for their support throughout 2002. I thank also the ground staff for their hard work in preparing the pitches, which undoubtedly rate highly among those on which juniors can play and train throughout the season. Thanks also go to all parents and students who took on coaching roles, and to the club committee for their unremitting efforts. A special thank you to the Senior Soccer Master, Mr Pat Bellgard. Pat filled the position vacated by Phil Hall at late notice. As a result of Pat's interest and his willingness to participate actively in the development of the club, we have now initiated contacts with other school and community clubs, so that a number of activities will occur between our clubs prior to the 2003

season. Significantly, the Soccer Club will undertake its inaugural trip to Canada and the United Kingdom at the end of the 2003 season . This trip will allow our boys to play matches against a number of teams in both countries. It is through the hard work of Pat Bellgard that this trip has come to fruition. Our heartfelt thanks go to him for his effort.

It is highly likely that the restructure of the Soccer Canberra Junior and Senior Leagues will allow those boys in Year 12, who turn 18 years old and who have not been able to participate in a Marist team in that age group, to do so. Further opportunities such as overseas travel and financial security will allow our club to grow, so that we are truly competitive, not only in the Division l teams, but across all ages and divisions. The players within this club deserve such a commitment.

Congratulations on a successful season. Mr Michael Kilfoyle

President

As a result of Phil Hall's resignation from the College in April this year, the position of Soccer Master became vacant. Phil is deserving of much gratitude for his tremendous effort in lifting the profile of soccer within the College. When asked to fill this role, I was hesitant to become involved once more in an administrative position within a sporting club, because of its attendant pressures.

In lookjng back on my first season in the job, I can honestly say that the experience was very rewarding. The pressure was not as intense as I had anticipated. The committee comprised a group of motivated and energetic people, who worked effectively as a team, consequently sharing the load. This committee has a vision for soccer at

Marist. I encourage others to join this friendly and dedicated group of people. So much more can be achieved with your help.

I would like to thank the committee for their dedication and hard work, especially Mick Kilfoyle for the strong leadership that he has given to the club. Thanks also to the parents, students and friends of Marist College, who coached and managed the 22 teams. Your efforts were greatly appreciated.

I look forward to the 2003 season.
