The Blue Racer Snake
A large non-venomous snake living in Ontario.
Appearance
• The Racer is a pale blue or bluish green with a white or bluish underbelly
Size• The Blue Racer is the 2nd largest snake in
Ontario, with individuals growing up to 2 metres in length.
Diet
• The Blue Racer’s diet consists on insects, small rodents and birds, as well as other snakes.
Predators
• Large birds of prey, such as the northern harrier, red-tailed hawk and great horned owl have been known to prey on this snake.
Habitat• The Racer is a grassland species, and likes to
inhabit fields and open woodland.
Threats• Habitat loss due to the conversion of land
to agricultural use has been the largest threat to the Blue Racer
Current Status• These days much of Blue Racer’s prime habitat
locations are protected provincial nature reserves. The Blue Racer has also been placed under the Ontario Endangered Species act of 2007, and several others.
