Letter From The Mayor
Dear NeighborsAs we begin our City’s 100th year
and I look back upon our history I marvel at how so much of what our
Community was born as still resonates in what we have become. We have always been a Community filled with hard-working families, civic minded residents of strong character and conviction. We have had leadership made up of many problem-solvers whose service has been rooted in what is best for Lyndhurst and very few problem-makers of less noble purpose. In my heart I believe we have always been and remain a tremendous Community of Neighbors.
I wish that I could say the complexities of our world stop at our City’s borders but they do not. More than ever before it is necessary for us to be vigilant; mindful to lock our cars and our doors and to watch over our neighbors. Our police officers and detectives work tirelessly to keep us safe, addressing the complex problems that visit our community. We are a safe community; as such, we often let our guard down and do not take certain precautions. Many of
the crimes that have visited Lyndhurst are “crimes of convenience” – criminals taking advantage of unlocked car doors or unlocked garages and homes to quickly grab any item of value. Let’s all “lock-it-up” and not allow ourselves to be victims!
I invite you to read the historic tales of our City that this year’s magazines feature and I hope that you will take time to celebrate with us at our Summer Concerts in the Park (with FREE ice cream) and at other events that will be scheduled. Our Home Day will be the centerpiece of our celebrations and I look forward to seeing all our great neighbors and friends enjoying one of the longest running festivals of its type in the State of Ohio! Details on Home Day will be found in the next issue of Lyndhurst Life Magazine.
Sincerely,
Patrick A. [email protected]
Mayor Patrick A. Ward

Our City Council has spent the last months working hard on our annual budget, assuring the services we all appreciate are delivered economically. We will continue our healthy investment in infrastructure as well as continued investment in our trees, our programs and all of the other components that make Lyndhurst special. We often hear about our taxes and think the illustration below will best show you where our property tax dollars go. We do an awful lot with 11.2 cents on the dollar!

The Dos and Don’ts of Avoiding ScamsCon artists are not always easy to spot and they are
everywhere! They can be friendly or persuasive, even helpful. They can also be aggressive and
insistent. When dealing with a telemarketer you believe is
fraudulent, your best protection is to just hang up the phone. If you think that is rude, tell these callers politely that you are not interested, you don’t want to waste their time, and don’t want them to call back. Then hang up.
Never give out your personal information over the phone or Internet unless you have initiated the contact. Legitimate business callers will never ask you for this information over the phone.
You can further protect yourself with the following dos and don’ts.
DO donate only to recognized charities.
DO reject high pressure sales methods. Ask the caller to mail or email more information.
DO be very suspicious of a phone call or email purporting to be from a relative who needs money for an emergency. Often the relationship is a “grandchild” seeking help from a grandparent. Check with someone else who knows him or her before sending money.
DO be very suspicious of any transaction in which you are asked to pay with wire or money transfers, prepaid money cards, or gift cards. Scammers choose these payment methods because it is virtually impossible for consumers to trace or reverse the charges.
DO be aware of the computer repair scam. It may come in a phone call from someone saying your computer is at risk, and you must follow their instructions to correct the problem. The con artist might claim affiliation with Microsoft, Windows, or a legitimate-sounding anti-virus software company. If the warning message is received online, it may state the computer has a virus or other serious problem. The message often looks official and includes a telephone number to call for tech support. The victim is then persuaded to let the scammer “fix” the problem for a price, often hundreds of dollars.
DO be aware of the IRS scam in which someone purports to work with the Internal Revenue Service and that you owe money. The scammer will be aggressive and convincing and threaten a lawsuit, imprisonment or other enforcement action.
DO NOT let anyone rush you into signing anything—an insurance policy, a sales agreement, a contract. Read it carefully and have someone you trust check it over.
DO NOT agree to receive packages to hold or ship to someone you met on the internet.
DO NOT cash checks or money orders received through an online transaction without first confirming their legitimacy. Your bank will be glad to help you with this!
DO NOT do business with anyone who offers to send a delivery service to collect your donation or payment for something you have not yet ordered or received.
DO NOT make a donation or buy a service in exchange for the promise of a guaranteed sweepstakes winning.
Oftentimes scammers will target our senior citizens. Let’s educate ourselves and communicate with loved ones, friends and neighbors to remind them to be on guard against scams!

As the weather breaks and the spring season is upon us, the South Euclid Lyndhurst Schools continues to encourage members of the community to remain connected with our district about the many positive student and staff achievements and endeavors. There are a great deal of exciting initiatives underway about which the community will learn in our various communication outreaches, such as the community newsletter, city articles like this and the local news. Don’t forget to use our district website as a comprehensive source of information, by visiting www.sel.k12.oh.us. As the year marches forward, students are progressing academically, and our staff members have been honored for their dedication and hard work as well.
Early Childhood Learning and Development
There are only 2,000 days between the time a baby is born and when he or she will begin kindergarten. During that time, brain architecture is forming, creating a foundation for all future learning. Our district is committed to young children, and we look to build a stronger foundation for all of our students. We believe that when all young children are given the best opportunity to realize their potential and contribute as productive citizens, communities will prosper.
The SEL Schools is proud to announce that its preschool program was recently
awarded a 5-Star Rating, the highest available, by Ohio’s Step Up To Quality program. This initiative is a five-star rating system administered by the Ohio Department of Education and the Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services. The system recognizes local efforts which promote learning programs that meet certain state standards and exceed licensing and safety regulations.
SEL’s noteworthy distinction demonstrates the high quality of education provided by the district’s preschool
program and places it within a select group of statewide early learning programs. For the last year or so, the SEL Schools’ preschool program has been evaluated across four categories, including learning and development, administrative and leadership practices, family and community partnerships, and staff qualifications and professional development.
The preschool program serves children ages 3 to 5 and provides high-quality educational programming four days per week. Each school day includes two separate sessions running 2.5 hours in length. For students with more intense special needs, one 5-hour session is provided five days per week. Students are instructed by highly-qualified teachers possessing either a bachelor’s or master’s degree, while all support staff receive continuous professional development. Classroom instruction utilizes play-based and exploratory activities to promote learning in four domains, including physical well-being and motor development, math, language and literacy, and social foundations. The community will learn more about this program over the next few months, so please stay tuned for more information.
As mentioned, and in addition to our achievements at the preschool level, students and staff are taking significant strides in academic and co-curricular endeavors at all ages in the district. You can stay connected in between these articles through my “Key Communicator” email on our website, which can be found at www.sel.k12.oh.us.
Until then, the district wishes everyone a safe and joyful 2017. Thank you for your continued support of the SEL Schools.

Display your American Flag Properly and with Pride! It is the universal custom
to display the American Flag only from sunrise to sunset on buildings and on stationery flagstaffs in the open. The Flag may be displayed twenty-four hours a day if properly illuminated during the hours of darkness. When displayed without a flagstaff the stars should be on the upper left.
The American Flag should not be displayed if it is worn or frayed. Any Flag, when it is in such condition that it is no longer a fitting emblem for display, should be destroyed in a dignified way. Please bring any damaged or unusable flags to our City Service Department and they will be delivered to our local V.F.W., Boy Scouts or other agency for proper disposal.

Celebrate Cleveland Metroparks Centennial
It’s finally here! 2017: the year of Cleveland Metroparks 100th Anniversary! The Cleveland Metropolitan Park District has been part of our lives for 100 years, providing
a refuge of natural beauty surrounding the industrial City of Cleveland. While we are in the midst of the centennial celebration, we are also looking ahead to our second century of stewardship.
We will be presenting various programs and events throughout the year. Some of these include: Centennial Conversations (History Series); Reader’s Theater; Trail Challenge; 100 miles of cycling; 100 Things to Do in Cleveland Metroparks; Centennial Concert Series; Centennial Web Page; School curriculum (Fall 2017); and some special events planned for the days surrounding the actual anniversary day of July 23. Keep an eye on our Emerald Necklace newsletter and clevelandmetroparks.com for a list of these upcoming programs.
Some locations around the Park District are getting a facelift this year. Among these, the Stinchcomb-Groth Memorial, honoring our first two Directors and overlooking our first parcel of land in Rocky River Reservation. Also included, the A.B. Williams Memorial Woods in North Chagrin Reservation, honoring our first naturalist and the former site of one of the first trailside museums in the country; and Brecksville Nature Center which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
An exciting project on the store shelves now is our Centennial book, The 100 Year Trail: A Centennial Celebration of Cleveland Metroparks. This book, packed with historical information, photos and a timeline provides an overview of the first 100 years of Cleveland Metroparks. This commemorative book was researched, written and designed by Cleveland Metroparks employees. It was also printed locally here in Cleveland. Copies of the book and Centennial merchandise are now available at our Nature Shops and at clevelandmetroparks.com.
We hope you will help celebrate our centennial by making memories at one our 18 reservations, eight golf courses and Cleveland Metroparks Zoo!

Purchase with a re-Purpose!Lyndhurst residents and those who visit here have some
awesome opportunities to turn their shopping trips into opportunity and even their dollars into donation at some of the finest resale shops around.
For those who would like to see real purpose in the dollars they spend please stop in at the American Cancer Society’s Discovery Shop (5404 Mayfield) or the Hospice of the Western Reserve Resale Shop
boutique treasure chest of wonderful upscale finds in an ever changing inventory of household items, antiques, small furniture, designer accessories and clothing. Every dollar spent directly benefits the tremendous work of these organizations and the prices aren’t bad either!
There are also several opportunities to either re-purpose items you no longer have a use for (and get some cash too) or browse through collections of gently used high-
end goods that can be had for a fraction of their cost. Refurnishings (5125 Mayfield) specializes in furniture items and is like an estate sale every single day. They are even available to purchase single items or entire households. For our local fashionistas – babies, tweens, teens and adults – visit The Greens of Lyndhurst and you will find Plato’s Closet, Revolve Fashion and Revolve Kids and Tweens where high end and designer clothing and accessories can be found at great prices and where your own items, that you no longer plan to use, can be exchanged for cash!
It says a lot about our 21st century community that we see great value in repurposing instead of just tossing those high-end items we have used, cared for, but no longer need! So, whether your interest is simply good stuff for a good price or great purchases to support great causes those opportunities are found right here in Lyndhurst!

Block PartiesLooking forward to our fast-approaching summer I want
to encourage all of our residents to consider Block Parties for your neighborhood. These events are great
for building neighborhood spirit and fostering connections between us and those who live around us. It is so much easier to look out for those with whom we have some connection! Please let me know if there is any way we can help in the planning of your neighborhood event!
One of many local neighborhoods that celebrated last summer with a Block Party and a fantastic Parade were the residents on Ashwood and surrounding streets last August. The kids were the stars; they decorated their bikes, shook noise makers and pom-poms. A fire truck headed up the parade, Mayor Patrick Ward led the kids and a police cruiser was behind with dance music playing on the cruiser’s loud speaker. After the parade, kids enjoyed
exploring the fire truck and police cruiser and of course a pot-luck brunch!
To organize a block party for your neighborhood, please contact City Hall at 440.442.5777 or find the application on line at www.lyndhurst-oh.com.
The City of Lyndhurst is proud to present and support the Facebook Page Lyndhurst Neighborhood Safety https://www.facebook.com/groups/LyndhurstNeighborhoodSafety/
While the page shows as closed, this page is for Lyndhurst Residents only. This page is to promote safety within our community. We encourage all residents to join the group.
You will see posts to raise awareness about crime and crime prevention in our community. If you see something, say something. Please keep in mind; we do have a lot
of longtime residents that may not have access to a computer or internet. With that being said, please keep a watchful eye on them and not just during inclement weather. Talk to them, about of what you see on the Lyndhurst Neighborhood Safety page. They are home during the day and see a lot more than most of us.
TOGETHER, WE CAN KEEP LYNDHURST SAFE!
