Australia’s oldest man and Roma resident Dexter Kruger celebrated his 109th birthday on January 13, 2019. Mr Dexter Kruger continues on as the oldest Australian born man and had a busy birthday. First up he was interviewed on ABC Radio’s Australia All Over. Then he attended a service at Roma Uniting Church. Later in the day a special morning tea was held in Dexter’s Honour. At 2:30pm Dexter was given an afternoon tea at Pinaroo by the Staff. Several of Dexter’s family members and friends came along. He was also interviewed by two television stations and the local newspaper. To top it all off, Dexter launched his 12th book chronicling stories of his very long and interesting life. Mayor Tyson Golder and his wife Natalie, Matthew and Janet Rowlings and members of Dexter’s immediate family including his son Gary who played piano on the day helped him to celebrate. “I am taking it one day at a time” said Dexter about the journey towards his 110th Birthday.

Roma Librarian, Glenda McKnight welcomes new members to join the Library. Glenda says membership covers so much more than just finding a book to read in a cool environment. The excitement of the mind can also be stimulated by ebooks and audio books. New members for 2019 can call to 38-44 Hawthorne Street Roma for more information.

Alan Faulkner, a Volunteer at the Big Rig Complex on Rigger's Road Roma has invited new people to Roma to visit. He is urging

locals and visitors to get acquainted with the things on offer to see and do in Roma and around the Maranoa from a special brochure on hand. Alan also invites people to consider being a volunteer to meet new people from other areas and learn about our own region. Those interested can contact Leanne Crawford at the Big Rig.

Muckadilla’s Rememberance Day commemorations took a dramatic turn last November when former Muckadilla soldier Lloyd Zerk collapsed. He was attended by medical personnel at the service who provided first aid. The Life Flight helicopter then flew in to retrieve Mr Zerk. David Bowden presented a Certifcate of Appreciation to Tim from Life Flight’s thanking him for Lifeflight’s efforts .

Christmas is a busy time for all but especially our local clergymen. Father Jamie was up early on Christmas Day to hold mass for smaller towns like Yuleba and Jackson where a light meal was enjoyed and presents exchanged. At All Saints Roma children of the congregation playing out the Nativity was a highlight of Christmas Mass. New altar attendants and servers were also recently installed with Earl Nino taking over as leader for 2019 from Matthew Maloney.

Ida Montague Exhibition & Workshop Roma on Bungil Gallery welcomes Ida Montague for the opening of her exhibition ‘The Nature of Things’ on February 8, 2019 at 5:30pm. The opening is a free event and everyone is welcome to attend and meet this interesting talented artist who now lives on the Sunshine Coast. RSVP by emailing [email protected]. Ida Montague's life - first in Denmark, then as an opal and gem merchant in Sydney, and later a cattle grazier’s wife and business partner in Far North Queensland - enables her to draw on a number of cultural perspectives and brings a refreshing Scandinavian point of view to her paintings. The clear lines in Ida’s work hint at her Danish heritage while the subject matter remains iconically Australian. Her art brings red dust landscapes to life and through them you can hear the whack of the polo stick, thunder of hooves or cattle call. Ida Montague will also be holding a two day colourist workshop in Roma on April 13-14, 2019. Contact the ROBG Secretary to register your interest. Easter Art Show 2019 will see the richest Art Show ever held in Roma and the Maranoa with a whopping $10,000 in prize money being offered across a range of sections. The Maranoa Artists Inc will be once again organising the Art Show with the most welcome assistance of the Roma on Bungil Gallery Committee who are providing the venue for this prestigious event. Sections include Watercolour, Acrylics, Oils, Pencil/pastel/charcoal, Mixed Media, Local (any medium – restricted to the area of Maranoa Regional Council) and Youth (under 10yrs and 11 to 17yrs). There will once again be a People’s Choice Award – as decided by the visiting public and for the first time there will be Encouragement Awards for each section. It is hoped that artists from across the

region and indeed the whole of Australia will be attracted by the generous prize money on offer. The event will run Event runs 18 to 23 April with close of entries being Friday 29 March 2019. For entry forms please contact Tabitha Thomas on 0457 588297 or [email protected].

The club held their Christmas Party on December 8, 2018. A good time was had by all as they shared their skills and enjoyed a lovely lunch. The club looks forward to welcoming new members in 2019 Club rooms are open on the 2nd and 4th Saturday of each month from 9 am to 4 pm or by prior arrangements by calling 0429891593.

The Mitchell New Years Eve Pro Rodeo was back bigger and better after a great first run in 2017. The 2018 edition saw a full eight event Pro-Rodeo program run for the first time and the crowd was delighted by the high quality rodeo action. Competitors were pleased about the extended program too giving opportunities for them in roping on top of the rough stock and barrels events. The crowd partied on and welcomed 2019 to the sounds of DJ Richter. The big screen was again a great addition to the night. Booringa Action Group and Mitchell RSL & Combined Sports Club would like to express their appreciation to everyone who sponsored, volunteered and attended the event.

Mitchell Freemasons and Mitchell Men’s Shed ran a combined raffle during November of a camphor blanket box kindly made by Mitchell Freemason, Steve Goeldner, from donated timber. The winner was Zoe Edgley of Mitchell. Hand Heart Pocket the charity arm of Freemasonry Queensland partnered with the Australian Men’s Shed Assoc. to make men more aware of their mental and physical health. The raffle was drawn at a sausage sizzle at the Mitchell Men’s Shed on Saturday. We would like to thank the Mitchell community for their generous support.

The gallery is heading into a jam packed schedule for 2019. This year has kicked off with a exhibition by Joan Hurtado. ‘Life Drawing’ is about the art of playing with multiple mediums and enjoying learning to draw the human form. These sketches were drawn while Joan belonged to a group of artists who gathered every Friday morning to

do life drawing. “I believe we don’t need to be taught to draw,” said Joan. “ What we have to be taught is how to let go; to let go of our social upbringing sometimes and the constraints that tell us we can’t do something” she said. The exhibition will be on display until Saturday February 16, 2019. Up next at Mitchell Gallery will be an exhibition by local aspiring photographer Jane Cornish. Jane is well travelled and the exhibition promises to combine shots from overseas and at home under the title ‘Life, Love and Near-Death Experiences’. It will be on display from February 23 until April 6, 2019.

In the first week of December, 48 head of children were mustered to the Great Artesian Spa and hall complex in Mitchell for the annual swim, arts and gymnastics camp (SWAG). Real swags were also required as this was where they were fed (many thanks again Eunice Campbell- still earning her 20 years appreciation certificate and bunch of flowers), watered and taped in for the night. Under direction of the amazing boss drover/camp coordinator Kylie Hindle, kids were tailed out each day in small mobs by amazing govies and mums for tuition with; Luey Maslen in gymnastics, Robyn Cahill from Columboola environmental Ed centre doing archery, canoeing, indigenous games and engineering, Ros Ware and Janelle Rook doing cement sculpting, Alissa Turner doing swimming, Carla and Melody Carrol doing drumming. On top of all that other activities held were games night, fluoro disco, Christmas craft, drawing (thanks Kaitlyn Newton), amazing art tutorials from Karly Cicero, netball, cricket (thanks Birko) swimming carnival and finally a concert on the Friday morning. It was again a very successful camp with everyone pitching in to make it work. We would like to thank our camp sponsors Rotary Mitchell, Maranoa Regional Council, Booringa Action Group, Chiconi Grazing, Elders, Mounts Machinery, Tilly’s Crawler Parts, Mungallala Sawmill - Queensland Cypress Supplies, Black Toyota, Henry Livestock Transport, Charleville Refrigeration and Electrical and Warrego Office Choice. During the camp, Will Bryant, George Handley & Skye Maudsley were interviewed by Life Member Christine McLean and each received the Guy Bryant Memorial Incentive Award –– This is awarded to all year 6 children of the Branch to act as an incentive in their

secondary pursuits. Will Bryant also was the recipient of the Pam Weaver Bursary. This bursary is in honour of Pam’s community spirit and involvement and the award was established and is funded by the Weaver family.

Mitchell Show will be held on May 13 and 14 2019. At a rough guess, that makes it about fourteen weeks till show day so now is the time to start preparing your crafts, pull out those needles, take photo’s, paint pictures, pamper your plants or whatever it is you just love to do. All of your favourite pavilion categories will be available again, I believe there are over 32 classes and kids don’t forget to get your entries ready too. For more information on classes or a copy of the program contact [email protected].

Amby Branch QCWA held the final meeting for the year at “Crochdantigh” Muckadilla at the invitation of Mrs Jennifer Crocker, after the weekly Yoga Session at the Muckadilla Hall. Our crochet bags were discussed and ideas for craft in 2019 were put forward with mosaics and wrapping being the most popular. Different recycling crafts such as re-

purposing baling twine will also be on the agenda. Volunteer work was discussed with Jennifer Crocker mentioning that support is needed for her piano playing and singing at Pinaroo, Roma on Fridays. The Branch will cater lunch at The Quilts in the Woolshed at Springhill Country Craft's Open Day on April 6 at “Spring Hill” Amby. The first meeting for 2019 will be on February 21, 9:30 am at the Amby Hall. Everyone is welcome to join with us for the beginning of a great year. February 2019

A bushfire that spread from Lonesome National Park to ‘Korcha’ in the Arcadia Valley over the Christmas period saw the call go out for reinforcements to help. For days the fire continued to jump containment lines and many hours, machinery and vehicles were given towards the control efforts by over 50 volunteers. Behind the scenes meals were donated and children minded. A special mention of thanks goes to the Arcadia Valley and Wallumbilla Rural Fire brigades and also to Justin MacDonnell who stayed at the fire front for the duration from Boxing Day into the New Year. Appreciation also goes to a certain Injune local whose shop was not open but answered the call to repair grader and tractor tyres. Although the Price family had over 15,000 acres burnt, without the efforts of so many the area would have been much higher. What a wonderful community effort!

November 16 marked the 75th anniversary of the C-47 Dakota crash on Rewan Station. The USAAC C-47-20 DL Dakota of the 21st Troop Carrier Squadron of the 374th Troop Carrier Group left Batchelor airfield in the Northern Territory headed for Archerfield in Brisbane. The plane was carrying an American crew of four, an American sergeant, and 14 Australian soldiers when it broke up in mid-air in a violent storm over Rewan, killing all on board. The wreckage was found by Mr J N Wells of Rewan Station on the afternoon of November 18. Debris, including mail and kit bags, aircraft

parts, clothing and equipment, was scattered over two kilometres along Carnarvon Creek, where a memorial plaque now commemorates this tragic accident. The Americans were buried in the US Military Cemetery in Ipswich on November 24, 1943 and were eventually returned to the USA after the war. The Australians were buried in Rockhampton on November 25.

The Maranoa Regional Council School Holiday Program was a great success in Injune over the summer holidays. A cricket clinic was held at the Steve Murray Oval, Injune Men’s Shed assisted with construction of a Christmas timber tree at

the Injune Library and rocket science was performed at the school oval. Thanks to everyone who contributed to, and attended, these activities.

At the time of publication a date had not been set for the popular Bymount Red Day, which is usually held in February. For an update on Red Day please ring Donna Sutton on 0427 261 420. The Tooloombilla rodeo, campdraft and gymkhana will be held from March 22 – 24.

Even the flyer for the next exhibition at the Injune Creek Gallery looks like fun and everyone is invited into the amazing world of Penny Eamer in February. Penny, from Miles, is a multi-faceted artist dealing with an eclectic range of mediums including fabric work, felt, books, boxes, puppets, sculpture, fabric sculpture, medical and botanical illustration, paper craft, polymer clay, jewellery, gourd

craft, colour theory and practice, graphic art, wearable’s, writing and photojournalism. She has had numerous solo and joint exhibitions and has won several awards. She is a regular contributor to the Australian ‘Embellish’ magazine, has work in many other publications and in private and public collections both in Australia and overseas. The exhibition will be run until March 4.

Injune’s Centenary is next year! With 2020 just around the corner CHIPS (Cultural Heritage Injune Preservation Society) needs your help. The committee is planning on publishing a book to mark the centenary and is after your stories and photos. The stories and photos can be landscape and urban views such as this one looking at Injune from the water tower, or of groups of friends such as these photos showing the old bar and tucker shed at the racecourse prior to the construction of Possum Park, or they can detail everyday life such as Les Bradsch and his bogged truck. Many old photos did not contain dates or comprehensive captions, making this project a puzzle piece as well. Check out the CHIPS Facebook page for more great photos and if you have information you would like to share

The Yuleba Bush Fire Brigade Truck has been in the Miles Historical Museum for many years. Recently the museum offered to return it to the Yuleba community. The Yuleba Development Group accepted it on behalf of the community and proposed it be restored and displayed in Cobb & Co Park with the Yuleba Creek Fire Tower. Community consultation during the Cobb & Co master plan process endorsed the idea. Roma Transport Services agreed to transport the Bush Fire Brigade Truck to Yuleba and this occurred recently. Locals were very excited when it arrived in Yuleba where it is to be repaired. Our thanks to Dave, Charlie, Ian and Les at Roma Transport Services for their support, time, effort and the efficient way the return was carried out with their tilt tray truck. Local community members are keen to restore the truck to its former glory and the Yuleba Development Group is looking for funds to assist in buying the parts, tyres and paint etc required to get it running. We are also looking for photos and stories about the truck and details of past Brigade members who may have served on it.

Yuleba Community Christmas Party was held in the grounds of the Yuleba State School by the Yuleba State School P & C Association. The evening highlight was the arrival of Santa who had goodies to hand out to all the young people. Maranoa Regional Council supported the event with Queensland State Government drought funding. Horse Poo Lotto was organized by the Bendemere Pony Club with ‘Majesty’ being the pony at the centre of attention. Tim Towne was the lucky lotto winner. CPB from Reedy Creek provided lighting so games could be organised for all the children in the cool after dark. The P&C Association were very happy with the way the evening went.

The final meeting for 2018 was held at Lyle and Chris Walters property at Wallumbilla. Lyle and Chris have only been in residence for 8 years but have achieved an amazing development of the garden. Ongoing issues with the drought encouraged them to put down a bore recently and that has enabled them to have the garden in great shape. An orchard has been established with citrus, grapes, dragon fruit, stone fruit, olives, guava and mulberries are complemented with 5 bee hives. A family of tawny frogmouths inhabits the garden and were a delight to the visitors. Secretary Viv organised a Christmas competition which everyone thought was a lot of fun and plants were exchanged as gifts allocated under a ticketing system. Raffle winners were Cheryl Tarry, Meryl McNulty, Helen Cosgrove, Robyn Seawright and Lyle Walters. The Annual General

Meeting will be held on Sunday 3 February at Robyn Wilby’s home at 3.00pm. Everyone welcome. Don’t forget your hat, chair, cup and a swap plant.

Noonga’s rising Tennis Star Fifteen year old Payton Leahy from Noonga was invited by Tennis Queensland, South Region, to participate in their biggest teams carnival at Griffith University over five days in December. It’s one of the most gruelling but rewarding tournaments on the Junior Tennis calendar. Players and teams from across Australia participated, travelling from the Northern Territory, NSW, South Australia and all over Queensland. The 15 years team consisted of three girls and three boys, three players were from Toowoomba and one each from Dalby and Chinchilla. Payton’s mixed partner was Mason Pareu of Chinchilla, who she formed a great partnership with on court and they walked away with many wins. Payton also did very well in her girls individual singles event winning her first game and qualifying for the second round, but was knocked out by the No. 1 seed from South Australia. Well done! Christmas Tree Noonga Christmas Tree was held on 18 December. It was a very well attended night, Santa managed to find his way to Noonga yet again to the delight of the children gathered around the Christmas Tree. Thank you to Maranoa Regional Council for providing funding for the night. Catering was handled by the BBQ crew and a huge selection of side dishes and delicious desserts brought in by the Noonga families. It was also a night of sad celebration for Noonga as we farewelled Brian, Fiona, Alice and James Sinnamon who after many, many years of Noonga Community involvement have sold their property. We thank them for their community service and wish them

well in their future travels wherever that may lead. Thanks also to Kerry Hewitt for the photos, the ones of Santa and his well-travelled feet were a highlight. Date Claimer - Noonga Dance Noonga Dance– Saturday 2 February 2019 Celebrating 90 years since the hall was erected, the decorations and theme of Noonga’s Old Time Dance will reflect the diversity and development of the Noonga district as well as the history. See you there with your dancing shoes on!

The members and families of the Roughlie Community enjoyed Christmas celebrations with Santa arriving by helicopter! After the Lolly Dropfrom the air Santa distributed gifts to over 40 children. It was awonderful evening for children, their parents and families of the district. Our thanks to the Maranoa Regional Council for again providingCommunity Drought Support funding. This funding helped provide a wonderful meal for everyone plus soft drinks and ice creams for the children. February 2019

Council is appealing to residents for the return of the fish from Surat’s newly installed Surat Fisherman Sculpture on the southern side of town.A disappointing act of vandalism, the Council funded sculpture was damaged over the

Christmas/New Year period after only being installed three months earlier. The sculpture’s missing fish can be returned discreetly at any of Council’s Customer Service Centres or depots. This act of vandalism follows on from a number of other incidents across the Maranoa targeted at Council, private property, schools and local businesses. If

you see anything suspicious or fall victim to vandalism do not hesitate to report it to your local police. During school holidays, parents are also encouraged to keep an eye on their children and business and homeowners resided to securely lock their premises to deter vandalism or break ins. The Maranoa is a safe and family friendly place to live, lets work together to keep it that way!

February will see the return of the popular Surat Riverside Markets held at Riverside Markets in Marcus Street, Surat. All of your favourite stalls will be back as well as a hearty BBQ breakfast and bargains a-plenty. The markets run from 7am until 12pm. To book your stall call 0439 718 340.
