The Boy Who Hated Being Black Story by Reba McIntyre-Kindred Illustration by Timothy Stafford This is a tall fable about two young boys who grew up in the South. They were identical twins, but even though they were identical, everyone could tell them apart. “But how is that possible?” You ask. Well, I’m so happy that you asked that question, because the reason is very simple. One boy had an olive tone skin color, as beautiful as the rising sun. The other boy also had a beautiful skin tone, a smooth dark color, almost as black as mid-night, and his name was Sunny. One day Sunny and his brother Bubba ran across this magic fish that was dying. They threw the fish back into the water and saved his life. The fish was so grateful that he gave each of them a wish, and Sunny’s wish was to have the magic fish change his color to another color. The fish granted Sunny his wish. Have you heard the saying, “Gong from bad to worse?” That is exactly what happened to Sunny. Sunny lived for many years being sad and lonely because of his new color, until one day, he realized that he was totally the blame for his sad and lonely life. His decision to accept what had happened to him brought about another change, but to his surprise, it was a change that made him very, very happy.

After the death of her mother, Reba moved to Columbus, Texas with her grandmother, Mrs. Sadie Dorn. But again, destiny took control of her young life, and she would once more know the bitter sting of death. Her grandmother expired on her third birthday. Reba was the youngest of three children; Melvin Valentine, the oldest, and a sister, Shirley King. The three of them once again found themselves feeling the great loss of someone dearly loved.

Mr. & Mrs. Sanford Junious Sr., (aunt and uncle), originally from Columbus, Texas, had already ventured to Wharton County in search of farm land. They immediately took Reba, her brother and sister into their home, which later was located in Kendleton, Texas (Fort Bend County). This is where they grew up, attended elementary school and completed high school. Shortly after graduating from Powell Point High School, Reba became engaged and married Algie Kindred, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Alvin Kindred Sr. of Kendleton, Texas. To this marriage was added three beautiful daughters; Ramona, Shontelle and Nicole. When asked, to what she owed her many talents, she never hesitated, but immediately said in a very positive, stable voice, “God, of course.” She also stated that living on a farm where the soul and the mind has an opportunity to become one with much of God’s creations, played a great part in her writing. She states that she no longer feels that her life was somehow doomed even before it began. But now she understands that all things are done for a purpose. She can better interpret why her life, even from the very beginning, was so severely altered, creating an invisible path of pains, sorrows and many unanswered questions, much too soon. Today, Reba is not just a writer, but a pioneer of her own creations. Her writing displays a rare technique that earns her the privilege of being totally unique among others. She doesn’t just write words, but as she so proudly says, ”I write feelings.”
