Local News & Notices

Burrough Green CE Primary SchoolSTILL ‘The fastest school in Cambridgeshire!’

Another fantastic BGS success at the Primary Schools’ X-Country Championships was recorded yesterday. We were overall winners of the boys’ competition for the second time, winners of the boys’ small school race for the fourth year running, had the fastest boys B Team, and for the first time ever our girls were the fastest small school team in the competition – finishing 6th overall. There were so many medals and trophies being handed out (and BACK) that we probably need a bigger cabinet to show them all off.

Final positions:

1st place: Boys A Team – Liam Nicholson, Jon Elliott, Angus Dow, Hugh Dow.

6th place: Girls A Team – Georgia England, Olivia Clarke, Erin Cameron, Madeline Wybrew.

11th place: Boys B Team – Brandon Evans, Harry Brewin, Findlay Hay, Jorge Aguilar-Agon.

Sport Relief

Everyone joined in the 3-legged team race on 23rd March with great gusto. It was actually won by Blue Team (Cage), but was so close there was only a 3 lap difference between the competitors. Team Captains Madeline Wybrew and Georgia England collected the first silverware for their house in almost 5 years, so well done to all of them. Along with the silly socks day we had a super time and raised £124 for good causes.

Netball Hooray for the Girls’ B Team who recently took part in the South Cambs B Team Finals at Comberton Village College. Our girls have made huge strides in the last couple of terms and have become an excellent match for all our local rivals. We were the highest placed team in the Linton Cluster, finishing a creditable 8 th out of 18 overall. The Girls’ A Team finals take place in May – GO GIRLS!! Let’s hear it for: Millie Harris, Esme Brusell, Olivia Clarke, Morven Osborn, Maddie Howard, and Erin Cameron.

The school welcomes visitors who would like to come and see what we do, or to enquire about places. Simply ring the office on 01223 507236 to make an appointment. Alternatively the website is a great source of information about life in our great school. www.burroughgreen.cambs.sch.uk

Great Bradley Church Fete, 6th July 2014Plans are now well under-way for the highlight of the village year, the Great Bradley Church Fete!

A big thank you to everyone who has offered their services so far. We still need volunteers to help in various ways including: setting up the day before, serving teas and selling on the day and clearing up afterwards. If you are new to the village, getting involved is a great way to get to know people!

There will be stalls selling books, bric-a-brac, plants, gifts and toys. Contributions for stalls as well as draw prizes and bottles will be much appreciated.

Contact Sue (783595) Rose Cottage Evergreen Lane, Keith (783607) Fox Corner or Geoffrey (783132) 20 Fox Green with offers of help and donations, or come along to the next planning meeting, which will be on Saturday 17 May, 10 am at 20 Fox Green.

Calling all gardeners!Last year’s produce show was cancelled because of the cold spring but this year the organizers are hoping for a great show of flowers, fruit and vegetables. An entry form will be included in the June Bugle.

Farm Hamper Draw Great Bradley Farms will kindly be sponsoring the Farm Hamper Draw once again. Tickets will be attached to next month’s Bugle.

Farm/Woodland TourSaturday, 31st May 2014The annual Farm/Woodland Tour will start from the Covered Yard (just above the Church) at 4.00pm on Saturday, 31st May 2014 (a week earlier than usual as everything seems to be so advanced this year!). As usual, the tour will be undertaken on foot and will last for approximately 2–2½ hours, followed by a discussion, with refreshments, either in the garden at The Hall or in the Covered Yard (depending on weather conditions – so far each year we have been lucky!). The proceedings will draw to a close by about 7.30pm.

The idea of the tour continues to be to provide an overall perspective on modern agriculture, including the types and uses of crops grown on the farm, woodland and hedgerow management, conservation and environment issues and, in particular, how we are handling them on the Estate here at Great Bradley. Although the format broadly remains the same, each year we take a new route and look at different features and themes.

We would be grateful if those coming on the tour do not bring dogs or other pets, not least to avoid disturbing nesting birds.

If you are interested in coming on the tour, I would be very grateful if you would kindly reserve a place by emailing me at [email protected] or by texting or calling me on my mobile (07831 318 019).

Granta Chorale – Music for Double Choir – Saturday 10th May 7.30pm at Saffron HallIf you haven’t yet ventured to this new concert hall, Granta Chorale’s performance at Saffron Hall on Saturday 10 May, conducted by Janet Wheeler, is a very good time to experience the splendid design, acoustics and comfy seats of the auditorium and to explore the attractive foyer and bar area. There is also excellent onsite parking.

The wide-ranging programme includes the very beautiful Mass for Double Choir by Swiss composer Frank Martin, which he completed in 1926. The piece has been described as a ‘Renaissance Mass lost in time’ and has sections of fragile, modal beauty. The Credo is lively and meaningful, with an ‘Et resurrexit’ whose skipping rhythms defy the dead not to rise up and dance!

Brahms’ Fest- und Gedenksprüche, settings of three short biblical texts which echo the music of Schütz, have very differing moods, from energetic and fanfare-like to lyrical and melodic.

The programme also includes pianist Richard Carr, playing Brahms’ Rhapsody in G minor and movements from Ravel’s Le Tombeau de Couperin, and choral music ranging from 17th century Monteverdi to 21st

century Lauridsen, Janet Wheeler’s new setting of a poem by Kevin Crossley Holland and some enjoyable and light-hearted arrangements of British folksongs by Peter White.

Suffolk Walking Festival - 10th May - 1st June 2014Now in its seventh year, the Suffolk Walking Festival is bigger and better than ever before, with nearly 80 guided walks planned, covering the whole of the county. We have a lovely mix of short strolls around medieval villages and market towns and longer rambles through the gentle landscapes of Suffolk, through Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and along the glorious Suffolk coast.

The Discover Suffolk Challenge Walk this year follows The Angles Way, which meanders for 90 miles along the Suffolk/Norfolk border, through the picturesque Waveney Valley and the sandy landscape of The Brecks.

Do one day, two days or all six, the choice is yours, but as always, there will be treats and prizes for those completing the whole route.

Our themed, guided walks throughout the three week festival have some wonderful titles such as: 'Across the Marshes to the Castle', 'A Point to my Ramblings', 'Tiptoe Through the Heather' and ‘Prickles’ Story Walk‘. You can Walk the Burma Road, learn about the Maritime Heritage of the Ipswich Waterfront, walk through Rolling Fields and a Cutting Garden and even try a free taster session of Nordic Walking.

Some include refreshments – a cream tea perhaps, or a glass of local wine and all of them are a fun and sociable way to learn about the lovely county of Suffolk. We will also be celebrating the 20th anniversary of the Stour Valley Path with a series of walks covering the length of the path over six days, with the Dedham Vale and Stour Valley Project.

We invite you to make the most of what Suffolk has to offer in abundance: pretty countryside, lovely villages, warm hospitality and a fascinating history.

Articles & Information

Great Bradley Annual Village Meeting – SummaryWed. 9th April 2014[ This is a summary of the minutes from the meeting, a full version is available via email from John Barnett, or via the Great Bradley website. Many speakers had people to thank either as helpers for general support or for more direct or financial support, I have left these bits out of this summary only to save space, but do pass on these thanks to all involved in supporting the many village groups and activities that take place. -Ed]

22 people attended the meeting and were warmly welcomed by Parish Council Chairman Simon Kiddy.

Suffolk Police ReportIn the last year there was just one crime of note in the area; the theft of red diesel from a JCB on farm land off Hall Road. In comparison to the 2012-13 when there were 4, two burglaries and two thefts.

Bradley was one of the priority villages for speeding for the SNT between months of Dec. – Mar. as part of the B1061 corridor of traffic. The figures for Bradley were: 8 speed checks; 4 fixed penalty tickets issued and 5 verbal warnings given. The next SNT priority setting meeting is Tues. 10th June, 7pm at Bury Police Station.

The PCC, Tim Passmore will be hosting a public meeting for the St. Eds. district on Wed. 7th May at 6:30pm at The Samuel Ward Academy, Haverhill.

Other general information worth notingThere has been a growing trend of purse/wallet thefts from handbags in the town centres, victims are often elderly with the majority of offences taking place on market days. Shoppers are also being targeted, the victims being observed whilst using their bank cards then, later using distraction techniques [told you've dropped some money; asking directions / the time that sort of thing] their purse/wallet/bag is stolen and the bank cards taken. Suspects range in descriptions and possibly work in groups/teams of both males and females.

There have been increasing reports in Suffolk of an ongoing nationwide fraud scam where by a victim is phoned by the offender who purports to be a Police Officer investigating fraud relating to the victims bank account. The victim is persuaded to withdraw money or send bank cards via a 'taxi' driver to the offender. The offender will often provide additional numbers for the victim to call. The victim can be fooled as whilst dialling the number the offender will not terminate the call (but stay on the line), and hand the phone to an accomplice to confirm the 'Police Officer's' contact and credentials.

The report from Suffolk CC will be available shortly. [Any important information will be reported in a later Bugle -Ed]

There was no report from St. Edmundsbury BC.

Parish Council Report – Simon Kiddy The village garden has been re-designed and new plants will be purchased and planted later in the year.

The PC will continue to support the Village Hall broadband connection which has been very useful particularly with the computer courses.

The recreation ground play equipment continues to be regularly checked and maintained and the wooden

edging surrounding the Glade was completed with new bark chips laid in the path.

The annual Bonfire Night was once again well supported. The donations from those attending were generous as usual and helped to cover nearly all the costs.

The village archives are finally being attended to and thanks go to the team for that.

The Parish Council Precept has been kept the same despite the fact that St Eds. BC is reducing the Parish grants by 25% per year. The reserves remain around the level that the auditors recommend.

Village Hall – Wendy Mansfield It had been another eventful year - a power surge destroyed much of the hall's electrics, some new lights have now been installed. The heating has been haywire, which has caused some disruption to users. Thanks must go to all the clubs and associations that have battled on during the cold or hot heating spells and apologies to those who couldn't use the hall because of it. Some events were not well supported e.g. there had been a very interesting evening on antiques from an excellent speaker Barrie Stevenson from Cowlinge but only 12 people were there; also the children's party (which had been such a success last year) had to be cancelled as only 3 had booked.

Events currently planned are 'An evening with Joyce Grenfell' and a wine & beer tasting evening.

There was a question from the floor regarding the bell. Wendy said that quotes were being sort for this. Another question was regarding the current positioning of the bottle bank. Wendy said that it will be moved to take it further away from the houses nearby.

The Bradley Bugle – John Barnett The Bugle is still being produced to the usual schedule without too many problems, new advertisers have come forward and the advertising income was now over £500pa.

Village websiteJohn Barnett said that the village was most fortunate to have such a brilliant website all courtesy of Mike Brophy's dedication.

Litter pick – Geoffrey Vollam The litter pick had fewer helpers this year but the main areas in the village had been completed. Thanks must go to the helpers who turned out and Anne Smith who provided the refreshments for afterwards.

Neighbourhood Watch John Barnett said that they were a small group which meets twice a year to discuss any problems and ideas. A new person has just come forward to represent Fox Green.

Community Speedwatch – John Barnett The local Speedwatch area now has 3 villages Great Bradley, Cowlinge and Thurlow. They are a team of 3 in Great Bradley, 2 in Cowlinge and 2 in Thurlow. In addition to the team on the ground taking vehicle speeds there is now a new Vehicle Activated Display which is smaller than the current one we share with Hundon and designed to be locked on top of fixed poles and left in position for 3-4 weeks at a time and then moved to another location. The prices for a machine given so far vary from £1,200 to £3,500 and a full spec and cost will need to be decided before any further discussion with other local councils. However, there was general approval of the idea at the meeting.

Great Bradley Farms – Charles Ryder After the MOD dragging their feet there maybe progress later this year with the project for the under-grounding of cables.

The signage for the permissive footpath up the hill to East Green should be going up later this week.

He fully supported the efforts of the Parish Council with regard to the problem of dog fouling.

All the roadside trees have been checked and some necessary surgery will be taking place.

It is hoped to alleviate the erosion of the verges in Water Lane with the creation of a new field entrance opposite the existing one, permitting the heavy machinery to cross directly from one field to another without having to use the Lane.

He is considering where the allotments might go and hopes to have some ideas in the not too distant future.

Wildbird seed is to be planted at the bottom of the Spinney. Five Black Poplars have just been planted - three to the North and two to the South of Bradley bridge.

The Spring Barn concrete slab area will be used as a grain area for a period this Autumn.

Events planned for later this year are: Farm Walk 31st May, a tour of Broxted (old RAF Stradishall) in the Autumn. A bird survey at Broxted found 47 species and this survey will now be done annually for the next 25 years. Thanks must go to Les & Anne Bunyan for all their work at Broxted and their photo collection from there.

Rowan Sylvester-Bradley asked about supply of woodchip for a possible community burner. Charles said that the supply was there - he had actually suggested this to the Prison.

Reports from other village groups/organisationsParochial Church CouncilPCC members are Revd Derek Hollis, Sue Ireland (Churchwarden) Geoffrey Vollam (Treasurer) and Keith Willington. The pattern of a communion service at 11 am on the second Sunday of every month has continued, with occasional Benefice Services at 10 am. The church building is in reasonable order. We are especially grateful to the cleaners and flower arrangers who keep the church interior looking clean and well-cared for. Last year were able to pay our share of the Quota to the Diocese of St Eds. and lpswich. The fete was last year’s main fundraising event and a record £2,700 was raised with a 5% donation was reserved for charity.

This year’s fete will be on Sunday 6 July and the first planning meeting will be on 23rd April, as always, offers of help will be welcomed we particularly need people to set up tables the day beforehand and clear them away afterwards. Great Bradley Farms will be sponsoring a hamper draw and tickets will be distributed with the June Bugle. There will be a produce show this year of flowers, fruit and vegetables.

Workers Educational Association – Geoffrey Vollam In September we at last succeeded in obtaining ‘History of the English Language Pt.2’ with Dr Rosemary Williams. This was a fascinating exploration of English from Shakespeare to the present, including accents and dialects, grammar, and the future of our language.

In January we were fortunate to hear Wendy Barnes from Little Bradley talk to us about ‘Manor to County to Country: Bradley & district in the Domesday Book environment’, which in spite of having a long title was a thorough and entertaining look at Domesday records in this district, including near parts of Cambridgeshire. There is an event at Little Bradley church on 17th June which will follow up some of the more local aspects

that Wendy brought to our attention.

The WEA meets again in September, on Wednesday mornings from 10.15 to 12noon, with a ¼ hour break for tea/coffee, which is free. You may attend the 1st session as a taster without paying if you do not wish to continue with the rest of the course. Further details will appear in the Bugle shortly. WEA provides an informative and enjoyable social break in the middle of the week and although we had more than 20 people at both courses we should of course be delighted to welcome anybody who wishes to come. Many thanks are again due to Peter Smith our chairman/secretary for coping with the administration flow from WEA Cambridge office, and to Anne Smith for her invaluable help in keeping the show on the road. Extra-parochially we are also very grateful to Gill Brown of Balsham, not least for her help with refreshments, and to Alan Bampton of Burwell, our able treasurer.

Afternoon Club – Gill Dunn There has been a break due to the computer classes clashing on Thursdays. They will move to Wednesday afternoons on the second Wednesday in the month.

Art Group – Pete Smith read the report from Anne Pigden. The Art Group has had a good year and we have welcomed several new members which has brought fresh talent and interests into the Group. Jan Couling remains at the helm we continue to meet on Tuesday afternoons at 2 p.m. for two hours. The Village Fete should again see us mounting an exhibition of some of our work.

Scottish Dancing Class – Helen Smith read the report from Ella Hollins . The Scottish Country Dancing class has continued on a Monday afternoon for 2 hours between 2pm and 4pm. Issues with the Village Hall have meant a few classes have been cancelled and numbers have fluctuated but we have a higher number of less experienced members who are enjoying their dancing and improving greatly. The majority of our members now come from outside the village. We are hoping to have our annual dance in Thurlow Village Hall next month.

Computer courses – John Barnett Another substantial grant of £1,800 has provided funds for 5 more courses, two of which ran last Autumn and two running currently. These last courses are on Windows 8 and Excel and are both sold out. There should be sufficient monies remaining to run one final course in the Autumn. Ideas please for this.

Flexible Friends – Gill Dunn The heating problems in the hall has meant it's been a bit hit and miss. Hopefully with the better weather it will now improve. They have room for just 2 more people.

Pilates (Tuesdays 7.30pm) – Helen Smith read report from Helen Axon The class has been running successfully since May 2012, and runs in 6 week blocks, averaging 9 attendees, fluctuating slightly over holiday periods etc. Issues with the hall have meant cancelling a few classes, and also as the hall hire rate has unfortunately had to increase. This may mean that in the coming months I will need to increase the cost of the class slightly to cover this.

Overall, I am extremely happy with how the class is going. Attendance remains consistently high and feedback from class members is positive. In addition to this all class members have made significant improvements in Pilates so it is a pleasure to teach.

Recreation Area1. John Barnett reported that they were going to try to tackle the problem of dog fouling by using the idea

of vivid spray paint around every pile to highlight the extent of the problem. This will be done in conjunction with posters put up to explain what is being done and why and the health problems, particularly to children, from dog faeces.

2. Living Willow structure. There was no further information on this at present.

Village Archives – John Barnett A small team had been meeting once a week categorising and then cataloguing every single item in the archives. Thanks to Charles Ryder for allowing the team to have a dedicated room in the Bradley Hall offices for all the work and for the archives to be safely stored in future. We have taken a break for the Summer but will return to the task in the Autumn. The long term aim is hopefully to be able to digitise all the records so that everyone will be able to find them online.

WW1 commemoration and archive exhibition – John Barnett A combined exhibition is planned from Friday 8th to Sunday 10th August which is very close to the 100 years declaration of war by Great Britain. Charles Ryder has some wonderful film footage of military exercises in this area and anyone else who has any memorabilia from that time is asked if it may be used as well. The archiving team will also be showing some of the material they have been cataloguing and the Coffee Caravan will be coming on Friday 8th as well.

Village Garden – Rowan Sylvester-Bradley The new seat has been repositioned behind the hedge with a good view over the valley. The garden will be replanted with a selection of shrubs and small plants to a design that his wife Sue has been working on. The village sign will be replaced with a taller post.

Community event – the Big Lunch John Barnett said that with the success of recent community events it was hoped to be able to run another one this year. The national Big Lunch template whereby people come together and everybody brings something to the party (usually food) was thought by the meeting to be a good idea. There had been a suggestion that the Parish Council could perhaps provide the drinks. The village Bar-B-Q would be available if wanted. The national day for the Big Lunch is the first weekend in June but naturally there is no need to go with that date if another is preferred.

Forthcoming events:The following events were notified:

• 31st May - Farm Walk - anyone wishing to join in should please let Charles Ryder know.• Big Lunch - likely in June• 6th July Fete• 8th-10th August WW1 commemoration & archive exhibition at Village Hall • 24th August - Ross Skingley said there would be 2 Lancaster bombers flying at Bourne airfield with

possible invitations to fly in them. • Autumn - date to be advised - visit to Broxted (the old RAF Stradishall airfield)

Any other ideas/problems etcThere was a question about the Village Hall lottery. Simon Kiddy said he had done it for 8 years but has now stood down. It needs someone else to come forward to take it on and perhaps rejuvenate it with new ideas.

• Your car has been stolen • Your property has been damaged • You suspect drug use or dealing in your neighbourhood

Or to:• Report a minor traffic collision • Give the police information about crime in your area • Speak to the police about a general enquiry

some countries outside the EU - such as Switzerland and South Africa - and is available worldwide on GSM mobile networks.
