The Boston
Tea Party
“Boston Harbor is a teapot tonight!”
A Tax on Tea Due to the tension following the Boston
Massacre, Parliament repealed the Townsend Acts but kept a tax on tea. Why? To show that it still claimed the right to tax
the colonists.
The Tea Act Much of the tea in the colonies was
smuggled in East India Company asked Parliament for
permission to directly sell to the colonies Low prices would convince colonists to buy their
tea, increasing the tax revenue and helping E.I.C. pay off debt
Tea Act Continued… Passed in 1773 Opposed by many smugglers and
merchants Afraid E.I.C. would put them out of business
Others feared E.I.C. gained a monopoly on the tea trade.
End result: Colonists opposed the Act
