THE BOURNE BUZZ
October 2020
Thoughts from the President:
I would first like to give special thanks to Karin Benedict and the board who served during the 2018-2020, your work and dedication to BNN is truly appreciated.
The BNN Board for 2018-2020 along with the new board 2020-2022 met at Pocasset Country Club on Tuesday, September 15, to thank all who have served and welcome those joining the new board. I look forward to the working with you all.
While a joyous occasion, BNN members were truly missed, since we are an organization for socializing and meeting new people.
Excerpt from Dee’s welcome speech. It is so wonderful to see everyone and I mean, being able to see your entirefaces while people were sitting down for dinner… not just the eyes! Masked lifecan be a challenge, so for the few hours we are here this evening…it iswonderful to see your smiling faces!
As BNN is in our 5th year, we have grown strong and have evolved even with apandemic. While life is a little different, BNN may be a little different. EveryBuzz newsletter has the membership list - thank you to Marty for creating such a great Buzz, out on time every month full of info, ideas and activities. I encourage you all to pick up the membership list and reach out to someone you haven’t seen in 7 months. Arrange for a socially distant walk, or a chat on the beach, or open air dining or just a chat on the phone. It is up to each of us as individuals to create a safe small activity where and when possible. We all have BNN friends, while life may have some uncertainties, one thing I can be sure of is my friends who I have made through Bourne Newcomers. I am sure all of you feel the same way. We actually added three new members last month to BNN.
Thank you again to the board members passing the torch and welcome to the new board members, we are going to have a great 2 years! Everyone has an important position that will keep BNN strong and active. Stay healthy

Board Member Profile: Tina Prodouz
That “fishing thing” brought Tina and Bill Prodouz here to Bourne. Whilethey were living in South Boston and nearing retirement, Tina asked Bill howmuch longer he would be coming to the Cape every weekend to fish at theCanal. After he told her he had a good 15 years to go, she said, “Let’s moveto the Cape,” even though she loved city living.
When they moved to Pocasset in 2013 Tina was already familiar with theUpper Cape, often visiting her aunts and uncles in Monument Beach andFalmouth – plus it’s close to that Canal fishing.
The new treasurer on the BNN Board, Tina brings heavy-weight credentials. With a Ph.D. in Biology from the University of Virginia, she has had two fantastic careers, the first in public health. Her early research was in hematology and improving storage conditions of blood cells for transfusion, working at the American Red Cross Research Labs and then at the FDA Hematology Division.
She was at the FDA when the HIV-AIDS epidemic hit and worked for several years on photochemical methods to eliminate viruses from donated and stored blood. During her years at the FDA she published numerous scientific articles.
Her second career involved a “huge leap” to the corporate world when she went to work at The Gillette Company’s basic research center in Maryland. It was this career with Gillette that brought herback home in 1997 when she gladly accepted a transfer to the company’s Boston headquarters.
At Gillette she had wonderful travel opportunities to Europe, Asia and South America. In India, China and Brazil she got to meet with consumers in these emerging markets to better understand their daily lives and personal care needs. She and Bill spent a “fairy tale” year and a half living in England when she was assigned there. The holder of two patents, she retired as Director of R&D in the Blades and Razors Division working on new products such as the popular Fusion and Venus razors.
Tina has always been called Tina, except in school where she had to say, “I’m Kristina-with-a-K.” She attended the public schools of Brockton (where her grandfather was the Superintendent), and met Billin high school there. They dated through college, married and moved to Charlottesville, VA, for graduate school at the University of Virginia. While she studied biology, Bill completed an MBA.
They’ve been married 47 years and have a daughter, Erica, and son, Daniel, who both live in Texas withtheir families – Dallas and Austin. “I still find it difficult to believe they left the beautiful East Coast for Texas!”
She and Bill usually visit the families and their four teenage grandchildren a few times a year and every summer their home becomes “Gramma Camp” for her daughter, her husband and their three girls while they escape the Texas heat for three to four weeks. Tina offers a real camp-style retreat with plenty of camp crafts like painting, sewing, beading and fairy gardens.

Captivated by all things scientific, she collects a “Cabinet of Curiosities” filled with fossils, shells, bones, rocks, bugs and feathers from their many trips. Being real travel lovers, she and Bill are planning on visiting all of the National Parks and they hope to get to Alaska soon. They’d also like to see Finland and Sweden.
Outside of science and travel, Tina’s “claims to fame are sports-related.” The very first time she went to Fenway Park she got to see Derek Lowe’s no-hitter! When they lived in England she went to The Open and watched an entire professional golf match on a cold and damp course along the northwest coast.
Not just a spectator, Tina was a FIFA-certified soccer coach, coaching children when they lived in Bethesda, MD. She remembers, “A great deal of my time was spent telling the fullbacks to turn around and watch the play on the field!”
A member of the Bourne Women’s Club, she became active with the Friends of the Bourne Library when she first moved to town and was recently elected to the position of Library Trustee. Before becoming the new BNN Treasurer, Tina was Programs Chairperson for the past two years, planning the Socials and Lunch & Learn programs. An avid reader, she belongs to the “wonderful” book club, Bourne to Read. Pre-Covid she enjoyed playing Bunko with BNN friends and volunteering at the Happy Hope Factory.
She doesn’t have any new ideas for BNN right now, but she says, “I just look forward to when we can get back to our friends and the fun activities we had put together in the four years of our young club.”
