An Embarrassment of Anaysis

On a wntry day n 1932, after I had spent most of the afternoonplayng at the Marshall Chess Club, Edward asked me to jon hmfor dnner I accepted at once Durng the Great Depresson anyonewth a hghI.Q stomach nstantly devoured free eats and after ashort walk we were seated at hs favorte waterng hole n the WestVllage Lee Chumleys, just a block off Seventh Avenue at BarrowStreet In the words of one advertsement of the tme, Chumleyswas Where Chessplayers Fnd a Frendly Clublke Atmosphere"Indeed the food and the conversaton were delcous and we laterrattled off a few skttles games. Edward Lasker loved chess and ts masters as only a man of chesscan. e was sympathetc to the strues and prvatons of professonals and decded to help. n 946 Edward became a knd of

chess labor organzer and set up what was so far as know the frstorganzaton n ths country for chess professonals the Assocatonof Aercan Chess Masters. The am was to safeguard the rghts ofmasters and to set mnmum performance fees.

The authors of this book are Grandmaster Arnold Denker S.chess chamion from 1944 to 1946 and founder of the ArnoldDenker Tournament of High School Chamons and Larry Parr

editor of Chess Le from 984 to 988 and Glasnost News &Review from 1988 to 1991. Mr. Parr who has received numerousawards for his chess wrting from the Chess Journalists of Americacurrently works as a Russan analyst. This book which is about themany memorable chess men whom Grandmaster Denker hasknown is a fully equal collaboration between the two authors. It isalso one of the finest chess memors of its kind.

After defecting from the Sovet nion in 1979 and arriving sometime later in the nited States I came to know GM Denker. And Iwant to assure readers of this book that the real-life Denker is thesame man who so lovingly records in these ages the fobles of hisDamon Runyonlike chess friends and himself.
