viola cellobass orstring bass or double bass
The String FamilyStrings are stretched across these instruments. Some are tight, to make high notes, and others loose, to make low notes. When you pluck or draw a bow across the strings, you get a sound. (The part of the bow that touches the strings is made of horse hair!)

The Brass Family
trombone
Brass instruments are long, coiled metal tubes with valves (in trombones, a slide). Trumpet and trombone tubes are cylinders while French horn and tuba tubes are cones. To make a sound on brass instruments, you buzz your lips as you blow into the mouthpiece. That involves pressing your lips together and blowing, forcing air through the lips, causing them to vibrate.
In music, “b-a-s-s” is pronounced with a Long A, like “base.” A bass (Short A) is a fish.
bass
A viola is a little bigger than a violin. The “shoulders” of a cello and bass are shaped differently.
The bassis taller than I am!

The man is there to show you how bigthe instrumentsare.
Woodwind instruments are basically hollow tubes with holes. Clarinet and flute tubes are cylinders while bassoon and oboe tubes are cones. Some tubes are made of wood and others are made of metal. Most woodwinds have a reed in the mouthpiece that vibrates to make a sound when you blow into them. Pitches are changed by covering and uncovering holes with your fingers.
